Resumen
In the past two decades carbon nanotubes and graphene have attracted a lot of research attention due to their exceptional electronic properties. The research focus on improving the synthesising techniques will eventually lead to their applications in terahertz wave, millimetre wave and microwave frequencies. In this thesis, a modelling technique based on the transmission line theory is proposed to calculate the 2-port S-parameters of vertically aligned CNT arrays with finite sizes and arbitrary cross sections. The process takes into account all the coupling in the array and gives the analytica

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are materials with significant potential applications due to their desirable mechanical and electronic properties, which can both vary based on their structure. Electronic applications for CNTs are still few and not widely available, mainly due to the difficulty in the control of fabrication. Carbon nanotubes are grown in batches, but despite many years of research from their first discovery in 1991, there are still many unanswered questions regarding how to control the structure of CNTs. This work attempts to bridge some of the gap between question and answer by fo

Resumen
Metallophthalocyanine-single walled carbon nanotube conjugates were successfully synthesized and applied in the electrochemical characterizations of pesticides (amitrole and diuron) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). The formation of conjugates was confirmed through the use of the following analytical techniques: UV-vis, FTIR, Raman and XRD spectroscopies, atomic force and transmission electron microscopies and voltammetry. Chemically linking SWCNT to MPcs created platforms that offered efficient transfer of electrons and this was confirmed through electrochemical impedance studies (EIS) and voltam

With the advent of microelectronics and micromechanical systems, the benefits of miniaturized technology became evident. With the discovery of carbon nanotubes by Iijima in 1991, a material has been found that offers superior porperties such as high tensile strength, excellent electrical and heat conductivity while being lightweight, flexible and tunable by the specific atomic arrangement in its structure. The first part of this thesis deals with a new synthesis approach, which combines the known routes of chemical vapour deposition and laser ablation. The results concerning diameter and yield

In this thesis, I present studies in the field of terahertz [THz] spectroscopy. It covers both the generation and detection of ultra-fast broadband THz pulses, as well as the transmission properties of vertically grown multi-walled carbon nanotube forests [MWCNTs]. We have found that these vertically grown MWCNTs respond strongly to THz radiation and exhibit an anisotropic optical response. The analysis done was a simplified model that is frequency-indepedent, which led to discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental data. This suggests that the response of the CNTs is frequency-depe

M.Sc.
Donor-acceptor (D-A) systems consist of a donor covalently or non-covalently linked to an acceptor. The simplest D–A system consists of a donor linked to an acceptor and is called a dyad system. Photoactive dyad systems are molecular devices designed to perform through the separation of charge separation states and the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy in analogy to photosynthesis.1 These dyad systems consist of a donor which is usually a chromophore and an acceptor. The design of these systems is guided to mimic photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and charge separation
