Resumen

SATPOL PP Bandung have big challenges in doing their job. The challenges come not only from external factors, such as the resistance of the street vendors but also from internal factors such as conflicts within the member themselves. It requires character support for achieving success in performing their duties. The previous research found that the SATPOL PP Bandung members have five dominant characters, those are Keberagamaan (Spirituality), Kebersyukuran (Gratitude), Motivation (Hope), Teamwork and Justice (Justice). To achieve well-being condition and doing job effectively, a module was constructed that consist of those five characters. The purpose of this study was to compare the comprehension of SATPOL PP Bandung about those characters, between before and after the of Character Strength training. The method used was Comparative and the results of the module test showed significant differences in comprehension for character Keberagamaan, Kebersyukuran, Motivation, and Teamwork. While the character of Justice did not show any significant differences in comprehension between before and after training. This is because SATPOL PP Bandung in doing their job only follow the procedures and directions from their Superiors and was not allowed to take other actions beside the policy.

Resumen

This study examined the effect of interpersonal character strength of service employees on their emotional aspect of happiness. Interpersonal character strength has been shown to be a critical skillset required for service encounter employees, thus is expected to increase the levels of employee happiness, as well as to moderate the relationship between emotional labor strategies (e.g. deep acting and surface acting) that employees useand their positive emotion. The results from a sample of 129 receptionists working at imported electronics show rooms and service centers showed that interpersonal character strength indeed had a significant positive effecton happiness, even after controlling demographic variables and other character strengths. Furthermore, interpersonal character strength moderated the relationship between deep acting and happiness so that emotional laborers with high interpersonal character strength experienced more positive emotion when using deep acting strategy, as compared to those with low interpersonal character strength. These findings offer suggestions for organizations and their employees to develop both deep acting strategy and interpersonal character strength in order to enhance the level of happiness of employees.

This study examined the psychosocial correlates and psychometric properties of the Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (SAWS) (Webster, 2003a). Seventy-three men and 98 women ranging in age from 17–92 years (Mean age = 42.77) completed an expanded, 40-item version of the SAWS, the Loyola Generativity Scale, and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale. A new definition of wisdom is provided which is operationalized with the SAWS. Results indicated that the SAWS has excellent reliability (test-retest = .838; Cronbach's Alpha = .904). Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor analyses confirmed the five hypothesized dimensions of wisdom and the total SAWS score correlated in predicted directions with generativity ( r(169) = .448; p < .01) and attachment avoidance ( r(169) = –.239, p < .01) demonstrating construct validity.

Resumen

In this paper, the effects of character strengths on the physiological reactivity to social anxiety induced by the Trier Social Stress Task were reported. On the basis of their scores in the Chinese Virtues Questionnaire, 30 college students were assigned to either high- (n = 15) or low-character-strength (n = 15) groups. Their psychological stress and physiological data across three laboratory stages (namely, baseline, stress exposure, and post-stress) were collected. Results indicated that individuals with high character strengths exhibited rapid cardiovascular recovery from baseline to post-stress even if high- and low-character-strength groups showed similar patterns of cardiovascular arousal in response to the stress at baseline and stress exposure. These results prove that character strengths are stress-defense factors that allow for psychological and physiological adaptation to stress.

A total of 366 participants from Great Britain and the United States completed a new, short questionnaire to measure respondents’ self-assessed character strengths based on the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA) ( Peterson & Seligman, 2004 ). They also completed a core self-evaluation ( Judge, Erez, Bono, & Thorensen, 2003 ) and a Big Five personality trait ( McManus & Furnham, 2006 ) measure. The study investigated the factor structure of character strengths measure as well as demographic (particularly sex), ideological, personality, and core self-evaluation correlates of the six virtues that represent the “higher-order” classification of the strengths. Exploratory factor analysis provided evidence for the six virtues, though somewhat different from the theoretical formulation. Regressions looking at demographic (sex, age, education), ideological (religion, politics), and personality (Big Five plus core self-evaluations) determinant of these strengths (using factor scores from the factor analysis) showed personality factors (particularly extraversion) were always most powerful predictors of the self-rated strength and virtues. Limitations of the scale are discussed.

Resumen

Hindu teachings contain a lot about character education, morals, ethics and manners. Moral education can be seen in the story of Sundara Kanda, which is a sub of Itihasa in the Ramayana epic that tells the journey of life with various obstacles and tests that must be faced with full fortitude, strength and determination. Every event that occurs in the Sundara Kanda story is a unified narrative unit in resolving the conflict of every event. The setting in this story uses the setting of Mount Mainaka, Alengka Palace, Taman Angsoka, Kiskinda kingdom. The character is Hanuman who becomes a central figure, then there are goddesses Sitā and Ravana. The accompanying figures are Trijata, Wibisana, Anggada, Jembawan, Sugriwa, Laksmana and Rama. Rahwana as the Antagonist, then there are also giants. His mandate is loyalty and determination in carrying out dharma. Character characters contained in the Sundara Kanda story include characterization displayed through the use of the character's name, through the appearance of the character, and characterization through the author's speech. In accordance with the characters contained in Hindu teachings, namely in the book of Bhagawadgita, the characters in the Sundara Kanda story can be grouped into two characters namely daivi sampad and asuri sampad. The values contained in the character of the Sundara Kanda story include religious, honesty, responsibility, tolerance, discipline, and hard work. As a whole, the character's character value is a national character that should be inculcated and developed to the wider community, in order to shape the attitudes and behavior of a person in carrying out the duties and obligations that should be carried out both towards oneself, the family environment, society, nation and state.

Kekuatan karakter atau character strengths adalah salah satu pembahasan utama psikologi positif yang bermanfaat bagi kesejahteraan individu, baik dalam konteks klinis, pendidikan, maupun industri-organisasi. Kekuatan karakter adalah sebuah konsep yang menyorot kualitas-kualitas positif manusia yang universal dalam berbagai budaya. Sayangnya, masih sulit ditemukan alat ukur kekuatan karakter dalam Bahasa Indonesia yang dapat digunakan dalam penelitian di Indonesia. Meski sudah tersedia pemeriksaan kekuatan karakter gratis di internet, namun tidak tersedia skala yang dapat digunakan oleh peneliti. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk membuat alat ukur atau skala kekuatan karakter yang dapat digunakan untuk penelitian di Indonesia. Penelitian ini melibatkan 101 mahasiswa (79,2% adalah perempuan) untuk mengisi skala kekuatan karakter yang peneliti susun berdasarkan konsep Peterson & Seligman. Hasil uji reliabilitas menunjukkan bahwa skala ini tergolong reliabel, dengan rentang reliabilitas antara α = 0,520 – 0,858. Hasil analisis butir menunjukkan terdapat beberapa butir yang kurang tepat dalam mengukur ranah-ranah tertentu dalam skala, sehingga peneliti membuang butir-butir tersebut. Skala yang semula terdiri dari 144 butir, setelah melalui proses pengujian dan pembuangan butir, menyisakan 120 butir yang dapat digunakan. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa skala dapat digunakan dalam penelitian kekuatan karakter di Indonesia.

Interstitial-free (IF) steel has excellent deep-drawability and was used widely in automotive industry. High strength IF-steel is that some phosphorus was put in common IF-steel to improve its strength without destroying the deep-drawability [1]. Microstructure and grain boundary character strongly affect the deep-drawability of high strength IF-steel, it is an obligatory task to test those characters. The technique of Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) can reveal the microtexture and detailed orientation distribution of grains from a single EBSD map, as a powerful instrument, EBSD was used widely in materials research from last decade [2]. Many researches have been focused on the texture evolution and recrystallization phenomena of high strength IF-steels [3,4], but the microtexture and grain boundary characters of warm-rolled high strength IF-steels was not fully investigated. The present study was aimed at researching the microtexture characters of a commercial high strength IF-steels under different warm-rolled temperature using EBSD technique, the microstructure and grain boundary character were analyzed systemically, and the relationship between the microstructure and deep-drawability was discussed.

Resumen

The primary objective of this research was to study the differences in positive traits between military and civilian college students and between cadets in their first and final years at a military academy. Second, the research aimed to study the relations between positive traits and the academic and military performance of cadets in their first and final years, according to the classification of positive traits by Peterson and Seligman (2004). To accomplish these objectives, a sample of university students from a military educational institution and a sample of civilian university students were studied. The instruments used were a 24-item self-report measure of positive traits, a measure of social desirability, and objective scores of academic and military performance. The results generally showed that when age and career stage were held constant, the scores of the military students were higher than the scores of the civilian students across various strengths. Military students reported higher levels of the character strength of spirituality than did civilian students. The relationships between strengths and performance differed for students in their first and final years at the military academy. In particular, cadets with the higher levels of academic or military performance in their last year, i.e., the cadets best adapted to the academy, reported higher levels of the character strength of persistence when compared to low-performing cadets in the same year of study.

Resumen

We propose that strength of character is a potentially important organizational research topic, one that has been largely untapped in applied research. Character (ethos) refers to those inter-penetrable habitual qualities within individuals and applicable to organizations that constrain and lead them to desire and pursue personal and societal good. In our review, we first provide an initial conceptualization of character, partly by distinguishing it from virtue and values. Second, starting with the Old Testament, we examine how character has traditionally been considered across time and culture. Next, we discuss the extant research on strength of character and organizational virtue. We conclude with promising research directions involving individual character strength and organizational virtue.

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of the low character of students in responding to 21st-century globalization. Because of this, it is important to ask whether curriculum policies have prepared students to be adaptive to these dynamics. This article aims to analyze the character content and the gradations of student social development in the domain of attitudes in the applicable educational curriculum in Indonesia. This study used a qualitative content analysis method with a directed type design and a framework of eight character strengths that took the coding, theoretical approach, findings, and analysis stages of the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia document number 20 of 2016 concerning Basic and Secondary Education Graduate Competency Standards (SKL). The research found: first, the character content is in the attitude domain; spiritual and social, aimed at shaping the character strength of students to become religious, honest, caring, lifelong learners, and physically and mentally healthy; second, the gradation of student social development still focuses on real social development, and has not included the gradation of virtual social development of students as an effort to respond to 21st-century globalization. Therefore, this study recommends the Indonesian government revitalize the character content of SKL in educational curriculum policies by considering two forms of gradation of both real and virtual social development of students as the next generation of the nation.

Resumen

The paper describes the size, density and strength of flocs gained from a humic acid suspension coagulated with aluminium sulphate over a range of dose and pH. Flocs were generated on a continuous flow basis in an oscillatory mixer. Particle size measurements were gained using CCTV and image analysis. From this, a maximum floc size (d95) was identified. A second series of experiments examined the floc sizes of the bulk precipitate alone under equivalent conditions. It was found that the overall floc sizes of the two suspensions were broadly similar, suggesting that the floc strength was dominated by a common bonding mechanism irrespective of the presence of the humic colloids. Some features of the size distribution in response to dose and pH were attributed to the influence of surface charge. Upper floc sizes were proportional to the Kolmogorov length (η) with d95/η ∼1. For typical levels of mixing, the floc strength was estimated to be on the order of 0.1 N m−2. By analysing the breakage kinetics in energy terms and relating the strength to the density of individual floc, a physically-based structural model was developed to explain the response of the floc size to the prevailing state of mixing.

Positive psychology has revived psychology’s abandoned interest in the study of morally positively valued traits (the so-called character strengths) and virtues. We review literature generated on strength-based approaches and focus on applications in the so-called positive psychology interventions. There seems to be great potential in this approach for research in the field of giftedness and, of course, also when practically working with gifted children and adolescents. We highlight some ideas for future research directions.

In positive psychology, humor has been identified as one of 24 character strengths considered ubiquitously important for human flourishing. Unlike the other strengths, humor was a late addition to this classification system and its status as a strength continues to be somewhat controversial. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to explore the associations between humor and several outcome variables of relevance to positive psychology (happiness, routes to happiness, resilience, and morality). The second purpose was to explore how best to conceptualize and measure humor as a character strength by comparing the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) Humor Scale with the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) in their ability to predict the outcome variables. A sample of 176 participants completed questionnaires assessing the humor and positive psychology constructs. The results indicated that the humor measures significantly predicted most of the outcome variables, supporting the importance of humor in positive psychology. Furthermore, although the VIA-IS Humor scale and positive humor styles on the HSQ showed considerable overlap, the negative humor styles added significantly to the prediction of outcome variables beyond these positive humor measures, supporting the importance of assessing maladaptive as well as adaptive uses of humor in research on positive psychology. These findings suggest that the HSQ may be a more useful measure than the VIA-IS Humor scale in future research in this field.

Pasien yang berada di rehabilitasi narkoba sering merasa tertekan secara mental. Pemikiran yang seperti itu merujuk pada keadaan di mana para pecandu narkoba melakukan self-blame, karena itu penting bagi para pasien untuk mengatasi tekanan tersebut atau yang di namakan coping stress. Untuk merealisasi hal tersebut, diperlukan sikap positif yang terefleksikan dalam pikiran, perasaan dan tingkah laku pasein. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara character strength dengan coping stress. Subjek penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh pasien di Loka Rehabilitasi BNN Deli Serdang, sebanyak 151 orang. Data diperoleh dari skala untuk mengukur character strength dan coping stress. Analisis data yang digunakan adalah menggunakan korelasi product moment melalui bantuan SPSS 17 for windows. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan koefisien korelasi sebesar r = 0,781 dan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0.000 (p < 0.05). Ini menunjukkan ada hubungan positif antara character strength dengan coping stress. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sumbangan yang diberikan variabel character strength terhadap coping stress sebesar 61,1 persen, selebihnya 38,9 persen dipengaruhi oleh faktor lain yang tidak diteliti. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa hipotesis penelitian diterima, yaitu ada hubungan positif antara character strength dengan coping stress.

I study spreading of two interacting hardcore bosons in disordered two-dimensional finite lattices from an initial occupation of two adjacent sites. The parameters related to the spreading of the particles provide an insight on the effect of interaction. I find that the presence of interaction makes the particles less localized than the non-interacting ones within the range of disorder strength W ≤ 4 and interaction strength V ≤ 4 . If the interaction strength is higher, then particles localize more. A transition with changes in the character of dominant correlations is found at critical disorder strengths for each chosen strength of interaction. The nature of correlations between the particles as nearest neighbours becomes dominant beyond these disorder strengths.

Abstract An experiment was conducted to investigate the offspring-parent regression for three quantitative traits (weight, abdominal bristles and wing length) in Drosophila melanogaster. Linear and polynomial models were fitted for the regressions of a character in offspring on both parents. It is demonstrated that responses by the characters to selection predicted by the nonlinear regressions may differ substantially from those predicted by the linear regressions. This is true even, and especially, if selection is weak. The realized heritability for a character under selection is shown to be determined not only by the offspring-parent regression but also by the distribution of the character and by the form and strength of selection.

Resumen

Local rice is a potential germplasm as a source of genes that control important properties in rice plants. The research aimed to characterize the morphological character of local rice cultivars of North Sulawesi. The research was conducted from January to June 2015 in North Sulawesi. The method used was the descriptive qualitative method. Exploration was done by collecting samples of local rice cultivars in North Sulawesi. Each cultivar was characterized its morphological characters according to the Characterization and Evaluation Guidelines of Rice Germplasm. The local rice found in North Sulawesi were 10 varieties, namely Pulo Sawah, Superwin, CK, Serwo, Pilihan, Sako, Sito Merah, Sito Putih, TB, and Serayu. There were similarities of the characters from all local rice varieties of North Sulawesi, such as culm (culm strength and culm habit), leaf character (basal leaf sheath color, leaf blade color, collar color, and auricle color), and flower character (panicle exsertion and panicle attitude of branches). The character of grain morphology was very diverse for all local rice varieties of North Sulawesi.

The script of Senja dan Penantian written by Hernandes Saranela, tells about the waiting of a Chinese descent girl waiting for her lover to return from the battlefield. This realism script of the play presents its challenges and requires a lot of references. The Chinese Widow film is a source of ideas. Ying's character as the main character is lovely because the play's depth brings out firm acting details. The actress made a series of observations and used the presentation approach to creating the Xiao Mei's character. The creation of this work aims to describe how the actress can portray the character's inner act by using Stanislavski's acting method. Prior literature on the use of character strengths suggests that both deficiencies and excesses in the use of strengths can be problematic. While most school-based training in character strengths tends to focus on the former issue, an example is provided of a school-based program offered by the Mayerson Academy in partnership with the VIA Institute on Character that does not focus on deficiency but rather celebrates enhancing one’s own personal key strengths. This program, entitled Thriving Learning Communities, will be implemented in 42 Cincinnati public schools this year. It aims to motivate students, as well as educators, to perform at their highest levels through encouraging increased use of character strengths. We provide an overview of the program and discuss how it may be modified by the teacher to offer a more nuanced perspective on character strengths within a gifted student population. Specifically, within a gifted classroom setting, we discuss ways in which educators can encourage gifted students to understand the importance of balancing their strengths and effectively matching their use of strengths to the situation. In addition to focusing on the use of signature or top strengths, we suggest a program that would aid gifted students in deciphering when it is most and least appropriate to use top strengths, through a dial-up/dial-down framework for targeted strength use.

This study aims to test the fit model of the influence of character strength and parent attachment on resilience mediated by the religiosity of adolescent victims of the earthquake and tsunami who live on the coast. The conceptual used to explain resilience is based on the socio-ecological perspective of Ungar & Liebenberg (2013). Character strength uses the theory of Seligman (2006). The concept of parent attachment is explained based on Armsden and Greenberg's (1987) theory. And the concept of religiosity is based on Fetzer's theory (1999). The measuring instrument used to measure resilience is YCRM, character strength using VIA-IS for youth, parent attachment using IPPA, and religiosity using the religiosity scale. The data analysis technique used in this study was the Structural Equation Model (SEM) with the help of Amos software. The results showed that the model of the influence of character strength and parent attachment on resilience mediated by the religiosity of youth victims of the earthquake and tsunami living on the coast is fit with the data. Religiosity acts as a mediator of the influence variable between character strength and parent attachment on the resilience of adolescent victims of the earthquake and tsunami living on the coast.

In this article, the new concept of diffusion fields based on partial differential equations is applied to character image processing. Specific diffusion fields are developed according to character image structures and features, depending, on the scope of application. Doing so allows the application of a straightforward one-dimensional numerical scheme to image enhancement, erosion, dilation and thinning. The strength of this approach is the flexibility brought by the diffusion field, which can be defined taking into account specific difficulties of grayscale character images with a minimum of prior information. Thus, the application of the algorithm is shown to be robust to singularity points, the creation of spurious branches, variations in stroke thickness and intensity, multimodality, noise and image background patterns. The resulting enhanced images are noise free with sharp edges and the local typical intensity levels preserved. Thinned characters are connected skeletons located on the ridge of the initial character. Again, the typical intensity of the character and background are preserved.

The present study had the objective of analysing the relationship between Emotional Intelligence, Positive Affect, VIA's virtues and character strengths. Additionally, it was explored if Emotional Intelligence predicted the virtue's levels of the participants, and if Positive Affect constituted a possible mediator. To that end, different measures were used: 419 undergraduate students completed the Spanish version of the Trait Meta-Mood Scale for emotional intelligence (TMMS, Fernández-Berrocal, Extremera & Ramos, 2004). Character strenghts and virtues were assessed with the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS; Peterson, Park, & Seligman, 2005), and Positive Affect (PA) was measured with the Spanish version of the Positive and Negative Affect (NA) Schedule (PANAS; Sandín et al., 1999). Our results showed a significant positive correlation between all the VIA strengths and virtues with TMMS scales Emotional Clarity and Emotion Repair. Emotional Attention showed significant correlations for all the virtues except Temperance. Further analyses demonstrated that TMMS scales predicted VIA virtues, and Positive Affect appeared as a possible mediator in the prediction of Temperance and Humanity virtues. These results support the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and strength of character, as well as the importance of Positive Affect in this relationship.

In spite of the supernatural trappings of Charles Dickens's most famous work, A Christmas Carol, critics from G. K. Chesterton to Edmund Wilson have found its equally famous protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, to be a real character, more fleshed-out and compelling than many of the characters of Dickens's longer, presumably more “serious” novels. Much of the reaction to A Christmas Carol and its protean anti-hero can be summarized by Stephen Prickett's succinct appraisal in his seminal study, Victorian Fantasy: “The strength of A Christmas Carol lies quite simply in its psychological credibility” (54). Scrooge is a character we can believe in, a character that, as Margaret Atwood suggests, “remains fresh and vital. ‘Scrooge Lives!’ we might write on our T-shirts” (xiii).
