Resumen
The early eighteenth-century politician Lord Wilmington ( c.1674–1743) is little-known for his keen gardening interests. But the fruit trees, exotics and succulents he reared in his garden at Chiswick were much admired in his time. Recent discoveries in his archive at Chatsworth House reveal that as well as collecting rare plants he formed a substantial horticultural library and kept up with the latest natural history and botanical publications. The records of his subscriptions to Mark Catesby’s Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama islands – he died before the last two parts wer

Resumen
Lettuce big-vein disease (LBVD) is an important disease of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) worldwide. Two viruses are reported to be associated with the disease, Lettuce big-vein associated virus (LBVaV) and Mirafiori lettuce big-vein virus (MLBVV). The majority of publications shows that MLBVV is the causal agent of LBVD, but two plants with big-vein symptoms and infected only with LBVaV were found by Roggero et al. (2). Lettuce plants with big-vein symptoms were observed in a greenhouse in Ljubljana and in a private garden near Sežana. Chlorotic vein banding with deformations of leaves were obse

Resumen
When the horticulturist Joseph Paxton first published his proposal to house the 1851 Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations inside a glasshouse of enormous scale at Hyde Park, London, the scheme was praised as a more practical alternative to an earlier idea that had been put forward by the Royal Commission for the Great Exhibition’s own Building Committee. However, the feasibility of Paxton’s idea soon became the subject of concern. The use of glasshouses for the cultivation of plants was well established, but could this type of building now be adapted to the task of accommod

Resumen
This chapter turns to the biography of Joseph Paxton in A Thing in Disguise: The Visionary Life of Joseph Paxton (2003), by Kate Colquhoun. Paxton was a farm labourer's son who went on to work at the Horticultural Society's gardens in Chiswick. These were boom times in gardening. Since the eighteenth-century voyages of exploration, hundreds of plant species had been pouring into Britain. Paxton was eventually appointed head gardener at Chatsworth, one of the grandest estates in the realm. Along with Paxton's many achievements, the chapter also explores his friendship with his employer, George
