Christians sometimes adopt a relativist theory of ethics called divine command theory (DCT). This ethical theory holds that ethical principles depend entirely on God’s revealed commands and that these commands can be broken so long as God commands it. A Christian realist alternative to DCT is natural law ethics (NLE). NLE claims that ethical principles are apparent through nature and logical because God is the creator and all humans share in the divine image. Although best known for his perceived critiques of Christianity in his 1967 “Historical Roots” article, I draw upon Lynn Townsend White, jr.’s lesser-known texts and unpublished archival materials to argue that White made a significant, constructive contribution to environmental ethics. Through his rejection of anthropocentric and prudential forms of ethics, White proposed an ethic of compassion for nature rooted in his notion of a “spiritual democracy of all God’s creatures.” This ethical model, referred to here as Christian ecocentrism, is offered as a framework for Christian reflection and

Abstract For a long time the foundations of an Ethic of Nursing have been formulated in terms of Christian charity. The article discusses this concept by examining the roots of modern Nursing in the Kaiserswerther Diakonie. This Christian work -ethic is criticised by modern nursing ethics. lnstead of an Ethic of Charity an Ethic of Care is promoted by the common representatives of a modern ethics of nursing. But such as an Ethic of Christian Charity an Ethic of Care has to deal with those problems: the naturalizing of femininity, the asymmetry of persans in caring relations, the relation betwe

The ethical nature of human transformation in general and psychotherapy in particular means that therapists function as applied ethicists. Efforts to relate or integrate theology and therapy must therefore address ethical issues. Disciplines that might provide a basis for ethical positions–-science and ethics (including Christian ethics)–-are reviewed, along with the adequacy of the scientist-practitioner model to inform the ethical aspects of practice. The specific contributions of Christian ethics to the dialogue needed between ethicists, theologians, and psychotherapy theorists and practiti

This study set within the context of Yoruba cultural perspective, explores the complex mantle of African indigenous and Christian ethics embedded in the hymns of Fanny Crosby(1820–1915). Bridging the gap in the literature that have analyzed Crosby'sdeep-rooted work in Christian theology, the author sargue that the ethical values and moral teachings epitomized in her hymns significantly resonates the indigenous ethics of the Yoruba people, one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria. Through a qualitative analysis of four of Fanny Crosby's hymns, this study identifies thematic counterparts betwee

Christ brought a rebellion to human life according to religious and ethical orders. Christians should put these orders into practice in their daily life. Christian ethics emphasized that morality should unite with Christ and Church's sacred mysteries, otherwise it was not worthy. The central feature of Byzantine culture was Orthodox Christianity. Christian Ethics in the Byzantine Empire was not a systematic philosophical discipline but an occasional response to particular problems posed in everyday life or interpreting the Scripture. Abstract Opposition to physician-assisted suicide is widespread in Christian ethics. However, on a topic as controversial as physician-assisted suicide, no one can reasonably speak for “the Christian” perspective. Natural-law and, specifically, just-war thinking are claimed in the Christian tradition, yet the natural-law contribution to a Christian ethical analysis of physician-assisted suicide requires explanation and defense. Natural-law ethical theory affirms the central role of reason in moral thinking and provides a theoretical resource in contemporary ethics to assist in analyzing specif

Although Christian ethics and contemporary utilitarian ethics both employ terms such as “love” and “compassion” in their efforts to deal with human suffering, they are in fact polar opposite ethical views. This fact is not at all easy to discern. One key to perceiving the radical opposition between them lies in clarifying their respective concepts of love and suffering and the relation between the two. In Christian personalism, suffering is always understood as the suffering of individual persons, while in utilitarianism, suffering is primarily understood as a quantifiable entity detached from
