Resumen
Ever since Pierre Schaeffer’s admonition in his Traité des objets musicaux of 1966 to avoid “preoccupations about how things are made” by “turning our backs on the instrument” and “listening to sound objects with their instrumental causes hidden,” materially oriented studies of sound have attended increasingly to sound objects and to ontologies of sound broadly, often turning away from considerations of the tactile materiality of sound sources. Deviating from this trend, this study focuses squarely on sound source materiality, and on our motivations for either foregrounding or dismissing it in our verbal, visual, and sonic rhetorics. As a case study, I turn to the Early Music movement, understood here as a constellation of cultures invested in the consumption and historically informed production of mostly European music written before c.1750. Seeking to distance themselves from the classical music mainstream, this movement’s participants have often adopted rhetorical stances that foreground and celebrate the materiality of sound sources, particularly instruments and their constituent parts. Rooted partly in the assumption that instruments may act as material conduits to imagined historical soundscapes, these materializing rhetorics are also born out of affinities among producers and consumers of Early Music for musical works whose poetics are themselves bound up in materiality—and in turn, for particular instruments whose sounds tend to animate such poetics. Selected theories of Michel Chion, Roland Barthes, and others are invoked in an effort to situate the verbal, visual, and sonic materializing rhetorics of Early Music cultures within broader discussions of sound source materiality.

Resumen
The article describes the evolution of the English organ under the influence of changes in musical style and liturgical practice between 1830 and 1870. A preliminary discussion of the Georgian organ and the performance conventions of its players provides a benchmark against which to measure the ensuing changes. S.S. Wesley is taken as a case study with reference to changes made to the Hereford Cathedral organ in 1832; it is argued that these reflect Wesley's musical priorities, a point that is further illustrated by a consideration of the registration markings found in the original manuscripts of ‘The Wilderness’ (1832) and ‘Blessed be the God and Father’ (1834). They also demonstrate an innovative use of the pedals. In the following section the influence of Mendelssohn is discussed. His performances of Bach in England during the 1830s and 1840s promoted a radical change is organ design and performance practice; the C-compass organs with German pedal divisions built by (among others) William Hill were ideal instruments both for Bach's organ music and for Mendelssohn's own organ sonatas which combined classical form with a romantic sensibility. The concluding section reviews developments in the years 1850–70. It considers changes in console design and the growing taste for orchestral registers, even in church organs. Choral accompaniments also became more orchestral in character, and a number of representative examples from Ouseley's Special Anthems (1861, 1866) are discussed. Liturgical changes after 1850 are also considered, together with their impact on the role of the organ in worship.

Resumen
Abstract This article analyzes how the multidirectional movement of legal and popular printed texts, newspapers, letters, and citizens contributed to the political and legal influence of individual lawyers across the Atlantic. It is based on a case study of leading common law barrister and Whig MP Thomas Erskine (1750–1823). It examines the dissemination of Erskine's legal and political arguments, and other publications in support of freedom of the press and the constitutional importance of trial by jury in libel trials. Erskine's Country Whig politics, key role in the passage of the 1792 Libel Act, and support for American independence were admired by American lawyers, diplomats, and politicians. His disinterested public service as an advocate meant he personified the ideal of a patriot lawyer that underpinned the classical republican model of law, citizenship, and politics on both sides of the Atlantic. Erskine's powerful, often emotive forensic rhetoric was equally admired as part of a shared transatlantic legal culture, linking law, politics and literature. The speeches were reprinted and widely circulated in edited collections, texts on oratory, trial reports, newspapers, and periodicals; key arguments were also referenced in legal treatises on libel. Hence, parts of his most significant speeches in English libel trials came to be regarded as “usable” legal texts studied by students and re-cited by American defense lawyers in court.

Resumen
This doctoral submission comprises two volumes and is entitled ‘Notated and Implied Piano Pedalling c.1780–1830’. Volume One consists of six CDs and contains performances of works composed between 1781 and 1832, recorded on historical instruments housed in the collection at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. The repertoire includes works by C.P.E. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Hyacinthe Jadin, Clementi, Dussek, Field, Voří!ek, Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Chopin, Robert Schumann and Liszt. The works are performed on seven different pianos, six replicas and one original instrument, dating from 1780–1827. Volume Two is the Exegesis. While the history of pedal mechanisms and various forms of pedal notation have already been expertly researched and documented, it is often difficult to understand the composer’s intentions with regard to the appropriate use of the damper pedal in performance, especially in works from the Classical period. The Exegesis examines the documentation of damper pedal techniques from c.1780–1830 and articulates decisions made with regard to the use of pedal in the performance of this repertoire on historical instruments. The research is performance based, and draws heavily on primary sources and existing scholarship. Comparisons are made between the English, French and Viennese instruments and the schools of piano playing that developed, and the repertoire has been selected to highlight the growing significance of pedalling as an integral part of the performance. The primary outcome of this research resides in the recorded performances themselves. They represent the first fully detailed investigation of the various types of pedalling found in a comprehensive range of repertoire and documented through recordings made on the appropriate instruments.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 2011
