AbstractDrawing on the rich but mostly overlooked history of Guatemala's anti-smallpox campaigns in the 1780s and 1790s, this paper interweaves an analysis of the contribution of colonial medical knowledges and practical experiences with the construction and implementation of imperial science. The history of the anti-smallpox campaigns is traced from the introduction of inoculation in Guatemala in 1780 to the eve of the Spanish Crown-sponsored Royal Maritime Vaccination Expedition in 1803. The paper first analyses the development of what Guatemalan medical physician José Flores called his ‘loc

Incest taboos have long been intriguing to anthropologists because they are apparently common to all human societies. The definition of incest in the Spanish American colonies was codified in law, but not all residents abided by such regulations. This article focuses on incestuous crime in late colonial Guatemala, a region that is underrepresented in incest literature. It shows how preoccupations with incest problematized aspects of kinship practice and discusses the ways colonial actors took advantage of kinship and incest during various crises in their lives. Overall, it demonstrates the pow

In 1678, the painter Antonio Ramírez elaborated a picture explaining the condition of the works of the cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala (now la Antigua Guatemala), a picture that allows us to establish the evolution undergone by the cathedral from the second half of the XVII century to its current state. Throughout this evolution, we want to highlight those construction elements that have been able to withstand not only the course of time, but above all, the force of the numerous earthquakes that have affected Guatemala since 1678 until today. In addition, Ramirez's work offers a se

The present article examines the functions of indigenous advocates whose position as ward leaders (chinamitales) in K’ichee’ societies existed in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and continued into the colonial nineteenth century in Guatemala. This was a hereditary legal and administrative position that elites in K’ichee’an society enjoyed as a result and reward of military conquest in the Pre-Columbian era. Chinamitales advocated for the inhabitants of their wards who were both elites and non-elites in land disputes and in criminal matters. They persisted in indigenous communities from the sixteenth

This dissertation analyzes the gender and ethnic dimensions of cultural authority and power within the process of colonial rule in Guatemala. To do so, I focus on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century accounts of the lives and practices of female healers, midwives, sorcerers, and clandestine cult leaders in the capital, Santiago de Guatemala. Colonial authorities often called these women mujeres de mal vivir, "women who live evil lives." Community members from all sectors of colonial society consulted women who practiced sexual witchcraft, magical healing, and popular religious rituals in multi-

Resumen
The 1585 Relación Geográfica Map of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala gives scholars a rare glimpse of sixteenth- century southern Guatemala. The map displays the use of Spanish, Nahua, and Maya perspectives. The coexistence of indigenous Nahua versus Spanish or European iconographies and narratives is a theme constantly explored in the studies of the Relaciones Geográficas maps. However, the opposition of two different indigenous narratives and iconographies, as well as Spanish, is not. This project examines the convergences and conflicts among these narratives and iconographies as evidenced on

The cultural and historical context in which La hija del adelantado was first published in 1866, is very important in this study because it helps us understand why Milla chose to write about the early colonial past, and why he valued the traditions and customs of those years. It is also shown how the author---mixing history and fiction---denounces the system of exploitation practiced by the colonizers of America, and uncovers the historical roots of some of the contemporary problems that affected the Guatemala of those days.
The main purpose of this work is to highlight the importance that

Resumen
This paper will argue that the connections that exist between architecture and political powers are located in representational functions of architecture. Representation is defined here as a culture-specific process of establishing the relationships between reality and the signs created to symbolize that reality. Architecture of Guatemala provides a unique material to study how representational constitution of symbolic places reflects an ideological struggle of two different cultures. To substantiate this point, I will expand on Tzvetan Todorov’s observations made in “The Conquest of America”
