Abstract/description: The article is an analysis of the tendencies in spatial distribution of the mechanisms working in the economies that can be regarded as peripheral, or dependent. According to Szlajfer, economic mechanisms exists that influence the geography of development. The mechanisms relate to the separation of space with "autarchic" economy and area with economy that is related to foreign exchange. He presents a historical overview of economic development in Costarica as an example of such mechanism. Short description written by Michał Gilewski

Resumen
The presented work summarises new and existing phenotypic and phylogenetic information for the genus Cruziohyla. Data based on morphology and skin peptide profiling supports the identification of a separate new species. Specimens of Cruziohyla calcarifer (Boulenger, 1902) occurring in Ecuador, Colombia, two localities in Panama, and one in the south east Atlantic lowlands of Costa Rica, distinctly differ from those occurring along the Atlantic versant of Central America from Panama northwards through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, to Honduras. A new species—Cruziohyla sylviae sp. n.—(the type locality: Alto Colorado in Costa Rica)—is diagnosed and described using an integrated approach from morphological and molecular data. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of the 16S rRNA gene confirms the new species having equal minimum 6.2% genetic divergence from both true C. calcarifer and Cruziohyla craspedopus.

In Costa Rica there are six officially recognized indigenous languages. Each enjoys a different condition in terms of its traditions and number of speakers, among others. Despite efforts of the Costa Rican government and other researchers since 1995, the languages have met endogenous and exogenous difficulties that have resulted in the weakening and even loss of the languages. This leads us to what happened to Boruca, one of the indigenous languages of Costa Rica which can now be considered an extinct language. This article presents a general description of the Boruca people, their traditions and main characteristics, and it also introduces the reader to a general typological description of the language where the main features of its grammar are briefly discussed.

Texto completo
Resumen
The taxonomic status of the four New World species of Salina MacGillivray with bidentate mucro is uncertain. The first two species to be described, S. bidentata (Handschin) and S. wolcotti Folsom, are so poorly described by modern standards that it is unclear if they represent distinct species or the same, colour-pattern variable forms. This contribution presents additions to the description of S. beta Christiansen & Bellinger based on the holotype, a redescription of S. bidentata and S. wolcotti based on freshly collected material from Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Florida, USA, and description of a new species, S. thibaudi, from Costa Rica and Guadaloupe. Based on analysis of chaetotaxic patterns it is concluded that S. bidentata and S. wolcotti are distinct species, although it remains unclear if S. ventricolor Gruia, from Cuba is distinct from S. wolcotti. The discovery in Costa Rica and Guadaloupe of S. thibaudi, showing a distinct chaetotaxy, but with colour pattern identical to that illustrated in the original description of S. wolcotti, suggests that records of S. wolcotti outside Puerto Rico require verification. A key for the identification of all species of Salina reported from the Americas is provided.

Resumen
We review the systematics of the Dendrophidion nuchale complex in Central America and northern South America andrecognize three species. The names D. nuchale (W. Peters) and D. clarkii Dunn apply to two of the species. The third isdescribed as a new species, D. rufiterminorum. It differs from D. clarkii and D. nuchale in coloration and hemipenial char-acters but all three species of the nuchale complex are very similar in scutellation characters. Dendrophidion nuchale isdistributed in the coast ranges and adjacent foothills of northern Venezuela, and in a seemingly disjunct population in theSerranía de Perijá in western Venezuela. The name clarkii was recently applied to all populations of the nuchale complexfrom Belize and Guatemala in the north to western Colombia and Ecuador in the south. Herein, we restrict the name D.clarkii to populations in lower Middle America (Costa Rica and Panama) and west of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador.Dendrophidion rufiterminorum is distributed in northern Central America (Belize, Guatemala, northern Honduras) fol-lowed by a broad disjunction without records of the species throughout most of Honduras and Nicaragua; thereafter, a fewspecimens and photographs document the presence of D. rufiterminorum on the Caribbean versant of southern Nicaraguaand Costa Rica, and uplands of northwestern Costa Rica (Pacific versant). Two localities of sympatry between D. rufiter-minorum and D. clarkii are known in Costa Rica (one on the Atlantic versant, the other on Pacific versant). Nonetheless, there is sparse documentation of either species in Costa Rica. The populations referred to D. clarkii in southwestern CostaRica, the eastern half of Panama, and western Colombia and Ecuador need further study. Hemipenes of species of thenuchale complex are described. All three species have a pair of enormously enlarged sulcate spines and a regular lineararray of enlarged spines (spinose annulus) encircling the base of the apical region. These characters are also shared with D. dendrophis sensu lato but not other members of the dendrophis species group.

Resumen
The Neotropical genus Rhyacopsyche Müller, 1879, was last reviewed in 1971 when 5 species were known. Since that time, the genus has gradually grown to 13 species: R. andina Flint, 1991 (Colombia, Peru, Venezuela), R. chichotla Bueno & Hamilton, 1986 (Mexico), R. duplicispina Flint, 1996 (Tobago), R. hagenii Müller, 1879b (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay), R. jimena Flint, 1991 (Colombia), R. matthiasi Flint, 1991 (Colombia), R. mexicana (Flint, 1967) (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua), R. mutisi Mey & Joost, 1990 (Colombia), R. obliqua Flint, 1971 (Mexico), R. peruviana Flint, 1975 (Ecuador, Peru), R. torulosa Flint, 1971 (Costa Rica, Guatemala), R. turrialbae Flint, 1971 (Costa Rica), and R. yatay Angrisano, 1989 (Argentina). Thirteen new species are described and illustrated: R. benwa (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru), R. bulbosa (Brazil), R. colei (Venezuela), R. colombiana (Colombia), R. colubrinosa (Ecuador, Peru), R. dikrosa (Brazil), R. flinti (Venezuela), R. hasta (Peru), R. intraspira (Peru), R. otarosa (Venezuela), R. patulosa (Brazil), R. rhamphisa (Colombia, Costa Rica), and R. tanylobosa. (Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela). The distribution of Rhyacopsyche is widened to include Bolivia and Nicaragua. Detailed illustrations are presented for all species as well as diagnoses, descriptions, and a taxonomic key. A species level phylogenetic analysis using PAUP* 4.0b 10 was performed. A heuristic search was conducted based on 20 morphological characters of the male genitalia, with species of Ochrotrichia and Metrichia used as outgroups. A strict consensus of 23 equally parsimonious trees is presented. The analysis revealed 3 characters supporting the monophyly of Rhyacopsyche. The monophyly of 1 of the 2 previously established species groups, the turrialbae group, is supported.

Resumen
This paper provides a description of the language contact situation in Limón, Costa Rica. It presents a theoretical account regarding language contact in this area and discusses why this linguistic situation leads to challenges for the definition of diglossia and bilingualism that have traditionally been used to describe it. The analysis concludes with support for the thesis that two varieties of English interact with a variety of Spanish in the Costa Rican area of Limón and result in a new variety of Spanish due to this language contact. This study highlights the need to explore these varieties of Spanish to fully understand this contact situation.

Resumen
The description of this single species is necessary to facilitate the publication of ongoing research conducted by Rita Vargas at the Museum of Zoology, University of Costa Rica, dealing with the associated microfauna. Presently 24 species of Leptogorgia have been reported for the eastern Pacific, 13 of which have been found in Costa Rica (Breedy & Cortés 2011). Although octocoral surveys have been conducted as part of biodiversity studies, there is no published information regarding the occurrence of this taxon in Golfo Dulce. Here we describe a new species of Leptogorgia and compare it with other Leptogorgia species with similar characteristics. Golfo Dulce is a bay located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It is about 50 km long, 10–15 km wide, and covers an area of approximately 680 km². The inner part of Golfo Dulce has a maximum depth of slightly over 200 m with a 60 m deep sill at the opening to the Pacific Ocean (Cortés 1999). It has been considered a tropical fjord because of the bathymetry and the presence of anoxic deep waters (Cortés 1999, Svendsen et al. 2006). Specimens were collected by Scuba diving, preserved in 70% ethanol or air dried, and treated and identified following the current methodology (Breedy & Guzman 2002). The holotype and paratypes are deposited in the Museo de Zoología, Universidad de Costa Rica (MZUCR, formerly UCR), San José, P.O. Box 11501-2060, Costa Rica.

Resumen
Pineapple is a highly demanded fruit in international markets due to its unique appearance and flavor, high fiber content, vitamins, folic acid, and minerals. It makes pineapple production and processing a significant source of income for producing countries, such as Costa Rica. This review collects bibliographic information dating back to the beginnings of pineapple production in Costa Rica to the state of the market today. It details the impacts of its production chain and proposes a biorefinery as a solution to environmental problems. Besides the potentiality of new sustainable markets to contribute to the post-COVID-19 economy in Costa Rica is highlighted. The general characteristics of pineapple by-products -cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and other high-value products like bromelain y saponin- are described, as well as the primary processes for their ex-traction via biorefinery and main applications in the medical field. Finally, a brief description of the main works in the literature involving modeling and simulation studies of pineapple by-products properties is included.

Resumen
Abstract This work offers an in-depth description of the main morphosyntactic (and lexical) features found in present Costa Rican Spanish, a lesser-known Central American variety. Text corpora and sociolinguistic surveys help us to provide an updated grammatical overview, which takes into account most categories: nouns and adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and idioms, and is illustrated by examples taken both from formal and informal settings. By comparing these features with previous grammatical descriptions, this study helps in identifying some common American features – such as the use of hasta and una mi amiga – as well as some specific patterns – such as the prominence of several suffixes and parasynthetic verbs, as well as some adverbs – in present-day Costa Rican Spanish, some of which remain to be incorporated in the Academy grammar.

Resumen
ABSTRACT: Picture dictionaries are thematically organized resources for the presentation of (especially referential) word meaning, mainly—and sometimes solely—through visual strategies such as illustrations, images, arrows, and colors. This article contrasts the bilingual alphabetical tradition with a monolingual visuo-thematic approach to the creation of lexicographic resources for Costa Rican Indigenous languages. It then illustrates the latter approach with the description of the process followed to create picture dictionaries and other visual resources for these languages in two projects of the University of Costa Rica: Linguistic Diversity and Patrimony of Costa Rica and Languages and Oral Traditions of Costa Rica (https://www.dipalicori.ucr.ac.cr). The resources produced in these projects correspond to the frame of collaborative dictionary-making as explained by Anderson (2020). The paper highlights the need to resist the perceived tendency to default to bilingual, alphabetically organized dictionaries to document minority languages. Instead, it invites readers to reconsider possible misconceptions regarding the complementary role of pictures in lexicographic products and encourages lexicographers and other stakeholders to consider monolingual visuo-thematic options for documenting, safeguarding cultural-linguistic knowledge, and supporting education and revitalization of under-resourced and endangered Indigenous languages.

Resumen
Tick bites in humans are associated with the transmission of pathogens, anaphylactic shock, paralysis, and secondary infections. In this work we described six cases of tick bites in patients from Panama and Costa Rica. These bites were provoked for adults of Ornithodoros puertoricensis, Amblyomma cf. oblongoguttatum, Amblyomma ovale, and Ixodes cf. boliviensis, and a nymph of Amblyomma mixtum. The relationships of these species of ticks with the environment are explained. Among the reactions observed in the patients there are blisters, maculo-papular rash, granuloma, lymphadenopathy, and erythema migrans-like rash, but none referred symptoms compatible with an infectious disease. In the collected ticks a PCR battery was developed to rule out Borrelia, Rickettsia, Anaplasmataceae, and Coxiella diseases to the ticks from the cases 1, 2, 3 and 4, with negative results. Although no pathogen infections were evidenced, these finding indicate that the tick bites constitute a public health problem what goes unnoticed in many countries.

Resumen
Description of three new species of katydids from Costa Rica (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) Three new species of katydids from the Reserva Biológica Alberto Manuel Brenes (Alajuela) in Costa Rica (Central America) are described. The specimens were collected in the course of the Project INVARTRAB developed by the Central University of Costa Rica and the INIA de Madrid (España). The specimens were sampled by direct prospection on plants and light traps. The new species belong to the genera Phlugis, Scopiorinus and Viadana, respectively. Phlugis ramirezi n. sp. has little developed tegmens and wings, male tenth abdominal tergite ending in two spiniform processes, cerci curved with a basal spur, and four teeth in the apex. Scopiorinus estebani n. sp. shows male tenth abdominal tergite with a longer than broad expansion, subgenital plate depressed in the middle, and lateral spiniform processes at the end. Viadana rowelli n. sp. has rhomboidal tegmens and male cerci with an internal branch with serrulated apex inserted in the last third. Main characters are illustrated and compared in related species in each genus.

Resumen
Zamia acuminata has remained an obscure, poorly understood species for over a century due to possibly misinterpreted or erroneous locality data on the unicate sterile type specimen, a very brief protologue description, the misidentification of the plants from El Valle de Antón in Panama as Z. acuminata, and the erroneous determinations of plants of Z. acuminata from Costa Rica as Z. fairchildiana. Recently collected material from San José Province in Costa Rica is here determined to be identical to the single sterile leaf material of the holotype of Zamia acuminata. We consider Z. acuminata to be a Costa Rican endemic species restricted to the western Talamanca mountain range in San José Province, and that the Zamia from El Valle de Antón in Panama, which has previously been referred to as Zamia acuminata, to be a new species, here described as Zamia nana.

Resumen
The parasitoid wasp genus Saltagenes Diller, 1995 is known only from the original description of a single species from Argentina. However, undescribed Saltagenes species occur throughout the Neotropical region and into the southern Nearctic. Here, I review the Saltagenes species of Costa Rica and describe seven new species: Saltagenes alboannulatus sp. nov., S. atrosomus sp. nov., S. escazuensis sp. nov., S. gauldi sp. nov., S. modicum sp. nov., S. pseudatrosomus sp. nov., and S. rotundiceps sp. nov. The generic diagnosis is revised to account for hitherto unknown morphological diversity of Saltagenes. An illustrated key and specimen images are provided to aid in identification. Saltagenes is now represented by eight described species though more than double that figure remain undescribed from outside of Costa Rica. More broadly, this study highlights the paucity of our knowledge of Costa Rican Ichneumoninae.

Resumen
The pineapple tarsonemid mite Steneotarsonemus ananas (Tryon), 1898 is associated with pineapple around the world, including Costa Rica. Here, we report its association with Neoregelia sp. (Bromeliaceae) for the first time. These mites damaged the plantlets considerably, affecting the esthetic quality of the product and thus causing economic losses to the local growers. This discovery prompted us to redescribe the adult females and males from the type host and locality (pineapple in Queensland, Australia) and compare it with the original description, subsequent descriptions, and material collected from the USA, Costa Rica, and Colombia on pineapple, Neoregelia, and an unidentified bromeliad. Further specimens from pineapple in Guatemala were identified as the same species and represent the first record for this country. We concur with previous observations that the original description by Tryon is not the same species in subsequent descriptions. We tentatively consider all specimens examined the same as those described as S. ananas in succeeding descriptions, i.e., Steneotarsonemus ananas Tryon sensu Beer.
