Fifty-three school counselors and administrators employed in middle and high school settings were surveyed regarding their thoughts about school districts working collaboratively with non-school mental health professionals to respond to the mental health needs of students. In addition, the survey sought to understand what school counselors and their hiring principals/vice principals regard as the roles and responsibilities of school counselors and the scope of school counselor training.

Counselor educators and mental health counselors often have a lukewarm attitude toward counseling research and evidence-based practice. This attitude may be because of a perceived mismatch between evidence-based technical procedures and the relational orientation that most counselors value. To warm up mental health counselors' attitudes toward evidence-based research and practice, we propose a relationally oriented research agenda that focuses on integrating evidence-based relationship factors (EBRFs) into counselor training and practice. Eight EBRFs are defined and operationalized, and specif

The professional identity of school counselors has evolved over time. This article traces the historical context driving this evolution, and suggests it is time for the profession to conjoin the roles of educational leader and mental health professional. This proposal is prompted by heightened awareness of unmet student mental health needs, referrals that go unmet, school counselors displaced by other mental health providers in schools, the potential loss of the unique school counselor role, and the natural link between the mental health professional role and the array of personal-social facto

Few counselor training programs offer wellness courses or training on how to ethically and competently integrate physical and mental health issues when working with clients. We propose that the mental health profession adopt competencies for wellness as part of standard counselor preparation and continuing education.

A strong, distinctive professional identity is essential for the survival of mental health professions (Fall, Leviov, Jennings, & Eberts, 2000). Although the literature of the various mental health professions offers varying definitions of professional identity, differentiating their services from one another continues to be a problem (Remley & Herlihy, 2005). This uncertainty inhibits uniformity within professions, and causes confusion within the public as to what each mental health field actually does and does not do.
