This finding demonstrates that the precipitation of calcium carbonate during the freezing of sea ice is not restricted to the Antarctic, where it was observed for the first time in 2008. AbstractThe drive for sustainable concrete production favors the use of high replacement levels of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in the concrete mix. The use of SCMs such as fly ash and slag, however, although they improve the sustainability of concrete production as well as most concrete durability properties, increases the carbonation rate. Abstract Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was synthesized in the presence of the water-soluble biopolymer carboxymethyl inulin (CMI) by a precipitation method. The obtained CaCO3 crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the polymorph of the synthesized calcium carbonate crystals changed from pure calcite to the mixture of vaterite and calcite in the presence of biopolymer at a concentration of 0.5 g/L. Abstract The focus of this paper is the in-situ assessment of calcium carbonate formation on a stainless steel surface. Calcium carbonate formation is studied by Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction (SXRD) with a flow cell that allows in-situ and real-time measurements. The effects of a commercial scale inhibitor, Polyphosphinocarboxylic acid (PPCA) on formation is also studied. Previously silicon was used as the substrate for SXRD measurements and therefore the effects of the substrate nature on calcium carbonate formation and its inhibition by PPCA are discussed.
