Resumen
Massimo Quaini (1941-2017) was one of the most eminent figures in geography. A group of scholars dedicate this book to him in order to keep unwinding, in the world’s labyrinth, the thread of his reflections, that placed geography among territorial sciences making them object of civil commitment. His critical, transdisciplinary thinking did never recognize boundaries but only fruitful differences of perspective: his highest legacy, perhaps, lays in this impulse to integrate different skills (of historians, poets, archaeologists, ecologists, planners…) to return the world’s places their value. This is therefore not a typical ‘in memoriam’ book on Quaini’s topics but, as we dare say, a book with Quaini.

Resumen
Grown men do not play with paper dolls; or, at least, they are not supposed to. Nevertheless, self-taught Chicago artist Henry Darger (1892–1973) worked over many decades to create an elaborate fictional world. This chapter examines a series of collage-paintings that Darger like created at mid-century to consider the significance of paper dolls to his art. It argues that domestic space and girlish crafts offered Darger opportunities for creative expression that were otherwise inaccessible to him in the public sphere due to his designation as a sexually degenerate man. In the privacy of his apartment, away from society’s judgments, Darger offered an alternative to the restrictive sexual norms of his time by celebrating ambiguously gendered children.

Der von Karl Kroeschell und Dorothee Mußgnug herausgegebene Briefwechsel zwischen den Rechtshistorikern Wilhelm Arnold (1826-1883) und Andreas Heusler (1834-1921) setzt 1858 ein, als beide in Basel tätig waren. Nach Arnolds Berufung an seine alte Marburger Fakultät übernahm Heusler 1863 den freigewordenen Lehrstuhl. In der bis zu Arnolds plötzlichem Tod geführten Korrespondenz unterrichteten sie sich nicht nur über die universitären Probleme ihrer kleinen Fakultäten. Auch Fragen der aktuellen Basler, hessischen und Reichspolitik und der Kirchenpolitik kamen in ihrem Briefwechsel zur Sprache. Die auf beide Familien bezogene Freundschaft durchdrang alle Briefe. Sie fand ihre letzte Bekundung darin, dass Heusler nach dem Tod des Freundes dessen 2. Auflage „Deutsche Geschichte. Fränkische Zeit“ zum Abschluss brachte.

This chapter explores the connections between dystopian science fiction and gothic fiction. It links science fiction to a tradition of European utopian and surrealist writing, situating the genre equally within discourses of science and the gothic. This perspective, the chapter argues, was perhaps more possible from the vantage point of 1973 than it would have been for earlier critics: the scientific romance tradition was rooted in a Victorian culture that believed in empire, technology, and progress, even if it was not always convinced by their contemporary instantiations. The dramatic shifts in British culture during the Blitz and in the immediate post-war period looked back on such optimism with a rather jaundiced eye: British global hegemony was distinctly at an end. It is little wonder, then, that the speculative fictions of this period turned toward darker tones of dystopia and the gothic.

There is indeed a "miracle" in the 1970 film Wanda. This film has survived, despite decades of neglect, to emerge into the fuliginous light of an era that may just be ready to strain at grasping its harsh and brutal truths -- truths that reveal the imbrication of the psychic in the social and the experiential in political structures. Barbara Loden's film dares to suggest that the social and ethical functions of art should not necessarily be redemptive – that salvation is a cheap and spurious form of consolation that few can afford in this world. This film, made by a woman who knew all too well what it means to be defined through and by her material circumstances (and her relationships to men), and that is so relentlessly ferocious in its refusal to assuage and comfort the viewer, has always been a form of future feminism. Wanda does not brook the comforts of positivity, of aspiration, or even the luxury of selfhood. This film, Still Life contends, is so radical in its feminist-anti-capitalist politics of refusal that we are still struggling to keep up with it. It delineates precisely how the personal is political and why this matters now more than ever. Wanda, a film about a woman who refuses to be saved or to save herself, who lacks the means and energy to alter anything in her life, who lives in a permanent state of blockage, impasse and failure is, as this publication suggests, the film of our contemporary moment.

This chapter examines the antievolutionists' move away from arguing with scientists and toward providing a scientific-sounding argument for mass consumption, usually in the guise of “intelligent design” (ID)—a tactic that allowed creationism to appeal to a broader audience. It first considers initiatives meant to make creationism attractive to the scientifically unlettered before discussing how proponents made individual rights and freedom of expression consistent themes in the fight to teach creationism in public schools. It then looks at two books that reenergized the fight against evolution and became central to the new offensive: Phillip E. Johnson's Darwin on Trial (1991) and Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box (1996). It also describes the approaches adopted by creationists in the face of court rulings that rejected the teaching of creationism and ID in public schools. The chapter concludes with an assessment of ID advocates' “wedge strategy,” The Wedge Document, and the collection of papers titled Mere Creation: Science, Faith & Intelligent Design.

Sin embargo, en Colombia estas experiencias son más reducidas y poco conocidas. Este libro busca darle cuerpo a estas experiencias y reunirlas para los lectores. Hay capítulos teóricos sobre la historia, sobre el erotismo, sobre la teoría de la escena; también de sistematización de experiencias de intervención y de formación; y uno de investigación aplicada sobre el psicodrama colectivo. El presente es un texto útil para iniciarse en el estudio del psicodrama y especialmente para conocer sus desarrollos en Colombia, especialmente en la ciudad de Medellín; un libro que se instaura como piedra fundacional del movimiento psicodramático colombiano.

This rhetorical study of the various language strategies and competing worldviews involved in the 140-year argument between Biblical creationists and Darwinian evolutionists focuses on the 1860 Huxley/Wilberforce debate, the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, and the 1981 Arkansas Creation-Science Trial. When Darwin published hisOrigins of Speciesin 1859, he initiated a debate about the origin of human life and the role of God in human affairs scarcely equalled in world history. Smout traces the response of Biblical creationists to Darwinian evolutionists. Looking carefully at the stories told and the tactics used by both sides, he analyzes all available accounts of the original debate culminating in the 1860 Huxley/Wilberforce debate, the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, and the 1981 Arkansas Creation-Science Trial. Professor Smout argues that both sides in the controversy use various language strategies to persuade the culture as a whole to see the world that they see and to enact their position as public policy. As Smout illustrates, the problem is that both sides rely on an inadequate conception of language as a namer of timeless realities rather than as an instrument used by human communities to achieve their goals. He attempts to articulate a better view of language and to show how it might help solve intractable arguments such as this. He argues that we should see language as a tool that shapes what we see, and definitions of terms as political acts rather than statements of fact made by disciplinary experts. An important analysis for students and scholars in rhetoric, history, religion, and sociology.

Von dem unabgeschlossenen Projekt einer Volksausgabe der Kantischen Schriften in 5 Bänden, mit dem Arnold Kowalewski von der Stadt Königsberg 1941 beauftragt worden war, um einen Überblick über das Kantische Schaffen zu erleichtern, ist allein das Typoskript für Band 1 vollständig ausgearbeitet worden. Mit der vorliegenden Ausgabe wird ein Erbteil der Königsberger Kant-Forschung, die wesentliche Beiträge zur Sicherung und Überlieferung von Kants Werk geleistet hat, bewahrt. Arnold Kowalewski (1873-1945) war der letzte Vertreter der Königsberger Kant-Forschung, die mit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges abbrach. Von dem unabgeschlossenen Projekt einer Volksausgabe der Kantischen Schriften in 5 Bänden, mit dem er von der Stadt Königsberg 1941 beauftragt worden war, um einen Überblick über das Kantische Schaffen zu erleichtern, ist allein das Typoskript für Band 1 vollständig ausgearbeitet worden. Der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit war der erreichte Stand der Realisierung unbekannt. Typoskript, korrigierte Druckfahnen und weitere Dokumente zur Entstehung der Ausgabe blieben bis in den Sommer 1998 Teil des unveröffentlichten Nachlasses. Die besondere Bedeutung des im Nachlaß von Arnold Kowalewski bewahrten Manuskripts mit Dokumenten und Quellentexten zu Kants Lehrtätigkeit liegt heute darin, daß der anerkannte Kant-Philologe und -Interpret für seine Edition noch auf Texte und Zeugnisse aus den Beständen der Königsberger Bibliotheken zugreifen konnte, die seit 1945 verschollen sind. Dies gilt vor allem für die ausgewählten Texte aus Kants Vorlesungen über Anthropologie, Geographie, Logik und Metaphysik, die - wenn auch in sekundärer Überlieferung - durch den vorliegenden Band erhalten sind.

To many evolutionary biologists, the central challenge of their discipline is to explain adaptation, the appearance of design in the living world. With the theory of evolution by natural selection, Charles Darwin elegantly showed how a purely mechanistic process can achieve this striking feature of nature. Since Darwin, the way many biologists think about evolution and natural selection is as a theory about individual organisms. Over a century later, a subtle but radical shift in perspective emerged with the gene’s-eye view of evolution in which natural selection was conceptualized as a struggle between genes for replication and transmission to the next generation. This viewpoint culminated with the publication of The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins (Oxford University Press, 1976) and is now commonly referred to as selfish gene thinking. The gene’s-eye view has subsequently played a central role in evolutionary biology, although it continues to attract controversy. The central aim of this accessible book is to show how the gene’s-eye view differs from the traditional organismal account of evolution, trace its historical origins, clarify typical misunderstandings and, by using examples from contemporary experimental work, show why so many evolutionary biologists still consider it an indispensable heuristic. The book concludes by discussing how selfish gene thinking fits into ongoing debates in evolutionary biology, and what they tell us about the future of the gene’s-eye view of evolution. The Gene’s-Eye View of Evolution is suitable for graduate-level students taking courses in evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, and evolutionary genetics, as well as professional researchers in these fields. Szenen aus Roy Anderssons jüngstem Film "Über die Unendlichkeit" (2019) fügen sich – wie auch in anderen Filmen des Regisseurs – zu einer Reihe dramatisch lose verbundener Episoden. Darin wird die menschliche Existenz in ihrer ganzen Würde und Lächerlichkeit verdichtet. Alles Geschehen erscheint profan und transzendent, alltäglich und surreal zugleich. Roy Andersson ist ein lakonischer Erzähler und ein äußerst präziser Choreograph, der seine Filme aus Miniaturen fügt, in denen sich gerade deshalb das große Ganze zeigt, weil sich kaum etwas ereignet. Zärtlich und mitleidlos wird das menschliche Leben geschildert, die Sehnsucht nach Liebe, die Suche nach Sinn, die Bürde des Alltags, die Schrecken des Krieges, die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und der Traum von der Unendlichkeit.

Resumen
Band 12 der »Nachgelassenen Manuskripte und Texte« umfasst vor allem das gründlich ausgearbeitete Vorlesungsmanuskript der 1920/21 in Hamburg gehaltenen Vorlesung »Schillers philosophische Weltansicht«. Cassirer argumentiert darin in fünf Kapiteln für die innere Bedingtheit von philosophischem System und dichterischem Schaffen bei Schiller. In Schillers Werk sieht er einen neuen Stil in der Philosophie entstehen, der sich dadurch auszeichnet, dass der philosophische, abstrakte Gedanke je immer schon eine gestaltete Form hat und philosophische und künstlerische Momente in einem inneren Abhängigkeitsverhältnis stehen. Philosophische Weltansicht ist zugleich auch die Weltansicht des Künstlers, und Kunst erhält damit eine herausragende Stellung im System der geistigen Kultur. Das Manuskript der Schiller-Vorlesung stellt neben dem Kapitel »Freiheitsproblem und Formproblem in der klassischen Ästhetik« in »Freiheit und Form« von 1916 die intensivste direkte Auseinandersetzung Cassirers mit Schiller dar. Der zeitgleich mit der Vorlesung erschienene Text aus »Idee und Gestalt«, »Die Methodik des Idealismus in Schillers philosophischen Schriften« (1921), erscheint vor dem Hintergrund des ausführlicheren Manuskripts als die Behandlung eines Spezialproblems – des Methodengedankens – innerhalb der größeren Fragen nach der Symbolfunktion der Kunst und der Rolle der ästhetischen Anschauung. Mit der Veröffentlichung des in diesem Band erschlossenen Manuskriptes wird auch deutlich, wie viel Cassirers eigene Antworten auf diese Fragen sich seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Schiller verdanken.

After a brief introduction on stemmatic method, this book contains genealogical investigations of the textual traditions of Quintus Curtius Rufus and then Dictys Cretensis. The sections on each author begin with a list of MSS and incunables that will be discussed (they number just over 150 for Curtius, about 80 for Dictys) and then a survey of existing scholarship. There then follows the classification of the MSS and incunables; most of the MSS of both authors were produced in Italy in the fifteenth-century. In the section on Curtius MSS B = Bern, Burgerbibliothek 451, Br = Brussels 10161, and A= Paris, lat. 5720, owned by Petrarch are shown to have been very productive. For Dictys it is argued that a stemma codicum can be established. First witnesses related to G = Sankt Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek 197 (these include an important lost MS of Poggio) are discussed, then those related to MS E, the codex Aesinas, owned by Stefano Guarnieri. There follows discussion of the archetype, of the way in which proper attention to the stemma codicum can improve the text, and of the excerpts from Dictys found in MSS of Dares.
