Resumen
A return visit to Dhanam coincides with preparations for the ordination of her older son as a Roman Catholic priest. The elaborate celebration is both a boon and a burden to her family and her village. Both of her seminarian sons support Dhanam’s possession experiences and healing work, even as their studies are supported by the work of their parents. In finally relating the details of her first possession by Mata, Dhanam illuminates the depth of shared Hindu and Christian discourses and practices in the region. As the author tries to understand how Mātā’s possession of Dhanam is perceived by Dhanam and her community, she also examines the agency exercised in these practices. The language of possession is parsed carefully. The author also considers the impact of her presence on the field site and data.

Resumen
This chapter describes the ways through which the Brazilian government may have access to personal data in possession of private-sector organizations with a specific focus on identifying the possibility of systematic access. There is no comprehensive data protection legislation in Brazil, but specific and sparse statutes regulate governmental access in areas such as telecommunications, wiretapping, financial data, money laundering, and national intelligence. There have been many conflicting decisions in the judiciary about governmental access to personal data, particularly registration data. In order to address this issue, a statute in 2012 expanded the investigative powers of the police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, granting them access to registration data regardless of a court order. Brazil’s Internet Bill of Rights from 2014 aims to provide further clarity on some unresolved issues at the same time that it creates new ones.

Companies that collect personal data in the course of their business must be accountable for the safe and fair management of that data. The accountability of companies as data stewards extends to processing by their vendors and partners to whom data is disclosed, in a chain of accountability that can extend through multiple links. However, when a government entity demands that a company disclose data in its possession or control, the chain of accountability can be broken if government itself, shielded by secrecy, is not accountable. This chapter examines what companies can do to remain accountable in the face of government disclosure demands. In addition, it concludes that the principles and practices of accountability developed around the handling of personal information in commercial contexts are applicable within government agencies, including when demanding disclosure of data held by the private sector.

Resumen
After the September 11 attacks, law enforcement's mission expanded to include, at times even prioritize, the general “prevention, deterrence and disruption” of terrorist attacks, which presumed a new emphasis upon threat detection and identification by analyzing patterns in larger, less specific bodies of information. Indeed, the unprecedented level of “third-party” possession of information inevitably makes the private sector the most reliable and comprehensive source of information available to law enforcement and intelligence agencies alike. This chapter explores the potential applications of systematic government access to data held by third-party private-sector intermediaries that would not be considered public information sources but, rather, data generated based on the role these intermediaries play in facilitating economic and business transactions (including personal business, such as buying groceries or staying at a hotel on vacation).

Lord, Errol. What it is to Correctly Respond to Reasons. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815099.003.0005.

Resumen
This chapter defends an account of what it is to correctly respond to possessed normative reasons. This view is intimately connected to my account of possession. When one possesses a reason r to X, one is in a position to manifest knowledge about how to use r as the reason it is to X. When one responds for r, one manifests this know-how. This manifesting is spelled out in terms of essentially normative dispositions, which are dispositions that are essentially sensitive to some normative facts. The view is defended by showing how it (i) explains core data about responding for normative reasons; and (ii) solves problems involving deviant causal chains.

Resumen
Mapping and Monitoring Bullying and Violence is a guidebook for district and school education leaders and professionals to reduce incidents of violence and bullying and enhance students' well-being. Written in a step-by-step format, the text is designed to assist in collecting and making better use of data on non-academic issues in schools, such as reports of victimization, weapon and drug possession, theft of personal property, suicide ideation, and other areas. The authors advocate an ongoing monitoring approach that involves collecting information from multiple audiences about what is taking place in and around schools. One part of this process is mapping, which gives school leaders, students, and staff members a visual record of areas of the campus considered safe, alongside those that students view to be places where they might encounter bullying, harm, or trouble. Other common parts of such systems are surveys among students, educators, and parents. The authors include practical examples of how to design such a system, gather current information, analyze and display the data, share it with different audiences, and use it to find solutions. Ultimately, this timely guidebook is a must-have for social workers, psychologists, counselors, nurses, and others working to improve safety in schools.

Resumen
Over the past thirty years, the generative framework has greatly contributed to the study of both the internal and external syntax of spatial adpositions, with the intent—among many other things—of giving a unitary account of their heterogeneous nature and behavior. Once the Cinderellas of grammar, prepositions have been extensively investigated in earlier research. The major result of these studies was to show that prepositional phrases have a complex internal structure, and that the grammatical encoding of locative meaning has its own place in UG. This volume constitutes the implementation and the ideal continuation of the seminal proposals in the generative tradition. The essays collected in the first part of the volume not only test these proposals against new (micro-)comparative data, but also shed new light on the relation between spatial expressions and other semantic relations like possession. The second part of the volume looks beyond spatial PPs, exploring the role of Ps not only in non-spatial environments such as comitatives, but also in more general phenomena like verbal affixation, ellipsis, and complementation.

Magda, Raczynska. 2 Loss of Proprietary Interest in an Asset. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198796138.003.0003.

Texto completo
Resumen
This chapter examines the circumstances in which title-based interests and security interests are lost in assets in which they were originally held. It first explains how tangible assets subject to proprietary interests may be lost through physical or deemed destruction, as a result of goods becoming a fixture on land, or an accession or a product resulting from a manufacture. It then considers whether the law allows any proprietary protection to a party who loses his/her proprietary interest, with a particular focus on the principle of nemo dat quod non habet (no one can pass a greater interest in property than they have) and the notion of a disposition, including disposition in circumstances triggering possession-based defences. The chapter concludes with a discussion of loss of a proprietary interest through disposition by a third party.

Resumen
This volume is the first to provide a comprehensive cross-linguistic overview of an understudied typological phenomenon, the clause-level argument-like behaviour of internal possessors. In some languages, adnominal possessors—or a subset thereof—figure more prominently than expected in the phrase-external syntax, by controlling predicate agreement and/or acting as a switch-reference pivot in same-subject relations. There is no independent evidence that such possessors are external to the possessive phrase or that they assume head status within it. This creates a puzzle for virtually all syntactic theories, as it is generally believed that agreement and switch-reference target phrasal heads rather than dependents. Following an introduction to the typology of the phenomenon and an overview of possible syntactic analyses, chapters in the volume offer more focussed case studies from a wide range of languages spoken in the Americas, Eurasia, South Asia, and Australia. The contributions are largely based on novel data collected by the authors and present thorough discussions of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of prominent internal possessors in the relevant languages. The volume will be of interest to researchers and students from graduate level upwards in the fields of comparative linguistics, syntax, typology, and semantics.

Farrugia, David. Youth, Work and the Post-Fordist Self. Policy Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529210057.001.0001.

Resumen
Youth, Work and the Post-Fordist Self represents a paradigm shift in contemporary understandings of youth and work: from the study of youth transitions to the formation of young people as workers. With this focus, the book addresses transformations in the status of young people as economic actors. Despite high levels of youth unemployment, young people are increasingly encouraged to view work as a realm of meaning and self-actualisation, and are required to invest more and more in their identities as workers. In this, young people are evocative of broader shifts in labour force formation processes, which now go beyond the possession of skills or educational capital to encompass aspects of the working self that were previously considered ‘unproductive’, such as a worker’s relational style and mode of self-expression. The book draws on a large qualitative data-set in which young people articulate the meaning of work in their own words, describe their experiences of employment, and articulate their plans and aspirations for the role that work will play in their own lives. More than a set of employment conditions to move through, this book explores work as a realm in which young people’s selves and identities are produced in line with post-Fordist social and economic changes, which make work into an increasingly all-encompassing arena for the production of youth itself. In this sense, the book represents a new research agenda in studies of youth and work, situating youth as critical to the dynamics of labour and value in contemporary capitalism.
