Resumen
Objective: The objective of this study was to measure and assess the implant education received by graduates from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. This study measured the self-reported competency levels of dental practitioners with regards to providing and maintaining dental implants as treatment modalities to their patients. The study assessed dental graduates’ willingness to practice and perform dental implant procedures, including both surgical and prosthetic treatments. Additionally, the study identifies challenges that face practicing dentists treating patients with dental implants and identifies the preferred way practitioners seek future training after completing dental school. Methods: A 36-item electronic survey was created and distributed to 737 dentists who graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dentists’ demographics, practice characteristics, and detailed self-reported competency in implant dentistry were collected. Statistical analysis of the responses consisted of descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis, and nonparametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Spearman’s rank correlation test along with a chi-square test were used for detecting the differences, correlations and associations under different conditions. Results: 154 dentists completed the survey (21% response rate), while only 143 subjects who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included for the statistical analysis. The survey consisted mostly of males (56.6%). The mean age of respondents was 34.2 years old with a mean practice time of 6.2 years. Of the responding dentists, 21.7% completed a postgraduate training program and 51% of the respondents were in group practice. 66% of the respondents practice in the Midwest region of the US and 71.3% of the respondents took continuing educational courses in implant dentistry and the mean cumulative hours of CE courses in implant dentistry was 33.8 hours. The mean average of implant restorations provided per year was 11.7 and the mean average of implant placements per year was 19.6. There was a significant correlation between cumulative hours of Continuing Education courses and number of implant units on average placed or restored. 64.3% of the dentists are not satisfied with the implant education given at the dental student level. 95.8% of the dentists reported that dental school training is not adequate to surgically place dental implants in their practice. Only 32.4% reported that dental school training was not adequate to restore dental implants in their practice. The preferred way to receive additional training about dental implants is short-term CE courses and workshop courses conducted by implant companies. 23.6% of the dentists reported they are competent at surgically placing dental implants in their practice. 79.1% reported they are competent at restoring dental implants in the dental office. Only 28.4% reported that they feel dental implants are more difficult than other dental treatments. Conclusions: Graduate dentists from the University of Iowa are not expected to be competent in all components of implant dentistry without further postgraduate training. Respondents stated that their dental school training in surgical placement of implants was inadequate. To build upon their dental school training, the two main preferred education pathways as reported by respondents were short-term continuing education courses and workshops courses conducted by implant companies. Within the parameters of this study, we can conclude the following: 1.Age, GPA, number of CE hours in dental implant therapy, specialty status, and time since graduation did not influence undergraduate education satisfaction in dental implant therapy. 2.There is a positive correlation between the number of CE course hours and the number of implant units restored or placed by general dentists. 3.Male dentists, those who practice in group practice settings, and those who have graduated six or more years ago reported a greater number of CE course hours in dental implant therapy. 4.Those who graduated with GPAs less than or equal to 3.4, general dentists, and those who enrolled in a high number of CE courses were more confident in restoring dental implants. 5.Those who graduated with a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5, specialist dentists, and those who enrolled in a high number of CE courses were more confident in surgically placing dental implants. 6.Males, general dentists, those who practice in a group practice setting, and those who graduated six years or more ago restored more implants on average per year. 7.Males, specialist dentists, those who practice outside the Midwest US, and those who graduated six years or more ago surgically place more implants on average per year.

Resumen
The rapid expansion of dental service organizations (DSOs) continues to disrupt the traditional dental practice model and there was a 12.2% increase in DSOs between 2015 and 2016. Some solo and small group dental practice owners lack strategies to adapt their businesses to be successful in newly competitive markets including DSOs. Grounded in systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative multicase study was to explore strategies dental practice owners use to adapt their businesses to be successful in newly competitive markets. The participants included 3 solo and 2 small group dental practice owners in central Kentucky who demonstrated success in developing and leveraging strategies to be successful in newly competitive markets. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and company documents. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The 3 major themes identified were patient care and experience, patient and community relationships, and adaptation and innovation. The application of effective strategies identified in this study may have implications for positive social change by enabling dental practitioners to continue to provide access to outstanding dental care in the communities they serve. A second implication for positive social change is the potential economic benefits to the community through employing dentists and clinical staff, providing commerce to suppliers and business service providers, and tax contributions to the city, state, and U.S. federal government.

Fugill, Martin. "Simulation and student transition in restorative dentistry". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5724/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Simulation in the shape of the “phantom head” is an essential part of every dental training programme. It is used to provide the student with practice before he/she is allowed to carry out restorative dental procedures on patients. In theory, this practice promotes patient safety. However, the learning process lacks clarity, and we do not understand fully how well learned skills transfer to clinical activity. This study asks whether in fact the pre-clinical course is a reliable guarantor of patient safety. It does so by examining four facets of the simulation process: purpose, learning, fidelity and transition, using a mixture of research methods, including comparison of pre-clinical and clinical assessment grades, focus groups with students, one-to-one interviews with their teachers and a questionnaire. The results of these investigations indicate a complex inter-relationship between purpose, learning, fidelity and transition. They also suggest that success in simulated restorative dentistry is a poor predictor of clinical ability, a limitation that needs careful consideration in the light of patient safety. The study recommends changes to increase the complexity and authenticity of the pre-clinical course, and suggests that the student transition needs detailed management, perhaps through a blend of pre-clinical and clinical activity.

Resumen
Purpose: To assess the impact of dental Medicaid reform in Virginia on dental practice settings (private practice, corporate practice and safety net clinics). Methods: This retrospective cohort study of 16.2 million dental claims is from the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services, which included claims for providers participating in Virginia’s Medicaid program during a 10-year period (2002-2012). The dividing date for the reform was July 1, 2005. The outcome measure was mean claims per participating provider. A Poisson regression model was used to predict the mean number of claims per provider with the following predictors: reform period, practice setting, provider specialty, practice location. Results: The mean number of claims after program reform was significantly higher depending on practice setting and provider specialty, but not practice location. Conclusion: Medicaid reform has resulted in a significant increase in the number of dental claims, providers, and practice settings in Virginia.

Resumen
Oral Biology
M.S.
Practicing orthodontists frequently state that the most difficult aspect of their career is running the practice and managing the staff members. To combat this challenge, some residency programs, including Temple's, offer practice management courses. Residents commonly learn practice management skills from male orthodontists, as they typically make up the majority of the orthodontic faculty. Due to the innate personality and interpersonal relationship differences between females and males, what a male orthodontist teaches may not be true, or effective, for the female orthodontist. The aim of this pilot study was to determine how practice management styles lead to personal and professional success. With the aid of qualitative research protocol, this study assessed: 1. practice management skills and deficiencies exhibited by male and female orthodontists, 2. practice management challenges male and female orthodontists face. The study explored the management styles of male and female orthodontists. The goal of the study was to define if male and female orthodontists exhibit different practice management strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and styles. Based on the study results, the following conclusions have been drawn: 1. Several factors play a role in the orthodontist's personal success: the most important factors being family and happy staff members. 2. Male orthodontists report that their career has a negative effect on their families due to job stresses. In contrast, female orthodontists view their career as having a positive effect on their families due to increased flexibility and reduced burden on their husbands. 3. Male orthodontists have well-defined business goals and aggressively pursue their goals, whereas, female orthodontists are content with their current success and less driven to achieve more. 4. All orthodontists believe their staff members are happy; female orthodontists have longer standing staff members and a more open relationship with their employees. 5. Male orthodontists utilize nearly every orthodontic technology. Interestingly, newer technologies are all but absent from female owned orthodontic offices.

Burke, Brandon. "Perception of soft tissue laser use in orthodontic practice: a survey of orthodontists, periodontists, and general dentists". VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2199.

Texto completo
Resumen
Recently, soft tissue lasers have been introduced into orthodontic practice to perform procedures that were traditionally referred to other dental professionals. The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes of orthodontists, periodontists, and general dentists regarding the use of soft tissue lasers by orthodontists. The ultimate goal was to facilitate communication among dental professionals and improve the care of orthodontic patients requiring management of soft tissues. A survey was developed to evaluate and compare the current opinions of orthodontists (n=330), periodontists (n=171), and general dentists (n=77) regarding orthodontists’ use of soft tissue lasers. When compared to orthodontists and general dentists, a lower percentage of periodontists indicated that soft tissue laser use by orthodontists was appropriate (P = 0.001). Also, for each of the 8 specific soft tissue laser procedures investigated, periodontists reported a significantly lower level (P = 0.001) of appropriateness than did orthodontists and general dentists.

Cairns, Alison M. "Introduction and evaluation of a peer observation of teaching scheme to develop the teaching practice of chair-side clinical dentistry tutors". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/38918/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Glasgow Dental School (GDS) offers a varied learning environment for well-motivated, high-achieving students. These students, along with institutional, professional and public stakeholders, demand high quality, efficient, effective and modern teaching practices. A new undergraduate curriculum was introduced at GDS; a more authentic learning experience was to be delivered with a move away from traditional teaching based solely within the dental hospital. Outreach teaching facilities were introduced and a cohort of NHS clinical tutors joined academic staff. Both new and old staff were required to develop their teaching skills. Some tutors expressed distress at the lack of availability of training to enhance teaching skills, and implementation of a Peer Observation of Teaching Scheme (POT) was considered as a way to address this issue. POT focuses on providing opportunities for staff to improve their teaching skills. It can be conducted successfully with inexperienced teaching staff and limited resources. It can help identify and eliminate poor teaching practice while enabling participants to develop their skills, self-identity and group identity as teachers. POT, in this study, is a reciprocal process whereby one peer observes another teaching and provides supportive and constructive feedback. Its underlying rationale is to encourage professional development in teaching and learning through critical reflection, by both the observer and the observed. In this thesis, I outline the implementation of the POT scheme across clinical sites at GDS. The study involved multiple stakeholders and therefore required approval, accommodation and support across six geographically diverse Scottish health board areas. The process and outcomes from the evaluation of the POT scheme are presented. The current body of published research offers little in relation to POT for the development of teaching chair-side clinical dentistry, a distinct area where students carry out multiple invasive procedures on patients during each teaching session. Appraisal of the scheme and its impact was conducted using evaluation methodology underpinned by constructivist epistemology. Ethical approval was sought and granted. Results describe motivations to teach and evaluation of the POT process in relation to its authenticity, acceptability and practicality. Analysis of who is truly considered a ‘peer’ as well as aspects of trust, honesty and respect are presented along with the perceived issues for colleagues sharing critical feedback. Impact of the POT scheme is explored in terms of teaching, reflection, increased self-awareness, and lessons learned about personal teaching practice. There is a strong focus on the role of POT for quality enhancement. Key issues highlighted by the findings include; the notable differences between participants from a range of academic backgrounds; study limitations; and feasible alternatives for the development of teaching staff. The POT scheme was successfully implemented and analysed. It was an authentic method for encouraging reflection and development of teaching practice. Recommendations for further progress are outlined. These include whether POT should be mandatory; how to facilitate wider group discussion; systems for implementation of shared good practice; and increasing access to teaching qualifications. Further research is required to directly measure the impact of POT on student learning and look at how the scheme has impacted on development of the wider community of practice.

Resumen

"Healthcare organizations rely heavily on communications to deliver services and certify quality treatment outcomes. Specifically, communication and communication processes are critical determinants in whether a dental practice succeeds or fails. There has been a substantial amount of research on communication and its influence on patient satisfaction, employee morale, and work productivity within various organizations. However, limited existing qualitative research examines communication processes and their impact on health institutions. This research study explored the communication process and its influence on employee work performance within a dental practice. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to obtain descriptive, information-rich responses from a purposeful sample of 10 participants regarding their perception of the communication process. Utilizing an embedded, exploratory, case study research design, descriptions and experiences from leaders and employees revealed four major gaps within the organization's communication process. Consequently, six themes emerged that identified the four intricacies of an effective communication process within a private dental practice. The following complexities, lack of comprehension, lack of employee awareness, lack of precision and clarification of instruction, and inconsistent exchange of information, are crucial facets of the communication process. From the perspective of study participants, improvement in these areas would foster employee engagement, produce desirable outcomes, and enhance employee work performance"

Larkin, Valerie. "An exploration of midwives' experiences and practice in relation to the assessment of maternal postnatal genital tract health". Thesis, Northumbria University, 2012. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/10257/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Over the past 15 years the focus of postnatal care has changed. Contemporary professional guidance no longer directs midwives to undertake specific assessment tasks in relation to women’s genital tract, but advocates an holistic and individualised approach. However more recently some concern has been expressed within the professional literature that women’s physical needs may be overlooked. It is unclear how midwives decide upon their approach to maternal genital tract assessment, the involvement of women in this process, what assessment methods they use and the factors that influence this clinical reasoning process. A constructionist grounded theory methodology was employed to guide the research design and processes, including analysis of the data, the use of theoretical sampling to evolve the emerging research categories and the construction of a grounded theory. Ethical approval was gained from the regional research ethics committee and the research and development committee at the data collection site. Sampling was purposeful and data was collected using narrative style in depth interviews involving fourteen midwives and observations of fifteen postnatal assessments involving five midwives and fifteen postnatal women. Three themes were identified from the data and form the framework of the constructed grounded theory; they are Methods, Motivators and Modifiers. Within each theme are a number of categories and focused codes. The Methods theme summarises a range of assessment methods used by the midwives, including risk assessment, questioning and clinical observations. The Motivators theme incorporates factors which motivated how, when and why the midwives undertook genital tract assessment and includes verification, personal preferences and sensitive care. The Modifiers theme consists of factors and contexts, which facilitated or inhibited the midwives’ ability to negotiate an appropriate approach to assessment and includes the categories therapeutic relationship, care in context and evolving midwifery knowledge. The findings of this study suggest that the midwives are aware of a range of assessment methods, however there was less articulation or demonstration of methods pertaining to assessment of uterine health. The motivating and modifying factors highlight midwife, woman and contextual factors, which may enhance and inhibit the midwives clinical reasoning process. The complexity of contemporary midwifery practice is illuminated as these factors conflict and create practice tensions and contradictions for the midwives. There was limited evidence that the midwives involved women in deciding the approach to genital tract assessment. Implications include the need to ensure midwives have the knowledge regarding uterine health and the skills and affective abilities to engage women in health assessments and practice effectively within the complexity of contemporary practice.

Resumen
The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the uptake of new mobile technologies and how they are utilized by staff and students in dental education. A questionnaire was distributed to students at the University of Birmingham, Dental School. Follow up one-to-one interviews were conducted. Tutors were interviewed to understand their attitude and understanding towards the use of electronic/mobile technologies. It is apparent that smartphones are more convenient for students to learn and as a resource to advice patients on their clinic. They are using them on the go in preference to any other device and use the support of mobile tools such as phone apps. Emails are used by students for more formal messages and Instant Messaging and social networking sites are used for shorter messages. Students thought that changes were necessary in the way that they communicate and research their studies. There is an all-embracing use, by both tutors and students of mobile learning tools. Learners wish to embed tools such as Instant Messaging in their learning areas but not without the approval of their respected tutors. Institutions should be aware of such changes and look to adapt their learning practices to mobile technologies.

Resumen
The explosion of health information accessible to consumers through multimedia has supported the merit and value of evidence-based practice (EBP). Both informed interest from patients and medico-legal considerations of patient care and safety have also contributed to an increased importance of EBP for health practitioners. In light of this, the Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) University of Sydney (Australia) faced challenge and pressure to cope with the high-level skills required by a competent oral health practitioner in the current health care environment. A redesigned EBP curriculum aimed to break through the theoretical ‘boundary’, cultivate and develop students in using scientific evidence to support clinical decision-making. Scenario-based tutorials, clinical application and progressive assessment strategies characterised this curriculum. Objectives: To identify and determine to what extent strategies to enhance teaching, student application of EBP; and to evaluate EBP impact on oral health graduates’ clinical practice. Methods: Quantitative data was collected using questionnaires, and followed by qualitative inquiry using focus groups and individual interviews to capture students’ experience in EBP from the curriculum and its impact on the profession. Qualitative responses were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Triangulation was used to cross-validate and confirm findings to provide a broader understanding of the subject. Results: Over 90% of students reported a positive EBP experience though only over 50% students found searching evidence and accessing full text an achievable task. Graduates reported they felt confident and were empowered by EBP in making clinical decisions. Challenges included limited online resources for literature search, lack of evidence in some aspects of dentistry, and gaining full-text access. Conclusion: The redesigned EBP curriculum has made an overall positive impact on oral health graduates’ clinical practice. This study can serve as a pathfinder to introduce and implement EBP in other health care educational institutions and support translational science by bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, which can potentially improve patient outcomes from the patient-oriented level to the population-based level.

Taiwo, Olaniyi O. "Roles of Community Pharmacists in Improving Oral Health Awareness in Plateau State, Northern Nigeria". ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3729.

Texto completo
Resumen
There is poor oral health awareness in Nigeria. This is mainly attributed to limited access to correct information on oral health as well as a lack of oral health care providers. The impact of the poor oral health awareness is worse in Northern Nigeria due to the uneven distribution of oral health care workers and training facilities. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe the roles of community pharmacists (CPs) in Plateau State, Nigeria as sources of oral health information. Theoretical framework for this study was the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Background knowledge and practices of oral health care by CPs were assessed as related to their demographic characteristics. A 1 sample t-test was used to assess CPs' knowledge of oral health. A binary logistic regression model was conducted to evaluate if some demographic variables could predict Plateau State CPs' interest in becoming more involved in provision of services on oral health problems. According to the study findings, the CPs had a good disposition towards engaging in oral health prevention services by providing some oral health services to patients with oral health problems. In addition, 94.7% of the CPs were willing to advance the cause of oral health care. The disposition of CPs towards oral health could serve as a platform to help propagate oral health care and awareness in their communities. Engaging the CPs might help reduce oral health disparities by increasing oral health awareness, improving oral health-seeking behavior and oral hygiene practices, and improving quality of life via cost effective delivery of pharmacy-based oral health care services.

Kim, MyungJoo. "Consumers' choice of dentist: how and why people choose dental school faculty as their oral care provider". Thesis, University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1000.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study is aimed to better understand how and why people choose dental school faculty as their oral healthcare provider. Increasing financial constrains in the U.S. dental schools has led dental schools to find an alternative funding sources and revenues from dental school faculty practice can be one of them. To effectively promote faculty practice, it is necessary to understand how and why people choose dental school faculty as their oral care provider. In addition, it is important to differentiate characteristics of comprehensive care patients and limited care patients since dental school faculty practices have a higher proportion of specialists. A survey of 1150 dental school faculty practice patients who recently chose their dentist was conducted and 221 responded. Information sources highly used and rated included other dentist, friends, family, clinic website, the Internet, and the insurance directory. Dentist related attributes that were perceived important included quality of care, professional competence of dentist, and explanation of treatment/you participate in the treatment decision. Dental practice related attributes that were perceived important included ability to get appointments at convenient times, reasonable waiting time to get appointments, and attitude/helpfulness of staff. Among the respondents, 121 pursued a comprehensive care and 93 pursued a limited care. The two groups differed in terms of demographics, other characteristics, and dentist selection. The comprehensive care patients were younger, highly educated, related to healthcare related profession, and to have private dental insurance (p<0.001). The comprehensive care patients were more likely to use and highly rate information sources such as clinic website, the Internet, and the insurance directory (p<0.001). They put more value on attributes such as the dentist is in my insurance network and convenient physical location (p<0.001). This study has shown that traditionally popular (family, friends) and newly emerging information sources (the Internet, clinic website, and insurance directory) were used and perceived important by dental school faculty practice patients. A dental school or dentist can use this study's findings to promote their practice to select appropriate communication channels and focus on attributes that dental consumers value the most. It is also important to apply different strategies to different consumer groups.

Young, Mairi Anne. "Optimising the role of the dental health support worker in Childsmile Practice : a comparative Realist approach". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8111/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Childsmile, the national oral health improvement programme for children in Scotland, aims to reduce oral health inequalities and improve access to dental services. Childsmile is delivered, in part, by a new category of lay or community-based worker known as a Dental Health Support Worker (DHSW) who supports families to improve oral health behaviours and attend a dental practice. Findings from Childsmile’s national process evaluation indicated there was widespread variation in delivery of the DHSW role and additional research was required to further understand and develop programme theory for the DHSW role; and clarify areas of variation which were adaptive and which were a risk to the programme meeting its desired objectives. Aims: The overarching aim was to gain further understanding of which factors and variants (contextual and those associated with programme delivery) impact on effectiveness of the DHSW role within Childsmile Practice. This research is a component study of the national Childsmile evaluation strategy. Findings will be fed back to the Childsmile programme to optimise delivery of the role and to enable future evaluation of the role’s impact. Methods: Learning and evidence generation was triangulated from two phases of research, comprising three component studies. Phase 1 comprised the sensitising study and comparative case studies: both provided learning from within Childsmile. The sensitising study was designed as a scoping exercise using qualitative data collection methods. The aim was to establish existing programme theory and explicate delivery of the DHSW role, while uncovering deviation (from programme theory) and variation within and between NHS boards. Findings were used to design three comparative case studies, comprising one DHSW and key stakeholders involved in delivery of the role from three NHS boards. The comparative case studies employed qualitative data collection methods; and were designed to address the overarching aim, and explore the casual links between context, delivery, and outcomes in delivery of the role using Realist-inspired analysis. Phase 2 comprised a Realist Review to provide learning from out with Childsmile. The aim was to gain an understanding of which components of child health interventions, delivered by lay health workers to parents, could influence ‘child health parenting behaviours’. Findings and Conclusions: Findings indicated that in terms of motivational readiness to engage with positive oral health parenting behaviours (POHPBs) there were three types of families referred to the DHSW for support: low, moderate, and high-risk. It was established that to address programme aims DHSWs ought to support moderate-high risk families, yet DHSWs only had capacity to support low-moderate risk families. Findings demonstrated that the Public Health Nurses/Health Visitors were best placed to triage families according to their needs and motivational readiness. The peer-ness of the DHSW role was found to positively influence parental engagement with the programme and facilitate person-centred support. However, an embedded ‘sweetie culture’ and health damaging environments were found to negatively impact on parents’ self-efficacy and perceived locus of control to engage with POHPBs. Learning indicated that: delivery over a prolonged period of time; incorporation of the programme into the Early Years Pathway and GIRFEC policy; and recent changes to the Children and Young Person (Scotland) Act (2014), served to embed Childsmile within the NHS boards and facilitated stakeholder buy-in, which positively impacted on delivery of the role. From the learning derived within and out with Childsmile the recommendations for the DHSW role included: (1) DHSW support should move away from a primarily information provision and facilitation of families into dental practice role, and incorporate socio-emotional and person-centred support; (2) The DHSW role should be redefined to support moderate-high risk families; and interpretation and application of referral criteria should be addressed to ensure continuity with who is referred for support; and (3) Programme theory for the DHSW role should be refined and future evaluative effort should concentrate on assessing impact.

Abstract: The practice of dentistry in Brazil is regulated by the law 5.081/66 which has the following wording: "dentists are competent to make forensic dental expertise in civil, criminal, labor and administrative areas". Considering the increase of situations that requiJ dental expertise, such as a deal involving professional exercise and the need of maxillofacial injuries assessment, it is due to the tendency of Dentistry experts demand increase. To attend this reality and aiming to standardize data collection and uniform expert reports, making report generation safer and more agile, this study proposed the creation of a software that grouped key data for conducting a dental expertise in civil proceedings. The software was developed by Cleber Scoralick Júnior, a qualified professional using Visual Basic for Applications programming language. A software evaluation was realized with a demonstration for 20 dental expertise qualified dentists which completed a questionnaire with questions grading from O to 10. lt was obtained from each participant a Term of Free and lnformed Consent. The software was named Investigation and for it to operate it is necessary Microsoft Office 2000 or greater installed on your computer and at least 300 inegabytes of free hard disk space. lt also can operate from removable media (pen drives). ln data protection subject assessment, the average score was equal to 8.65 (standard deviation of 1.3869) with a confidence interval of 95% from average. ln data available and organizational coherence subject, 90% of the participants assigned grades greater than or equal to 8. lt was found that at least 95% of participants believed that the software lnvestigation has potential to make dental expert process more agile, more practical and standardized. Thus, we concluded that the software is able to standardize dental expert procedure, while increasing the quality and productivity of dentists working on civil expertise. Nevertheless, it is necessary to perform validation of this tool in future researches.

Resumen
The proposed dually licensed advanced dental therapy program, a graduate level curriculum created by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) encompassing both dental hygiene and basic restorative procedures, creates an innovative career path in dental hygiene and increases the standing of the dental hygienist from an auxiliary role to an independent midlevel dental practitioner. Data were gathered via an online anonymous survey tool from Massachusetts registered dental hygienists to assess support of this proposed curriculum by practicing hygienists. Eighty-seven percent of survey respondents are in agreement that the scope of dental hygiene responsibilities should increase with level of education, and that the inclusion of limited restorative procedures should generate independent midlevel dental practitioner status.

The debate on university education runs through the profile of professionals being trained in universities and their future in the market, especially in public service. The processes of deep and intrinsic transformation of human resources are complex and involve changes that require a certain time to be established. The aim of this study was to analyze the principles that guide the training of professional educational in Dentistry connected to the practice in public service. The investigation was focused on a quantitative and qualitative approach, collecting relevant information to the theoretical and practical understanding of the subject studied. Questionnaires were conducted with sixteen dentists working in primary health system of the eight municipalities which are part of Baixada Santista and Costa da Mata Atlântica. Those questionnaires resulted in driving pillars of the semi-structured interviews applied to eight dentists who had up to five years of graduation. After collecting data, analysis was preceded by three central themes: the practice, training, proposals and suggestions. The survey showed the dentists inserted in the current health system learn with the daily practice, emphasizing the Permanent Education. The training with technical emphasis is confronted with the reality and the guidelines of national health policy, reassuring the necessity of curriculum revision based on the guidelines and reinforcing the importance of a closer relation with the public health service as a practice and training field, so that professionals can contribute effectively to the qualification of the National Health System through a purposive and contextual analysis.

Resumen
This qualitative case study explored faculty perceptions regarding best practices and uses of assessment in a dental hygiene program at a small northwestern college. It was discovered that faculty in the program were assessing students in their clinical courses using widely varied methods, designs, and scoring tools. Faculty neither calibrated processes nor communicated about this problem. In addition, a review of the assessments in this local setting indicated a significant gap in the current guidelines for best practices in clinical assessment procedures. Knowles' adult learning theory served as the foundation for this study. Research questions were designed to obtain clinical faculty's perceptions of their knowledge of best practices in assessment, assessment design, methods including scoring tools, and how faculty could work collaboratively to implement clearly and consistently designed best-practice assessments in their clinical courses. Interviews and reviews of assessment documents were conducted with a purposeful sample of 8 faculty participants. Data were coded and analyzed for common themes. Results indicated that instructors did not collaborate and had little knowledge of assessment criteria based on best practices, administration, and scoring procedures. At the request of the dean, a position paper was created as a project. The paper outlined strategies for designing clinical skills assessments with criteria that is consistent, clear, and based on best practices. Also included were procedures for ongoing faculty professional development and collaboration, insuring that faculty are calibrated and that assessments are valid and reliable. The results of this study can promote positive social change as faculty in this program will be increasingly confident in assessment practices, and graduates will consistently provide greater quality patient and community care.

Resumen
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) comprise a significant portion of the U.S. primary care workforce and play an essential role in patients' health awareness, prevention strategies, disease management, and in providing appropriate provider referrals. Nurse Practitioners receive education on the oral-systemic connection, yet there have been limited studies on the clinical practice of NPs assessing the oral cavity to evaluate the condition of the teeth and the oral tissues. The purpose of this study was to explore the nurse practitioners’ knowledge and practice habits of assessing the oral cavity for diseases or abnormalities in the mouth that can, in turn, affect overall health. A total of 66 NPs were included in the study, primarily female (91%) with master’s degrees (77%). While knowledge and education were not significantly associated, this research found significant associations between confidence and assessments, less than one-third (30.3%) were confident in their knowledge and ability to evaluate oral abnormalities.

Resumen
Dental schools are faced with the challenge of incorporating varied instructional methodologies into their curriculum. Various dental schools distinguish different modules in their program under preclinical and clinical disciplines with minimal connections between the two. This study investigated students' perceptions of their curriculum and, more specifically, compare and contrast dental students' perceptions of learning during the first or freshman years, the second or junior years, and the third years as seniors in 2005, 2006, and 2007. It contrasts the results from students' perceptions and students' actual learning to establish correlations between these two phenomena. Various standard assessments were used. Students' understanding of the use of dental materials including base, liner, and cement were measured as predicting factors to substantiate the accuracy of the students' perceptions. A questionnaire was used to elicit a total of 853 responses over the three consecutive years. Pearson correlations were applied to analyze the data. The main finding was a positive correlation between the accuracy of students perceptions of learning and their participation in clinical practice; whereas no correlation was confirmed with regard to the accuracy of students' perceptions of learning when students had only or primarily participated in preclinical courses. The results suggest that advanced students' perceptions and knowledge can be considered by faculty when making decisions regarding reform of their dental curriculum

Wong, Tracy Jean. "Assessment and evaluation practices in a pediatric dentistry clinical education setting". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42778.

Resumen
In clinical teaching and learning settings, there is a need for assessment and evaluation practices to be focused on students' overall performance during patient care, not just technical skills in Dentistry. Competency-based education is intended to provide the framework for dental education at The University of British Columbia (UBC) in terms of curriculum content and assessment of student learning outcomes. Clinical instruction in disciplines such as Pediatric Dentistry depends on clinical practitioner-instructors who have potential to make important contributions to student development. Although they bring strengths as disciplinary experts immersed in the realities of dental practice, most are not well versed in research-based instructional strategies to engage students in critical thinking and self-directed learning for the rigours of independent practice. In a qualitative study, data were collected by the author (resident Program Coordinator of the UBC Children's Dental Program) through interviews, observation in teaching clinics, and review of documentation to inform the scope and nature of assessment and evaluation practices in the clinical educational settings of Pediatric Dentistry at UBC. Interview data also provided reflections about how clinical practitioner-instructors understand their practice. Data collected were analyzed using principles of grounded theory and merged into themes drawn from the conceptual framework of Hubball and Burt (2004) as well as the use of the UBC Faculty of Dentistry patient care performance criteria and standards for student learning. Assessment and evaluation practices in clinical settings typically ranged from predominantly directive methods (e.g. traditional teacher-driven and skills-based) that clinical practitioner-instructors experienced themselves as students, to occasional learning-centred methods (e.g. instructor questioning, self-analysis, and reflection) supported by current literature. While clinical practitioner-instructors recognized the importance of student confidence and safety of patient care, most were unfamiliar with authentic methods of assessment and evaluation for competency-based dental education. Further, there was little reflection or collaboration within the community of practitioners about the effectiveness of assessment methods. These results and a research-informed approach will guide planning of faculty development initiatives (e.g., learning communities focused on learning-centred assessment and evaluation strategies) for clinical practitioner-instructors.

Risk assessment is an essential part of dental practice today. Each patient should be assessed and stratified into a well defined group according to risk. This risk assessment should then affect the choice of prevention and treatment, and intervals for recalls and appropriate level of care. Today, in Swedish dental healthcare, different guidelines are being used as support in the assessment of a patient’s oral health. The aim of this study was to find out, compare and describe the most frequent used guidelines/systems for risk assessment of oral health in Sweden today. A second aim was to examine whether these systems are evidence-based and evaluated, and to identify existing knowledge about evidence-based supporting systems for risk assessment of oral health. A systematic review was made where articles published more than 10 years ago and papers which didn’t involve risk assessment of the whole patient were excluded. The Public Dental Service and Praktikertjänst were contacted and enquired about which systems if any were in use. For more in depth information on these systems, persons with key knowledge were interviewed. The information received was then analyzed in relation to the literature review. The results show that the system most frequently used in the Public Dental Service today is Beslutsstöd R2. Other computerbased systems are Datorstödd riskgruppering Effica and DentiGroup. In Praktikertjänst a system is available for all users of Opus Dental practice management system. Our conclusion is that the scientific evidence, regarding evidence-based and evaluation of support / guidelines are inadequate.

Resumen
Dental Caries is still considered one of the most prevalent chronic diseases that affect children in the US. Access to oral care problems could be due to the limited availability of services or unwillingness of people to seek services. As a proposed solution to those challenges, Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART) was developed in the 1980s as an affordable, patient friendly caries management procedure that does not need extensive operator training or special skills. ART was originally developed to be conducted in field settings; however, after initial evidence of effectiveness, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Dental Federation (FDI) promoted the use of ART in modern clinical settings worldwide. In the US, the practice of ART is not believed to be widely used. This may be a result of little attention given to (ART) in dental education and advanced training. This dissertation is comprised of three separate studies that investigated the extent and the factors related to the didactic and clinical instruction on ART in US pre- and post-doctoral pediatric dentistry programs and the factors related to the willingness of pediatric dentists to use ART with their child patients. survey post-doctoral pediatric dentistry program directors and pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry program directors. In study III a different instrument was used to survey pediatric dentists in the US. The survey instruments were tested for content and face validity by cognitive analysis interviews and pilot testing. Using web-based survey methodology, two questionnaires were sent out in May 2010 to investigate self-reported use of ART in educational training institutes (study I and II) and in April 2011, a third questionnaire was sent to a random national sample of pediatric dentists (study III). Using a conjoint design, the third questionnaire asked pediatric dentists to rate their willingness to use ART for 9 patients' scenarios. Eighty eight percent of Pediatric Dentistry Residency programs and 66 % of pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry programs in the US provided clinical training on ART; however only 30% of post-doctoral programs and 14 % of pre-doctoral programs used ART "Very Often/ Often" as a caries management technique for their pediatric patients. Pediatric Dentistry residency programs and pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry programs used ART mainly in primary, anterior, single surface cavities and as an interim treatment. Attitudes toward ART alone and after controlling for other variables explained 35% of the level of training on ART in post- doctoral program and 23% in pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry programs. For study III, conjoint analysis showed that being very young and/or uncooperative were the most important reasons practitioners reported a higher likelihood of using ART. Although insurance coverage was the least important factor overall, not having any insurance was identified as an additional important factor in decisions to use ART. Collectively, our results suggest that that the use of ART is not widespread in the US. In addition, ART is viewed by some as a sub optimum treatment and needs to be modified to conform to the US standards of care. On the other hand, educators and pediatric dentists who had positive views of ART thought it could be a valuable treatment for very young, uncooperative children and children with no insurance.

Resumen
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Removable Prosthetic Dentistry (PRO400) is a fourth year module of the undergraduate dentistry programme which consists of a large clinical component. After reviewing relevant literature and conducting module evaluations, clinical tests were introduced and implemented in 2008 as an additional clinical assessment method. The intention of introducing the clinical tests was an attempt to ensure that students were assessed fairly, that their theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply it clinically were properly assessed, and to provide feedback on their clinical performance. The purpose of this concurrent mixed methods study was to compare the relationship between the students‟ performance in the clinical tests and daily clinical grades with their theoretical performance in the PRO400 module. The second part of the study explored the academic staff s‟ perceptions of the clinical test as clinical assessment tool in the PRO400 module. The case study design enabled the researcher to explore the question at hand in considerable depth. The mixed methods approach was useful to capture the best of both the qualitative and quantitative approaches. For the quantitative data-collection, record reviews of the results of fourth-year dental students‟ who completed the PRO400 module at the end of 2007 were used, and included 110 students. For the qualitative component three full-time lecturers within the Prosthetic department were interviewed. The clinical test marks and clinical session marks of all the students (n=109) in PRO400 were compared to their theory mark of that year. The tests marks were entered into a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel and the data analysis was done with the assistance of a statistician. The analytical abstraction method was used to assist with the qualitative data analysis; first the basic level of analysis was done in the narrative form, followed by second higher level of data analysis. The basic and higher levels of analysis were discussed under the following themes: clinical tests, student performances, alignment of theory and clinical assessment and personal influence on supervisors‟ assessment practices and attitude. Role-taking and the supervisors‟ perceptions and concerns regarding the students were explored as emergent themes. The quantitative findings were displayed using tables and graphs. Forty five students. clinical marks were 10% higher than their theory mark, while only 8 students. theory marks were 10% higher than their clinical test mark. There appeared to be hardly any relationship between the students. clinical daily grade assessment marks and their theory marks. The average theory mark was 47%, the average clinical test marks were 55% and the average daily clinical grade was 63%. Integration of the data obtained from the different data collection methods was done at the level of data interpretation. The clinical test as an assessment tool is well accepted by the supervisors and they agreed that it is more reliable and accurate than the clinical daily grade assessment method. The quantitative findings relate well to other reported studies that concluded that the daily grade was poorly correlated with the competency exams (a similar phenomenon in the clinical test of the PRO400 module). From the findings of this study it appeared that there is a better correlation of the clinical test mark and the theory mark, than clinical daily mark and the theory mark. This finding related well with the lecturers. views that the clinical tests were more reliable as a clinical assessment tool than the daily clinical mark.

The people living on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape have been practicing dental modification for a number of years. A systematic survey of eight adjoining areas in the Northern suburbs was done to investigate the prevalence, motivation and possible historical time depth of this practice. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire. A total of 2167 individuals participated in this study of which 41 % had modified their teeth. More males (44.8%) than females (37.9%) were involved in this practice. Residential area and pay class had an impact on dental modification practices as the incidence increased within lower income areas. Six styles of modification were identified, of these; the removal of the upper four incisors (style 400) was often the style of choice (93. 7%). There were four stated reasons (peer pressure, fashion, gangsterism and medical/other) for dental modification of which peer pressure (in males) and fashion (in females) were the most popular. Dentists did most of the extractions. Three quarters of the entire study sample had family members with dental modifications. More than half (69.8%) of individuals with modifications wore dentures. Not only coloured people were modifying their teeth, some study subjects who had self-classified themselves as black or white also practiced it.

Resumen
Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent)
The Gauteng province is divided into 5 districts each of which have a public based oral health programme. Each district provides oral health treatments such as dental extractions with treatment of pain and sepsis, preventive dentistry, simple restorations, removable prosthodontics (complete and partial dentures) and minor oral surgery in selected facilities. The main treatment modality in most government based dental clinics is dental extractions (Department of Health, 2003). This indicates the poor status of the population’s teeth. Dental caries is a condition that can be prevented if adequate efforts are made to practice preventive dentistry. Preventive dentistry has been a treatment modality that has been practiced poorly or almost completely ignored in several oral health facilities for many years. This neglect could be due to several factors such as in adequate knowledge regarding preventive dentistry procedures, poor attitude towards preventive dentistry, lack of motivation, or lack of resources (Clark, 2011). The purpose of this study is to determine why preventive dentistry has been neglected for so many years.

Resumen
The purposes of this study were to evaluate if orthodontists’ and general dentists’ perceptions of how often, under what circumstances, and by which media orthodontists communicated with general dentists were similar, and to determine if orthodontists were meeting the communication needs of general dentists. Orthodontists (N=1,000) and general dentists (N=1,000) throughout the United States were randomly selected to participate in a web-based and mailed survey, respectively. The results indicated that the orthodontists communicated with general dentists using the type of media the general dentists preferred to use. As treatment complexity increased, orthodontists shifted from one-way forms of communication to two-way forms of communication (P < .05). Both orthodontists and general dentists reported that orthodontists’ communication regarding white spot lesions was inadequate. When treating patients with missing or malformed teeth, orthodontists reported they sought input from the general dentists at higher rate than the general dentists reported (P < .005).
