The main goal is to maximize automation of system design and analysis stages in order to create formal and nonlinear models of the system. Many modern CASE tools support structural and object-oriented methodologies for analyzing and designing information systems. The software is intended for solving specific user tasks and mainly for organizing the computing process of an information system. The application package is a powerful tool for automating user-defined tasks. It completely frees the user from the need to know how the functions and procedures of information processing are performed on the computer. CASE technologies are usually used when creating complex information systems that require collective project implementation. The absolute advantage of CASE technology is that documents are always responsible for the current state of work. Because any changes in the project are automatically displayed in the database.

Resumen

In this introductory piece to the special issue on design science research (DSR) in information systems, the authors probe the past research in DSR, introduce the papers in the special issue, discuss their contributions to the field, and conclude the paper by highlighting some potential directions for future research. To provide a good overview of the research domain, the authors review the key research approaches (or processes) that have been proposed and identify the concrete products of DSR that come in the form of artifacts. As the production of artifact is only part of the DSR process, the authors discuss the role of theorizing about these results and propose avenues for future design-oriented research. It is the authors’ strong belief that DSR should be at the heart of information systems discipline because it invites people to research the issues surrounding the development and organizational implementation of new systems.

Resumen

This paper arose from concerns regarding the current conceptualizations of ‘design’ in the emerging literature on design science (DS) in information systems (IS). In this paper, we argue that current conceptualizations of design in IS are overly narrow, which necessarily limits what is viewed as acceptable DS research. In response we advance a more encompassing view of design. The revised view extends the current perspectives of design in the IS literature to embrace broader conceptualizations of design, which are evident in many intellectual communities outside IS where design is viewed as a critical component of both research and practice - such as management, engineering, architecture and others. In addition to the fairly common conceptualizations of design as product and design as process or action, design is also conceived as: intention; planning - including modeling and representation; communication; user experience; value; professional practice; and as service. Further, whereas the current conceptualization of design in IS views IS design knowledge as split across two paradigms, namely DS and behavioral science, in this paper we argue for a broader and more integrated view of design: one that emphasizes both the construction-centered and human-centered aspects of design in IS. Building from our broader view, we discuss some of the implications for design-oriented research in IS, and consider ways in which this human- centered perspective might impact on the context and content of design research in IS.

Summary Objective: The goal of this research is to provide a framework to enable the model-based development, simulation, and deployment of clinical information system prototypes with mechanisms that enforce security and privacy policies. Methods: We developed the Model-Integrated Clinical Information System (MICIS), a software toolkit that is based on model-based design techniques and highlevel modeling abstractions to represent complex clinical workflows in a service-oriented architecture paradigm. MICIS translates models into executable constructs, such as web service descriptions, business process execution language procedures, and deployment instructions. MICIS models are enriched with formal security and privacy specifications, which are enforced within the execution environment. Results: We successfully validated our design platform by modeling multiple clinical workflows and deploying them onto the execution platform. Conclusions: The model-based approach shows great promise for developing, simulating, and evolving clinical information systems with formal properties and policy restrictions.

Resumen

Design plays a key role in the development of software. The quality of design is crucial and is a fundamental decision element in assessing the software product. The early availability of design quality evaluation provides a better way to decide the quality of the final product. This avoids presumption in the quality evaluation process. Hence Software Metrics provide a valuable and objective insight of enhancing each of the software quality characteristics. This paper proposes a quality model to assess the design phase of any object-oriented system based on the works of Chidamber, Kemrer and Basili and suggests two new metrics. The research focuses on analyzing a set of metrics, which has direct influence on the quality of the software and creating a metrics tool based on Java that can be used to validate the object-oriented projects against these metrics. The analysis is carried out on a set of real world projects designed using Unified Modeling Language, which are used as test cases. These metrics and models are proposed to add more quality information in refining any object-oriented system during the early stages of design itself.

A number of security mechanisms are available for improving the security of systems by restricting the actions of individual programs to activities that are authorised. However, configuring these systems to enforce end users’ own security goals is often beyond their expertise. Little research has investigated the usability issues associated with application-oriented access controls. This paper presents the results of a qualitative analysis of user perceptions of the usability of three application-oriented security systems: SELinux, AppArmor, and FBAC-LSM. Qualitative analysis identified a number of factors that affect the usability of application-restriction mechanisms. These themes are used to compare the usability of the three systems studied, and it is proposed that these factors can be used to inform the design of new systems and development of existing ones. Changes to the three security systems are also proposed to address or mitigate specific usability issues that were identified.

Resumen

Purpose A conceptual model describes important factors within a system and how they relate to one another. They are important because they help to identify system changes that can yield the greatest improvement. Within information retrieval (IR), most research is directed towards multi-document retrieval and a multi-interaction IR user scenario. There are few, if any, IR conceptual models supporting minimal or single-interaction IR (siIR) user scenarios, however the need for siIR systems is growing rapidly. The purpose of this paper is to take the first step towards constructing a task-oriented conceptual model and experimental framework to support siIR research. Design/methodology/approach A first principles approach is employed to develop a task-oriented conceptual model, called bridging information retrieval (BIR). This model is contrasted with the concept of relevance, a central factor within IR research. Findings BIR introduces the central concept of bridging information (BI) as the objective of IR systems. BI is the additional information a user requires to complete a task, beyond their innate knowledge. The relationship between BI and relevance is determined. Research limitations/implications The theoretical basis of BIR is derived axiomatically; however the resulting system evaluation model is speculative. Practical implications The proposed operational framework offers researchers a systematic approach to designing and evaluating siIR systems. Originality/value This work contributes a novel task-oriented IR conceptual model and evaluation framework, both centred around the concept of BI for siIR. It also contributes a novel search task classification method.

Resumen

Controlling information flows to prevent information leakage within an application is essential. According to the maturity of object-oriented techniques, many models were developed for the control in object-oriented systems. Since objects may be dynamically instantiated during program execution, controlling information flows among objects is difficult. Our research revealed that association is useful in the control. We developed an association-based information flow control model for object-oriented systems. It precisely controls information flows among objects through associations and constraints. It also offers features such as controlling method invocation through argument sensitivity, allowing declassification, allowing purpose-oriented method invocation, and precisely controlling write access. This paper proposes the model and the implementation of the model, which is composed of the language AbFlow (association-based flow) and its supporting environment.

Multiple combinations of hardware and network components can be selected to design an information technology (IT) infrastructure that satisfies organizational requirements. The professional criterion to deal with these degrees of freedom is cost minimization. However, a scientific approach has been rarely applied to cost minimization and a rigorous verification of professional design guidelines is still lacking. The methodological contribution of this paper is the representation of complex infrastructural design issues as a single cost-minimization problem. The approach to cost-minimization is empirically verified with a database of costs that has also been built as part of this research. The paper shows how an overall cost-minimization approach can provide significant cost reductions and indicates that infrastructural design rules previously identified by the professional literature can lead to sub-optimal solutions.

Purpose – This paper aims to present a conceptual methodology, named herein as object-oriented diplomatics, based on a presentation given by the author at the Digital Diplomatics 2014 conference. This methodology centers on building digital records capable of supporting their authenticity over time and when removed from their original systems by extending archival diplomatics theory by leveraging object-oriented programming (OOP) principles. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents new method for supporting the presumption of authenticity of digital records through extending archival diplomatics concepts into OOP principles when creating digital records within a record-keeping system. Findings – This paper is based on a preliminary research being conducted during the design of a government digital archives. This concept was used as a core design element for their digital archives and has thus far shown great promise in articulating and encapsulating those essential data elements that support the presumption of authenticity across a wide diversity of record types. Originality/value – This paper presents a new approach to support the presumption of authenticity of digital records by utilizing concepts from archival diplomatics leveraged with OOP principles. It is the hope of the author that this paper will initiate a deeper collaboration between archives and records management professionals and software developers in the design and implementation of digital repositories.

Based on metadata technique, this paper introduced metadata service oriented multi-source heterogeneous information data integration frame for large multi-source heterogeneous information integration management and interconnecting, intercommunicating, interoperability between different heterogeneous information systems. This metadata service oriented frame, benefiting from knowledge base of data warehouse, had 5 layers frame system including resource layer, integration layer, management layer, service layer and customer layer. Metadata service system contained data layer, directory service logic layer, data exchange layer and Web presentation layer. This paper represented that the metadata service was the core of integration frame, and the realization of integration management platform was feasible.

Current research in the field of pervasive information systems is predominantly focused on technical and engineering issues. In this paper, we look at the value chain boundaries of pervasive information systems. We identify a new value chain comprised of (1) infostructures, (2) devices, (3) interfaces, and (4) smart spaces that form the core elements of a pervasive information environment. We further investigate how businesses can achieve competitive advantage in this value-chain through the design and delivery of pervasive products and services. Different stakeholders at each level of the value chain are identified by surveying current research in the area as well as specific firm-level strategies and business models to determine key success factors. Based on our survey, we offer several propositions towards a managerial framework for conceptualizing pervasive information systems in today's service-oriented organizations.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the problems that exist in a company engaged in the sales of paper cutting machine that is on sale systems that are running on the company, identifying the needs of enterprise information and designing information systems that are able to meet the company’s information needs. The used methodology is the method of analysis and design methods. The analysis method is library research, observation, survey of the old system, the identification of information needs and interviews. Resumen

The article considers the task of modeling advanced information systems. The work is based on research on the development of a methodological apparatus for substantiating requirements for military-grade information systems. Currently the requirements for advanced information systems are formed in a natural language, the expressive properties of which are not enough for a concise and unambiguous description of them. The developed methodological approach is based on the construction of a complex of models of system with the integrated use of methodologies of functional and object-oriented modeling of the information system and related management processes, as well as the developed notation of user interface modeling. The use of a unified modeling language provides unambiguous interpretation of models by all participants in the process of developing an information system – from the customer to the developer.

Resumen

The optimal product design is an NP-hard marketing optimization problem, in which a firm aims at the maximization of its market share or profit. A manager that deals with the problem has to decide on a number of issues, such as how to simulate the consumer choice process, which optimization algorithm to apply, and how to model the competitors’ retaliatory moves. The existing information systems fail to provide the decision maker with the unique blend of techniques and resources required by the problem. In order to follow the way that marketing managers comprehend the optimal product process, in this paper the problem is broken down into distinct services, each one of them maps into a basic feature (simulation, optimization, competition analysis, etc.). All services are aggregated to a marketing decision support system by a service oriented architecture, achieving this way a decision-makers friendly environment, since the marketing managers are able to get a solution without the need to transfer data and parameters from one software to another, and without the need to coordinate manually the whole process.

Design studies using primary data and secondary data, system development methodology using output oriented methodology, process oriented methodology and the data oriented methodology. While the structure of system development used by the authors is Waterfall. Collaborative business and information systems design touches a number of issues that lie within the realm of different research areas. It deals with design as such, and in particular with design in and for groups. It is also concerned with socio-technical systems and hence with human-computer interaction as well as IT-mediated human-human interaction. This introduces collaboration issues. The significant complexity of the business and information systems that are in the focus of the design endeavor calls for modeling as an instrument for managing this complexity. This article maps the terrain of collaborative business and information systems design by surveying the contributions that are made by related areas of research.

Resumen

This article contends that design science research (DSR) has emerged as an important approach in information systems (IS) research. The design science research roadmap (DSRR) model describes the process of using the DSR in IS in great detail. Unfortunately, the existing literature does not address the task of demonstrating the use of the DSRR in detail by conducting a real case study. This article aims to examine the implementation of the DSRR with real IS research activities. The construction of a systematic innovation framework to solve problems for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is used as a case study for demonstration purposes. This article shows that the DSRR provides very useful guidance, since it covers almost all the necessary steps to conduct DSR in the information systems field. The illustrations provided with each step of the DSRR in this article will help other researchers, especially novice researchers, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of the DSRR model.

Computer-based clinical decision support (CDS) contributes to cost savings, increased patient safety and quality of medical care. Most existing CDS systems are stand-alone products (first generation) or part of complete electronic medical record packages (second generation). Experience shows that creating and maintaining CDS systems is expensive and requires effort that should be economized by sharing them among multiple users. It makes good economic sense to share CDS service installations among a larger set of client systems. The paradigm of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) embraces this idea of sharing distributed services. Some attempts making CDS services available to distributed health information systems exist. However, these approaches have not gained much adoption. We argue that they do not provide a sufficient level of decoupling between client and CDS in order to be broadly reusable in SOAs. In this paper, we present a new CDS service component called EGADSS, which has been designed and implemented with the declared objective to minimize the coupling between client and CDS server. We present our key design decisions, which are guided by empirical research in SOA development. We evaluate our result theoretically by measuring the level of decoupling achieved compared to existing CDS approaches. Furthermore, we report on an empirical evaluation of the resulting design, integrating the EGADSS service with an example client system.

Resumen

Geospatially-oriented social media communications have emerged as a common information resource to support crisis management. The research presented compares the capabilities of two popular systems used to collect and visualize such information - Project Epic’s Tweak the Tweet (TtT) and Ushahidi. The research uses geospatially-oriented social media gathered by both projects during recent disasters to compare and contrast the frequency, content, and location components of contributed information to both systems. The authors compare how data was gathered and filtered, how spatial information was extracted and mapped, and the mechanisms by which the resulting synthesized information was shared with response and recovery organizations. In addition, the authors categorize the degree to which each platform in each disaster led to actions by first responders and emergency managers. Based on the results of the comparisons the authors identify key design considerations for future social media mapping tools to support crisis management.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to define critical design and evaluation factors of business models (BM) for mobile network operators (MNOs) in general, and more specifically for mobile data services. Design/methodology/approach – This paper follows a qualitative approach. Aiming to identify critical design factors for mobile BMs, this research, as a part of larger research, examines three real-life cases related to mobile data service BM design and engineering. These cases are Orange Business Services (OBS); Apple’s iPhone services and applications, and NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode service. Findings – In this paper, the authors provide a framework for designing and developing Market-Aligned, Cohesive, Dynamic, Explicit, and Unique BMs with Fitting Network-Mode, which, if adopted by MNOs, would ensure their long-term success by improving the sustainability and innovation capabilities of their BMs. These critical design factors address different spheres of the mobile business: “Cohesion” and “Explicitness” are operator-oriented, whereas “Market-Alignment,” “Dynamicity,” “Uniqueness,” and “Fitting Network-Mode” are industry-oriented. Research limitations/implications – Although the paper provides in-depth analysis of three case studies in the context of mobile telecommunications, the authors cannot claim that the developed framework can be generalized to all services in the mobile telecommunications industry. Further validation through empirical testing is preferred and this could be done in future research. Practical implications – The developed framework is of value to MNOs as it provides them with a holistic approach for designing and also evaluating successful BMs over time. This is because the developed framework defines critical design factors for BMs in the contexts of their environments. Originality/value – The domain of BMs is still emerging within the field of information systems. The majority of prior studies either tackled the issue of BM definition or provided taxonomies and classifications of this concept. The originality of this paper comes from the fact that it takes further steps in developing the concept by providing a comprehensive framework which encapsulates critical design and evaluation factors of mobile BMs.

Since Hurricane Katrina, a lot of research has gone into improving disaster management through the use of crisis information management systems (CIMS). There has been much interest in how to design dynamic CIMS, particularly with respect to web-based emergency management systems. In the authors' research, they set out to design and develop a distributed web-based training and research tool for emergency managers and scholars. In order to develop their training system, they needed to simulate the CIMS that emergency managers use during a crisis and with which they could run training and research simulations. This raised the question: What exactly is a CIMS, and how does one design one? In order to answer this question, the authors engaged in nine months of field research at the Miami-Dade Emergency Operations Center in Miami-Dade County, FL. Through their field research and the emergency management experience of one of the authors, they identified several additional design principles for CIMS in today's technological and communication landscape. This paper outlines the resulting recommendations.

Smart building is the result of the penetration of information technology and control technology into traditional buildings, and is the future development direction of buildings. User-centric building smart design can achieve a sustainable life, and smart technology integration based on smart design can support sustainable development and improve user satisfaction, happiness, and overall quality of life. In intelligent design, researchers focus on the “people-oriented” approach, designed to bring users the ultimate interactive experience. Based on the interactive experience principle of smart design in the smart building system, this article classifies and summarizes intelligent design from the “five senses” interaction, including visual interaction, voice interaction, tactile interaction, cognitive interaction, and emotional interaction. We analyze the application of smart design in architecture and discuss how to embody the principles of user-centered interactive experience design in the process of smart design. This article provides a comprehensive and systematic literature review, clarifies the importance of the “people-oriented” approach in the smart design of buildings, and summarizes how to improve the sustainability of intelligent buildings from the perspective of a “people-oriented” approach. This paper proposes future research suggestions and directions and promotes the sustainable development of the smart building.

Resumen

Because planning management of the leisure and tourism-oriented suburban villages lags behind, a series of problems occur: sustainable development of rural tourism is limited, and the content of planning management is unclear, and implement does not reach the designed position. In order to solve these problems, through research and analysis, we master the status quo of planning management of leisure and tourism-oriented suburban villages in China, and determine the content of planning management. The author analyze the interactive relationship between system theory and leisure and tourism-oriented suburban rural planning management and construct a planning management system based on the perspective of systems theory. The informatization design of system was achieved by information technology. The results show that the informatization system based on the perspective of system theory not only provides a solution for the planning management of the leisure and tourism-oriented suburban villages, but also lays a foundation for software development and website function design.
