Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to examine the different guitar techniques as well as my own technological development with emphasis on methodology and progression. The theoretical perspective is design theory and the research questions are: What resources do I use when practicing some specifically selected guitar techniques? How can I use these resources in teaching? During the eight weeks, I intensely focused on my own technology development using logbook, metronome and video, with the goal to achieve technological development. The results are presented by two themes: Resources for the qualitative technique training and Resources for the teaching of guitar technique. These themes describe how my own technical shortcomings become visible and managed and how I can use this kind of knowledge to contribute to the development of students' potential technical problems. The discussion describes the resources to practice techniques and resources for student analysis.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is, from a design theoretical perspective, to study how three different memorizing strategies of a piano piece takes shape. This includes the question: How do I design three different strategies for memorization of Etude op. 10 no. 2 by Chopin? The three different ways to memorize the music was based on previous literature and research. During a time period of five weeks, I used logbook and video documentation as a method to study this process. The theoretical perspective that was used to describe the process was the design theoretical perspective. The results showed that method one, “Memorizing by rote”, created a choreography of the hands – a kinesthetic memory. This by using different physical and material resources. Method two, “Visualization” designed the learning through two transformation cycles. For the third method, “Conceptual memorization”, Analysis and the Two-Chair technique was two overall designs. In the discussion these results are put in relation to the literature, previous research and from the theoretical perspective.

Texto completoIn this independent project my learning process of a solo by the jazz bass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is described and explored. The solo is from the song Stella by Starlight from the Art of the Duo album with Philip Catherine from 1993. The purpose is to explore how my own learning process is designed when studying this solo. It is based on observations of myself in the form of a logbook and video recordings of 20 practicing sessions in the fall of 2014. The starting point is a multimodal and design theoretical perspective. The result show how I use different resources when learning this solo: Different bodily resources in terms of voice and movements, consideration and decomposition, the other strings of the bass, combinations of different resources, but also technical resources in terms of music apps. Finally I discuss, in relation to the design theoretical perspective and earlier research, the conditions for learning the solo, and the strategies of exercises.

Texto completoIn this independent work my learning process in the composing of a short music piece for soprano and piano is explored and described from a design theory perspective. The study is based on video recorded self-observations, which lasted 3 months. The result of the analysis shows how the learning process takes place with the help of concepts from the design theory perspective like resources of learning and two kinds of transformation cycles. The result is represented in three different themes, which are The beginning of the compositional process, Second faze of the compositional process and Ending of the compositional process. In the result it showed that a plural resources, for instance playing as a resource, listening, seeing, notation program etcetera were used to reach a satisfied progression. Finally I discuss my results in relation to chosen literature that proceeds from previous relevant research and the design theoretical perspective.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to watch how planning affects the efficiency of the studying of new repertoire. This study has a design theoretical perspective and is based on ideas from persons as Robert Schenck, Gunnar Lif, Harald Jørgensen, Johannes L. Hatfield and Roger Säljö. I have used video observation and a logbook to document and analyze the learning process. In the results, it is described which modes and resources that have been used as well as which didactic methods that have been used. Also, which of the two structures that was compared got the best results. Some of the modes and resources that were used was the body, voice, piano, iPhone and the app iReal, sheet music book, music stand and a mirror. The differences in modes and resources between the two structures was primarily how the time was disposed and the tools needed to keep the time. The didactic methods used were a singing warm-up, repetition, scaffolding, an increasing difficulty and studying of the harmony. The differences that existed were among other things, how the time were distributed and the way the melody was learnt. The planned practice made the studying of the song faster and made the end result better. In the discussion, the results are problematized to understand the pros and cons of the two structures.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to examine music teachers’ views of and management of pupils’ exercise. Data were collected through interviews with four instrumental teachers working in arts school/high school/college or university. Two of the informants work mainly in the classical genre and two in both the classical genre and the Afro-genre. The interview method was qualitative, with an overall main question and then with open follow-up questions. The analysis of the data was performed from a perspective of design theory. The result shows that the respondents use multiple resources simultaneously to create the conditions for the students to learn how to practice. How the balance between resources looks vary both depending on the workplace of the informants and the age of the pupils. The result also shows that the informants see the playing of an instrument as a craft and that practice is necessary to becoming better at the craft. The discussion compares teachers’ preferences with the educational program requirements and guidelines as well as the pupils’ social environment. The discussion furthermore highlights exercise in relation to the design and multimodal resources.

Texto completoThe aim of this study is to explore how some selected approaches of learning, mediated by leading percussionist and percussion teachers, is used by and works for one students rehearsal of a musical work. These three approaches were used when practicing the Concerto for Marimba and Strings of Emanuel Sejourné. Audio recordings and log book was the basis for the analysis of what worked well for me in my own practice and how I experienced the different methods during exercise. The result shows that above all enjoyment factor is a contributor to a successful practicing. Other important factors reported are the importance of knowledge and the music before you start to practice and the importance of preventively practicing as a real concert. At the end, the results of the study is discussed in relation to the presented literature and previous research in the subject.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to find out if it is possible to become better at sight-reading melodies during a shorter period, in this case eight weeks with 15 minutes of daily training. With a video recorder, I have documented a selection of daily training sessions based on a book that specifically focuses on sight-reading melodies. Furthermore, I have written a logbook to document my personal experiences during the process. Theoretical perspective is design theory. The results shows how different resources are handled, and the learning progression of the process are described. It appears that I during this period, have become better at sight-reading melodies and it is also clear that I use bodily resources quite a lot while practicing sight-reading. Lastly, in the last chapter I discuss the preconditions given by the book and what resources that has been created during my learning period.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is based on a design theoretic perspective, exploring what resources I use when transposing jazz tunes to different keys. The research questions are: What resources do I use to transpose a selected jazz tune to different keys? In what ways interact the resources? To study my learning process, I have used the logbook and video documentation, and the study's theoretical perspective is the design theory. The result shows that my learning process can be described in two different transformation cycles. These cycles, I have chosen to call the transformation cycle 1a and 1b. Transformation cycle 1a describes the resources used for transcription, and Transformation cycle 1b describes the resources used for transposing. The first transformation cycle 1a is presented by means of three themes: Staging, From the PC to the ear and From ear to hand. The other cycle, 1b, is presented by means of four themes: Transposing from A-flat major to C major, Problems during the transposing, Transposing to other keys and Transformation of previous knowledge. The discussion chapter discusses the results from a design theoretic perspective. The discussion also touches questions of strategy about transposing, which these being compared with the previous literature and research in the area. Finally, an account is given of my own reflections on the work, the importance of work and further research and development work.

Texto completoReading and analyzing literature has a long tradition of being an essential part of the teaching of English in Sweden. As the offers of entertainment have increased in popular culture with the introduction of computer games, internet and other media, interest in reading novels has decreased. Literature is still a compulsory part of English teaching and the question is how teachers of today use literature and what kind of literary instruction they use.
The aim of this study is to explore and discuss the literary instruction discourse in pedagogical texts, lessons, created by and for English teachers of Swedish Upper Secondary Schools. The lessons have been collected from the site lektion.se, where teachers are able to share knowledge and lessons. The study uses an analytical method based on Norman Fairclough´s Critical Discourse Analysis in order to analyze the lessons. In the analysis aspects of language, intertextuality and assumptions are discussed. As a theoretical base, Louise M. Rosenblatt´s and Judith Langer´s ideas of reader centered literary instruction is used as well as Design Theory.
The result of the study shows that the overall discourse is text orientated and, with few exceptions, there is little room for students to contribute to a creative, personal experience of literature. Furthermore, it is shown that literary texts are often used as an exercise of reading comprehension and specific literary reading is scarce. The study postulates that more effort should be put into involving the students in the reading, and less effort on literary terminology.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to contribute to further knowledge of how double bass teachers design their group lessons for double bass students. There seems to be a lack of studies that treat group tuition for double bass. The background chapter therefore provides pros and cons about group tuition, different methods for group tuition used by string teachers and previous research in the field that shows the positive effects of group tuition. The theoretical starting point of this study is based upon the design theoretical and multimodal perspective. The collected data material consists of two video documentations from two different double bass teachers. The result chapter describes how the teachers use speech, song, double bass words, gestures and the double bass as resources in teaching. The result also shows that the teachers design their lessons differently and use different kinds of techniques when playing. In the concluding discussion chapter the teachers’ different resources and how they design their lessons is lifted as the main topics according to the design theoretical and multimodal perspective. One of the conclusions in the discussion is that the teachers’ position towards the students is significant for the students’ ability to imitate and transform gestures from the teacher.

Texto completoThis study examines how planning can be designed and how planning of practice affects practice motivation. The motivation for the study is based on a lost motivation for practice that I strive to find again. The study is based on the design theory perspective. The material for the study was collected through video observations and a journal, and the material was analysed relative to questions based on the design theory perspective. The result of the study shows that I use many different kinds of semiotic resources in my practice. It also shows that planning of my practice affects my practice positively, as I have a clearer view of what I should practice.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to explore a musician's body language when studying an orchestral part. The observation took place during my own practice of the first flute part in the fourth movement of Brahms' second symphony and also during the rehearsal with the orchestra. The study has its basis in the perspective of design theory and I have used video observations during the rehearsal period of the work. I have also written a logbook during the process of self-observation. The result shows that the physical resources can help, but also hinder the musical process and its expression. In the end I discuss among other things how resources are used, seen from the design theory perspective.

Texto completoThe present study is a self-observation meant to study how my learning process takes shape during the studying of the piece Old French Song, played on the double bass. The study is based on a design theoretical perspective on learning. The learning process proceeded for five weeks during the autumn of 2018, making for a total of 22 separate practice occasions of which five was documented using video recording. The result shows the different resources used in the design of my learning process, and the different ways they were used. It also shows in what way different resources were combined to form a multimodal learning process. The last section discusses the result based on previous research on the studying of musical pieces, and in relation to a design theoretical perspective on learning.

Texto completoThe purpose of this self-observation study is to investigate how various predetermined practice designs, based on auditory, visual and imaginary approaches, are used to learn text by heart in musical contexts. The study is based on a design-theoretical perspective focusing on how semiotic resources are used for learning. For six weeks, I practiced an hour every day. Each practice session was documented in a logbook and about 15 minutes was were video recorded. Finally, I discuss the result in relation to previous research

Texto completoNew digital open universitites with free access to knowledge change the conditions of how learning occurs. This is a study into the new conditions of learning through the digital humanities. A designtheoretical multimodal perspective as well as hermeneutic thoery have been deployed to problematize the digital humanities. The study has been performed with the open method of literature analyses and the anthology Digital Humanities Pedagogy: Principles, Practices, Politics has been the object of study. The study questions the digital humanities from knowledge creating activities within learning and, at the same time, how learning may benefit from interacting with the digital. The study concludes what the effects of the digital humanities may be on theories of learning, on the student and on the institutions

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to gain further insight into how voice teachers, through the help of communicative resources, address voice lessons. The background chapter presents research within the fields of communication through body language, the pupils’ acquisition and relationship to knowledge, in addition to the teachers’ choice of educational content. Furthermore, multimodality and design theory are presented as points of departure. The study was made using stimulated recall interview and video recordings. Four voice teachers, who teach in Swedish high schools, participated in the study. Voice lessons were videotaped and the voice teachers were interviewed. In the result chapter, the means and recourses applied are described, as well as the ways through which they communicate with the pupils. As role models, the voice teachers have demonstrated various ways in using the voice. Computers are often used during the voice lessons in choosing repertoire and backgrounds. A few voice teachers direct questions to the pupils in order to help them reflect on their own learning process. The voice teachers devoted more time on vocal techniques than interpretation. Fewer resources were spent on sight reading. In the chapter on discussion, the premises of learning and the framework for teaching are discussed.

Texto completoThe purpose with this self-observation study, based on the design theory, is to explore how my mental preparations in front of a concert or audition is designed with help of different resources. The research questions read as follows: Which semiotic resources do I use during mental training before a concert or audition? How do my thoughts, feelings and behaviour transforms during a period of mental training? The study is based on self-observations consisting of logbook writing and video recordings during a three-month period of mental training. The result of the analysis is presented in two different themes, Support and resources in mental training which describes the different resources in my mental training and how the resources cooperate with each other. The other theme Transformations shows how my thoughts, feelings and behaviour changes and transforms during my process. Finally, I discuss the result of the analysis in relation to literature based on the design theoretical perspective and previous research in the field of mental training.

Texto completoIn this self-study, I explore my own learning process while writing a composition for violin, flute and piano. The study is based on the perspective of design theory and is also based on literature and research in the subject of composition and music-making. This self-study is also based on observations from several video, sound and log recorded compositional events during autumn 2017. The result chapter is divided into three different stages of the process of the composition: The beginning of the composition, The development of the compositionand The final phase of the composition. The result answers the two research questions and the purpose of this study: What resources do I use when writing music and how the actual process of my composition takes place. In the discussion, these results are set in relation to the selected literature, research and the design theory perspective.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to from a design theory and multimodal perspective study how instructional videos for brass instrument playing on YouTube are designed. Five videos were selected and transcribed and analyzed. The analysis showed that all videos had a similar content focusing on buzzing and tone production. The content of the videos was quite well matched with literature on the subject. The speech was used as the main resource for communication of the content. The body and instrument were used to a lesser extent, and mostly together with the speech. The technical resources in the form of, for example, digital images and text were used to a very small extent. The discussion reveals different possibilities for what the combination of resources means for the communication of the content. In the videos, musical and instrument-technical concepts were explained to different extent, which places greater or lesser demands on those who want to use the video to have their own knowledge in the field in order to gain from the teaching. Those who want to use YouTube video tutorials should be source-critical and have the ability to work independently towards a goal.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to examine how a percussionist uses her body as a semiotic resource and how the process of practising during a limited period is designed. In order to realize this I have self-monitored my 20 minute long practice sessions five days a week during a five-week period. This process has been documented by a video recording device and by writing a log after each session. In the analysis I use design theory as a theoretical perspective. The results show that my body is used both as an expressive tool as well as substitute for the metronome. During the practice sessions, tempo appears to be the main focus, and the musical piece is played in separate movements and rarely played from beginning to end. In the last chapter usage of the body as a semiotic resource is discussed from a design theoretical perspective. Lastly the use and quality of my practice strategy is discussed in relation to relevant literature and research.

Texto completoIn this independent work my rehearsal process of Rhapsody for solo clarinet written by Giacomo Miluccio is explored and described from a design theory perspective. The study is based on self-observations that lasted for about 6 months and collected data consists of logbook writing and video recordings. The result of the analysis show how the learning is done with the help of various semiotic resources, and in the form of two transformation cycles, where the first is characterized by a Desire for mimesis, and the other by The way to my own expression. As a bridge between these two cycles will be an occasion where the representation takes the form of a Masterclass. Finally, I discuss my results in relation to literature based on the design theoretical perspective and other previous research in the field of learning.

Texto completoThis study examines a learning process in improvisation based on historical western art music repertoire and two sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. The purpose of this project was to see how my ability to improvise was affected by practice and study of historical improvisation. Improvisation was explored on basis of historical improvisation techniques and contemporary research during the practice period of this study. The practice period took place over ten weeks and was documented with video observation and a logbook, which then was transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. In the result section I describe my design of my improvisation practice and the consequences of that design. The exploration of improvisation went from free to exploration to a more restricted exploration by the end of the practice period. A number of signs of development of my ability to improvise could be observed by the end of the practice period. I also found that my improvisations became more stringent, with a more stable flow and with more musical ideas during the project. The discussion section discusses different perspectives of improvisation in relation to the result.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to examine my own learning process and how my playing is affected when practicing guitar technique. I documented one practice session every week during the appointed practice period, using the help of video documentation. I also used a logbook as a compliment to document what happened during the learning process. A design theoretical perspective was used as a basis for the study. In the result section, I describe how I designed my practicing and what consequences this had for my playing. The use of many different types of resources for learning turned out to provide positive results. Over time I developed structure and accuracy in my practice. In the last section I discuss how my orchestration of resources created opportunities to practice guitar technique, and how this orchestration changed over time. I also discuss the importance to begin all practice in a pleasant tempo as well as the importance to practice with structure and accuracy.

Texto completoThe purpose of the present study is to examine my own learning process with a modern opera aria. The study is based on a design theoretical perspective on learning with focus on the concepts design, multimodality and semiotic resources. The process went on for three weeks during the autumn 2017 with a total of 14 practising sessions. To be able to document the learning process during these practising sessions, the methods video observation and logbook were used. The design of the learning process is described in the result by two different themes; Creatively unstructured and The endeavour to the overall experience. The result also shows that physical resources were used during the learning process to embody musical parameters, while material resources became a complement to the physical resources in a concrete way. In the last section, the result is discussed relative to a design theoretical perspective on learning and to previous research on practise and rehearsal methods. Some aspects are the meaning of a sounding example to listen to relative to the aspect of the overall experience, and the creatively unstructured learning process and its impact on the practice progression.

Texto completoPlaying a piece by heart is an important aspect of being a musician, despite this there are few concrete guidelines for how the memorization process is optimized, and musicians often find their own way. The purpose of this study was therefore to, from a design theory perspective, investigate which resources underlie effective memorization. To investigate this, two memorization methods, constructed in line with previous literature and research, were tested on two Intermezzo by Brahms. Method one was based on mechanical learning without analysis, method two was based on harmonics analysis. Video observation and logbook were used to document the process, efficiency was measured by utilized hours. Results showed that method two depended more on conceptual framework compared to method one, the methods were however similar in other used resources. Method two (5 hours 15 minutes) was more time-efficient than method one (14 hours 20 minutes). In addition to the improved efficiency, method two contributed to greater awareness in the memorization process, which in turn led to increased motivation for memorization. The discussion examines the study's results in relation to previous literature and research.
