Resumen
In the preparation of drawings and documents required for a licensing process, the main problem is the duplication of work in creating design drawings and Building Information Modeling (BIM) models. To overcome this problem, BIM authoring tools provide a drawing generation function. However, it is difficult to use it in a construction project involving multiple actors using different authoring tools for each design actor. Owing to these problems, the drawing generation program, which is based the on the industry foundation classes (IFC) concept is not limited to the authoring tools used in the project, and it is intended to minimize duplication by outputting drawings in dwg and pdf formats. In this study, the IFC data structure required for generating drawings was analyzed and drawing elements on the basis of the shape and attribute information, certain drawing elements were output as 3D scenes in order to obtain detailed plan, elevation, cross-section, and structural drawings, which are required for an IFC-based licensing process. In addition, 2D drawings were generated through post-processing for obtaining drawing-level outputs. On the basis of BIM design guidelines, it was found that the information required in license drawings can be minimized, and the license licensing process can be based on a separate BIM technology. In other words, based on the licensing environment in Korea, the effectiveness of the automatic 2D drawing generation program was verified through a comparative analysis on the basis of the drawings and information required by assuming that a specific set of drawing elements were required in the existing licensing process and for BIM-based licensing. Furthermore, it was examined whether books required in the licensing process can be replaced by a parking lot plan that can be submitted through a BIM-technology-based legality review system.

Resumen
ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a study conducted to determine whether unit-oriented construction drawings, which are being developed and used by shipbuilders using modern zone-oriented, or modular, construction techniques, will satisfactorily substitute for system-oriented detailed arrangement drawings in the Navy's life-cycle maintenance management process. The study concluded that modular construction drawings will provide the necessary data in a more usable format, and thus are the preferred approach for the Navy's use. However, the study also identified several additionally needed features that are not now being provided in unit-oriented drawings, but which must be included in order to meet the needs of planning and maintenance activities during the operational life of a ship. A number of other observations about drawing use and maintenance are provided.

Resumen
Joy in the Act of Drawing: Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts focuses on Bernard Maybeck's working drawings for the surviving fragment of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Because it was originally designed as a temporary structure, it has been dismissed by some critics as the roughly detailed product of a speedy production process. However, Alexander Ortenberg shows that the working drawings were carefully produced in accordance with the professional standards of American Beaux-Arts architecture. What appear to be crude details were the product of thoughtful study, in which the charcoal of the earlier sketches was translated into the hard ink line of working drawings. Exploiting the liveliness of the drawing medium, Maybeck invented architectural details that preserved the freshness of his initial sketches and helped to define the theatrical character of the building.

Resumen
This article is based on a case study of one shipyard’s effort to make the flow of engineering drawings feeding into its production process more reliable. To construct a ship, detailed drawings of every part of the product is an essential input. For these drawings to be reliable, they must include all relevant information, they have to follow each other in a proper line of order, and they should be released according to production milestones. In the shipyard in this study, an analysis was initiated to explore the management of engineering drawing. The main findings show that the usability of ICT is limited for this purpose, and that to really make an effort in order for engineering drawings to be reliable, a more basic understanding of the interpersonal communication at work in a one-off project environment is fundamental.

Resumen
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) attached fundamental importance to his drawings, in particular to the famous Themes et Variations series. These were accomplished following a precise method, starting with arduous life studies and evolving into brilliant spontaneous drawings. A 1946 archival documentary film showing the artist drawing four portraits of his grandson Gerard was shot in such a way as to allow the present author to undertake a detailed eye-hand interaction analysis of the drawing process. It was found that Matisse's temporal working rhythm and use of motor memory resulted in a more direct approach than that used by most painters. Taken together with remarks the artist made throughout his lifetime, these results provide a cognitive interpretation of his drawing method.

The article analyses the drawings of Diocletian’s Palace at Split which had belonged to the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and which represent the only surviving Renaissance drawings of the most important late antique architectural structure on the east Adriatic coast. Today, they are housed at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London and in the Devonshire collection, Chatsworth. A detailed analysis of the drawing technique, the paper, the handwriting and the style of the drawings, have confirmed the opinion of the scholars who argued that the ground-plan of the emperor’s mausoleum was drawn by an unknown artistand that Palladio added his sketches at a later point; the drawing of the mausoleum’s portal was also made by the same artist. Both drawings were most probably produced in Vicenza during the last quarter of the sixteenthcentury. The ground-plan of the palace itself was drawn by Palladio on the basis of an earlier source. It is likely that a version of the palace ground-plan whichhad served as a model to Palladio remained at Split and that the drawings published by Daniele Farlati in the eighteenth century relied on it rather than on those produced by Johann Fischer von Erlach, as it was argued until now.

Resumen
AbstractMuch of our knowledge about the solar dynamo is based on sunspot observations. It is thus desirable to extend the set of positional and morphological data of sunspots into the past. Gustav Spörer observed in Germany from Anklam (1861–1873) and Potsdam (1874–1894). He left detailed prints of sunspot groups, which we digitized and processed to mitigate artifacts left in the print by the passage of time. After careful geometrical correction, the sunspot data are now available as synoptic charts for almost 450 solar rotation periods. Individual sunspot positions can thus be precisely determined and spot areas can be accurately measured using morphological image processing techniques. These methods also allow us to determine tilt angles of active regions (Joy's law) and to assess the complexity of an active region.

STARKA Betongelement AB is a privately owned company with a focus on manufacturing prefabricated concrete elements. STARKA works with everything from design, manufacturing to the assembly of concrete elements. The process that is mainly studied is their design process, here the different elements are planned to be manufactured and assembled. For the manufacture and assembly, drawings are produced as a basis for this work, these drawings consist of detailed drawings. The creation of these details is currently a time-consuming process; hence, this study aims to develop a more efficient working method that can both make it easier for designers and reduce demanding working hours. During the work, the design thinking process is followed as a method when developing the solution. The method consists of four primary phases, starting with understanding the problem that has been given. Furthermore, the area of the problem is studied, through various literature studies, observations, interviews and various tests. After forming a good foundation, different ideas are created to solve the problem. Finally, the final solution is implemented at the company and the implementation was evaluated. Results consist of an AutoLISP-program that consists of all the necessary functions under one program, to create the detailed drawings for production. The functions that appear in the program are as follows: measurement of details, in-cast goods measurement, cut line, reinforcement text and “hitsymbol”. Features and their specifications used in the program have been identified through interviews and observations with the engineers at STARKA. For assembly drawings, two different solutions have been developed, the first of which tackles engineers' problems in creating complicated details. This is achieved by utilizing the construction’s 3D-model to create the desired detailed drawings. The second solution focuses on generalizing different standard parts and eliminating excess information, such as external dimensions. This in turn creates a better prerequisite for more general details that can be reused in new drawings to save working time. s a conclusion for production drawings, the work is facilitated by the program consist of all the necessary functions. Since the features have their pre-inserted specifications, there is no need to configure them afterwards and the insertion becomes correct from the first step. The designers have found the solution helpful and have simplified their work by making “handpåläggning” more efficient and reducing working hours. “Handpåläggning” consist of the functions and methods that the engineers at STARKA use to finalize the drawings. Regarding assembly drawings, the use of 3D-models is considered to be very demanding on computers, but good assistance in complicated details. The standard details make it easier to use standard generalized details to avoid creating and editing new ones for each project.

Resumen
AbstractUrban Internet of Things (IoT) is in an early speculative phase. Often linked to the smart city movement, it provides a way of sensing and collecting data—environmental, societal, and transitional—both automatically, remotely, and with increasing levels of spatial and temporal detail. From city-wide data collection down to the scale of individual buildings and rooms, this chapter details the technology behind the rise of IoT in urban areas and explores the challenges (societal and technical) behind city-wide deployments. Drawing from a series of deployments at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, it details the challenges and opportunities for mass data collection. Widening out the view, it looks at what is becoming known as “the humble lamp post” in Urban IoT fields to detail the potential of Urban IoT with the objects that already form part of the urban fabric. Finally, it examines the potential of Urban IoT for input into urban modeling and how we are on the edge of a shift in the collection, analysis, and communication of urban data.

Resumen
Drawings of landscapes are often used to record large-scale geological structures in Earth Science. This chapter describes how to draw geological features exposed within landscapes with a focus on the methods used to produce accurate and detailed field sketches. The tactics in drawing large fields of view, landscapes with significant topography, and vegetated landscapes with sparse outcrops are described. Three worked examples of landscape field sketches are provided to illustrate how best to record tectonic structures and volcanic features exposed over topography. Topographic features such as ravines and ridges can be added as lines to add additional value. Common mistakes considered include insufficient detail and schematic vegetation.

Resumen
In past decades, for developing a site, engineers used the process of creating a scale model in order to determine their behaviour and to sketch the details collected manually using the drafting process, which behaves as a referring material during the construction of structures. Due to the boom in technology and limitations in drafting, the drawings have been digitized using computer-aided design (CAD) software as a two-dimensional structure (2D). Currently, these drawings are detailed as a three-dimensional structure (3D) that is briefly noted as 3D modelling. Three-dimensional site modelling is an active area that is involved in research and development of models in several fields that has been originated from the scale modelling. In this chapter, the topic 3D site modelling in civil engineering is discussed. First of all, the basic concepts of scale modelling, architectural modelling, and structural modelling are discussed. Then the concept of virtual-based 3D site modelling, its importance, benefits, and steps involved in site modelling are briefed.

Resumen
The most powerful Venetian cardinals in the sixteenth century were arguably those stemming from the Grimani family. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of the MS Morosini Grimani 270 in the Biblioteca del Museo Correr in Venice, focusing on drawings that illustrate the appointment of Grimani cardinals, alongside their portraits. The iconographic derivation of these drawings from existing works of art will be explored through comparison with painted portraits and other visual representations of the Grimani cardinals, some previously unidentified. The possible function of the included cardinal portraits, and the historical scenes relating to them will be investigated, considering the role of images of cardinals within the dynastic strategies and histories of certain families.

Resumen
At the conceptual product design stage, designers prefer sketching initial design ideas on paper before using more sophisticated 3D CAD systems for their creativity and flexible design changes. At the later detailed design stages, however, precise 3D CAD modeling is a better choice for design analyses and downstream manufacturing applications. For an integrated digital product development, the 2D drawings need to be converted to 3D CAD models manually through some laborious and time-consuming processes. For decades, many researchers have contributed to the studies on reconstructing 3D geometric models from 2D sketches, but few describe constructing parametric feature-based CAD models that are currently widely used in the detailed design stages. In this paper, a procedure for constructing a feature-based 3D CAD model directly from a single-view 2D drawing is presented. The input sketch is assumed to be an exact orthogonal projection of a 3D model viewed at a general orientation. The model geometry is limited such that it can be constructed by a Boolean combination of extrusions of polygonal profiles.

Resumen
Accurate, reliable and cost effective design of steel structures in heavy & medium engineering industrial sector plays a key role in the growth of industrial development. Objective is to get awareness about the difficulties faced by engineers / managers for reducing time to minimum level for preparation of drawings and other detailing work. New concept of detailed engineering techniques is introduced, which guides, how to customize design detailing stage and how to overcome (i-e optimize) delays to meet final production targets of the product in an Heavy Duty Engineering company specialize in the manufacturing of huge and massive steel structure frames. Design engineers must understand basic tools, methods, latest techniques which will be used for minimizing cost and time effect in the production of steel structures. Extensive knowledge of AutoCAD, AutoLISP for design and customization technique is required for the production drawing as output for shop floor. For sustainable engineering development, it becomes utmost important to utilize detailed engineering customization technique. This approach mainly governs on theoretical design approach, practical / on-the-job experience and computer aided design techniques. Use of all above approaches can lead to the successful achievement of efficient engineering optimization techniques / procedures. Because of complex and complicated nature of work of steel structures in Heavy Industries, it is essential to customize such work. Therefore it is suggested to use such methods for the mass production of steel structures on time and hence lot of time could be saved in heavy duty steel industries.

Resumen
The course of Anatomy and Histology is studied in the first year of Dentistry at the University Cardenal Herrera CEU (Alfara del Patriarca, Spain). Its practices consist on choose freely six samples and draw their most representative features. These practices were made by optical microscopy until 2014, and in 2015 was introduced the virtual microscope exclusively. The aim of the study is to test whether this new teaching method has improved the quality of exercise and the understanding shown by students. First, the best exercises of both years were chosen, and from them some drawings from the same tissue were compared. Some tissues which samples for optical microscope were hard to obtain, were drawn for the very first time thanks to the virtual microscope. Also, with the virtual microscopy the drawings contained more details and definition. The understanding of the structures improved, shown by a more functional, detailed and defined vision of the tissues. The labels of the virtual microscope helped to the self-study and avoided the loss of unnoticed structures. In conclusion, replacement of optical microscope by the virtual microscope is a teaching improvement and facilitates student learning.

Resumen
<p>Within joint venture De Groene Boog, BESIX will design and construct a 2.2 km long tunnel in the North of Rotterdam for a new highway connection. Its design process entails the structural design of many similar tunnel sections and thousands of foundation and sheet piles, as well as the production of a detailed 3D Building Information Model and numerous technical drawings. To effectively perform these tasks and efficiently cope with design changes, an automation strategy has been developed that benefits from the tunnel’s repetitive geometry. The digital models are set up parametrically, while software innovations allow to dynamically transfer data between and combine the strengths of multiple software packages. Through standardization we aim to automate structural calculations and drawing production.</p><p>This paper will present the proposed automation strategy for the ongoing design process of the tunnel and will evaluate its benefit during the detailed design phase compared to traditional methods. The present project forms the first application of parametric design and automation of such magnitude being developed in-house at the BESIX Engineering Department. It reflects our ambition to use these techniques for tackling the ever increasing challenges within the construction industry and simultaneously boosting productivity and the quality of the final product.</p>

Resumen
Abstract Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), due to the inherent complexity, is a challenging topic to teach and learn, especially at the undergraduate freshman level. Many institutes either cover GD&T on a superficial level or choose to overlook it. Incorporating such a broad subject in an already busy curricula remains a major challenge for many academic institutes, including ours. The knowledge and skill level of our students in GD&T at the beginning of their co-op is a major concern for several employers. These employers have to expend significant resources to train our students and graduates. To address this growing concern, a practical project was incorporated into a freshman introductory engineering course; a Ryobi hedge trimmer Model No. RY39500 was utilized. The students were divided into five groups, and each group was given a mechanical component from the assembly. First, each group was tasked with taking the necessary measurements to create a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of their component in an effort to commence the reverse engineering process. The CAD model was then additively manufactured using fused deposition modeling. A detailed drawing of each component was created and GD&T concepts and symbols were applied to the drawing following ASME/ANSI Y14.5-2009 standards. The project was very well received by the students. It enhanced their understanding and skills necessary to implement GD&T concepts and symbols both in practice and in preparing engineering drawings. The 3-D printed parts were shared among the groups and the manufactured parts were fit together to replicate the real life assembling.

Resumen
Modern technological advances have enabled digital automated methods to be applied for accurate and detailed documentation. Such techniques include image based modelling and terrestrial laser scanning. They can easily be adapted to perfectly suit the documentation needs for small and large objects. In this paper the digital geometric documentation of two medieval fortifications using such contemporary methods is briefly described. These are the western part of the Castle of Chios and an important part of the medieval Rhodes fortifications. The purpose of the geometric documentation for both cases was the restoration of these parts, hence detailed documentation was necessary. Conventional two-dimensional plans with digital orthophotographs were produced and from them conventional line drawings were required for the case of Chios castle. Both castle parts included cylindrical bastions, whose projection on two dimensional plans is obviously deformed. Such non-planar parts constitute a special challenge for the geometric documentation. To solve this problem the three-dimensional digital documentations of these parts were developed by using suitable development routines. Thorough presentation of all considerations for these developments are presented and the implementations are briefly described. The results of these developments are evaluated for their usefulness, accuracy, and efficiency as digital documentation products.

Abstract: The object of study of this research is the not built residential project designed by Le Corbusier in 1942 for a farm near Cherchell, Algeria. From the drawings that constitute the existing graphic documentation of this proposal, this study based its interest in describing the project as an open process of architectural reflection on the idea of the house within a bounded enclosure. A detailed analysis of the different mechanisms and project themes used by the architect through the developing of new interpretive drawings of the original documentation. In this way the invariants and different versions that built the development of the proposal are present. Finally we conclude with a critical synthesis where we relate the architectural areas studied with similar solutions from Le Corbusier works and paradigmatic examples of the architectural scene. Resumen
Designing forged gears with constrained involute tooth profile is a time-consuming activity with high costs due to the complexity in the plastic deformation, machine limitations, and trial-error iterative methods used to design dies and develop process conditions. Recently, knowledge-based systems are proving to be a powerful tool and a great potential for developing intelligent design support systems to improve quality of products and reduce costs by eliminating or minimizing many of the trail-error iterations involved in process design. This paper describes research work in developing a knowledge-based gear design and manufacturing system that assists des igners to reduce the time needed to design precision forged solid gears and provide detailed process specification along with the required process model implemented in it. The system integrates knowledge about all aspects of gear design and manufacturing and provides powerful reasoning and decision-making capabilities for reducing the time between detailed design and final production. Once the user specifies the basic design requirements, the system automatically carries out geometric calculations and strength analysis according to American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) standards, power rating and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based techniques. With a successful power rating achieved, the system automatically feeds input parameters into the GEARFORGING program and carries out process planning for the gear forging process. Estimation of the number of preforming stages required, generation of detail die drawings, geometric parameters, and estimation of forging load and energy requirements of the process are calculated based on available material design databases, knowledge-based rules and feature-level calculations. The system generates the whole forging process from the billet to the final gear product. The results have been compared with those available in the current literature and good agreement has been demonstrated.

Resumen
With the recent identification of the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in addition to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, Indiana’s Department of Transportation (INDOT) has become concerned with ensuring the adequate seismic performance of their bridge network. While INDOT made an effort to reduce the seismic vulnerability of newly-constructed bridges, many less recent bridges still have the potential for vulnerability. Analyzing these bridges’ seismic vulnerability is a vital task. However, developing a detailed dynamic model for every bridge in the state using information from structural drawings is rather tedious and time-consuming. In this study, we develop a simplified dynamic assessment procedure using readily-available information from INDOT’s Bridge Asset Management Program (BIAS), to rapidly identify vulnerable bridges throughout the state. Eight additional data items are recommended to be added into BIAS to support the procedure. The procedure is applied in the Excel file to create a tool, which is able to automatically implement the simplified bridge seismic analysis procedure. The simplified dynamic assessment procedure and the Excel tool enable INDOT to perform seismic vulnerability assessment and identify bridges more frequently. INDOT can prioritize these bridges for seismic retrofits and efficiently ensure the adequate seismic performance of their assets.

Resumen
This paper analyzes extractive industries in Colombia and their connections to other economic activities in the country. We use detailed social security data on all formal employees to create an industry-relatedness measure using labor flows between industries. Drawing on the vast network analysis literature, we exploit centrality measures to reveal the importance of the extractive sector among Colombian industries. Our results show that extractive industries are well connected within the Colombian industrial network, and that they are central overall and within their clusters. We also find that extractive industries have stronger linkages with manufacturing and agriculture than with other sectors. Finally, a higher relatedness to extractive activities is correlated with lower levels of employment, specially of female workers.

Resumen
Nigeria faces immense internal security challenges, including the Boko-Haram crisis in the northeast and violent farmer-herder conflicts in the southwest and north-central states. Across the Nigerian federation, pockets of violent clashes have sprung and escalated in new locales in the last decade. Community responses to these violent crises have been diverse and included the establishment of armed groups to supplement or act in parallel to the security efforts of the Nigerian state—in some cases with backing from federal or state governments. These local security assemblages, community-based armed groups (CBAGs), are on the one hand contributors to local order, and normative conceptions of peace and security. On the other hand, these groups are often a pernicious actor within the broader security landscape, undermining intercommunal peace and drivers of violence and human rights abuses. This Policy Note focuses on the characteristics, challenges, and opportunities of Amotekun, a recently formed CBAG in Southwest Nigeria. Drawing from the experiences of similar Nigerian groups, the Note details recommendations that may facilitate greater success and lessen poten al risk associated with Amotekun’s formation. These recommendations are aimed primarily at Nigerian government and civil society actors and describe areas where external support could potentially improve local capacity to conduct oversight of Amotekun and similar groups.
