V prispevku so predstavljene splošne in fizične geografske danosti območja. Nakazane so nekatere sodobne geopolitične in geostrateške značilnosti območja. Zadnji del prispevka opozarja na vojaškogeografsko razsežnost in pomen Dobrudže zaradi bližine kriznih žarišč in nestabilnosti obrobja Črnega morja. We are presenting Dobrogea, a geographical region in south-eastern part of Europe with important military geographical, geostrategic and geopolitical characteristics. These are determined by the proximity of crisis areas, occasional international frictions in the wider Danube Basin, historical heritage and geostrategic importance. The article presents general and physical geographic resources of the area. It illuminates the development of spatial structures which decisively impact the geo- traffic situation of the region. The main part of the article presents Dobrogea as a battlefield with operational dimensions, and the participation of Slovenians in World War I battles and operations in eastern and south-eastern battlefields. It points to some of the contemporary geopolitical and geostrategic characteristics of the region. The final part of the article, however, brings attention to the military geographical dimension and the importance of Dobrogea due to the proximity of crisis areas and instabilities of the Black Sea fringe.

Resumen
The geochemistry of rhyolites uncovered at shallow depth by a borehole on the Kiliya-Zmeinyi uplift of the Black Sea northwestern shelf northeast of Zmeinyi island, in the junction zone of the East European platform and the Scythian plate, has been studied for the first time. This zone is considered by many geologists and geophysicists as a Late Paleozoic collisional suture that had been formed due to subduction of oceanic crust of the ocean, which adjoined the East European platform from the south, under the Scythian plate; it is traced from Dobrudzha to the Caspian Sea and named North Crimean. To check the subduction nature of the boundary between the East European platform and the Scythian plate, igneous rocks’ geochemical characteristics beeng indicators of various geodynamic regimes were used. A petrogeochemical comparison of rhyolites from the borehole in Zmeinyi area with acid igneous rocks known nearby has been carried out, namely with: 1) Late Permian subalkaline granites and rhyolites Turcoaia of the Macin zone of Northern Dobruja; 2) Triassic and / or Triassic-Jurassic trachyrhyolites and rhyolites of the Tulcea zone of Northern Dobruja and the Tatarbunar complex of the Pre-Dobruja depression. Some acid rocks of various ages and genesis from the southernmost margin of the Scythian plate (southwestern Crimea on- and offshore) were taken additionally for comparison. According to the distribution of rare earth elements, the position on the discriminant geochemical diagrams and the shape of curves on the multicomponent spider diagrams, the rhyolites of the Kiliya-Zmeinyi uplift exhibit not subduction but intraplate geochemical features closest to those of granites and rhyolites Turcoaia of the Macin zone of Northern Dobruja. Considering that the latter are reputed to be Late Permian, one can assume the same age for the rhyolites from the borehole in Zmeinyi area. Taking into account section features, geophysical information and geochemical similarity of magmatism, Kiliya-Zmeinyi uplift of the northwestern shelf seems to be a continuation of the Northern Dobruja structure into the Black Sea; it was a part of the hypothetical Late Paleozoic Euxinian orogen near its northern boundary. An absence of subduction geochemical properties in the studied presumably Late Permian rhyolites indicates that the junction zone of the East European platform and the Scythian plate in the Ukrainian shelf area is not a Late Paleozoic suture, but rather represents a thrust of the Euxinian orogen.

Resumen
Abstract The study of loess and loess-like deposits in Romania has developed considerably, over the years. C14 dating determined that the last three glaciations (Mindel, Riss, Würm) and, at least, two interglacial periods were recorded in the Dobrudja Plateau. Five other paleosol layers indicate the succession of the Quaternary interglacial stations. The loess of Dobrudja, is about 50 m in thickness. The term loess-scape is comprised of all the processes and forms specific to these deposits, which create a unique landscape, with local peculiarities. Natural and anthropic conditions created loessoid microforms (clastokarst) specific to the Dobrudja Plateau. The friability of loess-like deposits, the heavy rains, the lack of vegetation, the existence of a steep slope and of a low basic level, led to the development of a marginal (border) clastokarst on the western and northern side of the plateau (on the right of Danube bank). The aim of this study is to rename the microforms specific to loess-like deposits and to highlight new ones: solution clastic dolines, collapse clastic dolines, clastic resurgences (intermittent karst springs), piping clastic glacis, collapse clastic glacis, proluvial clastic glacis, clastic micro-waterfalls with clastic micro-cauldrons, clastokarstic curtains (drapes), and so on. Consequently, the loess-scape in the Dobrudja Plateau is distinct, just like the karstic, volcanic, glacial landscape, and so on. New clastokarstic microforms were highlighted and efforts were made to establish a proper terminology.

Resumen
The volume includes an anthology of research from the publications of the Bucharest Sociological School regarding the history of interbellum colonization of Dobrudja, with a focus on Aromanians – resources otherwise difficult to find for contemporary readers. The texts provide a rich historical perspective, previously unpublished materials and suggestive details concerning the adventures of Aromanians caught in the rollercoaster of interbellum colonization of Dobrudja. The dataset generated through this volume is highly relevant for advances in sociological methodology, documenting the outlining, decades before its centrality in global literature, of a novel approach – the action research, a productive combination of demands for scientific neutrality and axiological involvement (Bradbury and Reason, 2003).

Resumen
The first cultural influences come out in Dobruja together with the appearance of the first German colonists, beginning from 1840 till 1891. The colonization process develops itself in three stages and colonies in places like Tulcea, Malcoci, Almagea, Ciucurova, Cogealac, Tariverde, M. Kog?lniceanu and others set up as a result. The German population has created an original culture, an ethnic and spiritual communication being deeply set up, but at the same time a communication struck by the specific conditions imposed by the history of this south-eastern European area. On the other side, the Turkish invasion of Dobruja started earlier, in 1388, when it was actually defeated by Mircea cel B?trân. In 1393 the Turks succeeded in taking Dobruja and Silistra, but in 1404 Micea cel B?trân re-conquered the greatest part of these regions. Many Turkish and Tartars moved into Dobruja during the long period of Ottoman rule. The 19th century ethnographic maps show a mainly Turkish population in the area of modern day Dobruja, Tartars and Turks in the southern part of Dobruja and Romanians dominating the north of Dobruja. The paper aims at presenting aspects regarding these two different identities and cultures which are to be found in Dobruja, as well as their integration process within the Romanian Dobrujan modern society.

Resumen
The cordaitaleans are an important plant group in the Westphalian and Stephanian (Bashkirian, Moscovian and Kasimovian) of the Dobrudzha Basin. Small fragments of Cordaites leaves from bore cores are difficult to classify, therefore cuticular analysis has been used in their study. As a result five new species have been erected: Cordaites mogilishtianus, Cordaites makedonkanus, Cordaites dobrudzhanus, Cordaites vraninoensis and Cordaites gurkovoensis. Three species from the Bohemian Massif, namely Cordaites idae, C. schatzlarensis and C. cf. melnicensis also occur in the Dobrudzha Basin. Due to poor preservation, three samples from the Dobrudzha Basin cannot be determined to species and are here described as Cordaites sp. A, Cordaites sp. B and Cordaites sp. C. Most of the Dobrudzha Basin Cordaites belong to the Cordaites cuticular group B (Šimůnek, 2007) which is characterized by single or double stomatal rows on the abaxial cuticle.

Resumen
This paper addresses an aspect of the institutional history of the Muslim community in Romania. It aims to present how the Association of Graduates of the Muslim Seminary in Dobrudja was established and analyze its purpose and activities. The role of the Association is considered from two perspectives. The establishment of the Association was linked to Emel magazine and the group that published it. This group supported the creation of a Crimean Tatar state in Crimea. However, some of its members tried to solve the problems the Turks and the Tatars in Romania faced. In my paper, I explained the role of the Association in the organization system of Islam in Romania. The organization of the Muslim community was established in the first years after the Russo‑Ottoman War of 1877–1878, after which Dobrudja became part of the Romanian state. Thus, an organizational system similar to the Ottoman one continued after this year. Its central institution was the Muftiate, under whose subordination were the Muslim Communities and the Kadiates. The Muslim Seminary held a special place in this system. It was the only educational institution whose role was to train imams and Turkish language teachers of the Turkish and Tatar community in Romania, recognized and supported by local and central authorities. In this sense, the establishment of the Association of Graduates of the Muslim Seminary in Dobrudja was also a response of the Muslim community members to the new political, demographic, and cultural realities.

Resumen
A sensitive topic for decades (for ideological reasons), Dobruja is still a challenge for many Romanian and Bulgarian historians. A peripheral and hardly populated region, this territory lying between the Danube and the Black Sea became the major source of dispute between Bucharest and Sofia at the dawn of the last century. After 1878, legal history and statistics were the pillars of the new identity of this former Ottoman territory di?vided between Romania and Bulgaria, as a result of a decision made by the Great Powers. In order to meet the specific requirements of young national states, Dobruja underwent a colonisation process (whose intensity differed in the two parts of the region). Ethnic diversity caused much concern, particularly in the critical moments that endangered the relations between the two neighbouring countries. The Balkan Wars represented the moment when the Dobruja question officially emerged. Romania?s decision to annex South?ern Dobruja would traumatise Bulgarian society, which would look forward to retaliating. This moment occurred earlier than many Romanian politicians expected. The spirit of revenge explains why the fighting on the Dobrujan front was so intense in the autumn of 1916. Dobruja was the first province of the Romanian Kingdom that fell under the Central Powers? occupation. The documents stored in Romanian archives are too few to make it possible to accurately reconstruct the history of this province during its military occu?pation by the Central Powers. This is not an easy challenge: Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Serbia, Germany, Turkey and Austro-Hungary were in some way involved in the events in Dobruja in the autumn of 1916.

Resumen
The article defines the topicality of the ongoing study of the collection “Rare books with bookplates, inscriptions, and marginalia with the name of Fedir Vovk” from the Library Fund of the National Museum of the Ukrainian History as the source base for ethnology, ethnography, local lore, and Ukrainian studies. It characterizes the object of the research – Fedir Vovk’s scholarly investigation of Ukrainians in Dobrudja (the historical and geographical region between the Lower Danube and the central part of the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria and Romania), which he conducted during his forced political emigration to Romania in the 1880s. The research is performed by the de visu method and based on two main sources – rare books, including the monograph “Transdanubian Sich (local memoirs and stories)” (1883) and the article “Ukrainian Fishery in Dobrudja” (1899). The research tasks that combine Ukrainian and book studies are based on the relevance of the discussion and its interdisciplinary sense. It has been generalized that the past of the Ukrainian community of Dobrudja can be illustrated in a certain diversity of its history and traditions, although relying on a very narrow historiographical basis besides Fedir Vovk’s research. It has been observed that Fedir Vovk did not only dedicate almost 10 years of his scholarly work to the search, collection, and preservation of the historical memory of his compatriots abroad but also aimed to find the traces of Zaporizhzhian Cossacks military (administrative) centers to study their memory about homeland, way of life, and traditions in a new complex local geographical, social, and political context. The article outlines the research prospects in the context of the mission set by bibliologists, historians, and experts in Ukrainian studies to develop “Professor F. Vovk’s Memory Department”, which was founded in the 1920s by his associates and suspended by the Great Terror.

AbstractLarge numbers of Aromanian immigrants in Southern Dobruja joined the fascist Legion of the Archangel Michael during the early 1930s. Deterritorialised by population transfers and state-building in Greek Macedonia, they reterritorialised themselves as ethnic Romanians ‘coming home’ to colonise Southern Dobruja. This article situates the Aromanian turn to fascist politics within the problems they faced during migration. It argues that Aromanians used fascism to assert their identities as Romanians and to claim ethnic privileges that had been denied them as immigrants.

Resumen
In July 2020 we analyzed the terrestrial isopod assemblages from different (mostly abandoned) railway constructions in Dobruja, eastern Romania. We identified 10 terrestrial isopod species, of which the most abundant and frequent were Porcellionides pruinosus (Brandt, 1833) and Armadillidium vulgare Latreille, 1804. We identified species that, in Romania, are present only in Dobruja: Leptotrichus pilosus Dollfus, 1905 and Trachelipus squamuliger (Verhoeff, 1907). Most of the species are common, generalist or synanthropic, connected to dry and open habitats. In abandoned railway-stations the number of species/samples was low (at most two), but at the base of a stone railway bridge in Babadag forest six species were found.

Resumen
Most of the specimens of Corynepteris collected from the Dobrudzha Coalfield sequence are small parts of pinnae. Two species – C. angustissima and C. coralloides predominate. The habitat of Corynepteris had been studied for a long time. The genus occurs in several units of clastic sediments deposited under fluviatile conditions across the prospected part of the depression, but is absent above the coal seam m9 (middle Bolsovian). When the swamp conditions were restored briefly (coal seams n1–n4) or for a longer time (Gurkovo Formation) the genus did not resettle in the depression. The nearest basin with the genus Corynepteris presented at that time is in the Czech Republic, more than 800 km away, which was too far for an effective reintroduction of the genus to the Dobrudzha Coalfield. Spores of the genus range up into the Westphalian D coal seam n3.

In the Dobrudzha Coalfield, mariopterids are found frequently. They are creeping plants associated with flood plain sediments. The changes in architecture and species composition are clearly connected with variations in rain falls and the onset of periods of long, dry conditions. The article reviews military missions of 16th border battalion during First World War. It starts in the 1916 in Dobrudja, then during the period 1916 – 1917 conducts operations in Romania and in 1918 at Macedonian front. In two years, in campaigns and battles, the company traveled over 2000 km. There is no other border formation with such a long battle route. The various geographical conditions for conducting the combat operations, the different enemies and combat tasks require the battalion to use various tactical options, which is not typical for the regular military formations. A unique combat experience has been gained that has not been studied for more than 100 years.

Resumen
Tandonia kusceri (H. Wagner) is a terrestrial slug native to the Balkan Peninsula (S. Serbia, N. Macedonia, Bulgaria and Dobrudja region of Romania) and the European part of Turkey. In Serbia, it was known mostly from the southern regions. The northernmost locality (Palić settlement, near Subotica) reported here suggests that the slug’s distribution is nearly continuous from its native range until Slovakia. The new record was first recognised from the pictures posted on a Facebook group for insect identification in 2021. The identification was subsequently confirmed by anatomical examination. This further emphasises the importance of social media in monitoring the spread of invasive invertebrates.

Resumen
Southeast Europe has played an important role in shaping the genetic diversity of sheep due to its proximity to the Danubian route of transport from the Near East into Europe, as well as its possible role as a post-domestication migration network and long tradition of sheep breeding. The history of Romania and, in particular, the historical province of Dobruja, located on the shore of the Black Sea, has been influenced by its geographical position at the intersection between the great powers of the Near East and mainland Europe, with the Middle Ages being an especially animated time in terms of trade, migration, and conflict. In this study, we analyzed the mitochondrial control region of five sheep originating from the Capidava archaeological site (Dobruja, Southeast Romania), radiocarbon dated to the Early Middle Ages (5–10th century AD), in order to better understand the genetic diversity of local sheep populations and human practices in relation to this particular livestock species. The analyses illustrate high haplotype diversity in local medieval sheep, as well as possible genetic continuity in the region. A higher tendency for North to South interaction, rather than East to West, is apparent, together with a lack of interaction along the Asian route. Continuous interaction between the First Bulgarian Empire, which occupied Dobruja starting with the 7th century AD, and the Byzantine Empire is indicated. These results might suggest expanding trade in Southeast Romania in the Early Middle Ages.

Resumen
The festivals in honor of Jupiter, celebrated in the Roman province of Lower Moesia, have not been studied extensively. Fourteen precisely dated Latin inscriptions have been analyzed for this purpose. The 13th of June is defined as a fixed feast in the calendar of vicus Quintionis, and probably to one more village in Northern Dobruja. Most of the monuments were dedicated on different days and it is impossible to determine whether they were consecrated on a holiday in honor of the god. Some villages in Dobruja, such as vicus Secundini, vicus Clementiani and vicus classicorum performed regular, perhaps even annual dedications to Jupiter, but the day of the consecration of the altars is not specified in the inscriptions. The cyclic recurrence of this act presupposes observance of a certain holiday calendar with a fixed festival of Jupiter.

Resumen
After 1990, nature conservation areas multiplied all over Central and Eastern Europe. National parks came into being as part of a dramatically changing society, economy, and culture. Scholarly efforts to understand national parks rely either on arguments about the social construction of nature or on political ecology. In this article, I attempt to point to the analytical potential of the literature on ruins for expanding studies carried out in both theoretical traditions. I draw from fieldwork in nature conservation areas in southeastern Romania to explore how actors gain access to critical discourses and complex ways of narrating and enrolling the landscapes. The mechanisms that counterpoise safeguarding and development are analyzed as parts of a longue durée articulation of ruination and modernization.

Resumen
The end of the age of revisionism – 1945 in the journal Carkoven vestnikThe main purpose of this article is to show a Bulgarian political and cultural memorial space from the perspective of the Orthodox Church, which is emblematic for the Second World War. In my work I analyse publications which appeared in the journal Carkoven vestnik between 1940 and 1944 concerning the religious, historical, political and social issues of the time. It is not my intention to deal with the religiosity of the Bulgarian people during this difficult period, even though the source material would suggest it. The idea is to reconstruct the attitudes of the Orthodox Church to the main contemporary ideologies and policies pursued by government of Tsar Boris III. I analyse the position of the Orthodox Church, which on the one hand stresses its role as the spiritual centre of Bulgarian society, and on the other as an institution serving national interests. I pay particular attention to the role of the „Great Bulgaria” myth and the age of revisionism, nurtured in the Church, in context of German assistance in regaining the territories lost after the First World War and Balkan wars. I present a detailed historical record of the annexation of Dobruja. All studies are placed in the broad social and cultural context of the age, as well as the context of local cultural texts. I base my analysis on the typology of Eric Voegelin, who showed Gnostic political influences in his works The New Science of Politics and Hitler und die Deutschen. Koniec epoki rewizjonizmu – rok 1945 w publikacjach gazety „Църковен вестник”Na łamach gazety „Църковен вестник”, będącej oficjalnym organem Bułgarskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej, w czasie II wojny światowej publikowano teksty o treściach wyraźnie inspirowanych ideologią narodowosocjalistyczną, jednoznacznie wskazujące na polityczne zaangażowanie, wiążące interesy Cerkwi i państwa.

The paper presents the results obtained in the study of new archaeometric and chemometric characteristics involved in the authentication of old artefacts made of metal, ceramics and polychrome wood, by the Iasi school of Conservation Science of cultural heritage goods. Most of the metal and ceramic artefacts considered for this study originate from archaeological sites from the region of Moldavia and Dobrudja, and those of polychrome wood from state or private collections and monastic establishments. The data obtained, using modern experimental methods and techniques, has allowed us to set the fundaments of phenomenological aspects related to the conception/execution, acquired patina, evolutive effects of deterioration and degradation, historical contexts, etc. These discoveries have been acknowledged as interdisciplinary effects, as evidenced by the citations listed in scientometric databases.

Dobrudjea Plateau, located in south-east Romania, is characterized by low altitudes, old rocks, a temperate-continental climate and a silvosteppe and steppe vegetation. Pubescent oak is one of the tree species characteristic for this area. With average dimensions, this tree fulfils numerous ecosystem functions. The concept of “Climate-Smart Forestry – CSF” is recent and was adapted in this article for the pubescent oak characteristic for this area; clear and measurable criterions were also identified and applies for this species in order to identify the smart stands. Smart pubescent oak forests represent 3% of all this specie’s stands and are more common in the north part of Dobrudjea Plateau. They are characterized by advanced ages (61-70 years), 20%-30% compositions and even-aged structures. The forests are located on relatively small distances from forest roads, at altitudes of 100m - 250 m, and on west and east expositions. The present study has showed that smart pubescent oak forests can be established by taking into account 14 site (flora, soil or forest type) and stand conditions (pruning, vitality, average diameter and height, functional group and category, litter). The identification of these stands is extremely important for their protection as well as for applying the appropriate silvicultural measures.

Resumen
Bu çalışma, Romanya'nın Dobruca Bölgesi Mankalya şehrinde bulunan Esma Sultan Camii haziresinde bulunan mezar taşı kitabelerinin çözümlemesini içermektedir. XVI.

AbstractThe process of assigning the place for Jews in the Romanian nation code and for (Albanian) Muslims in the Serbian one is analyzed as Orientalistic. While the Great Powers served as role models in the Romanian and Serbian identity construction, these principal Others were represented as uncivilized and non-European, preventing the nation-states from their European destiny. This discursive construction of the nation in major debates is identified as a first step which was followed by policy recommendations from intellectuals and actual attempts to fulfill the dream of an ethnically homogenous nation-state. This sequence's latter parts are represented by a number of case studies, such as citizenship regulations in the Constitution and other laws, the possibilities for representing political interests and cultural rights for Jews and Muslims, colonization projects in Kosovo and Dobrudja, and measures to “protect Romanian labor”.

Resumen
The article covers the position of Bulgaria, which found itself at the cross-roads of geopolitical interests of Germany and the Soviet Union in the initial period of the Second world war and was forced to employ the tactics of maneuvering and dragging its heels choosing its strategic partner and ally. Having declared complete and consistent neutrality, Bulgarian leadership in practice tended to turn the country into a «Pro-German» unit, which was greatly facilitated by the assistance of Berlin in the transfer of Southern Dobrudja to Bulgaria. In addition to the willingness of the German leadership to guarantee territorial increments of Bulgaria, Sofia's position was to a great extent influenced by the fear of Bolshevism and the so-called «Baltic scenario» implemented by that time. Bulgaria's entry into the Triple Pact in March of 1941 meant that the USSR lost the diplomatic battle for Bulgaria.

Resumen
The Bolsovian to Cantabrian sediments in the Dobrudzha Coal Field are about 800 m thick. They were deposited in a depression bounded to the east, south and west by active synsedimentary faults. Most of the succession is coal-bearing clay- and siltstones, including occasional lacustrine deposits with fresh water faunas (molluscs and ostracods). Basin-wide sandstone intervals are associated with two periods of erosion and non-sequence. There are also localized sandstone bodies with vitrinized plant remains associated with the basin-margin faults. Conglomerates are only thin and rarely developed, and pebbles are only rarely found in the sandstones. There are only three basin-wide coals (m5 at the middle Makdonka Formation, n1 at the base of the Krupen formation and p3 in the middle Gurkovo Formation) representing times of diminished influx of clastic sediment, and thus of reduced movement along the basin-margin faults. Based on the depth of the erosive down-cutting, it is estimated that the elevation of the basin was at least 180 m above sea-level. The area surrounding the basin is supposed to be an alluvial plain covered with vegetation and swamps. The dense vegetation cover suggests periods of high precipitation, whereas dry conditions with active weathering are most probable during deposition of the Velkovo Formation. Volcanic activity occurred near to the depression, perhaps related to the boundary faults. In the stratigraphically highest part of the succession (the Kabalak Member), volcaniclastics are the main component of the detritic sediments. The basin eventually inverted to become a horst around which Permian sediments were deposited.
