Resumen
This essay analyzes the film Ratas, Ratones, Rateros (1999), by Ecuadorian director Sebastián Cordero, as a reflection of the social problems that affect contemporary Ecuador. Through a textual analysis of the work, it is examined how the main characters, two cousins who are dedicated to theft and crime, represent the Creole liveliness, social resentment and corruption that are some of the characteristic features of Ecuadorian society. Likewise, the film is contextualized with the political and economic scenario of the country at the end of the nineties, marked by the banking crisis, dollarization and government instability. The conclusion to be reached is that Ecuadorian cinema, more than a nationalist art, functions as a mirror of daily reality; as a reflection of the identity and social problems of Ecuadorians.

Resumen
Magnolia crassifolia Arroyo & Pérez in Arroyo et al. (2013: 501) is a South American species known only from the type collection, which comes from primary forest found in the Ecuadorian province of Zamora Chinchipe, near the Peruvian-Ecuadorian border. However, it is an illegitimate later homonym of M. crassifolia Göppert (1852: 277), a fossil taxon described on the basis of leaf impressions found in Silesia, Germany. Therefore, the south American species requires a new name (Art 6. 11 of the ICN, McNeill et al. 2012), which is proposed below.

Resumen
When the development of Ecuadorian national art music began at the end of the nineteenth century, composers and music historians followed European models and studied folklore as a window onto the past. In this quest to discover and articulate what was truly “Ecuadorian,” Incan culture occupied a complex position, sometimes hailed as a primary component of Ecuador’s musical heritage and sometimes dismissed as irrelevant. This article explores the music histories written by composers Pedro Pablo Traversari, Segundo Luis Moreno, and Sixto María Durán, and investigates a selection of Traversari’s compositions and Moreno’s music analyses. It demonstrates how they either included Incan culture in or excluded it from a national music history, in dialogue with scholars outside Ecuador. Early twentieth-century musical discourse in Ecuador produced a series of conflicting and converging perspectives on national and continental music that contribute to our understanding of the global history of nationalistic art musics.

Resumen
The application of hydraulic fracturing in geothermal reservoirs requires the con- sideration of aspects related to temperature, geology, and in-situ stresses. This research com- pares the application of hydraulic fracturing for geothermal purposes in Rotliegend sand- stones of sedimentary origin in the North German Basin with that of a Granodiorite reservoir in the Pohang site in South Korea. Furthermore, some recommendations are proposed for the application of hydraulic fracturing in Ecuadorian plays for thegeneration of geothermal en- ergy. The basement reservoirs have a hard structure and are prone to pre-existing natural fractures, especially in reservoirs for geothermal purposes, because they normally have active tectonism due to their location. In contrast, sedimentary reservoirs are not necessarily in areas with active tectonism and their more ductile structure does not make them prone to natural fractures, but their temperature gradient should be analyzed to verify their feasibility. The stress analysis, the coefficient of fracture conductivity (FCD), the Folds of Increase (FOI) and the temperature gradient are complementary factors for determining the economic via- bility of geothermal reservoirs. Consequently, the application of hydraulic fracturing in geo- thermal reservoirs requires the analysis of Sv (overburden) stress, Sh1 (horizontal 1) stress, Sh2 (horizontal 2) stress, temperature, FCD, and FOI. This is particularly true for the Chachimbiro Ecuadorian geothermal reservoir, where there is high temperature and active tectonism.

Resumen
The spontaneous and traditional art represents one of the most important aspects in the culture of a town because it is the worldview manifestation that shows cultural reality in areas that are considered socially subaltern. This is the case of the Ecuadorian Andean region, where the ancestral sound of capolin leaves shows a historical experience and a particular sensitivity. Capolin is a leafy tree native from America. It has simple, alternate, oblongo laceolate leaves that are 6 to 14cm long by 2 to 4 cm wide. It has 3 to 5 prominent nerves from the base of the leaf. This musical technique is part of the Ecuadorian culture and has been inherited and transmitted from a remote past and at the same time is a resource with high cultural vulnerability. When talking about the research work it is worth adding that a descriptive study was carried out. It encompasses the representative cultural features of the plant in the population and the fundamental dendrolgical characteristics. The study also goes through the frecuency and the decibels created by the sound of the plant, the intonation and the human effect caused by this sound. The research concludes that the transversal axis of music is creativity and that boosting this type of manifestations can be a motivation for the dynamization of the touristic activity because it is part of the intangible heritage of a town.

Resumen
The use of the state-of-art information and communication technology has been found to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry and many countries have chosen to implement smart tourism tools as a strategy to adapt to the continuously changing profile of tourists. While there are many tools which could be implemented for such endeavors, the evaluation of the tourist preferences in relation to their use and importance needs to be done so as to ensure at least the sustainability of investments and of the local development strategies. The Chimborazo Fauna Reserve (canton of Riobamba, Ecuador) was selected for the application of a questionnaire survey to evaluate the importance of 38 smart tourism tools based on the experience of Ecuadorian and international tourists with them. The survey considered more than 700 respondents and 500 valid questionnaires were retained for analysis which was done mainly by developing distributions of the relative frequencies of ratings given on a 5-point Likert scale and by a correspondence analysis at the level of two subsamples: national and international tourists. There were obvious differences between these two groups in terms of importance placed on the smart tourism tools. The first difference was that the Ecuadorian tourists found less utility in the smart tools as compared to the international tourists. The second difference was that the best rated tools in terms of importance were different among the two groups, with the international tourists placing, for instance, more importance on safety-related tools. Correspondence analysis has shown the similarities of profiles and data association, being a useful tool of associating the ratings to the evaluated tools. The knowledge gained by the survey may be helpful in supporting the development of local tourist strategies, providing at the same time valuable data to support preference comparisons with other tourist destinations and countries.

Resumen
Healthcare services are evolving towards the consideration of comprehensive models of the human being. This is consistent with the definition of health as the state of complete “physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”, as affirmed in the Constitution of the World Health Organization. Also pertinent in the educational programs of health professionals are the concepts formulated by De Sousa in his work, “El Arte de Cambiar las Personas que Cambian las Cosas” (The Art of Changing People who Change Things). His recommendations promote a comprehensive training of the healthcare team, with a vision of training the best talented individuals to serve as health-care professionals. Imbued with these viewpoints, the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja is developing a new School of Nursing with a humanistic vision. The proposal is designed to reflect key tenets of person-centered care, including interaction with the community, collaboration between the nurse and the doctor and with others members of the healthcare team. The focus is on the patient, including self-care and the participation of family members in order to achieve the desired outcomes. The proposed educational methodology promotes the cultivation of self-esteem as a cross-cutting issue. This contributes to a paradigmatic shift towards total personal development and humane and social professional practice.

Resumen
As the pandemic spread, several studies have warned about the repercussions on the emotional, mental and physical health of individuals. The project aimed to explore the influence of consumption and artistic practice on the feeling of health and well-being during the pandemic in the Ecuadorian towns of Manta, Guayaquil, and Quito. The project understands health as an integral state of well-being. From this point of view, art is considered essential to obtain this status. The project adopted a mixed methodology, with an exploratory scope and a non-experimental design. Appraisals were made of the variables (1) consumption and practice of art and (2) subjective well-being. In the absence of a tool, an ad hoc questionnaire was created and applied online. The project found that, inthese cities, the majority of people increased their artistic consumption and practice during the pandemic. The influence of art on human well-being was tested during the study. Art education is recommended as a means to obtain a greater sense of well-being and subjective appreciation of art in the long term. Resumen
The contribution of the Ecuadorian forest industry to the development of the country is of undeniable importance since it enables job creation, the production of goods and services, and the generation of wealth. As such, special attention should be paid to the problems that are affecting its development and that prevent enhancing the competitiveness of the companies in this important productive sector of the country. This review of the international literature found in relevant databases synthesizes findings on the forest wealth of Ecuador vs. deforestation. We also provide an overview on the state-of-art technology in timber harvesting and the wood processing industry. Within each of these topics, we analyze and discuss some factors such as irrational logging of native forests, incipient afforestation, as well as the elements on primary and secondary transformation of wood in Ecuador. We conclude that the participation and cooperation of all actors in the productive chain of the forestry sector in Ecuador is of the utmost importance to adequately address the demands of the national and international markets.

Resumen
The object of the investigation, as a contribution in the educational axis, anthropological and sociocultural was to describe an ephemeral part of the orality of the Inca people and its importance in current education, whose language, Kichwa, remains as a heritage of the ancestral peoples of South America. It begins by presenting the lineage of Kichwa as a language of imperial rank, highlighting the communicative function of the character called Chasqui. Next, the current presence of Kichwa in the world is commented on, especially in Ecuador and its educational institutions. After that, Kichwa orality is highlighted through its myths, rites, and ancestral legends, as well as its mark on the Seventh Art. The Kichwa terms used in Latin America of the 21st century is addressed. The historical-logical analysis and the dialectical method were used as a methodology to investigate the dialectal variant of Kichwañol in Ecuador. Next, the influence of the “colonized” Kichwa indigenous language in the speaking of Cuenca, a beautiful colonial city in southern Ecuador, is discussed. The result was a reflection on the importance of the Kichwa language as a forger of Ecuadorian identity.

Resumen
Exploring the vast pictorial work of Monsignor Juan Larrea Holguin is challenging for anyone who tries to achieve a good and organized study. The first cause is clear: he used to paint all the time and he did it on any material available; he also used to generously donate his works, so it's very difficult to track them all; the second reason has to do with his paintings being an alternate activity to his priestly work and extensive legal production. It seems that he saw every painting with the half-closed and analytical eyes that are characteristic of a lawyer but, at the same time, with the love professed by the humanist for the Ecuadorian landscapes. This paper shows a facet of this multifaceted man who marks a milestone in the history of the great characters of Ecuador, but at the same time shows an artistic work that deserves to be highlighted in the art field due to its loyalty towards the homeland, its unmistakable style and color management. There is also a curious similarity with the avant-garde trend that marked Juan Larrea’s style, creating a rift between the objectivity of the lawyer and the subjectivity of the artist.

Resumen
Summaryβ‐Lactoglobulin (BLG)‐specific serum IgG antibody was measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay in 1,392 serum samples from newborn to 5‐year‐old Ecuadorian children enrolled into a representative nutrition and health survey. At a 1:100 serum dilution, 62% of the children showed specific antibody (blank‐corrected optical density ≥ 0.1). This prevalence did not change with increasing age. More specifically, we did not observe a prevalence or titer increase of BLG‐specific antibody in age groups where the majority of these Ecuadorian children experienced infection with rotavirus (8–24‐month age groups) and enterotoxigenic Escherichiacoli (8–12‐month age group). In addition, BLG‐specific antibody did not differ between children who did or did not experience an episode of diarrhea 15 days before blood sampling. We observed a small but statistically significant difference in BLG‐specific antibody between subsamples of Ecuadorian children regularly or only occasionally ingesting milk. Titers were higher in the group consuming more milk.

Resumen
This ethnographic field work was carried out in the period 2011-2019 for the completion of the doctoral thesis. It addresses encountering a diversity of conceptions of time, as can be observed in traditional rituals carried out in public spaces. The study analyzes a celebration held in Madrid by three Andean migrant communities (Bolivians, Ecuadorians, and Peruvians). I find that the Inti Raymi festival in Madrid unfolds in a plurality of articulated levels. First, as a space where the Andean countries represent themselves politically with Spanish politics and society. Second, as a space for collective identification for the migrant Andean population of various national identities (Ecuadorian, Bolivian and Peruvian) who recognize a common Andean origin, reinforcing their sense of identity and enhancing their political capacity. This capacity is reinforced by the fact that the Inti Raymi is celebrated both in the places of origin and in the cities of the world with Andean migration. I interpret these spaces from the anthropological political economic perspective (Roseberry, 1991). It also involves a bonding ceremony with Pachamama, the expression of an ever-renewed ancestral spirituality, a world whose consideration requires an onto-epistemological and other methodological approaches (Mignolo 2013): an approach based on an open dialogue (from attentive listening), hermeneutical (through a mutual and horizontal interpretation, which recognizes asymmetries and re-locates differences), transformative and performative (as a result of the same open nature of the dialogue), based on the practice of feeling thought (thinking with and from the heart, incorporating emotions, Escobar, 2014 and Guerrero Arias, 2012).

Resumen
Taking an analytical-descriptive and synthetical approach, this article presents a retrospective construction of the Ecuadorian indigenist school of good living from the current conception of good living as the sumak kawsay currently held by Ecuadorian indigenist intellectuals, assuming that thought on good living evolves within competitive epistemic communities. To that end, the thought on good living of this school has been characterized by nine criteria used in studies of schools of development, the various intellectuals that comprise this school have been identified and grouped into four categories, the institutional and intellectual factors that have contributed to the emergence of this school have been determined, and the main criticisms received and their countercriticism have been summarized.

Resumen
Objective/context: The objective pursued by this research is to analyse the possible existence of a social and political fracture around the figure of former President Rafael Correa and his political legacy, the Citizen Revolution, which would act as a kind of polarizing division of Ecuadorian society: correismo/anti- correismo axis. A division that, born of politics, would have been established within society, allowing the existence of two opposing sides that feel, perceive and act in politics in a very different way. Methodology: To this end, a study has been drawn up with a quantitative methodological approach based on an analysis of the data contained in the Study of Politics and Emotions in Ecuador, March 2021 (SPEE), carried out by the EIP-USC after the first round of the 2021 presidential elections. Conclusions: The results of this first approach (descriptive and multivariate) allow us to affirm the existence of important differences between supporters and detractors of correismo, especially as regards political and emotional issues, but not so regarding sociodemographic issues. Originality: The influence that the emotional factor expressed towards the different political leaders would have in the construction of this fracture is especially relevant; providing a novel vision to the literature on the influence of Rafael Correa and his project in the Ecuadorian political system.

Resumen
AbstractTo explain causality between ethnic consciousness and indigenous political activism in the Andes, scholars have proposed two perspectives. Some argue that ethnic consciousness was pre-existing; others claim that it was the product of political organizational processes. In this study, I demonstrate that the ethnic consciousness of Ecuadorian indigenous Andeans has been a dialogical work-in-progress that has hinged significantly on the emergence of self-conscious cultural performance. I analyze the trajectory from submission to assertiveness of Ecuadorian indigenous Andeans and compare it with the Peruvian and Bolivian cases, focusing on the ways in which performance and performativity have constructed indigeneity as a social reality. Performance implies a bounded act done by a subject who consciously performs, whereas performativity refers to the construction of the subject by the reiteration of norms. The research investigates three interrelated fields that are crucial in the constitution of indigeneity: the performativity of racial and ethnic hierarchies, the performance of indigenous culture during protest, and the performance of indigenous festivities. Considering that social hierarchies are iteratively constructed and that cultural performance is part and parcel of the political redress of cultural difference, I argue that through cultural performance Ecuadorian and Bolivian indigenous Andeans have been able to undermine the ways in which performativity has constituted them as subaltern subjects. This transformation has not happened in the Peru, where indigenous Andeans still feel that indigeneity is a stigmatized condition.

We analyse the determinants of: i) employment and sales growth, and ii) the likelihood of becoming a high-growth firm (HGF) among Ecuadorian firms for the period 2011-2014. We apply a two-stage econometric model that controls for selection bias in the choice to innovate in regards to the two rounds of the Ecuadorian National Innovation Activities Survey. We find that younger firms and firms that spend more on R&D activities per employee have significantly higher levels of employment growth and are significantly more like to become employment HGFs.

Resumen
This paper analyses Carlos Arcos’s novel Memorias de Andrés Chiliquinga (2013) from a transnational perspective. I propose that, by reimagining the indigenous hero of Jorge Icaza’s Huasipungo (1934) and placing him in New York City in the twenty-first century, Arcos delivers a novel that not only challenges the Ecuadorian literary tradition but also defies limited views about the Ecuadorian nation. I focus on the multiple borders the story identifies and crosses to argue that, in his travels, his multilingualism, and his blend of foreign and indigenous cultural traits, the contemporary Andrés Chiliquinga created by Arcos counters purity and homogeneity with mixture and hybridity. In doing so, he lays bare that a key part of what defines the ‘national’ in contemporary Ecuador is precisely its transnationality.

Resumen
The synthesis of titanate nanostructures from low-cost mineral precursors is a topic of continuous interest, considering not only their fundamental aspects but also the benefits of incorporating such nanomaterials in a wide variety of applications. In this work, iron-rich titanate nanosheets were synthesized from Ecuadorian ilmenite sands (ilmenite–hematite solid solution-IHSS) through an alkaline hydrothermal treatment (AHT) using potassium hydroxide (KOH). The effect of the duration of the KOH-AHT was assessed at 180 °C for 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. The morphology evolution over time and the plausible formation mechanisms of titanate nanostructures were discussed. The most significant morphological transformation was observed after 72 h. At this time interval, the titanate nanostructures were assembled into well-defined 3D hierarchical architectures such as book-block-like arrangements with open channels. Based on X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses, it was determined that these nanostructures correspond to iron-rich layered titanates (Fe/Ti mass ratio of 7.1). Moreover, it was evidenced that the conversion of the precursor into layered nanostructures was not complete, since for all the tested reaction times the presence of remaining IHSS was identified. Our experiments demonstrated that the Ecuadorian ilmenite sands are relatively stable in KOH medium.

Invasive ant species are a serious threat to native fauna, especially in highly diverse tropical countries. Therefore, new distribution reports and information on the interactions with other species are essential to understand the potential effects of invasive ants on biodiversity. Here we report for the first time the presence of colonies of Monomorium floricola (Jerdon, 1851) in the nest of the Neotropical social spider Anelosimus eximius (Keyserling, 1884) in the southern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our report extends the known distributional range of M. floricola to the southern Ecuador.

Resumen
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide. AKT1 encodes the kinase B alpha protein. The rs121434592, rs12881616, rs11555432, rs11555431, rs2494732, and rs3803304 single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in the AKT1 kinase gene. Activated AKT1 phosphorylates downstream substrates regulating cell growth, metabolism, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and drug responses. It is essential to know how breast cancer risk is associated with histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics and genotype polymorphisms in a high altitude Ecuadorian mestizo population. This is a retrospective case-control study. DNA was extracted from 185 healthy and 91 affected women who live 2,800 meters above sea level. Genotypes were determined by genomic sequencing. We found a possible association between the noncoding intronic variant rs3803304 and breast cancer risk development: GG (odds ratio [OR] = 5.2; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.3-20.9; P ≤ 0.05; Q > 0.05). Regarding pathologic characteristics, we found significant risk between estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2 status and molecular subtypes (P ≤ 0.001; Q ≤ 0.05). On the other hand, we did not find risk between variants and histopathological characteristics. Despite the small sample size, we found that the intronic variant, AKT1 rs3803304, may act as a predictive biomarker in the risk of developing breast cancer in the high altitude Ecuadorian mestizo population.

un-reddis a Global Forest Governance mechanism that aims to create financial value for the carbon stored in forests while offering incentives to forest inhabitants. This article studies the case ofun-reddin the Ecuadorian Amazon through documentary research and content analysis. The findings show that the initiative conforms with a ‘Washington consensus on Poverty’ that portrays potential aid recipients as unknowledgeable and hence unable to act positively on their environment. As such, the frameworks and perspectives for forest governance of governmental and international institutions are legitimized, and expert knowledge is prioritized for environmental solutions, neglecting that of local people.

Resumen
This article engages with debates concerning the regulation of financial derivatives and, in particular, with the assumption according to which their speculative ‘excesses’ can be effectively curbed so to restore an otherwise healthy system of production, usually the industrial/manufacturing one, endowed with a ‘real’ value separate from that produced by financial markets. Arguing that derivatives complicate such an assumption, the article asks the question of how to act when the ‘value’ they refer to becomes contested. In this respect it explores the potential of the Ecuadorian Proposal for a New Regional Financial Architecture to act in the face of the contestability of value of exchange rates and, in so doing, to represent an alternative to the real/financial economy split and the regulatory debate as carried out so far.

Resumen
Decision-making based on multiple criteria is common in various contexts, recognized for its high complexity in seeking viable solutions. Computer crimes encompass any act with criminal intent that seeks to cause harm or put at risk a legally protected interest using computer tools. This study aims to determine whether residents of Santo Domingo are aware of computer crimes established in Ecuadorian legislation, employing multicriteria evaluation techniques and the TODIM and PROMETHEE methods. These methodologies are complemented by neutrosophic single-value sets, based on neutrosophic logic, to effectively manage the indeterminate and inconsistent information typical in real-world scenarios. In this way, the utility of these techniques for addressing complex problems in daily life and in various social domains is demonstrated.

Resumen
The purpose of the article is to analyze donations inter vivos or irrevocable in Ecuadorian law. A documentary review of inter vivos or irrevocable donations was proposed. By establishing a differentiation between articles 1402 and 1416, it could be found that while in the first article a donation is mentioned as a legal act, in the second it states that a donation cannot be made inter vivos if it is not granted by public deed and registered in the corresponding registry, which gives way to a legal contradiction about the conceptual nature of the donation among the living. The donation among the living is not a legal act, but a contract, since there is a bilateral action. There is an error in the conceptualization that refers to article 1402 of the Civil Code that differs with what was determined in other articles subsequent to the subject matter.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental pollution and the living conditions of indigenous Ecuadorians on the transmission of enteroparasites in an Andean agricultural area located at high altitude. Environmental pollution was recorded after observation in each community. The parasites were identified by microscopic sediment analysis using physiological saline solution from macerated arthropods, washed vegetables, and human stools, utilizing four coproparasitological techniques (direct examination, Kato–Katz, ether concentration, and Ziehl–Neelsen). The results show that the inadequate disposal of human and animal excreta that contaminate soil and water, incorrect food hygiene, inadequate sanitary infrastructure in houses, a lack of animal veterinary care, and rodent proliferation are important reservoirs of zoonotic parasites. The use of excrement as fertilizer increases the number of flies, which act as mechanical vectors, and vegetables grown in areas with disperse infective parasitic forms act as vehicles that are marketed at the local, regional, and international levels. These analyses verify contamination levels of 52.7% in mechanical vectors, 70.6% in vegetables, and 98.2% in human stools. The agricultural communities analyzed maintained poor hygienic–sanitary and environmental conditions, which had a significant influence on the transmission of enteroparasites that affect human health.

Resumen
One of the largest species in its genus, Odontomachus davidsoni Hoenle, Lattke & Donoso, sp. nov. is described from workers and queens collected at lowland forests in the Chocó-Darién bioregion in coastal Ecuador. The workers are characterized by their uniform red coloration, their large size (16–18 mm body length), and their frontal head striation that reaches the occipital margin. DNA barcodes (COI) and high resolution 2D images of the type material are provided, as well as an updated key for the Neotropical species of Odontomachus. In addition, a three-dimensional digital model of the worker holotype and a paratype queen scanned with DISC3D based on photogrammetry is presented, for the first time in a species description. Findings of large and conspicuous new species are uncommon around the world and suggest that these Ecuadorian rainforests may conceal many more natural treasures that deserve conservation.
