Resumen
Over the past century there have been substantial declines in farmland biodiversity as a result of the intensification of agricultural practice. Concerns over these declines have led to the development of agri-environment schemes designed to mitigate the effects of intensive agriculture and to benefit biodiversity. Prior to commencing this thesis it was not clear if flower-rich, pollinator-focused agri-environment schemes had a population level impact on wild bees on farmland. Whilst previous work has shown that the creation of flower-rich habitat can provide suitable foraging resources for bu

This thesis addresses various aspects of the role of competition between European honeybees and wild pollinators on pollinator community structure and pollination services. In experimental studies in flight cages, the presence of foraging honeybees led to a decrease in visitation rate of bumblebees and increased their flower handling time. The travelling rime that bumblebees spent flying between flowers showed a positive relationship with number of honeybees per flower. In a field study, the proximity to a honeybee apiary significantly decreased the abundance of different groups of pollinators

The European honeybee, Apis mellifera, is important economically not just for honey production but also as a pollinator. Bee pollinated plants contribute towards one third of the food eaten worldwide. However, honeybee numbers in some areas are declining. A range of interacting factors are thought to be involved, including pathogens and parasites, loss of forage, pesticide use, bad weather, and limited genetic variability. Pathogens are also known to cause changes in the behaviour of their hosts and these premortality and sublethal effects of disease may well play a role in colony declines and

Conditioning to scented feeders allowed the separation of foraging bees from a single colony into treatment and control groups. Permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate and flucythrinate were shown to be contact repellents to honey bees; exposure was primarily to the tarsi and ventral abdomen. The threshold dose of permethrin required to induce repellency was ca. 3.8 ng/bee. Repellency was fully reversible within 24 hours. No permane

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators of many plant species and are employed globally for crop and honey production. However, little is known about the effects of this species on native pollinator and plant species in areas to which they have been introduced; and previous research has not been able to reach a general consensus as to the type of impact honeybees have on pollination systems. In addition to the effects of exotic pollinators, the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats is also of major concern to the continuing diversity of pollinators and plant populations. Here

Because droneflies do not show particularly close morphological similarity to honeybees, apart possibly in their size, the work has mainly concentrated on aspects of behaviour which may enhance their mimicry. Analysis of model:mimic ratios revealed that dronefly and honeybee numbers were not consistent with what might be expected if Batesian mimicry was operating. It is suggested that droneflies, which out number their models, may still ga

The complex social structure of the honey bee hive has been the subject of inquiry since the dawn of science. Data on bee society remains scarce to this day as no study has managed to comprehensively catalogue all interactions among bees within a single hive. This work aims at developing methodologies for fully automatic tracking of bees and their interactions in infrared video footage. Resumen
Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) is one of the central enzymes in energy metabolism at a branch point at the head of the metabolic pathway leading into glycogen metabolism, pentose shunt and the main glycolytic cycle, catalyzing the reversible interconversion of glucose-1-phosphate to glucose-6-phosphate. Whole year, month to month analysis of pattern of allozyme variation at Pgm and Hk loci in Apis mellifera L. from three provinces
Kirklareli, Artvin, and Hatay revealed that there is significant seasonal variation of allozyme frequencies at Pgm locus (P&lt
0.001). The difference in genotype

Resumen
In an earlier project completed in our laboratory a seasonal fluctuation in Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) phenotype frequencies was found, so that the winter bees were almost all heterozygotes and long lived than the summer bees among which homozygotes were significantly at high frequencies at Pgm locus. Same results were obtained in populations of three subspecies, A. m. meda, A. m. caucasica, and A. m. carnica from different climatic regions. In the current study environmental cues related with seasonal change in PGM phenotype frequency was examined along with the correlation between PGM hetero

Resumen
Defence against predators is fundamental to increasing an organism's fitness. My thesis explores this central theme in behavioural ecology using stingless bees as study organisms. The thesis contains a general introduction (Chapter 1), three data chapters (2-4) and a final discussion (5). Chapter 2 is a comparative study of aggression in nest defence among stingless bee species, and describes a new form of nest defence, suicidal biting, which is most prevalent in the genus Trigona. Chapter 3 describes a remarkable behaviour in Partamona helleri, which crashes head-first when entering its nest.

Resumen
Tasks designed to measure affective state in animals are valuable in researching the aetiology and treatment of affective disorders in humans. However, many traditional measures are ineffective in assessing affective valence, and judgement bias tasks were designed to overcome this problem. In this thesis I aimed to identify whether rats displayed a judgement bias during sickness, and also whether the task outcomes were translatable to an invertebrate species. A comparative study was performed with a vertebrate (rat) and an invertebrate (honeybee) model exposed to toxin-induced sickness. Behavi
