This article is based on my doctoral study of an unpublished manuscript retrieved from the SMNA library titled Kitāb al-Mawāhib al-ʿAliyyah fī al-Jamʿi bayn al-Ḥikam al-Qur’āniyyah wa al-Ḥadīthiyyah written by ‘Alī al-Muttaqī al-Hindī, a sixteenth-century Islamic scholar who authored Kanz al-ʿUmmāl (one of the most extensive Hadith compilations). The manuscript of Kitāb al-Mawāhib is a compendium of one thousand pieces of wisdom. Five hundred of them are from the Qur’an and the rest from the Hadith. This chapter examines the connections between Sicily and other parts of the dār al-Islām during the years of Muslim dominion (ninth to mid-eleventh centuries), when Sicily's ports were most regularly in communication with those of North Africa and Egypt. The largest body of evidence for these connections comes from merchant letters from the Cairo Geniza, which detail trade and migration. The chapter discusses Sicily's intellectual connections with the dār al-Islām, economic connections with Egypt and Ifrīqiya, and connections with the wider Mediterranean world.

Resumen
This chapter suggests that insufficient attention has been paid in accounts of north-east African history to the role of the Ottoman Turks. With the capture of Egypt from its Mamluk rulers in 1517, the Ottomans established their first foothold in Africa. However, several factors drew them further into the region. First, there was a threat presented by the Portuguese, who sought to establish a monopoly on the valuable Indian Ocean trade and who challenged Ottoman control of the Red Sea and the pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina.
