This study investigates how Korean Parachute Kids perform academically in their schools and what social factors contribute to Korean Parachute Kids' academic performance. Korean children who came to the U.S. for educational purposes without their parental supervision are called `Korean Parachute Kids'. They have several characteristics: most of them come from high SES families, their parents have high expectations of their children and force them to go to the U.S., Korean Parachute Kids are pressured to attend Ivy League colleges, and their parents tend to compensate for their absence with money or presents. Korean Parachute Kids who come to the United States without their parents encounter many problems, both academically and socially. Many Korean Parachute Kids struggle to adjust and face academic failure due to language barriers, cultural differences, and the different curricula in the U.S. This failure occurs even though acquiring an education is the reason for Korean Parachute Kids' stay in the U.S. and is what their parents have invested exorbitant amounts of money. In light of the absence of their parents, many Korean Parachute Kids' behaviors go unchecked, which may, in turn, cause these children to be maladjusted in many aspects of their school lives. Korean parents' high expectation for their children's academic success is regarded as one of the factors that cause their children to misbehave. Research is needed in order to inform Korean parents and Korean and U.S. society about the academic and social implications of early study abroad for Korean children. Guidelines should also be provided in order for Korean parents to discern what the good and bad aspects of early study abroad in the U.S. are for their children. This research will also be beneficial to educators in America in that they will be aware of Korean Parachute Kids' academic and social difficulties in school since the number of Korean Parachute kids who study in the U.S. continues to increase.

Texto completoThis research was carried out in a West city of Paraná State. Its goal was to analyze the introduction of English as a Foreign Language for children in elementary school. To reach this goal some classes had been recorded and analyzed in order to describe the teacher-student interaction and the activities in the classroom. Besides that some interviews had been done with the principal and the teacher of English as a way to collect information about the curriculum, language teaching planning and the school facilities to improve the English learning process. For this reason it was used ethnographic microanalysis as classes observation, field diaries and research of other educational documents. To analyze the data collected in the English Language classic authors had been read to accomplish the research and to comprehend the data. It was noticed that the quantity of input during the English class had been scarce, characteristic very similar to English classes to teenager students, from 5th grade to 8th grade, since teacher have not good fluency in English, then they use to teach through grammar and translation activities with some drills. It was very productive if teachers could improve their own languages abilities, even oral ability, by English courses provided by the University. These courses might pre service or in service in order to prepare teachers to face this new challenge teach English for kids.

a phenomenon that may be accounted for mainly through the dominant literary, cultural, social, and ideological characteristics of each period. Although all periods from the Middle Ages to the present are considered in this regard, the study attributes a special significance to the postmodern age, where parody has become not only an essential area of inquiry but also a highly popular and widely produced literary form. In line with this emphasis, the study contends further that postmodern parody is primarily discourse parody. It argues, in other words, that discourse is the most essential target of parody during the postmodern age &

In addition to situating parody and its kinds in a historical context, then, this study engages in a detailed analysis of parody in the postmodern age, preparing the ground at the same time for making an informed assessment of the direction parody in general and its kinds in particular may take in the near future.

English, as an international language, is also an important tool in daily life. English teaching has been incorporated into elementary school curriculum under the Grade 1-9 Curriculum education policy. The age of first-learners has dropped from junior high school level to elementary or even down to pre-school level. As a result, many pre-schools claim to provide English-only teaching environment. These schools quote language learning theories in order to justify English teaching to very young learners claiming English only teaching is equivalent to the whole language learning. However, the theory of whole language is based on the first language learning environment. Whether those English-only pre-schools actually apply whole language learning method or whether those schools are simply quoting a scientific theory to justify such practices will be discussed in this thesis. This paper apply the theory of whole language teaching along with the perspectives of social linguistic, psychological linguistic and Emergent Literacy as base theories and discuss former topics by qualitative research method and observation. An English-only pre-school is selected as the research sample. In order to discuss and study the topics, clinical observation, data analysis and “in-depth interview” were used to collect the information of actual practice of English-only teaching. The result reveals two important findings. First, even though the English-only teaching pre-schools assert that English is merely a language used to teach pre-school curriculum, the number of English courses outnumbers the standard pre-school curriculum. Overwhelming amount of materials is forced into young kids in such single-language environment in the attempt to deliver results in a short time to the parents. In sum and all, the pre-school are nothing more than English cram schools. Second, these schools cannot recreate a whole-language environment as they claimed since whole language teaching theory emphasizes the language learning in the first language setting, as well as learning of culture and the logics. On the other hand, the so-called whole language teaching in the English-only pre-schools simply achieve in temporally setting change and language usage alternation. Therefore, those pre-schools should not promote their practice of English-only teaching as whole language learning.

The Ministry of Education has required all elementary schools in Taiwan to offer English lessons beginning from their third grade, and there are schools, especially those in urban areas, teaching English from first grade. Even though many young students are taking English lessons in the first grade, their parents still think what they are learning in school is not enough. They will need to study English after school in a private language institute, known as “English Bushiban” or “English chain educational institutions.” These parents hope that their children could attain a certain level of English proficiency before entering into junior high school. Although a large number of research studies regarding children’s English learning are available, very few of them have explored successful attributes for English chain educational institutions. The purpose of the study will be to explore the successful attributes of two different English chain educational institutions. They are Joy and Kid Castle. The questionnaires targeted at administrators, English teachers, and students of English chain educational institutions. Data collection began in January 2008 and ended in August 2008. The instruments used in this study were different versions of questionnaires designed for the three groups of participants and interviewed with some administrators of the two English chain educational institutions. The findings of the current studies indicated that the students, teachers, and administrators of English chain educational institutions seemed to have a positive attitude toward learning English in English chain educational institutions. In terms of advantages of English learning, English chain educational institutions offered students small classes, had a longer period of time for students to study English in contrast to ordinary school, grouped students into classes based on their proficiency levels, hired foreign English teachers, provided better learning equipment, and used effective learning materials for students. Moreover, most of the students reported that learning English in English chain educational institutions have helped students to improve their four language skills−listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Based on those advantages, English chain educational institutions had taught English to young students, the study will unfold the successful attributes to understand how to operate successful businesses for English chain educational institutions globally.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of two kinds of teaching English phonics songs and chants on elementary school students’ phonological awareness and word recognition. In addition, the relationship between phonological awareness and word recognition was explored as well. Moreover, students’ attitude toward English learning and their expectations to the teaching were further probed after the instruction. The subjects of the study included 50 students of two second-grade classes in an elementary school of southern Taiwan. During 10-week study of English phonics songs and chants instructions, the two classes were respectively labeled as an experimental group (EG receiving the explicit instruction) and a controlled group (CG receiving the implicit instruction). In addition, students’ pre-instruction and post-instruction performances on phonological awareness and word recognition were compared and analyzed. Finally, the questionnaire on student responses to the phonics songs and chants instruction was administered to the subjects of EG. Their responses and expectations were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the data analyses, the results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in the performance of phonological awareness between the experimental group and the controlled group. It infers that both implicit instruction and explicit instruction are beneficial to students’ performance of phonological awareness since both groups showed progress in posttests. 2. There was a significant difference in the performance of word recognition between the experimental group and the controlled group. It reveals that the explicit instruction has significant effects on students’ performance of word recognition. 3. The result of experimental group’s performance of phonological awareness after the explicit instruction showed a significant difference. 4. The result of experimental group’s performance of word recognition after the explicit instruction exhibited a significant difference. 5. In the experimental group, students’ performances of phonological awareness and word recognition were significantly related in the experimental group. 6. The results of the post-instruction questionnaire showed that most of the students in the experimental group gave positive responses to the explicit phonics songs and chants instruction. Based on the findings, the researcher suggested teachers apply explicit phonics songs and chants instruction to activate the students’ interest in English learning.

This research is mainly to discuss the business strategy of Children’s educational institutions chain from the operators perspective, and to explore the business strategy of Taiwan's well-known Kid Castel brand, to compare the business model and strategy of the school branch in Taiwan and in mainland China, the main source of information are interviews with the head of the Kid Castel Educational Institution Branch and the senior executive responsible for the mainland China market. Through this research it is possible to obtain information of the Kid Castle educational institution, collect relevant literature and reports to analyze the business strategy of the Kid Castel Education institution. In order to survive in a highly competitive market, the business strategy of each brand is absolutely important. Therefore, a case study of Kid Castel educational institution, one of the most famous brands of Taiwanese children's English language education institutions. This study summarized the literature and case studies, and arrives at the following conclusions: (1) The development experience and strategies of Kid Castle Educational Corporation in Taiwan and mainland China, regardless of the core value of the brand, the establishment of development bases, the structuring of channels, the reproduction of business strategies and teaching methods, the promotion of franchise business and the final strengthening of direct business operations, can be used as the best reference for chain institutions of children's education in Taiwan or for their expansion in the mainland market. (2) The timing of the investment of Taiwan's chain institutions of children's education in the mainland is similar, which is in 2001 when China entered WTO with its trend of internationalization after the announcement of economic opening, and at the time when different businesses entered the Chinese market one after another. (3) The mode of chain operation is commonly adopted in the mainland by the children's culture and education industry of Taiwan. (4) The investment environment of the children’s chain culture and education business in mainland China must be carefully evaluated. Although there is broad space for its expansion in mainland China, it can be inferred that there must be some insurmountable obstacles in the development of this business in the mainland market, and careful evaluation is required. (5) The Taiwanese operators of the children’s chain culture and education business have the same motivation to invest in the mainland, and the main reason is that the profits of the business in the Taiwan market have been saturated, and the franchise model has also entered a mature stage. At this time, moving westbound to the mainland is an inevitable trend due to the rapid economic growth after China's entry into WTO, as well as China's Shanghai World Expo and Beijing Olympic Games. (6) With the advent of the AI era, constant innovation is required for the teaching mode of children's chain culture and education business to keep pace with the times and meet the challenges of the AI generation, and therefore early preparations are required.

Chang Ta-chun has been regarded as one of the most important figures in the field of Chinese Literature in modern Taiwan, but no adequate research about his novels, especially in translated versions, could be found, which has initiated the completion of this study. The study aimed to analyze and evaluate the English version of Chang Ta-chun’s novels My Kid Sister and Wild Child based on the functionalist approach developed by Christiane Nord. A two-step procedure of text analysis was carried out by the researcher, which started with the analysis of the source text in a model for translation-oriented text analysis, followed by the identification of the translation strategies applied by the translator. Finally the functions and the effectiveness of the target text were evaluated in accordance with Nord’s function-plus-loyalty principle.

The aim of this study attempts to explore the application of the cooperative learning (CL) approach on EFL adolescent fiction curriculum in a junior high school. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is chosen to be the main reading material. The researcher puts emphasis on investigating the subjects’ learning interests in English reading and adolescent fiction, their attitudes toward CL activities, their responses to the classroom interaction and atmosphere in class, and also their opinions toward the adolescent fiction curriculum in CL approach. The subjects participated in this study including 58 eighth-graders at Daya Junior High School in Taichung. During the twelve-week English reading instruction, all the subjects were required to read the selected adolescent fiction, participating in the CL activities, finishing the assigned worksheets. In this study, the research methods involved the pre-instructional questionnaire and the post-instructional questionnaire in order to examine the students’ reading motivation toward adolescent fiction and the attitude towards the CL activities. Besides, the subjects’ performance of the assigned worksheets, their participation in CL activities, presentation of their ideas, and their interaction with peers were also observed and discussed in this study. The major findings of the study are summarized as follows: 1.This instruction raised the majority of the students’ reading motivation. 2.Most of the students had positive attitudes toward adolescent fiction after this reading instruction. 3.Most of the students enjoyed the CL activities after the reading instruction. 4.The majority of the students had positive interaction with their group members and also pleased with the atmosphere in class. 5.The majority of the students got involved into this instruction, responded positively to the CL activities, and gave some feedback and suggestions to this instruction. As for further studies, it is suggested that EFL teachers can apply CL in teaching reading, making good use of group discussion to raise students’ learning motivation and enhance positive interaction with each other. Furthermore, EFL teachers can use adolescent fiction as their supplementary reading materials in order to reinforce students’ reading proficiency and motivation. With the guidance of teachers and assistance of peers, students will gradually make process in English reading.
