Resumen
The study was carried out in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, to investigate the profitability of catfish production. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic characteristics of catfish farmers; estimated cost and returns of catfish production and identified constraints to catfish production in the study area. Data were collected from 120 respondents who were purposively chosen in the three Local Government Areas that made up Enugu Metropolis, using questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Gross margin model and a 3-point Likert type rating scale. The study showed that 61.7% of the respondents were males with a majority (95.0%) below the age of 45 years. The study revealed that from every 1000 fingerlings that were stocked, 980 catfishes were harvested with an average weight of 1.5kg in a period of 6 months. The catfish farmers expended an average total cost of N575,168 and made an average total revenue of N1,176,000. This indicates a survival rate of 98% of catfishes that was reared in the area. The gross margin analysis revealed a gross margin of N652,700.00 with a net farm income of N600,832.00 for every 1000 catfishes that were raised to maturity at1kg. For every 1N invested in the business, there was a return of N1.25 (RCI). The study concludes that catfish production in the study area was dominated by males in their active age who were well educated. Catfish production was very profitable in the study area. The constraints facing the farmers were the high cost of feeds, insufficient capital and poor extension services. These farmers could handle large scale production if capital is made available to them which will also allow them to make more profits and become employers of labour. The study recommends that educated unemployed youths in the area should be encouraged to go into catfish farming since the business is very profitable. Soft loans should be made available by credit agencies for the catfish farmers in the area to enable them to increase their scale of operation and the farmers should form and manage functional cooperative societies to enable them to achieve economies of scale.

Resumen
AbstractVoting is becoming of significance in Nigeria, as in many other countries in Africa. Although Nigerian electoral politics has attracted full attention from scholars, there is little research on the factors that determine voter turnout in the country at the local level, especially the South-East geopolitical zone (GPZ). This paper is a stepwise logistic regression analysis of the determinants of voting in Nsukka council in Enugu State, South-East GPZ of Nigeria. The results show that age (0.230), education (0.532), marital status (1.355), political trust (1.309) and partisanship (˗0.570) are significant predictors of voter turnout. The effect of age, education, marital status and political trust on voting is positive and statistically significant, but partisanship has a statistically significant negative relationship with voting (p<0.01). The paper highlights the importance of local level geographical differentials in the factors influencing voting in Nigeria.

Resumen
Women play an important role in the development of their families and communities economically; however, in comparison to men, they disproportionately experience barriers such as low income households, poverty, unemployment, lack of training, and discrimination. The purpose of this mini-ethnographic case study was to explore the perceptions of women entrepreneurs in Enugu State, Nigeria on what information they need to overcome possible barriers in their business and economic development. The 5M (market, money, management, motherhood, meso, and microenvironment) framework provided the theoretical lens for this investigation. The data gathering process involved face-to-face semistructured interviews with 15 women entrepreneurs in 3 local markets in Enugu State, in addition to direct observation, field notes, and reflective journal entries. Data were inductively analyzed and then triangulated to ensure trustworthiness of findings. The major themes revealed that these women needed information in the areas of marketing, customer relations, accounting procedures, financing strategies, and formal business training to grow their businesses. Embracing the results of this research may contribute to positive social change by providing information on how small scale women entrepreneurs could reduce their dependence on their husbands, partners, and relatives.

Resumen
Bibliography: leaves 85-87.
The primary aim of this study is to identify the major determinants of health status in Nigeria. This is done with a view to inform policy making in the health sector. Because of time and financial constraints, the study was limited to a particular geographic area Nsukka L.G.A. The study makes use of regression-based analysis to determine those factors that affect health status of individuals. Health status was measured as a categorical variable with a finite number of outcomes; this necessitated the use of the logit and multinomial logit models for estimation of the models used in the study. The selection of potential health determining factors included in the study is based on international literature on the subject. The literature supporting the study cut across different disciplines, such as: Epidemiology, Social Sciences, Economics and Health economics. The study is unique in the sense that it not only takes into account the effect of individual and household choices on health status, but also the effects of government intervention. In this light, some of the variables used for the study measure the effect of individual choices, some household, and the rest, government policies. The study is organised in seven chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the subject, an overview of Nigeria and the specific objectives of the study. Chapter 2 reviews international literature on 'determinants of health' and related subjects. The third chapter provides a detailed discussion on the development of the models used in the study and the problems associated with the measurement of health status. In addition to developing models to estimate health status, a model is developed to attempt to identify the factors that influence the incidence of water-borne diseases. Chapter 4 describes the data collection process, and the methods employed to achieve this. The fifth chapter provides descriptive statistics of the data collected from the sample site. The results of the models used for the study are presented in chapter 6. The results suggest that age, place of residence (urban or rural) and education for the younger members of the population have the most effect on health status of any individual within the sample location. Interestingly, the results show that increases in age and years of education for children aged 0 -18 years has a positive effect on their health, while an increase in age for those over 18 years of age has a negative effect on their health. Secondly, those who live in the rural areas are healthier than those who live in the urban areas. Also, the results show that people who get their drinking water from natural sources are more likely to suffer from a water-borne disease than those provided with potable drinking water. The results of the general models - to explain health status - also show that the government intervention had little or no impact on the health status of the people in the area. Chapter 7 reviews the past and current health policy thrust of the Nigerian health sector. The current health policy in Nigeria is very broad, and covers just about all the major health issues. The areas of priority in health are the prevention of HIV/AIDS, and the immunisation of infants/children. The results of this research suggest that the encouragement of enrolment of younger members of the population into schools, improvement of the living conditions in the urban areas and the provision of safe water to those people who depend on natural sources of water should be included as priority areas in policy-making in order to effect the efficient and effective improvement of the health status of the Nigerian population.

Resumen
Nigerian divorce laws and the divorce litigation process pose severe psychological, social-cultural, economic, and legal problems for families going through divorce in Nigeria. This thesis argues that divorce mediation may be able to ameliorate the harsh effects of these laws and process. This thesis seeks to achieve the following objectives: (1) To determine if the divorce mediation process can achieve the goals of a good divorce process, (2) To determine if the divorce mediation process can provide solutions to the myriad of unique problems which face families going through divorce in Nigeria, and (3) To determine the possibility of incorporating divorce mediation into the family dispute resolution system in Nigeria through an institutionalized divorce mediation program at the government-funded citizens' mediation centres. These objectives are achieved through an in-depth review of the customary and statutory laws regulating marriage and divorce in Nigeria as well as a review of the divorce litigation process in Nigeria. This thesis employs both desk and empirical research methods. It examines legislation, policy documents and academic treatises on divorce and divorce mediation. It also utilizes semistructured interviews to examine the Citizens' Rights and Mediation Centre, Enugu State, to determine its viability as a vehicle for the institutionalization of divorce mediation in Nigeria. The thesis finds that indeed divorce mediation achieves the aims of good divorce law. It further finds that while the divorce mediation process is not a panacea, its features lend themselves easily to the resolution of the myriad of problems which face families going through divorce in Nigeria. It also finds that divorce mediation can be incorporated into the Nigerian family dispute resolution system through an institutionalized divorce mediation program at the state-funded citizens' mediation centres present in several states in the country. It concludes that incorporating divorce mediation into the family dispute resolution system in Nigeria will ameliorate some of the harsh effects of the current divorce system. It offers short and long term proposals for the institutionalization of divorce mediation in Nigeria.

"Population-based prevalence of malaria among pregnant women in Enugu State, Nigeria: the Healthy Beginning Initiative". BioMed Central, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/610325.

Resumen
BACKGROUND: Malaria adversely affects pregnant women and their fetuses or neonates. Estimates of the malaria burden in pregnant women based on health facilities often do not present a true picture of the problem due to the low proportion of women delivering at these facilities in malaria-endemic regions. METHODS: Data for this study were obtained from the Healthy Beginning Initiative using community-based sampling. Self-identified pregnant women between the ages of 17-45 years were recruited from churches in Enugu State, Nigeria. Malaria parasitaemia was classified as high and low based on the malaria plus system. RESULTS: Of the 2069 pregnant women for whom malaria parasitaemia levels were recorded, over 99 % tested positive for malaria parasitaemia, 62 % showed low parasitaemia and 38 % high parasitaemia. After controlling for confounding variables, odds for high parasitaemia were lower among those who had more people in the household (for every one person increase in a household, OR = 0.94, 95 % CI 0.89-0.99). CONCLUSION: Results of this study are consistent with hospital-based estimates of malaria during pregnancy in southeastern Nigeria. Based on the high prevalence of malaria parasitaemia in this sample, education on best practices to prevent malaria during pregnancy, and resources in support of these practices are urgently needed.

[Objectives] In Nigeria, free antiretroviral treatment (ART) centers are mainly located in urban and peri-urban areas despite higher HIV-prevalence in rural areas. This study investigated the socio-economic and socio-demographic characteristics together with the access barriers faced by the users of free ART in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria. [ Design ] Cross sectional study Methods The study was conducted in two purposively selected sites/facilities (one public and one private) administering free ART. In each of the two facilities, 120 patients living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) were interviewed. Information about socio-economic status, demographic characteristics, factors constraining access and coping mechanisms were elicited using interviewer-administered questionnaires as a patient came out of the doctor's consulting room (exit interview). Principal components analysis, frequencies and cross tabulations were used in analysis. [ Results ] Of the 240 respondents, 67.5% were female. The mean age of the respondents was 36 years and 46.7% were within the age range of 30-41 years. The main occupations of the respondents were petty trading (21.3%), artisan (20.0%) and government worker (19.2%). High cost of transport (32.5%), stigma (31.7%) and long waiting hours (23.3%) were found to be major hindrances to accessing free ART. The mean cost of transport was US$3.94 per visit although an SES analysis showed that the most poor incurred the highest cost of transport (US$5.48) per visit. Stigma is clearly more of a barrier in Enugu metropolis (49%) compared to communities outside the Enugu metropolis (18.6%) and states apart from Enugu State (22.2%). PLWHA spent an average of 3.39 hours at the clinic during their monthly appointment. Own savings and financial support from relatives were the main coping mechanism used for accessing free ART. The most poor (underprivileged) bore a higher cost of transport while the effect of stigmatization appeared to be felt by all the socioeconomic groups. [ Conclusion ] Potential findings indicate that the poor bear the highest burden of transport costs while stigmatization affects all socio-economic groups although more on non poor than the poor. Advocacy against HIV and AIDS related stigma is crucial if HIV/AIDS interventions are to achieve their desired outcomes. Concerted effort is required from government, non-governmental agencies, communities and religious groups in the campaign against HIV/AIDS related stigma. The key finding of high traveling costs, particularly for the poor, suggests the need to consider mechanisms that might enhance access for the rural poor such as mobile ART clinics. It is also imperative to employ more medical personnel so as to address the issue of long waiting hours experienced by users of free ART.

Resumen
Magister Public Health - MPH (Public Health)
BACKGROUND: Health policy and systems research and analysis (HPSR&A) is central to health systems development as it tries to draw a comprehensive picture of how the health system and broader determinants of health can shape and be shaped by policies. It consists of researchers and practitioners with different levels of knowledge, experience and expertise, and draws upon a blend of disciplines that contribute to better understanding of complex health systems. This diversity of disciplines and competence creates potential risk for lack of clarity and common understanding of HPSR&A, and reflects a need for continuous capacity development at all levels. The Health Policy Research Group (HPRG) of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu campus (COMUNEC) has in the past thirteen years undertaken activities that aimed to contribute to building capacity for HPSR&A in Enugu state. AIM: The study examines the contributions of HPRG in building individual, institutional and regional capacity for HPSR&A in Enugu state, using the concept of Communities of Practice as an analytic lens. METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that uses qualitative research methods to examine the contributions of HPRG’s activities in building individual, organizational and regional capacity for HPSR&A, and to explore the factors that have influenced these contributions. The study population consisted of researchers, lecturers, policymakers and practitioners who have been involved in HPSR&A projects undertaken for the past thirteen years in HPRG. Purposive sampling with sequential referral was done and only key informants who met the selection criteria were selected. Data was collected through in-depth key informant interviews and review of relevant project reports and documents, and analysed manually through thematic analysis. Rigour was ensured through reflexivity, audit trail and triangulation of data.

Resumen
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences (School of Public Health), The University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Public Health in the field of Social Behaviour Change and Communication. June , 2017
Introduction Proper access to antenatal care services and skilled birth attendants during delivery is key to reducing maternal deaths. But studies show that women in rural communities in Nigeria, do not access Ante-Natal Care (ANC) and a lower proportion deliver in a health facility. An internationally funded maternal and child health program in Enugu State, Nigeria introduced the concept of using the support group to improve uptake of antenatal care services and health facility delivery services. The support group comprised of pregnant women who encouraged and supported each other from pregnancy through to delivery in a health facility. However there was no documented evidence to show that the support groups actually influenced women’s intention to deliver in a health facility. This research work is being carried out to address this gap – by providing evidence on whether the support groups influenced women’s intention to deliver in a health facility. Methods Following informed consent, a qualitative study was conducted. Data was collected from women aged between 18 years and 49 years who were in a support group in seven health facilities in Nkanu West Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, Nigeria. Seven Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and In-depth Interviews (IDI) were conducted. The data analysis was done using NVIVO software. All field notes were checked against translated interviews to ensure completeness and correctness. Inter-coding agreement, triangulation of data was done to ensure consistency. A descriptive analysis of the findings against theoretical framework was done and all findings also linked to objectives of the study. ii Results The pregnant women support group is shown to influence pregnant women’s intention to deliver in a health facility. Reasons for joining the group included; increasing knowledge about pregnancy and the benefits of ANC attendance and health facility delivery, socio-economic and spiritual support. However, the intention to deliver in a health facility is influenced by other factors such as; good and caring attitude of health workers, availability of qualified health workers, and better health infrastructure to respond to complications and emergencies. Other influences such as mother-in-law and spouses were also identified. The members of the group enjoyed benefits such as; visitation and presentation of gifts by support group members upon delivery, post- natal care and sometimes financial support. Despite these benefits, the goal of having a safe delivery remained the ultimate benefit of being a member of the support group. The existence, management and survival of the group other than by its members were dependent on the health facility workers. Conclusion The study demonstrated that the support group intervention did influence pregnant women’s intention to deliver in a health facility. But, the intention to deliver in a health facility was also driven by other factors such as; availability of skilled health workers, improved infrastructure and the cost of health services.

Resumen
AbstractAgriculture has shown a considerable capacity to adapt to climate change. Many adaptations occur autonomously without the need for conscious response by farmers and agricultural planners. However, it is likely that the rate and magnitude of climate change may exceed that of normal change in agriculture that specific technologies and management styles may need to be adopted to avoid the most serious of effects. Thus areas likely to be most vulnerable to climate variability can be spared from its impacts through implementation of appropriate adaptation measures such as development of indigenous technologies.Six hundred farmers from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were surveyed and they all possess different indigenous adaptation strategies ranging from swamp farming (Oyo State), application of neem seed (Kaduna State), soil erosion control (Enugu State), rainwater harvesting (Taraba State), land improvement (Cross River State) to farmland management (Benue State). They all have simple but profound technologies driving these schemes with much success. These indigenous adaptation techniques are majorly constrained by inadequate financial resources. Indigenous technology adoption is affordable with high revenue potential.

Resumen
This study aimed at determining the level of computer skills acquired by secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government of Enugu State, Nigeria. Specifically the study sought to ascertain the level of word processing skills, graphic application skills and Internet skills acquired by secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government of Enugu State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated in line with the objectives to guide the study. The study employed a descriptive survey research design using a sample of 272 respondents drawn from three secondary schools selected for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a 41-item structured questionnaire with a reliability index of .72, .83, and .80 using split half method. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation for research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that word processing skills and Internet skills are highly acquired by students' whereas graphic skills were moderately acquired by the students. It was therefore recommended that all education stakeholders should evolve supporting strategies like donating one dollar laptops to schools, retraining programmes and counterpart funding that will enhance computer literacy in Nigerian secondary schools.

Resumen
Electronic commerce (E-commerce) is a technological innovation that enables small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete on the same level with their larger counterparts. And it has the potential to improve efficiency and productivity in many areas and, therefore, has received significant attention in many countries of the world. A thorough analysis of the impact of the internet and e-commerce across firms, industries and economies is necessary to separate hype from reality. However, several researchers have called for the investigation of the association between the perceptions of e-commerce and the barriers to its adoption in developing countries. It is however on record that SMEs the world over are faced with significant challenges that compromise their ability to function and to contribute optimally to the respective economies where they operate. This study was conducted in three states of Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja and Enugu states) with the use of interviews to gather relevant data; the aim of which was to understand the challenges which serve as barriers to E-Commerce adoption by small and medium scale enterprises in the Nigerian context. Findings indicates that small and medium scale online present is at best unknown. The most common e-Commerce applications used by most SMEs include but not limited to the use of e-mails for communication purposes and a simple website for basic product information – information contained are usually outdated as most of these websites are hardly updated. Findings revealed, among others, that lack of and total absence of a regulatory framework on e-Commerce security, as well as technical skills, and basic infrastructures are some of the barriers to electronic commerce adoption. The findings however, provide a constructive insight to financial practitioners, governments as well as other stakeholders on the need to give e-commerce a place in all aspects of e-commerce activities.

Resumen
Coronavirus (COVID-19) has shaken the world not minding the strength of the global health system leading to over 824, 000 deaths amidst the search of a cure and total prevention. The Igbo states in Nigeria has the average prevalence of 711 cases of COVID-19 with the highest 1096 (Enugu) and least 207 (Anambra) as at 26th August, 2020. This chapter studied some Igbo indigenous plants in use since the outbreak and presents Bitter kola, Garlic, Giloy, Ginger, Lime, and Turmeric which are having anti-COVID-19 properties. The authors suggest that these plants have the properties that alter the PH on the interface between the virus spike proteins and the human respiratory surfaces causing a brake on the interaction with human ACE-2 and where interaction has taken place, the replication and translation stages are disrupted. The plants thus are potential modifiers of this milieu and inhibitor of the main protease and endoribonuclease via epigenetics and homeostasis. These plants consumption should be encouraged as prophylactic or curative measures pending the discovery of a definitive cure. The chapter recommends that the search for COVID-19 cure should not be limited to conventional medicines, rather should be extended to some indigenous plants in Igbo land.
