There is a broad literature in multiple-choice test development, both in terms of item-writing guidelines, and psychometric functionality as a measurement tool. However, most of the published literature concerns multiple-choice testing in the context of expert-designed high-stakes standardized assessments, with little attention being paid to the use of the technique within non-expert instructor-created classroom examinations. In this work, we present a quantitative analysis of a large corpus of multiple-choice tests deployed in the classrooms of a primarily undergraduate university in Canada.

Cheating on multiple-choice examinations is a serious problem not easily overcome by using more test forms, more proctors, or larger testing rooms. A statistical procedure compares answers for pairs of students using those items on which both made errors. If the number of identical wrong answers is sufficiently greater than the number expected by chance and if the students were seated close together, then cheating is likely. Using this analysis with 90 examinations has suggested ways to discourage cheating and demonstrated some limitations of the procedure.

This study presents results of experimental tests on quality of dissimilar welded joints between 316L austenitic and 2304 lean duplex stainless steels, welded without ceramic backing. Fiber laser welded butt joints at a thickness of 8 mm were subjected to non-destructive testing (visual and penetrant), destructive testing (static tensile test, bending test, and microhardness measurements) and structure observations (macro- and microscopic examinations, SEM, element distribution characteristics, and ferrite content measurements). Non-destructive tests and metallographic examinations showed that

The articles in this journal focus on what is, arguably, the biggest challenge facing school systems throughout the world, that of educational inclusion. It is hardly surprising that this is particularly challenging in secondary schools. Within such schools, internal factors, such as size and organisational complexity, clearly complicate attempts to foster more flexible and responsive arrangements. At the same time, external factors, not least the effects of competition between schools and parental choice, create particularly intensive pressures to achieve improved results in tests and examina

ABSTRACT The tests results of superduplex stainless steel welded joints made with a different heat input, using automatic submerged arc welding (SAW) and semi-automatic flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) have been presented. Metallographic examinations, the measurements of the ferrite content, the width of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the hardness of the welds in characteristic areas have been performed. Significant differences in the amount of ferrite in the weld metal and in the heat affected zone microstructure of joints were found.

The capacitively coupled (CC) resistivity method is an emerging geophysical technique for near-surface investigations. However, there are two major problems associated with using the CC resistivity (line antenna) system in ground investigations. These two problems are (1) the geometrical factor and (2) measurement biases. We first derive the geometric factor for the line-antenna array in a dipole-dipole configuration. The new expression of the geometric factor considers the separation between the two current (and the two potential) line antennas, thereby improving the accuracy of the measured

This article presents experimental results obtained for an a-C:H:Si coating deposited on a 100Cr6 steel disc in sliding contact with a 100Cr6 steel ball in the presence of zinc aspartate-based cutting fluid. The study involved scanning electron microscopic examinations, contact angle measurements, tribological tests, and surface texture analysis. The experimental data suggest that the tribological properties of the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating are satisfactory and that the non-toxic cutting fluid is well-suited to replace conventional fuels, which are toxic.

Abstract The present investigation explores Cognitive Test Anxiety (CTA) in a high-stake oral examination, taking into consideration how face-to-face and computer-based examination formats affect test-takers’ anxiety and consequently language performance. Two speaking tests – face-to-face and computer-based – were developed for a Spanish university’s ACLES B1 accreditation exam taken by 176 candidates. The Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale Revised (CTAS-2) and a structured interview were used to measure students’ anxiety as well as to observe students’ perceptions, individual behaviour, and how con

AbstractIn this study, the effect of solid solution temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of the AA7075 alloy after T6 heat treatment was investigated. Following solid solution at five different temperatures for 2 hours, the AA7075 alloy was quenched and then artificially aged at 120∘C for 24 hours. Hardness measurements, microstructure examinations (SEM+EDS, XRD) and tensile tests were carried out for the alloys. The results showed that the increased solid solution temperature led to formation of precipitates in the microstructures and thus caused higher hardness and tensile

Abstract The presented work provides the results of the abrasive wear resistance tests performed on Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys with the use of the Miller’s apparatus. The analyzed alloys underwent microstructure observations as well as hardness measurements, and the abraded surfaces of the examined materials were observed by means of electron scanning microscopy. The performed examinations made it possible to state that the Co-Cr alloys characterized in a high hardness, whereas the changes in the mass decrement were minimal, which proved a high abrasive wear resistance.

Examinations are perhaps one of the main methods of assessment in education. Unfortunately, there are some individuals who are so fearful of such events that performance is impaired. Test anxiety is believed to be the trait that predisposes individuals to react negatively to examinations and tests. One way in which it is believed that test anxiety affects performance is by increasing susceptibility to distraction from task‐irrelevant material. However, few studies have directly investigated this impairment. An experiment was therefore conducted to investigate susceptibility to distraction in h

Although few people enjoy tests and examinations, these aspects of education appear to be essential to the maintenance of standards, and they provide a vital learning environment for both students and instructor. Opinions regarding “objective,” or “multiple-choice,” questions range from very positive, which is my own qualified opinion, to very negative. In the latter instance, some claim that such questions should never be used, and refer derisively to multiple-choice questions as “multiple-guess questions.”
