Resumen
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the phases and challenges of the explanatory sequential design (ESD hereinafter) of mixed methods research (MMR hereinafter) by reviewing relevant literature. The literature was explored during the design stage of a Ph.D. project that sought to examine the relationship among social capital, education, and employment for foreign students graduating from several Estonian universities. The review finds that the explanatory sequential design of MMR is much more complex than just sequencing how and what kind of data to collect; it also entails selecting how data will be processed and presented using a range of techniques that are often riddled with difficulties. By addressing these ideas, this paper will aid those interested in comprehending the summary of the explanatory sequential design of MMR.

Resumen
The purpose of the present study was to describe the effect of expressive writing on the level of one’s grief through a sequential design (expressive writing experiments for 3 consecutive days for 15 minutes each days then an analysis of the participant’s writing contents was conducted). This study used a pre-post test matching technique experimental design follow up by content analysis. The total number of participants (both in the experimental and control groups) was 30 (M-age = 21.2; SD = 1.2), lost their parents more than six month. Randomized matching technique was use to divide participant into experimental (expressive writing) and control (non-expressive writing). The baseline score measured by the complicated grieving inventory of >25 (Prigereson, 1995). Results showed that the experimental group had a decreased level of grief relative to the control group, the texts showed an interested result to be further discussed.

Resumen
PurposeThis study aims to demonstrate how integration is achieved in an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design by assessing the effect of collaborative cultural dimensions on supply chain collaboration amongst firms in Ghana's downstream petroleum sector. Specifically, the study examined how collectivism, long-term orientation, power symmetry, as well as uncertainty avoidance influence supply chain collaboration. Besides, it also demonstrates how integration is achieved in an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design.Design/methodology/approachUsing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the study employed a partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) analysis of quantitative data (N = 166), followed by a thematic analysis of eight semi-structured interviews to explain how and why the dimensions of collaborative culture impact supply chain collaboration.FindingsThe quantitative findings suggest that three out of the four dimensions of culture significantly predict supply chain collaboration. Integrating the quantitative and qualitative findings suggests convergence between the results of the quantitative and qualitative phases of the study as the qualitative results compliment the quantitative findings and offer more nuanced understanding of the cultural mechanisms responsible for successful supply chain collaborations.Practical implicationsThe findings provide managers in the downstream petroleum sector with insights into how and why the dimensions of collaborative culture influence supply chain collaboration. These managers should, therefore, build corporate cultures characterized with high levels of long-term orientation, power symmetry and uncertainty avoidance.Originality/valueOwing to the role of culture in successful supply chain collaborations, this study, through a mixed-methods design, links the dimensions of collaborative culture with supply chain collaboration in the downstream petroleum sector. Moreover, it demonstrates how integration and complementarity are achieved at the study design, methods, as well as the interpretation and reporting levels of an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design.

Resumen
From the last few decades, math anxiety has become the major concern of educationists. Students’ academic achievement especially in mathematics has been considered as a crucial factor in determining the future progress of students. But unfortunately, the participation rate of students in mathematics is decreasing day by day. The main objectives of the study were to assess secondary school students’ anxiety in mathematics and to explore the causes of students’ anxiety in mathematics. A sequential explanatory mixed method research design was used. The data was collected through both quantitative and qualitative methods. A five-point rating scale questionnaire was developed for quantitative data collection. The tool was validated through pilot testing. 100 students participated in pilot testing. Internal consistency of the instrument was assessed by Croanbach’s alpha which was 0.7. The targeted population of the study was both male and female secondary school students from the district Bahawalpur, Punjab. Out of the whole population, 726 male and female students were approached via multi-stage sampling technique. After quantitative data collection data was entered in SPSS version 20 and percentage, frequency distribution and mean score was calculated. Based on the quantitative data results it was observed that secondary school students were numerophobic and had moderately a high level of anxiety in mathematics. On the basis of quantitative results, interviews of secondary school teachers were conducted to explore the causes of students’ anxiety in mathematics. 20 teachers were approached via purposive sampling. The qualitative data revealed that major causes of students’ anxiety in mathematics were lack of practice, lack of previous knowledge, communication gap between student and teacher, and lack of interest in mathematics.

Resumen
Research design is the technical aspect of a study which includes the planning of the research, visualising the data taking into consideration the problems that are associated in using the data in the study. There are three main research approaches, i.e., quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. Mixed methods research involves combining or integration of quantitative and qualitative research procedures and data in a research study. The article illustrates the three main models of Mixed Methods Design i.e., Explanatory sequential, Exploratory sequential and Convergent mixed methods design. The main focus of the article is on Complex Mixed Methods Designs. Some of the designs are illustrated with figures for better understanding. A table to help investigators choose the appropriate mixed methods design is also provided. The Complex Mixed Methods designs involve more steps and procedures enabling them to fit in complex projects. Mixed methods research can produce a more complete knowledge as it includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Resumen
Abstract Background: Adolescents’ physical activity decreases from the stage of childhood to adulthood. This study was addressed to explain adolescents’ insufficient physical activity (IPA) and its related factors. The subjects were 1201 adolescents in the quantitative phase and 25 adolescents in the quantitative phase. Methods: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design with follow-up explanations variant was used, which involved collecting quantitative data (1201 adolescents) first and then explaining the quantitative results with in-depth interviews and written narrative (25 adolescents) during a qualitative study. Results: The quantitative results showed that 98.8% of adolescents did not have the recommended physical activity. Five themes were extracted in the qualitative phase including the inhibitory effect of the school environment and peers, as well as the inhibitory effect of the family environment, lack of availability and cultural barriers for the presence of girls in the community, the effect of self-feeling and self-understanding, and physical and mental exhaustion and permutation. According to the qualitative findings of the study, physical and mental exhaustion expressed the fact that, although adolescents had an unfavorable sense of IPA, they were under the effects of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Conclusion: The comparison of these themes indicates that this behavior is imposable but not optional.

Resumen
This sequential explanatory design aims at exploring science teachers’ survey and perceptions of technology integration regarding to technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) which focused on quantitative findings supported by qualitative findings. It involved 356 respondents for the survey and eight participants for the interview. Descriptive statistics, T-test and Anova were used in quantitative data analysis while for qualitative data analysis, thematic process was conducted. Findings show that the science teachers’ perception on their technological-based knowledge is lower than non-technological knowledge namely pedagogical and content knowledge. Further, qualitative findings informed in-depth information about technology integration referred to TPACK namely problems in technology integration, advantages of technology integration, students centered learning, knowledge of new technology and its classroom integration, and peer collaboration. Policy recommendation was established for betterment of ICT integration in instruction especially for developing countries.

Resumen
Computational Thinking (CT) skill is the ability to solve problems with computer thinking. In addition, CT can be seen as a structured and systematic approach that can be implemented in learning. This study aims to bring the computational thinking approach to the non-computer science student’s class and involved 35 undergraduate students of physics education in the computational physics course. The research method used was the mixed method sequential explanatory design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011), with the following design. Broadly speaking, the flow of the mixed method research method with an explanatory sequential design in this study includes the collection of quantitative data obtained from student self-evaluation instruments related to the understanding of the CT approach stage. The results showed that the Computational Thinking (CT) approach can be applied to non-computer science students in online learning which includes 6 stages of implementation and 6 stages of implementation. Other results indicate that this method can be used in improving student CT skills. Keywords: Computational thinking, physics, problem solving

Resumen
Flow is a desirable state of consciousness and absorption in an optimally challenging activity. Prior research has investigated individual differences in flow. The present study investigates flow by contrasting physical versus mental activities, using a mixed-methods, sequential explanatory design. The sample from the quantitative phase included 205 undergraduate university students assessed on measures of personality, difficulties in emotion regulation, and flow. The big-five traits intellect and conscientiousness, as well as the emotion regulation subscale “lack of emotional clarity” predicted flow during mental activities, but unexpectedly no variables significantly predicted physical flow activities. The second phase used semi-structured interviews with 10 participants. Analyses of the interviews helped further explain the statistical findings, revealing four main themes: role of stress, source of guilt, presence of others, and satisfaction and fulfillment. We conclude that flow is especially relevant in physical activities which have advantages over mental activities in opportunities to experience flow.

Resumen
In this paper, we developed D-optimal design in linear model with two explanatory variables in the presence of heteroscedasticity. A sequential method of getting D-optimal design was adopted. Two different structures were used based on the literatures; it was found that the optimal design takes the extreme values of the design region. The results of simulated data was justified with real life data from the kinematic viscosity of a lubricant, in stokes, as a function of temperature and pressure which was used as discussed in Linssen (1975). The relative efficiency of other designs with respect to D-optimal designs was determined. Three correction methods was adopted from weighted least square method for heteroscedasticity problem, it was found that the correction method tagged HCW1 performed better.

Resumen
Integration of mixed methods involves bringing together quantitative and qualitative approaches and methodologies. Limited application in midwifery research has identified a need for practical examples. How to integrate two research approaches and methodologies in a sequential explanatory mixed methods study, at the design, methods, interpretation and reporting levels will be explained. This paper describes and discusses an example of how integration was used to develop a better understanding of midwives’ knowledge and confidence after attending a healthy eating education workshop/webinar. This example illustrates how integration can be achieved and emphasises how a weaving technique can be used, and findings are presented in a joint display and extreme case analysis. The sequential explanatory design was adopted to merge and mix different datasets to be collected and analysed. Then, using meta-analysis to identify areas of convergence or discordance, which provided a more comprehensive overview and understanding of the key themes that linked midwives' knowledge and confidence. The application of this mixed methods design assisted in investigating and exploring midwives' knowledge and confidence levels and provided clear insights for midwives needs and the effectiveness of healthy eating education on practice.

Resumen
Abstract Background: One of the most important and basic needs of adolescent girls is reproductive health services and education, which is different from that required by adults. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine reproductive health education needs from the perspective of adolescent girls living in urban and rural areas, as well as to explore adolescents’ understanding of reproductive health needs. Subjects: The first phase was a cross-sectional study conducted on 1274 female adolescents. In the second phase, 77 girls in the form of 11 groups participated in focused group discussions. Methods: This sequential explanatory mixed methods study using follow-up variants was conducted in two phases. Questionnaires, including items on socio-demographic characteristics and reproductive health needs from adolescents’ perspectives, were completed using the self-administered method. Results: The quantitative results of the study revealed city and village girls’ perspectives on reproductive health education needs. These results showed that village adolescents were nearly 1.5–2 times more in favor of a same sex counselor, reproductive health group education, and the need for sexual health education than city adolescents. A review of the transcripts of the qualitative phase led to the extraction of two themes including the characteristics of the reproductive health educator and priorities of reproductive health education, which explains the adolescent girls’ understanding of reproductive health education needs. Conclusion: The findings of this study confirm the importance of determining reproductive health education needs from the perspective of adolescent girls. The present study shows how a sequential mixed design can be used for a better understanding of reproductive health needs of adolescent girls. The results of this study can be used in health research, education, policy making, and planning associated with adolescent health.

Resumen
Purpose: This paper seeks to ascertain the regulations governing students’ internship programmes in Selected Technical Universities in Ghana. Design/Methodology/Approach: The sequential explanatory mixed methods approach was utilised. Two separate structured questionnaires were administered to 481 students and 299 senior members (lecturers and administrators) of six selected technical universities (TUs); whereas members of industry, executives of business associations and government regulatory bodies in the tertiary sector of Ghana’s education system were interviewed, using an interview guide. Data was analysed through descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Constant Comparative Analysis. Findings: There was no well-defined enforceable law requiring TUs to secure internship placement for students, although, some regulatory bodies insisted that TUs showed evidence of their ability to secure placements for their students for industrial training before awarding programme accreditation. Research Limitation/Implication: The study focuses on regulations governing student internship programmes in Ghana. The study concentrated on selected Technical Universities in Ghana. Practical Implication: The knowledge advanced in this study underscores the need for proper synergy between Technical Universities regarding regulation governing student internship which should be spearheaded by the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission acting as a facilitator, creating interfaces and providing funding and incentives. Social Implication: The Government of Ghana can allow companies some tax exemptions or make the environment business-friendly for companies so that they can expand their operation to accept more interns. Originality/Value: This paper synchronises the perspectives of multiple actors on the regulations governing student internship programmes.

Resumen
E-learning has become an integral part of mainstream society and hence revolutionizing distance education endeavours. A number of change agents and bureaucrats in Uganda have embraced this pedagogy constructing it as an alternative to the traditional brick and mortar educational systems, which have become difficult to develop and maintain. However, despite the high level of investment on e-learning programs, there is a slow adoption of this new pedagogy amongst students and faculty, and those who do start to use the system opt out later. This trend of slow adoption is likely to constrain government’s efforts of improving the skill mix, competencies and numbers of midwives in the country. This research intended to ascertain whether instructional design was an influencer of e-learning adoption and profile the salient instructional design traits relevant to e-learning adoption in midwifery schools in Uganda. Ten schools were sampled with 224 participants. Data collection was conducted in two phases, the first entailed quantitative data collection and analysis to ascertain whether instructional design played a significant role in e-learning adoption and the second embraced a qualitative data collection and analysis to ascertain the salient traits of instructional design to be relied on by midwifery schools. Simple linear regression analysis established that instructional design had a significant influence on e-learning adoption with p value of (p = 0.016), and it accounted for 38.7% of the variance in e-learning adoption, with a moderate positive relationship and its key salient traits includes: choosing an appropriate instructional design model to guide the entire e-learning process, interactivity of e-learning materials, collaborative working in developing and updating e-learning materials, eliciting feedback on instructional materials, and engaging in more than one e-learning activity. Midwifery schools therefore have to focus on these six traits if they are to improve e-learning adoption.

Resumen
Learners underperform in stoichiometry as they lack conceptual reasoning of the underlying concepts and the ability to solve stoichiometric problems. Therefore, it was necessary to determine if there is a statistical correlation between problem-solving skills and conceptual reasoning in stoichiometry and if so, whether one can significantly predict the other. The theoretical framework is the cognitive load theory (CLT). This theory expects teachers to know where to focus their teaching and how to assess their learners’ work to avoid unnecessary overloading of the working memory, which might affect their performance. The explanatory sequential mixed-method research design was employed with 410 grade 11 Physical Science learners in their intact classes. The participants wrote the learner achievement test (LAT) and responded to a semi-structured interview. The learners’ test scores were then used to run a statistical test. The Pearson correlation and regression showed that the justifications given by learners for choosing correct or incorrect multiple-choice options were not due to chance, and the results of the learner interviews supported the learners’ performance in the test. Moreover, the findings indicated that there was a positive correlation between problem-solving skills and conceptual reasoning where statistically, conceptual reasoning predicted learners’ problem-solving skills using regression analysis. Resumen
This study details the research practices that were developed to operationalize the guiding principles of the transformative mixed methods design. A transformative, explanatory-sequential mixed methods design was utilized to examine the workplace experiences of academic migrants and findings from the study supported better work conditions for the population. Two critical theoretical frameworks were implemented—migrant identity and intersectionality—and the study also illustrates how theoretical frameworks can serve to amplify the transformative paradigm in both phases of the mixed methods design. This study makes a significant contribution to the field of mixed methods by exhibiting rigorous research practices that operationalize the transformative criteria and demonstrates how to actualize social justice with and for the studied population.

Resumen
Background: Despite soaring healthcare costs, patient outcomes are suboptimal in the USA. Efforts to limit healthcare costs and improve quality of care have had limited success. An improved understanding of factors that influence clinical decision-making may provide insight into optimizing the quality and costs of care. The process of healthcare decision-making is contextual, complex and poorly understood. This study aims to explore the factors that influence clinical decision-making in the setting of limited evidence of effectiveness, limited or conflicting guidance, significant resource burden and variation in values and preferences.Rationale for study design: This sequential explanatory mixed methods study includes a case-based survey (quantitative phase). The results of the survey will guide the sampling and questions for the semi-structured interviews (qualitative phase). The interviews will provide an in-depth explanation of the survey results. Combining the two methods provides complementary information and deeper understanding of the phenomenon of clinical decision-making.Methods: The quantitative strand will consist of case-based surveys in the fields of neonatology and cardiology. Participants are asked to pick the best management choice for each question followed by a rating of the influence of different factors on a 7-point Likert scale. Follow-up questions explore knowledge and influence of evidence, guideline recommendations and costs on decision-making. Analysis of the survey results will inform sampling and the focus of qualitative interviews. The interviews will be analyzed using qualitative description.Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first study using a mixed methods approach including a case-based survey of physicians practicing in diverse settings to explore the factors that influence clinical decision-making. The results of this study may assist with strategies to implement high value care resulting in improved patient outcomes and limiting costs.

Resumen
Inspirational Leadership (IL) is pivotal in the spaces of educational leadership to inspire and motivate teachers to achieve organisational goals. Concerning it, this study intends to explore the existence of inspirational leadership among teachers of Bagmati Province. For this purpose, this study employed explanatory sequential mixed method design, a cross-sectional survey in Quan strands and narrative inquiry in Qual strands. The data in the Quan and Qual strands were gathered via survey questionnaires from 502 respondents and in-depth interviews from four participants, respectively. The collected Quan data were carried out to assess the levels of inspirational leadership and their dimensions (Intellectual stimulation, envisioning, managing impression, moulding follower’s expectations) as high levels due to the presence of supportive relationships, appreciative and innovative culture, critical thinking, and emotional attachment among school teachers. However, meaning-making as one of the dimensions of inspirational leadership is recognised as a very high level of supportive relationships, appreciative and innovative culture, critical thinking, and emotional attachment among school teachers. Furthermore, the social exchange relations also inspired teachers to perform their job. So the high level of inspirational leadership assists teachers in achieving high job productivity in their school.

Resumen
The role of homework in students’ academic achievement has become matter of discussion for the decades. In this sphere, this research tried to investigate the role of homework in students’ academic achievement from learners’ perspectives with sequential explanatory mixed research design. Survey questionnaire and unstructured interview were used as the tools of data collection and 400 secondary level students from both public and institutional schools from a district of Nepal were the sample population. Two datasets; quantitative and qualitative were collected and analyzed sequentially. The findings of the research reveal that homework can enhance students’ academic achievement but the traditional type and amount of homework assigned, and the less support from their teachers and parents promote plagiarism and demotivate learners in doing it for their own sake. The findings suggest that homework should be for students’ leaning which is possible when they are intrinsically motivated in doing it.

Resumen
Objective: Nursing education institutions globally have called for mentorship to help address the nursing faculty shortage; however, little is known about the current state of mentorship or the barriers and facilitators for implementing mentorship programs in Canadian nursing schools. The objective of this study is to identify the current state of mentorship in Canadian nursing academia and explore factors that impact implementation of mentorship programs. Methods: A sequential-explanatory mixed methods design with 2 phases: (1) cross sectional survey of nursing faculty to identify the current state of mentorship in Canadian schools of nursing and explore facilitators and barriers to implementing mentorship programs; and, (2) qualitative interviews about nursing faculty member’s experiences with mentorship. Integration occurred when selecting phase 2 participants based on phase 1 results. A web-based survey was developed based on a review of literature; surveys were collected between September 2015 and March 2016 from 935 nursing faculty members. Survey participants (n = 48) were purposively sampled for maximum variation to participate in qualitative interviews, and data were analyzed thematically. Results: The majority of Canadian nursing schools lack formal mentorship programs with existing mentorship programs varying in scope and components. Factors influencing mentorship program implementation include: mentorship training and guidelines; quality of the mentoring relationships; choice and availability of mentors; organizational support; time and competing priorities; culture of the institution; and evaluation of mentorship outcomes. Conclusions: Our results confirm lack of formalized mentorship programs in Canadian schools of nursing. In developing mentorship programs, academic leaders need to consider multiple barriers and facilitators to ensure success.

The article reports the findings of a retrospective study which looked at Hungarian learners’ attitudes towards Russian people, the Russian language and teachers of Russian. Mixed-methods sequential explanatory design (Ivankova, Creswell, & Stick, 2006) was applied which combines the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in two consecutive phases. First person accounts turned out to be a useful and relevant resource for exploring individual differences in proficiency in Russian. Differences in attitudes appear to play a role in the developmental process, but to what extent this refers to attrition or non-acquisition is unclear.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between resilience, hope, and forgiveness and the difference between forgiveness and hope regarding sex. The result of this study with a mixed method research design precisely sequential explanatory through follow-up is to create a model that will better understand the variables being explored from a Filipino perspective. The participants of this study included 250 college students from a university and were selected through nonprobability sampling, specifically quota sampling for the quantitative part of the study, and 15 college students to answer the interview. The study used a mixed method design, specifically sequential explanatory through follow-up design. There were three instruments used in the study, namely: Herth Hope Index, Heartland Forgiveness Scale, and Wagnild and Young's Resilience Scale, and validated interview questions. The results suggest a significant relationship between hope and resilience, but there is no significant relationship between hope and forgiveness. Additionally, when compared based on sex, it was found that there is no significant difference between forgiveness and hope. In terms of thematic analysis, themes formed out of the participants' experiences in life about resilience include positivity, adaptability towards circumstances, and toughening. In terms of perception of hope by the participants, faith, desire and possibility were the themes formed. Based on the participants' responses, two types of forgiveness have been formed, which include decisional and emotional forgiveness. As a person becomes more hopeful in his or her, he or she can also be resilient in facing adversities in life. Hope can be a source of resilience. However, it is not at all times that hope can influence the likelihood of forgiving people who have offended someone. There can be other factors that can make people forgive. Hope and forgiveness do not differ in terms of sex.

Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design, the purpose of this article is to demonstrate an innovative mixing of methods via the use of secondary survey data and detailed qualitative cases. This design is illustrated in the context of exploring influential family factors for youth with learning and mental health concerns. The use of case propositions as a central point of integration is highlighted. The integration of the quantitative and qualitative findings demonstrated the multifaceted psychological and relational issues, including parental monitoring, parent mental health, and youth self-efficacy. These meta-inferences provide surprising insight into the complex family experiences of youth with learning disabilities. Implications for theory and research are explored, concluding with a call for more multilevel mixed methods research using secondary data analysis.

This article explores innovative and novel research methods and adaptive approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic to examine visitor learning and proenvironmental behavior. We present a mixed methods study that used a methodological bricolage approach to field-based data collection. The pandemic limited our ability to carry out the original study design. Quickly pivoting, the study was adapted to an explanatory sequential design with a survey, an interpretive video, naturalistic observations, personal meaning maps, interviews and a new method: comprehension assessments. This resulted in data collection that maintained trustworthiness and rigor, while remaining flexible to changing protocols. This article contributes to the field of mixed methods research by demonstrating the application of methodological bricolage in visitor research during catastrophic social change.

Resumen
Background: Oral cancer is an important public health problem in Southeast Asian countries. Generally, cases are reported in advanced stages, resulting in prolonged treatment, high financial burden, and poor prognosis. When diagnosed early, treatment is simple and inexpensive. Materials and Methods: A sequential explanatory study design, cross-sectional survey followed by in-depth interviews, will be used to assess various factors contributing to the patient and diagnostic intervals in oral cancer. At the outset, Data collection tools will be developed and validated. The study protocol is designed as per the "Aarhus statement" for early diagnosis research. In-depth interviews with selected stakeholders and review of documents related to cancer control will constitute the explanatory component of the study design. Discussion: Primary prevention helps in reducing cancer incidence whereas secondary prevention helps in reducing morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis is a key secondary prevention strategy. Research on early diagnosis of cancer in general and oral cancer, in particular, is scarce. In this regard, a comprehensive and thorough evaluation of various factors facilitates or impede early oral cancer symptom presentation will help in designing policies and programs to promote early diagnosis of oral cancer.
