Resumen
This research advocates the evolution of family business and entrepreneurship studies. Focusing on second-generation Chinese family businesses, it has investigated how their entrepreneurial processes are influenced by their family attributes, which leads to different outcomes. Two major constructs were operationalised. First, the notion of "familiness", coined in prior literature to represent the "family side" of a business, was reviewed and conceptualised on three dimensions, namely business objectives, resources, and decision-making, each having five sub-dimensions. By examining business practices on these dimensions and sub-dimensions, "familiness" of given businesses was captured, which located the businesses on a continuum between a family orientation pole and a market orientation pole. Second, entrepreneurial processes were referred to as the creation of an opportunity, which was exploited by organisational means and resulted in market outcomes. Existing business resources determined whether the entrepreneurial processes were internally or externally-oriented. Innovations were treated as both outcomes and validating criteria of the entrepreneurial processes. Three types of innovation were identified, depending on their relevance to the existing business, namely discontinuous, dynamically continuous, and continuous. This research employed a qualitative, case study approach, and semi-structured interviews were undertaken at eight small to medium-sized family businesses in eastern China. The findings support established literature which argues that there is a positive relationship between family orientation, internally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and continuous innovation. On the other hand, the research indicates that the individual-level transgenerational effects of "familiness" have a significant impact on entrepreneurial processes of second-generation Chinese family businesses. With such an impact, market-oriented businesses do not implement the most externally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and produce dynamically continuous innovations; while businesses with a hybrid combination of family orientation and market orientation implement the most externally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and discontinuous innovations. In general, this research has made conceptual and theoretical contributions by suggesting a multi-dimensional notion of "familiness", which includes an individual-level component. In addition, a dual-level approach has been proposed for studies on entrepreneurship in family businesses, emphasising both firm processes and the role of the owner-manager. Implications have been indicated for business practitioners and policy-makers as well.

He, Ruifu. "Family networks and life in southeastern China". Thesis, City University London, 1992. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7972/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines social relationships and patterns of social interaction in contemporary rural China with a network perspective. Based on first hand data collected in southeastern China by the method of anthropological fieldwork, it tries to understand peasants' social behavior in the context of their concrete, multidimensional inter-family relations. This context of relations is called "family network". Family network is defined in this thesis as a quasi group formed by families that is directly linked by kinship and friendship and have frequent social exchange and interaction with the focusing family. It cuts across the boundaries of villages and of kin and non-kin. Throughout the thesis the emphasis is placed on patterns of social interaction in relation to different kinds of social relationship, and on the utilization of these relationships in social and economic life. In explaining people's behavior of supporting others, it is not the notion of group solidarity, but the idea of reciprocity (and mutual exploitation) between both sides of a relationship in the process of social exchange, that is considered as significant. The empirical materials described in this thesis also suggest important changes in patterns of social interaction and the notion of social relationship brought by a rapid economic development in the past ten years.

Resumen
This thesis examines how a hegemonic ideal that I refer to as the ‘able-responsible man' dominates the discourse and performance of masculinity in the city of Nanchong in Southwest China. This ideal, which is at the core of the modern folk theory of masculinity in Nanchong, centres on notions of men's ability (nengli) and responsibility (zeren). It differs from, while not always being in contradiction with, the ideal of the ‘wealthy and worldly man' that many scholars of contemporary China have written about. For my research informants, an exemplary man is expected to excel financially but also to shoulder his responsibilities, first and foremost within the kin group, and then to society and the country. I explore the formation and nuances of this ideal in an economic and social milieu that has been radically transformed by forces such as modernization, labour migration, the one-child policy, and changing ideologies and practices of leisure, individualism, filial piety, gendered power and nationalism. Through ethnographic accounts from teenage boys, men of marriageable age, and married men alike, I show that the hegemonic model is coercive, yet negotiable. These accounts reveal the vulnerabilities of male youth and adults in different circumstances, and the multiple and varying strategies they take as they enact their masculinities. The hierarchical nature of relationships amongst men and between the two genders is complicated by an intersection with other social divisions and individual life trajectories. At the apex of the hegemonic model are the country’s leaders who exemplify for their political subjects what it means to be an exemplary Chinese man in the modern era. The thesis looks into not only what men think of being men and their performance as men, but also at what women think and how they construct and, in some regards, sustain the male mode.

Wang, Jin. "Essays on family investments, education policy and returns in China". Thesis, University of Surrey, 2017. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842627/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis conducts an empirical analysis which explores the impact of parental investment, birth control policy and higher education expansion reform on individuals’ education attainments and labour market outcomes in China. The thesis includes three substantive chapters. Firstly, Chapter 3 presents new evidence on the child quantity-quality (Q-Q) trade-off in China. The primary contribution is the use of a new instrumental variable (IV) for fertility, i.e., local policy relaxation regarding Chinese birth control, in order to establish the causal effect of family size on child educational attainments and health outcomes. The aim is to examine whether having more children in a family has a negative impact on child quality and if the higher education of parents and a larger household income have a positive impact on child outcomes. Additionally, this estimation can check the effectiveness of the one-child policy. The findings indicate that there is a negative effect of fertility on education outcome, and support the prediction made by the Becker and Lewis’ model regarding the Q-Q trade-off for children. However, there is no evidence for health outcome. Secondly, Chapter 4 studies the role of higher education expansion policy in increasing the equality of higher education opportunities. In 1999, government rapidly expanded the number of higher education places available. The goal of this chapter is to explore the impact of family background and gender on access to higher education, prior to and following the higher education expansion policy. The analysis is based on nationally representative data from the Chinese Family Panel Studies (CFPS), collected in 2010. Cohort-level analysis and a difference-in-difference model were used to estimate how the benefits of the education expansion were distributed. The results show that higher education expansion has not been equally distributed among people from richer and poorer backgrounds. The education of parents remains a strong determinant of educational outcomes among children following education reform. Despite the benefits brought on by the expansion system, such as more opportunities for accessing tertiary education, these benefits have not been distributed evenly among families, geographies or gender. The equality of higher education opportunities remains a difficult task. Finally, Chapter 5 examines the causal impact of higher education expansion policy on labour market outcomes for young college graduates. Large pooled cross-sectional datasets were used from the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) between 1995 and 2013. First, the Mincer-style of returns to education for young cohorts were estimated in the 1995, 2002, 2007 and 2013 survey years. The aim was to compare the extent of returns to education among the pre-expansion cohort and the post-expansion cohort, and evidence is found a significant decrease in the returns to higher education of young cohorts. Second, another approach quantifies the effects of educational expansion on labour market outcomes and identifies the distribution of returns to education by exploring a natural experiment. This study exploited variation in the intensity of expansion in college numbers across provinces and applied a difference-in-difference model to estimate the effect of the education reform. The results of the study also illustrate expansion has a negative effect on college graduates’ returns and labour market outcomes.

Hillier, Andrew Charles. "Three brothers in China : a study of family in empire". Thesis, University of Bristol, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.702173.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the relationship between family and empire, taking as a case study, the Hillier family, who lived and worked in China and South-East Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It argues that family operated as a key mechanism in the British world, both on a public and private level, in that it had an agency going beyond that of the individual members, which both stimulated and consolidated the expansion of that world. The process was mutually constitutive in that family both shaped and was shaped by empire. However, the strains and dislocations of those experiences could fundamentally alter and re-configure the notion of family, which lay at the heart of Victorian society. Spanning four generations, spread across a range of occupations and empire locales, the study takes as its primary focus three Hillier brothers, who made their lives and careers in China in the last half of the nineteenth century and first decade of the twentieth century, working in the Consular and Diplomatic service, the Chinese Maritime Customs and the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. Evolving a specific empire identity, they developed a series of networks which were key to establishing significant relationships with British and Chinese officialdom. By knitting together a number of strands of current historiography, relating to family, on the one hand, and the expanding British world, on the other, the study makes an important contribution to understanding the way in which this world was given coherence through the mechanism of family but the price which this exacted, in terms of its individual members and its structure, more generally. It also provides a model for exploring the role of family in other empire settings.

Lo, Wing-sze Esther y 羅詠詩. "Happy family kitchen : evaluating a gratitude intervention to promote family communication". Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/198852.

Texto completo
Resumen
In Hong Kong family communication is inadequate due to a work-focused and busy life style and a dearth of communication skills among family members. Positive family communication is essential to enhance understanding and facilitate expression of care and concern among family members. Happy Family Kitchen, a family-based intervention program was implemented to enhance family communication among Chinese families in a district in Hong Kong. The study was in an explanatory sequential design with two phases. The first phase was a longitudinal pre-post one-group study aimed at examining whether gratitude expression practice among family members would improve family communication and strengthen family health, happiness and harmony (3Hs) in a Chinese community. The second phase was a qualitative study in the form of focus group interviews to understand the participants’ experiences in gratitude expression practice in family communication. With the collaboration of local community partners, a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach was adopted to develop a culturally informed intervention. In the quantitative study, 330 eligible families were recruited to participate in a gratitude expression practice intervention. Data from self-administered questionnaires were collected at baseline, 6 weeks and 3 months after the first intervention session. Results showed more frequent expressions of thankfulness and appreciation and less frequent criticism among family members were independently associated with improvement in family communication scores by 1.39 points [95% CI: 0.34-2.43], 1.51 points [95% CI: 0.30-2.72] and 0.92 points [95% CI: 0.21-1.64] respectively. Family 3Hs were enhanced while family communication improved. In the second phase qualitative study, thirteen focus group interviews using a semistructured interview guide were conducted in mid 2011. The interviews focused on the impact of change, facilitators and barriers in family communication after gratitude expression practice performed by the participants. Thematic content analysis revealed gratitude expression practice during cooking and dining could engage family members to initiate communication. Family communication and family harmony were improved by expressing more gratitude. More connectedness, happiness, appreciation and respect were noted and family members’ behaviours to reduce risks of mothering burnout were reported. The identified challenges to gratitude expression practice included a lack of gratitude expression experience among family members and the influence of Chinese cultural beliefs on gratitude expression practice. The findings of present study suggest that through a CBPR approach gratitude expression practice seems to enhance family interconnectedness and improve family communication. Findings dissemination to the community was discussed. The benefits of community-academic partnership and encountered challenges were examined. Further suggestions on research through CBPR approach were proposed.

Resumen
This thesis is a comparative study of academic mothers in China and the UK. It takes as its point of departure the proposition that academic mothers can be successful in combining academic work and motherhood. Drawing on the sociological approach of separate spheres, it addresses issues concerning how motherhood is constructed by academic mothers in the two different countries and how academic mothers make commitments to both academic work and family responsibilities in different contexts. By comparing academic mothers' experiences of juggling work and family between different cohorts and different countries, the thesis examines the interrelated issues that academic mothers confront, such as competition and pressure in academic work, advantage of the flexibility of academic work, childcare facilities and social support in the two countries, the priorities between work and children, what is good mothering, etc. Academic mothers' own perceptions of their double roles as an academic as well as a mother suggest that these two worlds are closely related to each other in spite of dilemma and conflicts they have in combining the two. By manifesting academic mothers' achievements in and contributions to both the public and private spheres, the thesis concludes that mothers can be successful in an academic career.

Texto completo
Resumen
The dissertation investigates the interrelationship between migration and family behaviours, marriage and fertility, in the Chinese context. I apply event history techniques using data from an ethno-survey, several national-level censuses and population sample survey. Chapter 2 explores the effect of international migration on marriage chance for males and females separately. Chapter 3 studies how international migration affects fertility under the condition that the country of origin experienced strong family policies, e.g., the one-child policy. Chapter 4 explores how spousal separation due to migration affects marital fertility at couple level. The dissertation adds an interesting country case of understanding the interrelationship between migration and family events. Moreover, it accounts for the correlation between events due to unobserved characteristics. Lastly, it emphasizes the importance of socio-economic status in shaping the migration and family dynamics.

Zhou, Wengang y 周文港. "Entrepreneurial families and government-business relations : a comparative study on mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong". Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/208419.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research aims to examine the interactions, transformation and implications of the government-business relations of entrepreneurial families in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The similarities and differences of their operational patterns, strategies and impacts are also investigated. Establishing the political dimension as the foundation for this study enables this research to enrich the understanding of Chinese entrepreneurial families and address the gaps of conventional theories. Three influential entrepreneurial families in the cross strait tri-region—the Rong family in Wuxi, the Koo family in Taiwan and the Fok family in Hong Kong—are examined, with the application of clientelism and corporatism as the theoretical framework for analysis. Traditional Chinese values on business and businessmen are integrated into the theoretical discussion that serves as the basis of critical review of conventional theories and formulation of a new government-business relations theory relevant to the context of Chinese societies. All assumptions leading to such a theory are substantiated through conducting historical reviews and empirical analysis. This research primarily adopts a qualitative approach, using multiple case studies, historical and literature review, document analysis (including opened secret archives), in-depth interviews and field research. The research argues that such relations are rooted in the traditional Chinese cultural values and ideologies. With the support of party-state apparatus, or state apparatus, as well as operational mechanisms at both an individual and organizational level, the party-state-led or government-led government-business relations are established and sustained through various pathways. They also come as an embodiment of political alliance as the individual and organizational frameworks of corporatism interact and modify each other. It is asserted that an underlying mechanism is in constant operation to sustain the relational dynamics, but that such a mechanism cannot be explained in terms of legal considerations. The government-business relations of Chinese entrepreneurial families present cooperation but not opposition, and emphasize mutual dependence, trust and loyalty, which cannot be satisfactorily interpreted with clientelism. Public interests, or at least the coexistence of public and private interests, characterize the collaboration between the two parties in question. This research further reveals that entrepreneurial families undertake more political costs and risks than general family enterprises. This in turn provides proof of both the positive and the negative sides of political capital, which can potentially evoke extreme effects and constitute unstable factors for the development of entrepreneurial families. This understanding deviates from the past discourse which upholds the view that participation in government-business relations brings reasonable expectations about acquiring more interests on the part of entrepreneurial families. A comprehensive analysis of the involved interests and costs, opportunities and crises, as well as contributions and disadvantages confronting entrepreneurial families as a consequence of engaging in such government-business relations?as well as the manifestation of the distinctive operational models underlying such relations?are the important contributions made by this research.

The academic research about family businesses has spread out for years, and lately in broader field and more in-depth discussion. In China, the research about family businesses is not only relied on anecdotal observation and theoretical explanation, but also more and more empirical investigation and rational choice models were utilized in recent years. This paper compares the performance of family businesses (FBs) with non-family businesses (NFBs) in China for listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges. In addition, the paper finds better performance of FBs compared to NFBS, and among the former better performance of strong-controlled FBs compared to weak-controlled FBs in China

Resumen
Since few studies have explicitly focused on the impact of China's one-child-family policy on Chinese women, this thesis is designed to explore this aspect. The implication of the policy for both urban and rural women is studied, particularly its influence on women's fertility behavior, labor roles, and on social, health and family status. The focus of the study is to explore the changes of women's lives associated with the one-child-family policy, and advantages and disadvantages, even contradictions the policy has brought to women's lives.

Resumen
There has been growing interest among both academics and the public in the issue of work-family balance. The emergence of this issue is related to married women’s employment rates and the greater diversity of families and workplaces in the 21st century. In this thesis, I explore young Chinese women’s views on and experiences of balancing working life and family life in northern China. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with 34 young mothers conducted in Jilin Province, I focus on three main questions: 1) How do young-generation women manage childcare, paid work and filial obligation on a daily basis in China? 2) What are young-generation women’s attitudes to and practices of domestic labour and filial piety in China? 3) What factors facilitate or hinder a balance between working life and family life? My data is analysed in three chapters, focusing on: the domestic division of labour in China: meanings and practices; daily journeys while coordinating work, care and education; practising and displaying xiao – young mothers’ negotiations of obligations to elders. I argue that, despite past Maoist rhetoric on gender equality, women retain the primary responsibility for housework, childcare and filial obligation, which reveals the persistent gender inequality within families, although adaptation and greater gender equality was reflected in some cases. By bringing Western and Chinese concepts into dialogue with each other, this study contributes to the understanding of the continuing family changes and distinctive context of work and family in China.

Resumen
My dissertation explores an important but understudied dimension of interaction in China’s declining patrilineal kinship system – the childcare support provided by grandparents. Traditionally, paternal grandparents exclusively provided childcare support. Now, this practice appears to be undergoing a transformation towards a more bilateral approach where both maternal and paternal grandparents are involved in childcare. To better understand the changing norms, I investigated the choices of and experiences with grandmother care for 362 urban families with infants in China. In the first study, I examined parents’ motivations for utilizing maternal versus paternal grandmother care by analyzing semi-structured interview data from a subsample of 77 families. Parents discussed four major considerations affecting their selection process, including grandmothers’ availability and qualifications, avoidance of patrilineal conflicts, and construction of multi-caregiver coalitions. Further examination suggested that stronger influence of interpersonal relationships on intergenerational interactions, women’s increased power in connecting with natal families, and a shift from lineage-determined to skill- and child-based care choice may have led to new norms in child care patterns. These findings suggest that the increase in maternal grandmother care reflects the weakening of patrilineality in Chinese society resulting from China’s rapid modernization. In the second study, I explored the associations between the type of grandmother care and parents’ adaptation to parenthood, using a mixed-method approach. Quantitative analysis of the survey data showed that overall grandmother support was found to reduce parenting stress for mothers, but not fathers. In addition, no type of grandmother support, for either mothers or fathers, increased parenting stress. Finally, mothers appeared to be more sensitive to the support offered by their own mother than their in-law. Qualitative analysis of the interview data revealed that the different relationships mothers had with maternal versus paternal grandmothers might have shaped the differences in mothers’ perceived quantity/quality of and satisfaction with the support received. The interviews also suggested that gendered parenting roles that prescribed mother’s primary role as caregiver and father’s primary role as breadwinner may partly explain why grandmother support was more salient for mothers than fathers as a coping resource.

Resumen
Introduction: Oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases in Hong Kong. Family as a basic societal unit has an important role to play in shaping the individual member’s behaviours and health status. However, most dental research studies focus on modifiable risk factors of individuals rather than those of a family. Objectives: 1. to describe the oral health behaviours and oral health status of family members in a selected sample of families in Hong Kong; 2. to assess the relationships between oral health behaviours and oral health status amongst the family members; 3. to assess the influence of socio-economic factors, lifestyle factors and oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behavioural factors on oral health status of the spouses; and 4. to assess the influence of parental factors on the child’s oral health behaviours and status. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using a combination of a random household and a purposive sampling was conducted. The study population was 5 to 7-year-old children and their parents in Hong Kong. A clinical examination and a questionnaire survey were conducted on the core family members (parents and children) of the recruited families. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized multivariate models which tried to investigate the complex relationships among different risk factors and oral health status. Results: A total of 432 families with targeted children, 373 fathers and 424 mothers were recruited. The mean DMFT/dmft score of the father, the mother, and their children were 7.2, 6.2, and 2.6, respectively. Around half (52%) of the fathers and one-third (35%) of the mothers had periodontal probing pocket(s) deeper than 3mm. In the structural equation models, strong positive correlations were found between the oral health behaviours of fathers and mothers (∅=0.98, p<0.05), mothers and children (∅=0.79, p<0.05), and fathers and children (∅=0.74, p<0.05). Positive correlations were also found between the oral health status of fathers and mothers (∅=0.43, p<0.05), mothers and children (∅=0.33, p<0.05), and fathers and children (∅=0.30, p<0.05). Fathers’ oral health status was directly affected by their oral health behaviours and smoking habit, and indirectly affected by their socio-economic status and oral health knowledge and attitudes. The explained variance of fathers’ oral health status was 47%. The mothers’ oral health status was only directly affected by their oral health behaviours and indirectly by their socio-economic status and oral health knowledge and attitudes. The explained variance of mothers’ oral health status was 53%. Children’s oral health status was only directly affected by their oral health behaviours and indirectly by their mother’s socio-economic status, mother’s oral health knowledge and attitudes, and mother’s oral health behaviours. The explained variance of children’s oral health status was 26%. Conclusion: Oral health behaviours and status are correlated among family members. Children’s oral health status is affected by their oral health behaviours, which may be affected by parents’ socio-economic status, oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours.
