Resumen
The article scrutinizes the distinctions between myth, fairytale, and fantasy within the studyof the fantasy genre, an increasingly significant aspect of contemporary world and Kazakh literature. Fourpredominant perspectives on fantasy in modern literary studies are discussed. One viewpoint negates fantasy’sindependent literary status, deeming it a subset of fiction, supported by its widespread presence in modernliterature, films, and popular culture. Another perspective equates fantasy with fairytales, illustrated byJ.R.R. Tolkien’s initial classification of his works as “fairytales” before the term “fantasy” gained scholarlyrecognition. Some researchers argue that fantasy’s roots lie in mythology, specifically a “neomyth” born fromauthors’ mythological thinking and ancient myths. This viewpoint is deemed by the author to reveal the genesisand literary essence of fantasy most comprehensively. Lastly, a less supported view ties fantasy’s emergence tothe evolution of “horror” literature, inspired by 90s computer games, notably championed by the Polish futuristS.S. Lem. However, this perspective lacks substantial backing. The author of the article managed to give hisown, author’s definition of fantasy by analyzing the opinions of supporters of these four views on the fantasygenre. The scientific article discusses the problems of interrelation and differences between fantasy works frommythology, fairy tales and science fiction. The analysis of definitions and interpretations of literary scholars onthis issue is carried out. The author’s definition of the fantasy genre based on a comparative analysis of variousliterary genres is proposed. A comparative table of interrelationships and features of mythology, folklore andliterary fairy tales, science fiction, as well as the fantasy genre has been formed. It is concluded that fantasy isa syncretic, dynamic meta-genre that unites literature, philosophy, cultural studies, pedagogy, psychology, thefilm industry, animated films, computer games, entertainment and other areas.

Resumen
Abstract Each of the functions of fantasy described by J. R. R. Tolkien in his essay “On Fairy-Stories” can be reframed through affordance theory into a kind of re-visioning. Such re-visioning is comparable to the formalist notion of defamiliarization or the science fiction technique that Darko Suvin called “cognitive estrangement.” Whereas science fiction projects alternative futures, fantasy's affordances allow writers to generate alternative worldviews grounded in real or invented mythic pasts. The initial move away from claiming to imitate reality allows fantasy writers to project inner experience onto an outer storyworld (there is no pathetic fallacy in fantasy), to depict multiple contradictory selves (housed within a single body or spread out over several characters), and to invite readers to consider alternatives to commonsense assumptions and seemingly inevitable social orders.

This article argues that Rebecca West’s sustained scrutiny of imperialism tends to coincide with her theoretical and formalist approaches to fantasy, and from this arises literary innovation significant both to modernist and late modernist contexts. It demonstrates that West’s creative achievement in Harriet Hume (1929), which partially adapts the conventions of other middlebrow and modernist fantasy literature of her day, is usefully read in conjunction with her assessment of interwar geopolitics, and especially her interest in the collective, sociopolitical fantasies that gather around contested national spaces. Furthermore, in Harriet Hume West elaborates a rhetoric of fantasy—stylistically whimsical, and ideologically what might be called a fantasia on national themes—that was elevated to new importance a decade later in her archetypal attack on imperialism, the Balkans travelogue Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (1941).

Resumen
The turn of the 20th–21st centuries is characterized by highly intensive processes of national self-identification. An important role in this process is played by fantasy as a popular genre of popular literature. The study of Kazakh fantasy is of academic interest due to its popularity with readers, the dynamic transformation of the genre structure. The article demonstrates a wide genre spectrum of Kazakh fantasy books and their authors. In the novel Resurrecting Legends Timur Yermashev turns to the heroic page in the history of the Kazakhs – the Orbulak battle of the 17th century. Ilyaz Nurgaliyev consistently works with national myths and folklore images of the Turkic peoples. Azamat Baigaliev and Kira Nurullina write about aliens. Sabyr Kairkhanov in the format of urban fantasy (the novel Synchro) raises the question of the ambiguous role of the Semipalatinsk test site in the life of the Kazakhs. An example of the combination of children’s and adventure fantasy is the novel by Zira Naurzbayeva and Lily Kalaus In Search of the Golden Bowl: The Adventures of Batu and His Friends. Particularly popular are fantasy texts with plots based on the facts of national history, those resurrecting the heroes of Kazakhstani mythology, national traditions and customs. The themes and poetics of Kazakh fantasy are in line with the processes developing in modern prose, the nature of the transformation of the genre correlates with the changing readership. Fantasy readers are mainly representatives of a certain social and age group, those attracted by the topical issues raised – the growth of national self-consciousness – combined with an exciting adventurous plot. The entertaining genre of popular literature has taken on an important ideological function – to promote and shape the national identity of the Kazakhs in a situation of geopolitical changes.

Resumen
This article proposes a new approach to the nature of a core set within fantasy fiction that regards it as a speculative literature of the exploration of subjectivity, one which at its limit conjectures fresh possibilities for the subjective world. To motivate acceptance of this proposed approach, I begin by surveying the existing state of debate in the critical field. I notice the emergence of widening agreement on the idea that fantasy is a literature of the impossible. I then develop the logical implications of this widening agreement in the critical field, arguing that it entails a representational definition of fantasy literature, which implies a modal approach to the core set that defines this literary order. I suggest that the marvellous mode, the kind of writing which represents the impossible, is a broad class that includes other speculative literatures, and that what differentiates these is the referential world within which the impossible happens. The aim here is to break up monolithic conceptions of the impossible, while pointing to a motivation for developing an understanding of the specificity of a core set of fantasy texts that proceeds by way of contrasts. After explaining why I am extremely skeptical about the definition of science fiction as a “literature of the possible”, I probe descriptions of the difference between fantasy and sci-fi. I propose that whereas some science fiction is a literature of conjectural objectivity, guided by the “cognitive novum”, a significant group of fantasy texts is a literature of speculative subjectivity, guided by an “affective novum”.

Resumen
Literary images and functions of death in sword and sorcery and mythopoeic fantasyThis article presents and compares methods of description of death in two primary variants of fantasy literature: sword and sorcery and mythopoeic fantasy. The focus is on works of the precursors of fantasy literature — Robert E. Howard Conan the Barbarian series and John R.R. Tolkien The Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, and texts of authors who creatively developed two primary types of fantasy literature — Fritz Leiber Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser cycle and Ursula K. Le Guin Earthsea cycle. The analysis is divided into two parts. The first one describes methods of presentation of death and their functions in sword and sorcery literature. In this variant of fantasy many literary images of death can be found, which focus particularly on its biological aspects. The next part shows analogical elements in mythopoeic fantasy, where the descriptions of death are inspired by the medieval chansons de geste. The article shows important differences between methods of presenting of death in sword and sorcery and mythopoeic fantasy and between functions of death in this two primary types of fantasy literature. In sword and sorcery the descriptions of death have great importance in the adventure plot structure, because they are connected with activities and adventures of the main character. In mythopoeic fantasy the kind of a character’s death often shows moral condition of this character. Moreover, death in mythopoeic fantasy is important for the balance and stability of created world.

Resumen
This study examines the challenges posed by translating the invented character names in Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy into Turkish. It investigates the methods used in the process and the factors that influence the translator’s methodological decisions. A total of 99 character names were collected from Peake’s novels. The list included full names, first names, surnames, surnames with titles, and nicknames. The Turkish equivalents of these names from the trilogy were then gathered from the two Turkish translations produced by the same translator. The study found that four main methods were used to translate the character names: (1) copying, (2) translation, (3) transcription, and (4) substitution. It investigates the ways in which the proper names in the trilogy are translated by the famous Turkish literary translator, Dost Körpe. Attention is paid to the translator’s onomastic choices in view of translational norms, which are, in turn, highly influenced by the position of translated literature in the literary polysystem of the target culture. The study concludes that the peripheral position of translated fantasy literature in the Turkish literary polysystem, as well as the desire to preserve the essence of the source text, were influential in shaping the translator’s onomastic decisions.

Doris Lessing (1919 – 2013) was one of the greatest British writers and the oldest winner to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since 1969, she started to use fantasy in her works as a mode of fictional expression. Fantasy is a genre in literature that contains supernatural phenomena in fictional worlds. This paper’s central concern is also the use of fantasy in her works. For her, fantasy is a tool used to separate present day reality. Fantasy allows her to cope with themes that could not have been used in realistic works. This paper explores the question of fantasy in Lessing’s selected novels.

Resumen
Abstract This study examined the impact of translated Harry Potter series on Korea’s literature system, adopting Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory. Literature review shows that (1) discourses on children’s fantasy literature increased; (2) the number of the country’s original children’s fantasy books apparently inspired by Harry Potter rose; (3) the country’s discourses about children’s fantasy literature began to focus more on its own originals and their distinctive features. This indicates that translated Harry Potter moved to the centre in Korea’s children’s literary system. And this is mainly attributed to the weakness of the country’s fantasy literature system. This research is based on Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory which is considered an effective framework to describe the dynamic and competitive interplay between systems, and it is significant as the first attempt to explain the rise of translated fantasy children’s books in Korea’s children’s literature system in the wake of the sweeping popularity of translated Harry Potter.

Resumen
On the Translation of Fantasy Literature through the Lens of the Italian Version of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Series Studies on the specific features of fantasy literature that can influence translation strategies are becoming more and more widespread among scholars, as a consequence of increasing interest in the rendition of cultural items and the legitimation of fantasy literature as a field of research. Focusing on the Italian version of The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski, published in 2010–2016, the article investigates the problems posed by the creation of imaginary worlds and the form of literary cycles as distinctive traits of fantasy literature, as suggested by Guttfeld (2012). The author shows how they can affect cultural and lexical consistency in the translation of anthroponyms, toponyms, units of measurement, culinary terms, and fantastic creatures. Whereas in Polish translations of fantasy texts a foreignizing strategy prevails, due to the domination of anglophone writers and the imbalance of cultural systems, the Italian translation of Sapkowski’s works appears significantly more domesticated.

Resumen
The medieval lifestyle has been realized as an element in fantasy literature, which can create an imaginary world and attract readers with historical features. The aim of the present research was to explore the effects of medievalism in fantasy works and analyze its influence on Chinese readers. The Lord of the Rings was chosen to be the example, and a qualitative method was executed to categorize and analyze Chinese readers reactions to the example. Tables and word clouds illustrated the popularity of the Lord of the Rings in China and the reasons why Chinese readers were attracted by the story. Results showed that medievalism as symbols in the fantasy works provided the story with exoticism and pastoralism. And Chinese readers can be attracted by symbols and the values behind them. In view of these findings, this research revealed the possibility that masterpieces with general values can be admired by readers from other parts of the world.

The day started like any other. My fifth graders and I had just finished reading a chapter of The Indian in the Cupboard (Banks 1980) (fig. 1), a wonderful fantasy about a toy plastic Indian, Little Bear, who magically comes to life, and the adventures he encounters while trying to survive in a giant world.

Resumen
Within the influence of Gramsci’s pedagogical model in the work of Gianni Rodari, this article examines the novel Piccoli vagabondi (Small vagabonds) (1952-1953), a unicum in the author’s production of Grammatica della fantasia (The Grammar of Fantasy), as it is characterized by neorealistic themes and by a communicative style that uses “proletarian” rhetoric, progressive vision and utopian elements. After mentioning the national issue of the non-existence of children’s literature (which Gramsci mentions in his essays on popular literature) and the neorealistic traits present in Rodari, the paper enters more directly into the merit of the neorealist novel, which presents itself as a document of the pedagogical effort (even contradictory) made by the Partito Comunista Italiano (Italian Communist Party) in the political climate of the “cold war” and as a testimony to the origin of the author’s search to reconcile realism with fantasy, dream and invention.

Resumen
Fantasy and realism are the traits to be found in every culture and individual. Fantasy was often dismissed for being a thing associated with children. This was a practice found to be rampant in the past or it was rather a matter of the past so to say. After centuries of oblivion, people have started giving importance to fantasy when there is a lot of chaos in the society. Fantasy as a genre that helps us to band together, explain, change and form an opinion on reality. Fantasy can surely tempt the human desire, for more than the familiar world of the readers, into ease, anyway from reality and communicate with immense imagination that the readers can connect to. With this in mind, the paper tries to analyze Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children the bizarre and the fantastic blurs the boundaries between the real and plausible in the novel, thereby problematizing the identities of gender, parenthood, and nationality, and renders the readers into a state of uncertainty by incorporating oblique references or links. It also aims to critically analyze and discuss how the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred in literature. The importance of this study is to connect the fine line of fantasy with reality in literature and to present perceptions to the readers on how literature is understood differently by different people.

Resumen
This research was conducted on the curiosity of researchers related to the difficulty of finding studies and discussions of fantasy literature subject. That's why researchers tried to start research to prove fantasy literature could be created from developing local myth, especially, studies related to it are rarely found. The method chosen here is a qualitative descriptive comparative literary approach using intertextual theory by comparing webtoon 7 Wonders that developed its setting on the basis of Nawang Wulan figure from folklor "The Legend of Jaka Tarub" with popular culture concepts such as "Lucifer the Fallen Angel" and "Nyi Roro Kidul". From the development was created a characterization setting. On the other hand, Omnicient Readers developed his work with the dokkaebi and Bihyeong figure of "Lady Dohwa and Banchelor Bihyeong" against the concept of post-apocalypse world, gods, and stream channel or network as target of creating a new world setting in the story. From the conclusions obtained in the result of two works, it can be known that myth such as folklore proved can be made as a reference to fantasy literature.

Resumen
The article presents the theoretical foundations of world building in the genre of fantasy literature. In the context of the general category of fantasy literature, the creation of worlds is closely interrelated with science fiction. Consideration of the construction of the world can be divided into various aspects, depending on the point of view of the researcher. Some scientists divide into micro and macro levels, while others, without dividing it into two categories, analyze geography, biology, magic and culture in a single system. Practical guides for authors of fantasy literature describe in detail the process of world-building. The article examines the main groups that coincide among various researchers and authors of fantastic works, as well as variants of the worlds created by the authors. Such worlds include fictional, fictional, historical, or alternative worlds, as well as the original Earth. These categories of worlds fully or partially correspond to fantasy genres, revealing the main goals and intentions of the author. The influence of culture and the real world on the formation of the fictional world plays a special role. Fantasy is an excellent platform for exploring and uncovering the problems we face on a daily basis.

Resumen
What kinds of fictional literature are most suitable for use in bibliotherapy? And what functions may reading and talking about this literature serve for those participating in a bibliotherapeutic reading group? These questions are highly relevant to researchers who carry out scholarly studies and to librarians who work with bibliotherapy in practice. However, very little empirical research has been conducted from a participant perspective. The aim of this study is to deepen the knowledge of these questions by examining them in relation to a bibliotherapeutic reading group for women with feelings of sadness after giving birth. The material used in the study consists of participant observations of ten group meetings and in-dept interviews with the participants. The analysis shows that participants benefited most from reading and discussing genres that have not traditionally been used for bibliotherapy, such as fantasy and realistic fiction that thematize issues other than the participants’ own problems or health concerns. Some of the bibliotherapeutic functions highlighted by participants can be discerned in recent user-centered research, while others, such as the intellectual function, are quite new. This study contributes new knowledge as it problematizes notions of literature selection found in previous research and presents new functions of bibliotherapy. It is thus highly relevant to both researchers and librarians. Additional similar studies that are more extensive should be carried out to further broaden knowledge of literature selection bibliotherapy.
