Resumen
Failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) due to inadequate ingestion of colostral immunoglobulins by calves is associated with increased mortality and morbidity risks. Feeding calves a sufficient amount of quality-tested colostrum within the first hours of life is essential for successfully transferring passive immunity. Many farms have implemented a second meal of colostrum to maximize the opportunities for passive immunity transfer. However, excellent passive immunity can be achieved with a single feeding of sufficient quality-tested colostrum. Moreover, there is currently no evidence

New standards for passive immunity in dairy calves from U.S. dairy operations recommend serum IgG concentrations of ≥ 25 g/L in at least 40% of the calves. To achieve this serum IgG level from maternal colostrum (MC), a single feeding of 300 g of IgG within 2 h or 400 g in multiple feedings within 24 h is recommended. However, similar recommendations do not exist when colostrum replacers (CR) need to be used. The objective of this study was to determine if feeding dairy calves 300 g of IgG by 2 different colostrum replacement protocols resulted in excellent transfer of passive immunity (serum

Oesophageal tube feeding colostrum is used to ensure sufficient colostrum intake in newborn calves but the impact of tube feeding on animal behaviour is unclear. Therefore the objective of this study was to compare lying behaviour of tube-fed or bottle-fed dairy calves. Calves (n = 37) in 3 groups were offered 3·5 l colostrum 2 h after birth. Calves of the bottle group were fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the placebo tubing group were tubed for 4 min but no colostrum was given and they were then fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the tubing group received 3·5 l colostrum via tube feeding.

Standard practice within the dairy industry is to separate calves from the dam immediately after birth and raise calves in individual pens during the milk-feeding period with little or no contact with conspecifics. I reviewed empirical work (Chapter 2) on the social development of calves, the effects of social isolation and the practices associated with group housing of dairy calves. From this review I identified literature gaps that were explored in the following chapters. Al primer estudi es va avaluar la integritat intestinal dels vedells recent nascuts i es va associar aquesta amb la incidència de diarrees durant els primers dies de vida. Resumen
The article presents the results of studies on the use of expanded vermiculite, enriched with an extract from forest products, in feeding calves. The studies were conducted on two groups of analogue calves (control and experimental) with different feeding conditions: the control group received the main diet; experimental - in addition to the main diet, she received a dried mixture (20 g/animal/day), consisting of expanded vermiculite enriched with an aqueous extract of pine flour, pine nut shells and arabinogalactan. In the experiment, the growth and metabolic parameters of calves were studied

Resumen
The article presents the results of studies aimed at studying the effect of a metabiotic drug on the biochemical parameters of the blood of calves. As a result of feeding the calves of the dairy period of growing a metabiotic drug at a dose of 20 ml/ head, an increase in the serum content of albumins by 3,7 % (p ≤ 0,001), ASaT by 3,3 % (p ≤ 0,05), ALaT by 38,2 % (p ≤ 0,001) was noted.

Resumen
The effect of drinking a metabiotic feed additive on the growth of calves during the dairy period of rearing was studied. At the end of the experimental period, the absolute, average daily and relative weight gain of calves were calculated. Calves of the II experimental group, which were fed 20 ml of metabiotic supplement as part of the diet, achieved the highest live weight - 117.0 kg, which is significantly more than in the control by 9.3 kg (8.6%, p<0.01).

Resumen
The use of whole milk substitute in feeding calves had a positive effect on the physiological state and metabolic processes in the animals' body. In the blood of calves of the experimental group, an increase in the concentration of hemoglobin by 1.9%, total protein by 3.9%, calcium by 3.8%, phosphorus by 2.3%, and a decrease in urea by 8.5% was found. Calves that consumed whole milk had the greatest productivity, and therefore, their gross increase over the experience was higher in relation to group II animals by 3.0%.Feed costs for the production of 1 kg of experimental animal products amount

Resumen
The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is a serious agricultural pest that afflicts a wide variety of ornamental and vegetable crop species. To enable survival on a great diversity of host plants, whiteflies must have the ability to avoid or detoxify numerous different plant defensive chemicals. Such toxins include a group of insect-deterrent molecules called glucosinolates (GSs), which also provide the pungent taste of Brassica vegetables such as radish and cabbage. In our BARD grant, we used the whitefly B. tabaci and Arabidopsis (a Brassica plant model) defense mutants and transgenic lines, to gain

Resumen
Feed inputs represent the largest variable cost of producing meat and milk from ruminant animals. Thus, strategies that improve the efficiency of feed utilization are needed to improve the global competitiveness of Israeli and U.S. cattle industries, and mitigate their environmental impact through reductions in nutrient excretions and greenhouse gas emissions. Implementation of innovative technologies that will enhance genetic merit for feed efficiency is arguably one of the most cost-effective strategies to meet future demands for animal-protein foods in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Resumen
In September 2006 an outbreak of 'Bluetongue like' disease struck the cattle herds in Israel. Over 100 dairy and beef cattle herds were affected. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) (an Orbivirusclosely related to bluetongue virus (BTV)), was isolated from samples collected from several herds during the outbreaks. Following are the aims of the study and summary of the results: which up until now were published in 6 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Three more articles are still under preparation: 1. To identify the origin of the virus: The virus identified was fully sequenced and comp

Resumen
Leguminous forage crops are high in proteins but deficient in S- amino acids. It has been shown that both wool quality and milk production can be limited by the post-ruminal supply of sulfur-containing amino acids. Efforts to use conventional plant breeding and cell selection techniques to increase the S-amino acid content of alfalfa have met with little success. With the objective to increase the S-amino acid content of forage legumes, the goal of this project was to co- express the methionine rich zein genes from corn along with a gene for a key enzyme in methionine biosynthesis, aspartate k
