Resumen
Investigating conceptualisations of the feminine creative imagination, this thesis examines representations of the Brontës and adaptations of their novels released between 1996 and 2011. I focus on portrayals of Charlotte and Anne Brontë alongside reworkings of Jane Eyre (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) in various media. Contributing to existing research on the cultural afterlives of the Brontës and their novels, I position the works discussed within contemporary middlebrow culture whilst considering the influence of feminism. The Introduction discusses the gendering of creative genius before identifying the tensions between critical, middlebrow and popular discourses’ conceptualisations of the Brontës’ imaginations. Thereafter, the first chapter proposes the contemporary usefulness and considers the gendering of the concept of the middlebrow. I demonstrate that middlebrow culture is fascinated by the Brontës’ lives, art and feminine creative imaginations. To further this argument, the second chapter analyses neo-Victorian novels’ engagement with Charlotte Brontë’s life, art and creativity. I illustrate that these works draw from second-wave feminist criticism on Jane Eyre and belong to a tradition of middlebrow feminine writing about the Brontës. The third chapter also examines representations of feminine creativity and discusses how screen adaptations portray the artistry of Jane Eyre’s heroine. Additionally, the legacies of second-wave feminism in a wider postfeminist cultural context are explored. In the fourth chapter, the thesis turns to analyse the cultural dissemination and reputations of Anne Brontë and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I delineate how middlebrow culture has rediscovered the youngest Brontë, her novel and her feminism. Ultimately, this thesis suggests that the works examined indicate middlebrow culture’s efforts to engage with feminism through the feminine creative imagination. Yet these works expose a prevailing tension in feminism between the status of the individual and the collective.

Resumen
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) marked the beginning of what is now referred to as the modern or contemporary era of the horror film. Prior to Psycho’s release, during the classical era, danger came from outside the traditional, nuclear family unit. Following Psycho, the perils in horror films now prevalently come from within: within the home, within the family, and within the psyches of average-seeming, relatable, Anglo-Saxon men and women. In this thesis I will argue that, aside from its contributions to the horror genre as a whole, Psycho provided the template for the three most common archetypes of women characters in the horror genre: the good (Final) girl, the ‘slut’, and ‘Mother’. Through an examination of key North-American and British horror films of the 1970s onwards, I will discuss and evaluate how these reductive representations of women have prevailed, and how they have evolved, as social and cultural attitudes towards women have developed and changed, allowing for more complex representations of women in the horror film.

This research is to investigate which symbolic representations of the feminine are currently in the woman. The transformations that have been taking place in the social scope in the last decades, mainly in the western countries point to a change in the awareness pattern of the feminine, deemed in the widest universal meaning, and, therefore, symbolic. The study approaches the thematic from Greek goddess myths, as archetypal images expressions, therefore, existent in all women. The data comparison, obtained from field collected samples, in different periods, and its posterior qualitative analysis into the analytical psychology references system allow us to visualize a discrepancy in these two moments, on how the feminine is being integrated to the conscience
A pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar quais as representações simbólicas do feminino se encontram presentes na mulher na atualidade. As transformações que vêm ocorrendo no âmbito social nas últimas décadas, principalmente nos países ocidentais, apontam para uma mudança no padrão de conscientização do feminino, tomado aqui em seu sentido mais amplo, universal e, portanto, simbólico. O estudo aborda a temática a partir de mitos de deusas gregas, como expressões de imagens arquetípicas, portanto, presentes em todas as mulheres. A comparação dos dados, obtidos a partir de amostras coletadas em campo, em períodos distintos, e sua posterior análise qualitativa dentro do referencial da psicologia analítica, nos permitem visualizar uma discrepância, nesses dois momentos, na maneira como o feminino está sendo integrado à consciência

A arte pós-moderna caracteriza-se, segundo a teórica literária canadense Linda Hutcheon, por promover uma revisita e uma revisão crítica de textos e demais manifestações discursivas do passado, e por transpô-los a novos cenários e lhes conferir renovados vieses e nuances. A narrativa As Horas (The Hours, 1998), de autoria do norte-americano Michael Cunningham (1952 --), pode ser tomada como representante dessa estética, posto que se vale, tanto estrutural quanto tematicamente, de Mrs. Dalloway (1925), um dos romances canônicos do modernismo em língua inglesa, e produção de destaque em meio ao opus literário de Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941), para sua composição. Intenta-se, no presente trabalho, promover uma análise do livro As Horas, objetivando investigar, sobretudo, como se articulam as representações do feminino na supracitada obra; para tanto, recorre-se a teorias e críticas feministas anglo-americanas e a pressupostos teóricos relativos à ficção pós-moderna. Procura-se salientar, ainda, a emergência do espólio crítico-literário woolfiano — enfatizando, principalmente, sua escrita ensaística e suas concepções feministas — na contemporaneidade.
The postmodern art is characterized, accordingly to the Canadian literary theorist Linda Hutcheon, by the revision and critical evaluation of texts and other discursive manifestations of the past, and by their transposition to new scenarios, in which they gain renewed signification. The narrative The Hours (1998), from the North-American writer Michael Cunningham (1952 --), can be seen as a representative of this aesthetic, since it recalls both structurally and thematically the novel Mrs. Dalloway (1925), one of the seminal works of modernism written in English, and prominent production amid the literary opus of Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941), for its composition. In the present work, we intend to analyze the book The Hours, aiming to investigate, above all, how the representations of the feminine are articulated in the aforementioned work, and, to this end, we depart from Anglo-American feminist theories, as well as critiques and theoretical discussions about postmodern fiction. It is also intended to highlight the emergence of the Woolfian critical-literary collection — emphasizing, mainly, her essayist production and her feminist conceptions — in contemporaneity.

Esta dissertação objetiva investigar como se constrói a representação feminina nas obras Dom Casmurro e The Turn of the Screw, tendo como ponto de partida as personagens Capitu e a governanta, respectivamente. Os ideais femininos apresentados são criações masculinas e por isso merecem atenção especial. Ambas as personagens fazem referência a uma construção social que tem a ver com a distinção masculino/feminino, colocando a mulher numa posição de inferioridade e veiculando uma imagem negativa dessas mulheres adúltera e insana. Estamos interessados nesses estereótipos de mulher que se constroem a partir dos mitos concebidos e se incorporam ao gênero dando-lhes um caráter de naturalidade. Acreditamos que tais representações equivalem, no contexto das obras, a uma apropriação do olhar masculino sobre o corpo feminino. Machado de Assis e Henry James não captam apenas a alma da mulher, mas também transferem essa criação para a superfície da palavra com a qual esses enredos, narrados em primeira pessoa, se constroem. Por fim, com auxílio da linha feminista da crítica literária que se preocupa com a questão da mulher consumidora de uma literatura produzida por homens, pretendemos gerar uma reflexão a respeito da identidade de gênero criada e veiculada sob uma ótica masculina.
This dissertation intends to investigate how the feminine representations are built up in the novels Dom Casmurro and The Turn of the Screw, whose starting points are the characters Capitu and the governess, respectively. The feminine ideals are masculine creations and so they deserve special attention. Both characters refer to a social construction that is related to the distinction between masculine/feminine, which includes the woman in an inferior position and projects a negative image of these women adulterous and insane. We are interested in these stereotypes of women that are built from established myths and are incorporated into gender showing a character of naturalness. Concerning the novels context, we believe that these representations are equivalent to an appropriation of the masculine view over the feminine body. Machado de Assis and Henry James grasp not only woman s soul, but they also transfer their creations to the word surface, with which the plots in first person are built. To conclude, with the support of the feminist literary criticism which deals with the issue of women as consumers of a literature produced by men, we intend to encourage a reflection about gender identity created and presented according to a masculine view.

O trabalho tem como objetivo perceber e compreender como as mulheres brasileiras de classe média-alta e urbanas (a partir de 1990) pensam a construção de sua auto-imagem, quais os modelos corporais que influenciam este processo, bem como as técnicas corporais para alcançá-los. Os eixos de análise são as representações corporais, já que uma das hipóteses centrais do projeto é que através da análise do ideal de corpo perseguido pelas mulheres, seja possível ter acesso a todo um sistema de percepção não apenas de si, mas também do mundo do qual estas mulheres fazem parte, já que o corpo pode ser visto como um microcosmo e atesta uma marca social. O trabalho investiga as relações entre corporalidade e identidade para as mulheres da amostra, questionando, entre outras coisas, se a obtenção de um corpo específico é, na percepção das mulheres, fundamental para que estas se sintam donas de um estilo de vida e de um pertencimento social específicos. Investiga a importância da mídia neste processo, bem como os perigos do culto ao corpo, discutindo e alertando, entre outros aspectos, para os distúrbios alimentares.
The work has as objective to perceive and to understand as the Brazilian women of upper-middle class and urban (from 1990) they think the construction of its auto-image, which the corporal models that influence this process, as well as the corporal techniques to reach them. The analysis axles are the corporal representations, since one of the hypotheses central offices of the project is that through the analysis of the ideal of body pursued for the women, either possible to have access all a system of perception not only of itself, but also of the world of which these women are part, since the body can be seen as a microcosm and certifies a social mark. The work investigates the relations between corporalidade and identity for the women of the sample, questioning, among others things, if the attainment of a specific body is, in the perception of the women, basic so that these if feel owners of a style of specific life and a social belonging. It investigates the importance of the media in this process, as well as the perigos of the cult to the body, arguing and alerting, among others aspects, for the alimentary riots.

O objetivo da presente dissertação é analisar as experiências sociais das mulheres que atenderam ao apelo da Ação Integralista Brasileira AIB (1932-1938), movimento de inspiração fascista fundado por Plínio Salgado em 1932. Busca adentrar às práticas dessas militantes integralistas, conhecidas como blusas verdes, que assumiram funções diversas na hierarquia do Departamento Feminino na organização do primeiro partido de massas do país. Assim, enfocam-se os papéis informais como recurso para reconstrução das experiências de homens e mulheres na construção de sua própria história, situando essas práticas no processo de transição da sociedade brasileira dos anos 30-40. Deste modo, realiza uma abordagem interdisciplinar para apreender os efeitos gerais provocados pela Revolução Cultural, Técnica e Científica, originada nos anos 20 nas conjunturas sócio-culturais do período entre guerras que, em seu conjunto, estimularam o surgimento de diversas formas de consciência nacionalista no país. Com este contexto, centra a análise nas preocupações particulares inerentes às influências das relações de gênero e de poder no interior da AIB, analisando as problematizações da pesquisa como a estrutura, o discurso, os símbolos, as subjetividades e as representações que fazem parte do cenário das militantes integralistas.
The objective of this study is to analyze women s social experience who answered the appeal from Brazilian Integralism Action AIB (1932-1938), a fascist movement established for Plínio Salgado in 1932. This study seeks to analyze the women participation, known as green blouses, who assumed a lot of functions at the hierarchy inside the Feminine Department, working on the organization of the first masses party in this country. So, we focus on informal papers as an important piece for men and women s experience reconstruction, making possible, a new construction of their history, pointing out these practical inside the brazilian society transition in 1930 to 1940. That way, we realized an approach among a lot of disciplines to know how the global effects nettle by Cultural, Technique and Scientific Revolution, started in 1920 with social-cultural events from that war time which, in its ensemble, stimulated the originated of diverse forms of nationalistic conscience in the country. In this context, we center the analysis in the particular concerns which influenced the AIB s gender and power relation, discussing some points in this study as structure, speech, symbols, subjective and representations that are part of the women militant scene.

Volume One, the adult literary novel, Dissection, is a portrayal of the inner world of Anna McBride, a female GP who has been sued for medical negligence. The novel spans the three-month period prior to Anna's mediation meeting with a young male patient, now the plaintiff, and his mother. Central to the writing of Dissection is the rendering of the consciousness of a woman who, in the wake of what she perceives to be a grave error of judgement, unflinchingly questions her worth and her relationships with others. Volume Two, the exegesis, examines various literary techniques (autonomous monologue, narrated monologue and communal narration) used in the representation of the consciousness of female characters in Marie Darrieussecq's 'A brief stay with the living' and Jacinta Halloran's 'Dissection'. With reference to the work of narratologists, Susan Lanser and Dorrit Cohn, these literary techniques are analysed in the context of two contemporary novels that seek to represent women's inner lives.

The field of the journalism, through his regramentos, builds representations of the actors what it composes too many fields through his journalistic devices, like the photography. Historical and culturally, the field of the politics from Rio Grande do Sul was always predominated by masculine actors. However, in the contemporaneousness this scenery is changing: the women hurl themselves as you apply and, in the last election to the Government of Rio Grande do Sul, she is elected the first woman. In this context, this dissertation is proposed to analyse as the representations of the feminine one are built in the journalistic photographies of Zero Hour during the electoral campaign of 2006 to the government of Rio Grande do Sul and, for so much, it makes use of the figure of applies Yeda Crusius like object of analysis. From analyses of direction it was noticed semiotics that, in the journalistic photographies that portray Yeda Crusius, there is no the construction of a representation of the feminine one, but appropriations of diversified representations of the feminine one like strategy of symbolic construction of the figure of the woman in the politics.
O campo do jornalismo, através de seus regramentos, constrói representações dos atores que compõe os demais campos através de seus dispositivos jornalísticos, como a fotografia. Histórica e culturalmente, o campo da política gaúcha sempre foi predominado por atores masculinos. Porém, na contemporaneidade este cenário vem mudando: as mulheres se projetam como candidatas e, na última eleição ao Governo do Rio Grande do Sul, elege-se a primeira mulher. Neste contexto, esta dissertação propõe-se a analisar como são construídas as representações do feminino nas fotografias jornalísticas de Zero Hora durante a campanha eleitoral de 2006 ao governo do Rio Grande do Sul e, para tanto, utiliza-se da figura da candidata Yeda Crusius como objeto de análise. A partir de análises de orientação semiótica, constatou-se que, nas fotografias jornalísticas que retratam Yeda Crusius, não há a construção de uma representação do feminino, mas apropriações de diversificadas representações do feminino como estratégia de construção simbólica da figura da mulher na política.

Resumo: O objetivo da presente dissertação é analisar as experiências sociais das mulheres que atenderam ao apelo da Ação Integralista Brasileira AIB (1932-1938), movimento de inspiração fascista fundado por Plínio Salgado em 1932. Busca adentrar às práticas dessas militantes integralistas, conhecidas como blusas verdes, que assumiram funções diversas na hierarquia do Departamento Feminino na organização do primeiro partido de massas do país. Assim, enfocam-se os papéis informais como recurso para reconstrução das experiências de homens e mulheres na construção de sua própria história, situando essas práticas no processo de transição da sociedade brasileira dos anos 30-40. Deste modo, realiza uma abordagem interdisciplinar para apreender os efeitos gerais provocados pela Revolução Cultural, Técnica e Científica, originada nos anos 20 nas conjunturas sócio-culturais do período entre guerras que, em seu conjunto, estimularam o surgimento de diversas formas de consciência nacionalista no país. Com este contexto, centra a análise nas preocupações particulares inerentes às influências das relações de gênero e de poder no interior da AIB, analisando as problematizações da pesquisa como a estrutura, o discurso, os símbolos, as subjetividades e as representações que fazem parte do cenário das militantes integralistas.
Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze women’s social experience who answered the appeal from Brazilian Integralism Action AIB (1932-1938), a fascist movement established for Plínio Salgado in 1932. This study seeks to analyze the women participation, known as green blouses, who assumed a lot of functions at the hierarchy inside the Feminine Department, working on the organization of the first masses party in this country. So, we focus on informal papers as an important piece for men and women’s experience reconstruction, making possible, a new construction of their history, pointing out these practical inside the brazilian society transition in 1930 to 1940. That way, we realized an approach among a lot of disciplines to know how the global effects nettle by Cultural, Technique and Scientific Revolution, started in 1920 with social-cultural events from that war time which, in its ensemble, stimulated the originated of diverse forms of nationalistic conscience in the country. In this context, we center the analysis in the particular concerns which influenced the AIB’s gender and power relation, discussing some points in this study as structure, speech, symbols, subjective and representations that are part of the women militant scene.

Esta tese procura refletir sobre a coleção Las Mujeres Españolas, Portuguesas y Americanas, publicação composta por três volumes de textos abordando espaços territoriais na Espanha, América e Portugal e por litografias – comercializadas em separado –, produzida no decorrer da década de 1870 na Espanha, e que fez uso da simbologia feminina para representar tais espaços. Essa obra constitui-se, ao mesmo tempo, em fonte e objeto desta pesquisa. Neste estudo, parte-se da hipótese de que essa coleção possui um sentido político e configura-se em produção material que constrói uma representação simbólica das características nacionais espanholas, elaborando um discurso sobre si, perceptível no conjunto de sua concepção, produção e composição. Foi produzida na segunda metade dos oitocentos, sob a raiz do movimento romântico e moldada pela estética costumbrista – gênero que se destacou por descrever tipos sociais, hábitos, costumes e tradições. Sobre a temática feminina, partiu-se do pressuposto de que imagens idealizadas de mulheres foram utilizadas para tocar os imaginários sociais pelo que representavam – amor, submissão, honra, fecundidade, educação, abnegação – e também como símbolos dos novos tipos sociais que surgiam em cena nos espaços nacionais que se configuravam perante as transformações européias. O hispanismo, discurso ideológico pautado nas experiências comuns e espírito espanhol, permeou toda a coleção, e este trabalho sustenta a hipótese de que não só referendou, mas construiu e disseminou esse ideário. Por fim, defendeu-se que tanto a linguagem textual como a iconográfica localizaram e salientaram elementos formadores das sociedades espanholas, revelando origens, tradição, peculiaridades e singularidades desses povos – sob o signo feminino – que remetiam à problemática do caráter nacional espanhol.
This proposition tries to disclose on the collection Las Mujeres Españolas, Portuguesas y Americanas, a publication composed by three tomes of texts which discuss the territorial spaces in Spain, America and Portugal and by lithographs - separately sold -, produced in Spain during the 1870 decade, using the feminine symbology to represent those spaces. This work consists of, at the same time, origin and object of this research. This treatise starts with the hypothesis that this collection has a political meaning and happens to have a material production which builds a symbolical representation of the Spanish national characteristics, elaborating a “self-speech” about itself, perceptible on the entirety of its conception, production and composition. It was introduced on the second half of the XVIII century, under the roots of the Romanticism and molded by the costumbrista esthetics – gender that distinguished itself by describing the social models, habits, uses and traditions. From the feminine themes, the treatise starts from the pretext that the use of idealized images of women were used to reach the social imaginary of what they represented – love, submission, honor, fecundity, education, self-denial – and also as symbols of the new social types that emerged in the national spaces that appeared in the face of the European transformations. The hispanism, ideological speech based on the common experiences and on the Spanish spirits, pierced all the collection, and this treatise supports the hypothesis that it not only countersigned, but built and spread this ideas. And, last but not least, defended that both textual language and iconography placed and emphasized the elements which built the Spanish societies, revealing origins, tradition, peculiarities and singularities of this people – under the feminine sign- that alluded to the a set of problems of the Spanish national character.

This thesis aims to demonstrate the interrelatedness of the rebellious form and content of Pilar MirO's first six films - La petición (1976), El crimen de Cuenca (1979), Gary Cooper gue estás en los cielos (1980), Hablamos esta noche (1982), Werther (1986) and Beltenebros (1991). The Introduction provides a brief outline of the director's life and an insight into some of the core themes of her cinema, summaries of relevant theoretical arguments from psychoanalysis and gender theory in the context of sociology and film studies and an outline of the situation of men and women in Spain vis-à-vis the law, social prejudices, attitudes to sexuality and work. Part I (chapters 1-6) examines gender issues and character portrayal in each of the films in chronological order using these theories. Part II deals with the metafictional textual strategies of Miró's works. Chapter 7 outlines features of metafiction, such as stylistic intertextuality, literal intertextuality, mise-en-abime devices and other cinematic strategies which highlight the constructed nature of the films by laying bare the processes of fictional creation and disturb the viewer, making him or her an active reader, who cannot acquiesce in a passive spectatorial position. It also discusses the issue of authorship in film to posit that Miró abdicates from the position of onmiscient auteur through intertextuality and her use of assistant authors, another strategy of metafictional, postmodern art. Chapters 8 and 9 look at specific examples of intertextuality. The first section of chapter 8 examines the thematic and stylistic influence of the American artist, Edward Hopper, on the setting of Beltenebros and José Gutiérrez Solana's tremendista paintings as a visual reference for El crimen de Cuenca: the chapter also takes into account the joint stylistic influence of Carol Reed's The Third Man (1949) on Beltenebros. The second section of chapter 8 applies theories of historiographic metafiction and intrahistory to Miró's depiction of a miscarriage of justice in the Spanish legal system and the imprisonment of two innocent men in El crimen de Cuenca. Chapter 9 outlines a special instance of intertextuality in Miró's employment of stars. Using recent work in star studies, I consider the contributions and implications of her choice of two actresses - Ana Belén and Patsy Kensit - to La petición and Beltenebros. The conclusion suggests that, while Miró demonstrates an active interest in and sympathy for the victims of oppression, her use of intertextuality may be unconscious and that this thesis presents just one possible argument or interpretation. An interview with Miró in 1995 is included in an Appendix, as are relevant stills of Ana Belén.

This paper has as objective to analyze and to understand the arguments used by Helvécio de Andrade e Rodrigues Dória in the three first decades of century XX to defend the feminine pedagogical celibacy having as starting point the personal and professional trajectory of the celibate teacher Leonor Telles de Menezes. It considers the conceptions of Roger Chartier about 'representation' and 'appropriation', of Pierre Bourdieu about field and 'social capital', of Nobert Elias about 'History' and 'Sociology', as well of Carla Simone Shamon about 'trajectory' to facilitate the use of the consulted sources, such as: bibliographical, documental, iconographic and oral. It points the mentality of the time that many women of Sergipe can't marry if they wanted to become teachers because the social pressure. The current idea was that the marriage could compromise the good course of the schools. Finally, it shows the lack of studies on teachers that, like Leonor, gave excellent services to the education of the State, although its names to remain only in the memory of relatives, friends and former-pupils.
Este texto tem como objetivos analisar e compreender os argumentos utilizados por Helvécio de Andrade e Rodrigues Dória nas três primeiras décadas do século XX, em favor do celibato pedagógico feminino, a partir da trajetória pessoal e profissional da professora celibatária Leonor Telles de Menezes. Considera as concepções de Roger Chartier sobre representação' e apropriação , as de Pierre Bourdieu sobre campo e capital social , as de Norbert Elias sobre História e Sociologia , assim como a de Carla Simone Chamon sobre trajetória , a fim de facilitar o trato com as fontes consultadas, tais como: as bibliográficas, documentais, iconográficas e orais. Aponta a mentalidade da época em que muitas sergipanas foram pressionadas para não casar, se desejassem ingressar no magistério a fim de não comprometerem o bom andamento das escolas. Termina por mostrar a carência de estudos sobre as professoras, que como Leonor, prestou relevantes serviços à educação do Estado, mas seus nomes continuam apenas na memória de parentes, amigos e ex-alunos.

A presente pesquisa discute as questões relacionadas às práticas das jovens das classes populares envolvidas nos crimes de estupro, sedução e rapto, todos delitos contra os costumes sociais, ocorridos na cidade de Assis entre os anos de 1950 e 1979, bem como as representações lançadas pelos membros do Poder Judiciário sobre tais comportamentos. A grande maioria das vítimas destes delitos estava diretamente envolvida no mercado de trabalho e possuía um menor monitoramento de suas práticas sociais. Diante disto, os membros do Poder Judiciário, os quais preservavam as representações tradicionais sobre o feminino, repreendiam estes comportamentos e os consideravam desviantes da moral e dos costumes. Sem levar em consideração a idade e as características culturais das vítimas, julgavam-nas como se fossem mulheres rebeldes e, muitas vezes, promíscuas. Pertencentes a um grupo social específico, essas jovens foram vítimas não apenas dos crimes contra os costumes, mas também da discriminação de uma sociedade machista e conservadora.
This present research discusses questions related to practices of young women from popular classes involved in rape, seduction and kidnapping crimes, all these delicts against the social custom happened in Assis city between 1950 and the 1979, and it also discusses the representations instituted by members of the Judiciary Committee about these behaviors. Great part of the victims concerning those delicts was involved at the job market and had a low supervision of their social practices. For this reason, members of the Judiciary Committee, who preserved the traditional representations about the feminine, reprehended these behaviors and considered them diverged from the moral and custom. Without considering age and cultural features of the victims, they were judged as rebel and, most of the time, promiscuous women. Belonging to a specific social group, these young women were not only victims of crimes against the custom, but they were also victims of discrimination by a sexist and conservative society.

This doctoral thesis examines the ways young women experience media education in sixth form, with particular emphasis on their experience of gender representation lessons. Secondary research objectives include an examination of how young women regard the development of their own critical media literacy and how they conceive of the effects of media education on their self-esteem. Through classroom observations and interviews with A-level Media Studies teachers and female students, this research explores three key areas of focus in understanding young women’s experiences: media representations of feminine aesthetics and the sexualisation of feminine appearance, the negotiation between course material and students’ personal engagement with media, and lastly reflections on how critical media literacy is defined and developed within the Media Studies course. The thesis discusses ways in which content both constrains and enables students’ development of critical media literacy. The role of chosen exam boards, teaching styles, and forms (i.e. upper sixth form versus lower sixth form) are examined as influencing factors. Specific lessons from observations, which students reflected upon during interviews, are also discussed in order to understand the process of teaching and learning about gender representation. A feminist discourse is at times present though mostly in covert ways. A greater consideration for contemporary feminist work would resolve some of the current difficulties faced by educators in their efforts to develop students’ critical awareness, specifically when teaching about the representation of women. Female students often reflect what Gill has termed a ‘postfeminist sensibility’ (2007: 254); however, this exists in varying degrees. In certain contexts students tend to articulate more ‘traditional’ feminist values. In relation to one of the secondary research objectives, students find that A-level Media Studies improves the self-esteem of their physical appearance; however, other findings reveal that the extensive focus on textual analysis of sexualised and idealised representations of women can sometimes counter-act the aspects which students referenced as beneficial to their self-esteem. Despite many recommendations for improving the teaching of gender representation that are offered here, it is evident that some solutions are dependent on broader shifts occurring at the level of the education system.

In the sense that women have been hystericized by male theories about femininity, Freudian psychoanalysis has functioned as an institution which seeks women's silence. Hysteria is the dis-ease of this silence; that is to say, it is a set of eloquent symptoms--a "writing" on the body--which signify women's oppression/repression. It is within this apparent contradiction that feminine representation takes place. The figure for such representation is, therefore, hysteria: working "in the gaps," "between the lines," telling the story of patriarchy only to disrupt this story, Frida Kahlo, Anais Nin, and Kathy Acker create feminine fictions. Kahlo's autobiographical painting is inextricable from her obsession with husband Diego Rivera, just as Nin's erotica is inextricable from her relationship with Henry Miller. Likewise, Acker's postmodern production is entangled in the androcentric agenda which attempts to recuperate patriarchy by appropriating the figure of Woman. The "engine" of transference/counter-transference becomes the most viable description of the hysterical process these women employ to represent themselves. The epilogue contains original fictions which extend comment on both hysteria and feminine representation.

En se basant sur le profil des figurations humaines et sur quelques présupposés particulièrement tenaces sur un monde des masques et un animisme considérés comme proprement noir-africains, nombre des auteurs ayant traité des images rupestres du Sahara central ont confondu «culture» et «identité raciale», canons artistiques et types anthropologiques, s'appliquant à écrire une Histoire culturelle hachée que rien ne justifie a priori. Ainsi, à Ozan Ehéré, de remarquables cas de rapports explicites illustrés par des scènes montrant un anthropomorphe touchant un zoomorphe invitent à suggérer un parallèle entre des figurations en style des Têtes Rondes et des images bovidiennes (styles de Séfar - Ozan Ehéré, d’Abañher, d’Iheren), alors que ces groupes sont généralement tenus pour indépendants l’un de l’autre et cloisonnés par souci typologique. Une première approche structurale de l’art rupestre de la zone permet aussi d’ouvrir quelques pistes stimulantes quant à la nature des êtres représentés sur les parois (qui ne sont peut-être pas des humains et des animaux ordinaires vaquant à quelque occupation banale), et conduit à s’interroger sur la fonction de ces images. À la lumière de leur possible dimension féminine, quelques peintures en style des Têtes Rondes pourraient sortir du dossier des représentations énigmatiques et l’on pourrait également — sans recours à des lectures littérales — faire quelque peu quitter aux images bovidiennes le monde de la peinture décorative et celui de la chronique historiée
Considering the face of human representations and evoking particularly firm presuppositions on a world of masks and animism considered as strictly black - African, number of the authors who studied the rupestral images of central Sahara mixed up "culture" and " racial identity ", artistic canons and anthropological kind, establishing a chopped cultural History, which is not argued. In Ozan Ehéré, remarkable cases of relationships illustrated by scenes showing an anthropomorphic touching a zoomorphic invite to suggest a parallel between representations in style of the Round Heads and the bovidians images (styles of Séfar - Ozan Ehéré, of Abañher, Iheren), while these groups are considered generally independent one of the other one and divided up by typological concern. A first structural approach of the rock art of the zone finally allows us to open stimulating ways, for example about the nature of beings represented on walls (who may not be human beings and ordinary animals attending to some commonplace occupation), and drives us to wonder about the function of these images. According to their possible feminine dimension, some Round Heads paintings could be taken out from the file of enigmatic representations. We could also get bovidians images out from the world of ornamental paintings, or of the chronicle - without appeal to literal readings

As parlamentares representam os interesses das mulheres? O estudo parte da hipótese, defendida por autoras da teoria política feminista, de que o aumento da representação política feminina nas instituições legislativas teria como consequência a formulação de mais e melhores políticas públicas voltadas para a promoção da igualdade de gênero. As pesquisas empíricas sobre a representação política das mulheres têm se dedicado com maior empenho à dimensão da representação descritiva, ou seja, à análise dos mecanismos de exclusão e à sugestão de alternativas para aumentar a quantidade de mulheres nos parlamentos. Um número menor de trabalhos tem se debruçado sobre a análise da representação substantiva das mulheres, cujo foco é o conteúdo da representação. Esta pesquisa possui propósito duplo: um teórico e outro empírico-descritivo. No plano da teoria política, a pesquisa se propõe a contribuir para o debate sobre a representação política feminina, com base na análise de caso do Congresso Nacional brasileiro, sob a perspectiva da representação substantiva. O segundo objetivo, de teor empírico-descritivo, é entender o papel da bancada feminina da Câmara dos Deputados na formulação e aprovação de projetos de lei relacionados à promoção da igualdade de gênero. A articulação desses dois objetivos acontecerá a partir da aferição empírica da atuação substantiva da bancada feminina e da introdução de distinções analíticas positivas que permitam problematizar e revisar os pressupostos normativos da teoria política feminista. Ao final, será apresentada uma tipologia que permitirá a classificação de proposições legislativas relacionadas à igualdade de gênero.
Do women parliamentarians represent women interests? The study is based on the hypothesis, advocated by authors of feminist political theory, that the increase in female political representation in legislative institutions would result in the formulation of more and better public policies for the promotion of gender equality. Empirical research on women\'s political representation have been dedicated to analyze the descriptive representation, i.e., the analysis of mechanisms of exclusion and alternatives to increase the number of women in parliaments. A smaller number of studies have been working on the analysis of the substantive representation of women, which focuses on the content of the representation. This research has dual purpose: one theoretical and other empirical-descriptive. In terms of political theory, the research aims to contribute to the debate on female political representation, based on case analysis of the Brazilian Congress, from the perspective of substantive representation. The second objective, empirical-descriptive, is to understand the role of the \"bancada feminina\" of the House of Representatives in the formulation and approval of bills related to the promotion of gender equality. The relationship between these two objectives will take place from the empirical assessment of the substantive work of the women\'s bench and from the introduction of positive analytical distinctions that allow discussing and revising the normative assumptions of feminist political theory. At the end, a typology for the classification of legislative proposals related to gender equality will be presented.

Resumo: A presente pesquisa discute as questões relacionadas às práticas das jovens das classes populares envolvidas nos crimes de estupro, sedução e rapto, todos delitos contra os costumes sociais, ocorridos na cidade de Assis entre os anos de 1950 e 1979, bem como as representações lançadas pelos membros do Poder Judiciário sobre tais comportamentos. A grande maioria das vítimas destes delitos estava diretamente envolvida no mercado de trabalho e possuía um menor monitoramento de suas práticas sociais. Diante disto, os membros do Poder Judiciário, os quais preservavam as representações tradicionais sobre o feminino, repreendiam estes comportamentos e os consideravam desviantes da moral e dos costumes. Sem levar em consideração a idade e as características culturais das vítimas, julgavam-nas como se fossem mulheres rebeldes e, muitas vezes, promíscuas. Pertencentes a um grupo social específico, essas jovens foram vítimas não apenas dos crimes contra os costumes, mas também da discriminação de uma sociedade machista e conservadora.
Abstract: This present research discusses questions related to practices of young women from popular classes involved in rape, seduction and kidnapping crimes, all these delicts against the social custom happened in Assis city between 1950 and the 1979, and it also discusses the representations instituted by members of the Judiciary Committee about these behaviors. Great part of the victims concerning those delicts was involved at the job market and had a low supervision of their social practices. For this reason, members of the Judiciary Committee, who preserved the traditional representations about the feminine, reprehended these behaviors and considered them diverged from the moral and custom. Without considering age and cultural features of the victims, they were judged as rebel and, most of the time, promiscuous women. Belonging to a specific social group, these young women were not only victims of crimes against the custom, but they were also victims of discrimination by a sexist and conservative society.

Resumo: Esta tese procura refletir sobre a coleção Las Mujeres Españolas, Portuguesas y Americanas, publicação composta por três volumes de textos abordando espaços territoriais na Espanha, América e Portugal e por litografias - comercializadas em separado -, produzida no decorrer da década de 1870 na Espanha, e que fez uso da simbologia feminina para representar tais espaços. Essa obra constitui-se, ao mesmo tempo, em fonte e objeto desta pesquisa. Neste estudo, parte-se da hipótese de que essa coleção possui um sentido político e configura-se em produção material que constrói uma representação simbólica das características nacionais espanholas, elaborando um discurso sobre si, perceptível no conjunto de sua concepção, produção e composição. Foi produzida na segunda metade dos oitocentos, sob a raiz do movimento romântico e moldada pela estética costumbrista - gênero que se destacou por descrever tipos sociais, hábitos, costumes e tradições. Sobre a temática feminina, partiu-se do pressuposto de que imagens idealizadas de mulheres foram utilizadas para tocar os imaginários sociais pelo que representavam - amor, submissão, honra, fecundidade, educação, abnegação - e também como símbolos dos novos tipos sociais que surgiam em cena nos espaços nacionais que se configuravam perante as transformações européias. O hispanismo, discurso ideológico pautado nas experiências comuns e espírito espanhol, permeou toda a coleção, e este trabalho sustenta a hipótese de que não só referendou, mas construiu e disseminou esse ideário. Por fim, defendeu-se que tanto a linguagem textual como a iconográfica localizaram e salientaram elementos formadores das sociedades espanholas, revelando origens, tradição, peculiaridades e singularidades desses povos - sob o signo feminino - que remetiam à problemática do caráter nacional espanhol.
Abstract: This proposition tries to disclose on the collection Las Mujeres Españolas, Portuguesas y Americanas, a publication composed by three tomes of texts which discuss the territorial spaces in Spain, America and Portugal and by lithographs - separately sold -, produced in Spain during the 1870 decade, using the feminine symbology to represent those spaces. This work consists of, at the same time, origin and object of this research. This treatise starts with the hypothesis that this collection has a political meaning and happens to have a material production which builds a symbolical representation of the Spanish national characteristics, elaborating a "self-speech" about itself, perceptible on the entirety of its conception, production and composition. It was introduced on the second half of the XVIII century, under the roots of the Romanticism and molded by the costumbrista esthetics - gender that distinguished itself by describing the social models, habits, uses and traditions. From the feminine themes, the treatise starts from the pretext that the use of idealized images of women were used to reach the social imaginary of what they represented - love, submission, honor, fecundity, education, self-denial - and also as symbols of the new social types that emerged in the national spaces that appeared in the face of the European transformations. The hispanism, ideological speech based on the common experiences and on the Spanish spirits, pierced all the collection, and this treatise supports the hypothesis that it not only countersigned, but built and spread this ideas. And, last but not least, defended that both textual language and iconography placed and emphasized the elements which built the Spanish societies, revealing origins, tradition, peculiarities and singularities of this people - under the feminine sign- that alluded to the a set of problems of the Spanish national character.

This thesis studies the construction of the feminine body in Islamic discourse through specific jurisprudential (fiqhi) books, which are the main sources of policy making in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The thesis argues that Shi’a jurisprudence tries to produce human subjects and what is considered an ideal woman in the eyes of the religious books. Shi’a jurisprudence tends to discipline subjects (in this thesis, women) in and into particular ways and exercises specific body politics, which include orders concerning the female body in sexual intercourse, marriage, as well as body coverage. Each of these orders presumes a particular view of the female body and female sexuality. The thesis investigates such body politics, using a discourse analysis of the texts inspired by a Foucauldian methodological framework. In Shi’a jurisprudential texts, the female body has been defined, disciplined, regulated, and veiled. The thesis argues that in such texts, the feminine body is covered with notions of shame, discredit, sin, evil, and weakness. These texts are inflexible, male-defined and male-dominated texts and image the female body as a "criminalized body", "reproductive body", "lusty body", and "weak body".

Females make up the minority in professional euphonium playing and teaching roles in the USA. The purpose of this research is to unveil the reasons behind this imbalance and to discover potential impacts females experience as a minority in the field. Research methods included sending a questionnaire to professional female euphonium players and teachers to document the experiences of participants. A secondary purpose of this study is to further document the existence of past and present potential female euphonium role models. Through a discussion of possible origins of and reasons behind a perceived lack of female euphonium players, I am seeking ways to achieve greater parity by garnering a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by female euphonium players.

This study is an investigation into the shifts in ways of knowing which have been subsumed under the label of postmodernism. More specifically, it is concerned to relate theories of Postmodernism to the construction of film as an object of knowledge and to feminism's place in a Modernist/postmodernist divide. Chapter One offers an examination of competing readings of the nature of aesthetic Modernism drawing primarily upon debates on Modernist epistemological legitimation advanced by Jurgen Habermas and Jean-Franicois Lyotard. Chapter Two utilizes Lyotard's notion of Modernism as knowledge legitimated by the grands recits of speculation and emancipation to propose a understanding of the conceptual parameters of avant-garde film Modernism. Chapter Three examines Lyotard's view that postmodernism is acondition of cultural 'incredulity towards metanarratives' by introducing feminist interventions into avant-garde Modernism: it is argued that feminist deconstructionist film plays a crucial role in delegitimating film practices brought under the metanarrative of speculation by challenging the non-gendered mode of spectatorial knowledge claimed for them. Chapter Four extends postmodernist critiques of 'totalizing' discourses to the grand recit of liberty, and advances the view that feminist deconstructiorism, and related psychoanalytical theories of female subjectivity/spectatorship, are in turn delegitimated for instrumentalizing and homogenizing the feminist 'social bond'. Chapter Five considers Lyotard's propositions for a fragmentation of Modernist models of the 'social bond' in relation to his proposal for a theory of resistance defined in terms of 'dissensual paralogy'. Within the context of cultural and technological shifts in contemporary image-culture, the usefulness of a theory of postmodernism which remains embedded within Modernist epistemological differentiations is questioned. A proposal for a theory of film postmodernism which dispenses with the avantgarde/mass culture binary is suggested as a prerequisite for clearing a theoretical space for a politics of resistance which is not founded on instrumentalized and homogeneous spectators. Chapter Six extends this to consider how postmodernist notions of the dissolution of the 'self' and the fragmentation of 'social bond' relate to feminist emancipatory claims. A parallel to the theoretical 'loss' of Modernist foundationalisms; is offered by drawing on black and lesbian perspectives on film spectatorship to argue for theories of film meaning which reflect a multiplicity of modes of spectatorial positioning. The study concludes with an assessment of feminism's place in critiques of totalizing discourses and argues for local contextual rather than metanarrative validations of film as critical discourse.

Nous nous interrogeons sur le processus de la feminisation et de la + defeminisation ; du corps dans ces rites. Mais entre ces trois seuils significatifs consacres et interpretes par les rites de passage, il y a toute la vie qui se deroule. Ainsi, nous analysons le murissement et l'epanouissement de l'individu a travers l'apprentissage du corps et des techniques corporelles au cours de l'enfance et de l'adolescence, l'etiquette, le quotidien et les formes de la sociabilite traditionnelles (chapitre 3). Le chapitre 5 traite la physiologie feminine et le discours sur la vocation de la femme. Dans le dernier chapitre, nous etudions la courte duree : le rythme du travail et de la fete au long de l'annee et la complementarite du masculin et du feminin dans le partage de travail. The thesis contains a discussion of surrealism and the work of Meret Oppenheim and Leonora Carrington. In the thesis I also distinguish three groups of paintings in essays and describe my work and the way in which theory and practice have recommended one another. 'Salience and Surrealism' discusses how the features of collaboration, play and partnership involve women artists within the surrealist movement, and how their ideas of the feminine principle evolve and change. I also discuss the changing attitudes to imagination, creative inspiration and activity, and the understanding brought about by the meeting between surrealism and psychology. The salience of surrealism as an introverted urge and instinct toward individuation, is suggested by Kenneth Wack 'as the source of surrealism's most abiding success.' The contemporary use of salience applies to features, characteristics, and from architecture as protrusions or fortifications. The dictionary definition begins with extroverted examples like dancig, leaping about and jetting forth. The archaic meaning is origin or first beginning, hence in old medicine salience applies to the heart when it first shows in the embryo. In salience the anagram of, a silence, gave heed to the atmosphere of silence from creativity and in paintings. A silence, also corresponds with the middle part of Meret Oppenheim's life when she experienced an artisitc crisis and depression. This essay looks back fifty years of self-expression from this artist and finds prominent features to suggest the essential dichotomies which mark the artwork. Meret Oppenheim's ouevre includes painting, sculpture, poetry, books, and theatre costume and apparal. Her multiple talents in the arts and literature are like those of Leonora Carrington who has published several books and plays, in the visual arts she sculpted and painted. The salience of their creative and intellectual endeavours found realisation in the wisdom of the feminine, of animal spirits and of natural worlds. The principles of alchemy also inspired and informed their attitudes to creativity which emerges from the unification of opposites. Both artists called for a new alliance between male and female principles, and evolve concepts of androgyny, which for them lift creation to higher levels. These women as artists found a field of the arts that furnished them with both physical life and spiritual life

Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a nuanced play that illustrates revenge, madness, and complex relationships. The paper proposes a feminist reading of Hamlet and analyses the play’s central characters, Gertrude, Ophelia, Hamlet, Claudius, Polonius, and Laertes, and their behaviour under the influence of a patriarchal society. Furthermore, the study will focus on the ways in which Shakespeare represents Ophelia and Gertrude in the play. The study does a feminist reading of the play to investigate how Ophelia’s and Gertrude’s actions and behaviour are affected by the contemporary patriarchal society, and how it affects the male characters’ choices. This research allows readers to interpret female characters in several ways, and to see how women are forced to act and make choices in a contemporary patriarchy to be able to influence societal structures.

This dissertation provides an analysis of the representation of Arab American men in post-9/11 writings by Arab American women. This thesis contributes a new inquiry regarding Arab American literature in joining the subject of literature written by women and the study of Arab American masculinities. It delves into the construction (from both outsider and insider perspectives) of Arab American masculinities, at the same time as it expounds on the history of Arab (American) feminisms, placing Arab American women writers in a privileged space of contestation and critique in their fight against both sexism and racism. This dissertation wants to visibilize the nuanced depiction of Arab and Arab American men provided by Arab American women writers after 9/11, who have been informed by feminism since the 1990s. In their attempt to fight both sexism and racism, Arab American women provide ambivalent representations of Arab men that counter stereotypical discourses historically entrenched in the American psyche and also recurrent after 9/11. Furthermore, this thesis also intends to provide an analysis of fiction as a representation of reality, while also understanding literature as a potential conductor of change in cultural discourses. To do so, the dissertation is structured in four main parts which examine the context, reasons, and potential consequences of the specific portrayals of Arab American masculinities published by Arab American women after 9/11. The first chapter covers the historical vilification and racialization of Arab men in the United States, by taking on theories on biopolitics (Foucault), necropolitics (Mbembe, Puar), and monster-terrorist (Puar and Rai) in relation to the traumatic experience of September 11. The second deals with the discourses that aid in the social construction of Arab American identities and masculinities, with a special emphasis given to the theories of neopatriarchy (Sharabi), heterotopia (Foucault) and thirdspace (Soja, Bhaba). The construction of Arab American identities is also analyzed (David), as well as Arab American masculinities (Harpel). The third chapter examines the development and characteristics of Arab American feminisms (Hatem), as well as their influence to Arab American women writers. Finally, the fourth part takes on the theories from previous chapters and provides a literary analysis of the male characters in a group of selected novels published after 9/11. Those are: Diana Abu-Jaber's Crescent (2003), Laila Halaby's West of the Jordan (2003), Alicia Erian's Towelhead (2005), Laila Halaby's Once in A Promised Land (2007), Frances Kirallah Noble's The New Belly Dancer of the Galaxy (2007), Susan Muaddi Darraj's The Inheritance of Exile: Stories from South Philly (2007), Randa Jarrar's A Map of Home (2008), and Alia Yunis's The Night Counter (2009).
Esta tesis proporciona un análisis de la representación de los hombres árabo-americanos en novelas escritas por mujeres después del 11 de septiembre. Este estudio contribuye una novedosa investigación en relación a la literatura árabo-americana al juntar el estudio de la literatura escrita por mujeres y el análisis de las masculinidades árabo-americanas. La tesis explora la construcción de las masculinidades árabo-americanas, al mismo tiempo que explica la historia de los feminismos árabo-americanos, situando a las mujeres árabo-americanas en un espacio privilegiado de contestación y crítica en su lucha contra el sexismo y contra el racismo. Esta tesis quiere visibilizar la compleja representación de los hombres árabes y árabo-americanos ofrecida por mujeres árabo-americanas después del 11 de septiembre, mujeres influenciadas por el feminismo desde los años noventa. En su lucha contra el sexismo y el racismo, estas mujeres proporcionan representaciones ambivalentes de hombres árabes que contrarrestan los discursos estereotípicos recurrentes después del 11 de septiembre y arraigados en la psique norteamericana. Además, proporciona un análisis de la ficción como representación de la realidad, entendiendo la literatura como conductor potencial de cambio en los discursos culturales. Nous nous concentrons sur la reproduction visuelle de la « femme » dans le quadrinhos en tant que référence de la période créatif et innovante de la littérature visuelle au Brésil au travers du manga. Cette thèse étudie le fait que la « femme » en tant que personnage principal peut être vu comme un simple critère esthétique pour un regard masculin érotique. Cependant, nous trouvons également dans ces caractéristiques un contrepoids, puisque dans ce référentiel érotique, ces personnages féminins sont devenus un exemple de liberté personnelle d´indépendance et d´autonomie au Brésil. The visual reproduction of the "woman" in quadrinhos marks a creative and innovative period of the visual literature in Brazil concerning its hybridization with manga. This thesis concerns the fact that this "woman" can be seen as a simple aesthetic criterion for an erotic male gaze. However, we argue that this characteristic becomes a counterweight for women´s personal freedom, independence and autonomy in Brazil. We analyse it through a carnivalization which mark the immigration of Japanese to Brazil and of Brazilian Japanese to Japan with the female visual representation in quadrinhos, manga and manga-inspired quadrinhos, the fandom and feminine contradictions

EntreGêneros: Representações do Feminino na Teledramaturgia Brasileira é tese de doutorado, que busca pesquisar como são construídas as representações do feminino nos produtos teledramatúrgicos nacionais, especificamente em séries - e suas derivações - seriados/sitcoms e unitários. Neste estudo, damos continuidade à pesquisa anterior, em que investigamos a importância que a presença midiática tem na contraestigmatização de grupos socialmente minoritários. Consideramos que as representações que nossa teledramaturgia constrói sobre determinados grupos também são importantes para compreender os valores de nossa sociedade, bem como as reafirmações ou deslocamentos dados nas enunciações desses programas, tão presentes em nosso dia a dia. Para a realização desta pesquisa, foram construídos dois bancos de dados: o primeiro, a partir dos dados dos sete Censos realizados pelo IBGE, entre os anos 1950 e 2010, e também dos PNADs desse intervalo; o segundo abrangeu temas, diretores, roteiristas, atrizes que interpretaram as protagonistas e as respectivas profissões, entre outros dados, ao longo dos 15 programas aqui pesquisados. Durante o mapeamento também foi feita uma seleção de cenas, que posteriormente serviram para a montagem de um filme-compilação, em formato de curta-metragem. Essa pesquisa abarcou seis eixos temáticos: Relações Amorosas e Familiares, Corpo e Comportamento, Sexo e Sexualidade, Violências Contra a Mulher, Cidadania, Políticas Públicas e Problemas Sociais e Trabalho, Carreira e Sustento, que também serviram de subdivisão cênica para o filme. Além dos mapeamentos realizados, a pesquisa também engloba uma análise discursiva, partindo dos estudos da AD Francesa, a ser demonstrada na parte final desta tese, que também acompanha um quadro contrastivo entre os eixos temáticos ao longo do tempo, bem como uma linha do tempo, que mensura a intensidade dos eixos. Assim, um dos principais objetivos desta tese é debater e problematizar o quanto um produto de entretenimento pode complexificar a vida e o ser humano, servindo de base não apenas para diversão, mas também para reflexão, educação, transformação
EntreGêneros: Female Representations in Brazilian soap operas are doctoral thesis, which seeks to investigate how are built the feminine representations in national teledramatúrgicos products, specifically in series - and its derivations - series / sitcoms and unit. In this study, we continue the previous research, we investigated the importance that the media presence has in contraestigmatização socially minority groups. We believe that the representations that our television drama builds on certain groups are also important to understand the values of our society, as well as restatements or displacement data in the enunciations of these programs, so present in our daily lives. For this research, it was built two databases: the first, from the data of the seven census conducted by the IBGE, between 1950 and 2010, and also of PNADs that range; the second covered topics, directors, writers, actresses who played the main characters and their professions, and other data over the 15 programs surveyed here. During mapping was also made a selection of scenes, which later served for mounting a film build-in short film format. This research encompassed six thematic areas: Loving and Family Relations, Body and Behaviour, Gender and Sexuality, Violence Against Women, Rights, Public Policy and Social Problems and Work, Career and Livelihood, which also served as the scenic subdivision for the film. In addition to the conducted mapping, the survey also includes a discursive analysis, starting with the French AD studies, to be demonstrated at the end of this thesis, which also comes with a contrastive table between the themes over time, as well as a timeline , which measures the intensity of the axes. Thus one of the main objectives of this thesis is to debate and discuss how an entertainment product can complexifying life and the human being, providing the basis not only for fun but also for reflection, education, transformation.

This study argues that novels by contemporary women writers, such as Doris Lessing, May Sarton, Barbara Pym and Jenny Diski, through their representation of older female protagonists, create alternative discourses of ageing to those that dominate Western society. By placing these figures at the centre of their narratives, the texts counteract the silence and pejorative stereotyping that routinely surrounds the lives of the aged. The technique of studying literary representations of women is not new; in fact, it is a trusted part of feminist methodology. However, one of the assertions of this dissertation is that it is rarely used to investigate texts about the senescent, reflecting feminism's failure to include the older women in their theories. Part one of the dissertation examines such issues in depth, setting out the theoretical orientation of the study. It considers popular representations and paradigms of ageing, as well as considering the power of normalising discourse and dynamics of representation. Part two uses this material to analyse the strategies that British and North American authors have employed, since the 1960's, to challenge common stereotypes of older women. The first three chapters focus on novels that portray protagonists who display emotions, not usually associated with the old, which are revealed in relation to different aspects of ageing: anger and frustration (dependency); passion and desire (sexuality); and contentment (daily life). Chapter 7, 'The Wise and Archetypal Older Woman', shifts its attention away from more realist texts to study characters who emerge from the covers of ratiocinative fiction. It argues that conventional critiques of the genre often negate its more polemical elements, which is a result of their failure to use an age- and gender-aware approach and a problem that generally greets intelligent novels about female senescence. This thesis sees itself as part of a movement that aims to create a space in which older female characters' voices can be heard and recognised. It contends that the authors treated here produce visions of ageing that are not solely concerned with stagnation and decline. They represent a varied and compelling group of protagonists and, in doing so, illustrate that older women are worthy of literary, social and feminist interest.

Educational access, achievement and opportunity for students and educators in U.S. educational institutions is influenced and often limited by gender. Although the U.S. Glass Ceiling Commission reports that the gender equity values, beliefs and commitments of institutional leaders are a key factor in reducing institutional gender inequities (U.S. Dept of Labor, 1995), very little is known about the current preparation or evaluation of educational leadership values, especially at the doctoral level (Hess & Kelly, 2007, Grogan & Andrews, 2002; Levine, 2005; Murphy & Vriesenga, 2004). This study utilized feminist content analysis as a conceptual framework and research methodology to examine the collective gender equity values, beliefs and commitments of educational leaders represented in a key textual artifact of doctoral study, the Educational Doctorate (Ed.D.) dissertation. This sequential mixed method content analysis examines 15,014 dissertation titles of Ed.D dissertations completed from 112 U.S. public doctoral granting institutions between 1998-2007 to identify 1185 dissertations indicating gender in their title. A purposeful sample of 177 abstracts was selected from emergent themes for further analysis. The final research phase examined a purposeful sample of 9 complete dissertation texts selected from the analysis of the abstracts. The research focused on two questions, 1.) How prevalent is gender focused inquiry in recent Ed.D. dissertation scholarship, from 1998-2007? 2.) What are the cultural gender beliefs and gender conceptualizations represented in Ed.D. dissertation scholarship from 1998-2007? The findings indicate gender focused inquiry is not prevalent in Ed.D. dissertation titles, in public doctoral granting institutions from 1998-2007; only 7.4 % indicated any mention of gender. The findings also revealed great institutional variation in the prevalence of gender focused dissertations in the 112 institutions examined. Three themes also emerged from patterns of representations illuminating problematic gender cultural beliefs, 1,) male leadership and intellectual authority is privileged, 2.) Black males are "othered", 3.) Latinas are silenced. Three additional problematic themes of gender bias are revealed because of scanty representation in the sample, 1.) LGTBIQ issues silenced, 2.) Title IX trivialized and 3.) Feminism marginalized. Each of these three gender focused categories represented less than 1% of the Ed.D. dissertations completed in U.S. public doctoral granting universities between 1998-2007. The findings have implications for program planning of doctoral Ed. D. programs for the development of gender equity dispositions. The findings also contribute to the discipline by adding to the knowledge of Ed. D. dissertation content. This report includes recommendation for future research and practice.

Essa dissertação tem como proposta identificar as representações da sexualidade feminina em revistas brasileiras contemporâneas dirigidas à mulher. O objetivo é verificar o quanto essas representações distam, ou se aproximam, dos estereótipos femininos construídos ao longo da civilização ocidental. O corpus da pesquisa é formado por três publicações de editoras consolidadas no mercado brasileiro: Nova e Lola (já extinta), da Editora Abril, e Marie Claire, da Editora Globo, colecionadas por seis meses – de janeiro a junho de 2013. A fundamentação teórica inclui trabalhos de estudiosos do feminismo, da história das mulheres no mundo ocidental, da identidade como construção narrativa, das interações sociais e da comunicação. A Análise de Conteúdo categorial, como proposta por Laurence Bardin, foi a metodologia usada para analisar o material selecionado. Procedeu-se ainda a uma pesquisa de recepção com leitoras das respectivas revistas, cujo objetivo é averiguar a sua percepção relativa a esse produto. A pesquisa aponta para a ideia de “modernizar para não transformar” - característica encontrada nas revistas e acentuada nas últimas décadas.
The purpose of this dissertation is to identify different forms of female sexuality representation in contemporary Brazilian magazines aimed at female audiences. The specific aim is to verify how much these representations get close or far from long-standing feminine stereotypes built in Western civilization. The research corpus is composed of three publications by some traditional Brazilian printing houses: the Nova and Lola magazines (the last one already extinct) by Editora Abril and Marie Claire by Editora Globo, collected along six months – from January through June 2013. Theoretical fundamentals used in this work include results of research about feminism, the history of women in the Western world, identity as a narrative construction, social interactions and communication. Categorical content analysis, as a proposal by Laurence Bardin was the methodology used to analyze the selected material. A research work about the reception of this product has also been conducted. The overall conclusion suggests the existence of an idea of “modernizing in order not to transform” a characteristic that has been found in magazines and seems to have been highlighted in the last decades.

Communication between politicians and the public is rarely direct and first-hand, but almost always mediated by journalist opinions and values. Consequently, the way in which the media reports on State matters has a profound impact on people’s understanding of political processes and their attitudes towards the governing figures. The aim of this research project is to investigate the role that the Polish Press assumes in mediating women’s involvement in contemporary politics. Stemming from the perspective of feminist critical linguistics, the thesis empirically examines a wide array of media publications derived from leading Polish socio-political magazines (‘Polityka’, ‘Wprost’, ‘Newsweek Polska’) and electronic press. By engaging with the journalist discourse, it focuses on the importance of language in generating epistemological claims about women and femininity. It demonstrates not only how female subjectivities are produced in the Polish public domain, but also how history and culture impinge on these constructions in a dialectical-relational manner. The intention is to draw up an ‘inventory’ of signifying practices through which female MPs emerge as gendered subjects in the hope that this will inspire closer scrutiny of media content, leading to its informed critique and transformation.
