Resumen
Interest in laser crystallization (LC) of silicon (Si) thin films has been on the rise in fabrication of polycrystalline silicon (pc-Si) based thin/ultrathin photovoltaic solar cells and Si based thin film transistors (TFT). Laser based fabrication of device quality pc-Si thin films at room temperature is expected to be a key enabling technology because of its low energy, material and process time budget. Fabrication of high-quality pc-Si thin films without pre-/post-treatment at large is a disruptive technology which has the potential to revolutionize the Si thin film industry. We hereby describe in detail a multi-wavelength laser processing platform specially developed for crystallization of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin films into pc-Si thin films. The platform has three main stages. The first stage consists of a nanosecond pulsed ytterbium (Yt3+) doped fibre-laser with a master oscillator power amplifier architecture, operating at a wavelength of 1064 nm with an adjustable repetition rate between 80 kHz–300 kHz. The output beam has a maximum power of 18 W with a pulse energy of 90 µJ. The pulse durations can be set to values between 15 ns–40 ns. The second stage has free-space optical elements for second harmonic generation (SHG) which produces an emission at a wavelength of 532 nm. Conversion efficiency of the SHG is 25% with an output pulse energy of 20 µJ. The platform provides two wavelengths at either 1064 nm or 532 nm in crystallization of a-Si films for different crystallization regimes. The last stage of the platform has a sample processing assembly with a line-focus, which has an x-y motorized stage on a vibration isolated table. Speed of the motorized stage can be set between 1 mm/s–100 mm/s. Stage speed and repetition rate adjustments help to adjust overlap of successive pulses between 97.22–99.99%. Our platform has variety of tune parameters that make it a uniquely flexible system for delicate Si thin film crystallization. A large selection of operational parameter combinations, the wavelength selection and simultaneous x-y scanning capability allow users to crystallize Si films on various substrates optimally. The operation wavelength choice can be done by considering optical absorption and thickness of a-Si films on different types of substrates. Hence, delivering precise amount of absorbed energy in the line-focus irradiation is useful in increasing the average size of crystalline domains; moreover, nucleation of crystallites can be initiated either from the top or bottom interface of the film. Continuous and simultaneous motion of the stage in two dimensions allows to process arbitrary continuous pc-Si geometries in a-Si film. In summary, our multi-wavelength laser processing platform offers all-in-one LC utility for intricate LC-Si processing.

Resumen
A laser modulation and amplification system is designed to meet the demand of long-range space optical communication, which uses the high-speed semiconductor laser to integrate electro-absorption (EA) modulator as a seed source. Two optical fiber amplifier technologies are used. The erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and single-mode semiconductor laser pumping are used in the first-level; erbium ytterbium co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) and 2-4 multimode fiber laser pumping with good temperature characteristics are used in the second level, and the control method is automatic gain control. The experimental result shows that the modulation rate achieves to 10Gbps, and the output optical power achieves to 5W.

Resumen
Abstract In this work, we have developed an analytical model of an actively Q-switched Ytterbium-doped fiber laser by using two coupled cavities with amplifying fibers in Mach–Zehnder interferometer configuration. This oscillator system provides high peak power and high energy nanosecond pulse. The pulse energy is almost twice the energy of an individual fiber laser with a combining efficiency goes up 99%. This concept brings some novel perspectives for scaling the high energy and high peak power of nanosecond pulse fiber laser.

Resumen
In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a stable passive Q-switched fiber laser operating at 1543.5 nm using a double clad Erbium-Ytterbium co-doped fiber (EYDF) as the gain medium in conjunction with nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. An isolator is used in conjunction with a highly nonlinear EYDF to induce intensity dependent loss in a sufficiently-high loss ring cavity to achieve Q-switched operation with a low pump threshold of 300 mW. At 980 nm multimode pump power of 500 mW, the EYDF laser generates an optical pulse train with a repetition rate of 46.95 kHz, pulse width of 5.3 μs and pulse energy of 75.6 nJ. The simple and inexpensive Q-switched NPR-based laser has a big potential for applications in metrology, environmental sensing and biomedical diagnostics.

Resumen
In this work, a compact, stable dual-wavelength Q-switched laser with a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) slurry as saturable absorber (SA) which is independent of any host polymer has been demonstrated. The MWCNTs slurry is fabricated and the peak shift is investigated using Raman spectroscopy. The passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) oscillated simultaneously at 1532.32 nm and 1556.97 nm with 24.67 nm peak separation, at threshold and maximum input power of 26mW and 74mW respectively.By increasing the input pump power from 36 mW to 74 mW, the pulse train repetition rate increases from 25 kHz to 78 kHz, while the pulse width is reduced from 17.84 us to 5.24 ?s. The generated pulse produced maximum pulse energy and maximum peak power of 11.97 nJ and 2.05 mW, respectively at maximum input pump power. The recorded signal to noise ratio is about 62 dB and shows that the proposed MWCNTs slurry based SAis able to generate dual wavelength Q-switched pulse laser with high stability pulse. Resumen
Solid-state lasers emitting in the 1.5–1.6 μm spectral range are very promising for eye-safe laser range finding, ophthalmology, fiber-optic communication systems, and optical location. The aim of this work is the investigation of spectrosposcopic and laser properties of gain medium based on borate crystal for abovementioned lasers.Spectroscopic and laser properties of Er,Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 crystals with different concentrations of dopants were investigated. Polarized absorption and emission cross-section spectra were determined. The ytterbium- erbium energy transfer efficiency was estimated. The maximal energy transfer efficiency up to 97 % was obtained for Er(4 at.%),Yb(11 at.%):YAl3(BO3)4 crystal. The laser operation of heavily doped crystals with erbium concentration up to 4 аt.% (2.2^1020 cm^3) was realized. By using of Er(2 at.%),Yb(11 at.%):YAl3(BO3)4 crystal a maximal continuous- wave (CW) output power of 1.6 W was obtained at 1522 nm with slope efficiency of 32 %. By using of Er(4 at.%),Yb(11 at.%):YAl3(BO3)4 crystal a maximal peak output power up to 2.2 W with slope efficiency of 40 % was realized in quasi-continuous-wave regime of operation. The spatial profile of the output beam was close to TEM00 mode with M2 < 1.2 during all laser experiments.Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that Er,Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 crystals are promising active media for lasers emitting in the spectral range of 1.5-1.6 pm for the usage in laser rangefinder and laser- induced breakdown spectroscopy systems, and LIDARs.

Resumen
An all-fiber three-stage master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA), based on Erbium and Erbium-Ytterbium co-doped fibers, has been designed and developed. The performance of such a laser is primarily limited by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), Yb bottlenecking, and non-linear effects. Other important factors, that need to be considered towards performance improvement, are fiber bend diameter and heat generated in the fiber. This paper describes the methodology for the estimation and management of these limiting factors for each amplifier stage. The work presented here is limited to the fibers which are commercially easily available, unlike customised Yb- free large mode area (LMA) Erbium-doped fibers, where very high peak and average powers are being reported due to the absence of Yb ASE. Presented experimental results and discussion shall be beneficial for the fiber laser amplifier designers. With suitable management, 1 kW peak power pulses of 30 ns duration at 200 kHz repetition rate have been achieved with 30 % optical efficiency. The collimated output of 6 W average power (limited by Yb ASE) with high beam quality (M2 ≈ 1.6) at 1550 nm can be employed for a variety of applications. By adding additional amplifier stages, power can be scaled further.

Resumen
We experimentally demonstrate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) operation by using a saturable absorber (SA) based on tungsten disulfide (WS2). By depositing WS2 thin film layer at the end of optical fiber ferrule, we fabricated a SA device. The SA is incorporated into an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity to generate a Q-switching pulses train operating at 1559.8 nm. As a result, stable passively Q-switched EDFL pulses with maximum output pulse energy of 123.2 nJ, repetition rate of 104.1 kHz, and pulse width of 9.61 us are achieved when the input pump power is 142.1 mW at the wavelength of 980 nm. Resumen
We report on thermal analysis and a continuous wave (CW) laser operation at (1.998µm) of end pumped Tm: YAP cylindrical laser rod. The Tm: YAP laser rod is pumped at a wavelength of 1.064 µm emitting from Nd: YAG laser source. A 3W incident pump power is used to generate a maximum laser output of 700 mW, representing 18% slope efficiency. The power of thermally induced lens in Tm:YAP laser rod is numerically analyzed and validated experimentally. The focal lengths of the thermally induced lens are directly measured using Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. We have detected blue up-conversion fluorescence emission before laser operation at 1.998 µm. The obtained experimental results were in good agreement with the numerical calculations. Resumen
Abstract Power scaling based on traditional ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs) is limited by optical nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability (TMI) in high-power fiber lasers. Here, we propose a novel long tapered fiber with a constant cladding and tapered core (CCTC) along its axis direction. The tapered-core region of the fiber is designed to enhance the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) threshold and suppress higher-order mode resonance in the laser cavity. The CCTC YDF was fabricated successfully with a modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) method combined with solution doping technology, which has a cladding diameter of 400 μm and a varying core with a diameter of ~24 μm at both ends and ~31 μm in the middle. To test the performance of the CCTC fiber during high-power operation, an all-fiber laser oscillator based on a CCTC YDF was investigated experimentally. As a result, a maximum output power of 3.42 kW was achieved with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 55.2%, although the TMI effect was observed at an output power of ~3.12 kW. The measured beam quality (M2 factor) was ~1.7, and no sign of the Raman component was observed in the spectrum. We believe that CCTC YDF has great potential to simultaneously mitigate the SRS and TMI effects, and further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the YDF.

Resumen
Compared with traditional uniform fibers, tapered fiber has numerous unique advantages, such as larger mode area, higher pump absorption, suppression to nonlinear effects, and maintaining good beam quality. In this manuscript, we have constructed an all-fiberized fiber amplifier which is based on a piece of ytterbium-doped tapered double-clad fiber (T-DCF). The fiber amplifier is operated under continuous wave (CW) regime at 1080 nm wavelength. The $M^{2}$ factor of the amplifier at 1.39 kW output power is ${\sim}1.8$. The maximum output power of the system reached 1.47 kW, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest output power of long tapered fiber based fiber laser system. Our result successfully verifies the potential of power scalability and all-fiberized capability of long tapered fiber, and the performance of our system can be further enhanced by fiber design optimization.

Resumen
AbstractA pulsed master oscillator fiber power amplifier working in nanosecond range has been developed. An ytterbium-doped double-clad (large mode area) optical fiber was used as an amplifying medium. Actively Q-switched Nd:YVO laser was used as a seed of light pulses. The system worked at the repetition rate from 10 kHz to 40 kHz. At the amplifier output, pulses of 10.9 kW peak-power were achieved. The laser system worked at the slope efficiency of 30%.

Resumen
Ytterbium-doped fibers have become the optimum gain media of high-power fiber lasers thanks to a simple energy structure, which strongly reduces the excited state absorption, and a low quantum defect and a high optic–optic conversion efficiency, which means the low thermal load. In this paper, we take a review of the current state of the art in terms of $\text{Yb}^{3+}$ doped fibers for high-power fiber lasers, including the development of the fabrication techniques. The research work to overcome the challenges for $\text{Yb}^{3+}$ doped fibers, which affect the stability of output power and beam quality, will be demonstrated. Direction of further research is presented and the goal is to look for a fiber design, to boost single fiber output power, stabilize the laser power and support robust single-mode operation.

Resumen
ABSTRACTIn experiments with rare-earth-doped fibers impressively results have been demonstrated and shown that fiber lasers and amplifiers are an attractive and power scalable solid-state laser concept. With ytterbium-doped large-mode-area double-clad fibers, output powers approaching the kW-range with diffraction limited beam quality have been realized in the continuous regime. Also in the pulsed regime, even for femtosecond pulse duration average output powers in the range of 100 W have been demonstrated. Further power scaling is limited by the end facets damage, thermo-optical problems or nonlinear effects. To overcome these restrictions microstructured fibers can be used. This type of fibers has several new preferable features. In our contribution we will discuss the advantages of microstructured fibers to reduce nonlinear effects inside the fiber and the possibility to scale the output power of fiber lasers and amplifiers with excellent beam quality. We also show fiber based chirped pulse amplification system (CPA-System) with ultra short pulses, pulse energies of up to 100 μJ and high repetition rates.

Resumen
High coherence of the laser is indispensable light sources in modern long or short-distance imaging systems, because the high coherence leads to coherent artifacts such as speckle that corrupt image formation. To deliver low coherence pulses in fiber amplifiers, we utilize the superluminescent pulsed light with broad bandwidth, nonlongitudinal mode structure and chaotic mode phase as the seed source of the cascaded fiber amplifiers. The influence of fiber superluminescent pulse amplification (SPA) on the limitations of the performance is analyzed. A review of our research results for SPA in the fibers are present, including the nonlinear theories of this low coherent light sources, i.e., self-focusing (SF), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and self-phase modulation (SPM) effects, and the experiment results of the nanosecond pulses with peak power as high as 4.8 MW and pulse energy as much as 55 mJ. To improve the brightness of SPA light in the future work, we introduce our novel evaluation term and a more reasonable criterion, which is denoted by a new parameter of brightness factor for active large mode area fiber designs. A core-doped active large pitch fiber with a core diameter of $190~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ and a mode-field diameter of $180~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ is designed by this method. The designed fiber allows near diffracted limited beam quality operation, and it can achieve 100 mJ pulse energy and 540 W average power by analyzing the mode coupling effects induced by heat.

Resumen
A simple optical pulse generation scheme for pulsed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and free-space communications is proposed and experimentally and numerically demonstrated, in which continuous-wave light emitted by a distributed feedback-laser diode (DFB-LD) is modulated by a lithium-niobate Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator to generate optical short pulses, and an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used to boost transmitting light power. Possibilities of intensity modulators for high speed communications being used to generate optical short pulses for low speed pulsed LiDAR are investigated. The influences of bias voltage of intensity modulator and bit rate of modulation signal on the generated optical pulses are discussed. The pulse width obtained by using the return to zero signal with 33% duty cycle on bit rate of 2.5 and 5 Gbit/s is respectively 128.0 and 63.2 ps, and the corresponding nominal accuracy of pulsed LiDAR is respectively 19.2 and 9.5 mm, and low repetition frequency required by pulsed LiDAR is achieved by coding to high-speed modulation signal. The system performance for free-space communications and pulsed LiDAR is evaluated, respectively. We believe that the proposed scheme is suitable for the integrated system of pulsed LiDAR and free-space communications.
