Spectroscopic properties of high concentration Er³⁺-doped phosphate glasses and performance of short Er³⁺-doped phosphate fiber amplifiers were studied and characterized. Systematic studies of cooperative upconversion of Er³⁺ ions in ⁴I₁₃/₂ level and energy transfer from Yb³⁺ to Er³⁺ in phosphate glasses were performed by a rate equation formalism. The cooperative upconversion coefficient for an Er³⁺ concentration of 4 x 10²⁰ ions/cm³ was found to be 1.1 x 10⁻¹⁸ cm³/s. An energy transfer coefficient of 1.1 x 10⁻¹⁶ cm³/s was found for an Yb³⁺ concentration of 6 x 10²⁰ ions/cm3 and an Er³⁺ conc

The use of a doped fiber amplifier to amplify the return signal from a 1.06 μm solid-state lidar is examined. Two schemes are considered: heterodyne and direct detection. For the heterodyne scheme the signal will be amplified with the fiber amplifier and mixed with the local oscillator in a fiber optic evanescent wave coupler. Resumen
We demonstrate experimentally and by computer simulation that the semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are capable of performing a variety of optoelectronic (OE) functions useful in fiber-optic networks and optical signal processors at multi-Gb/s rates[1,2]. An example of OE functions obtained is a complete optical regeneration of data pulses which are amplified, retimed, and reshaped in optical domain. Resumen
We demonstrate a TMI-free 5.2 kW single-mode output from a fiber amplifier using Yb 20/400 fibers with reduced core thermo-optic coefficient. The TMI threshold is increased by 50% compared to that of commercial Yb-doped fibers.
