The article highlights the relation of socio-culture with language, speech and fiction, being considered as semiotic systems, which allows establishing relationships between their components. The multi-faceted subordination of these systems, investigated from the mental level to linguistic implementation, has been studied. It has been shown how socio-culture is expressed in cultural codes, and they, in turn, are represented on the mental level in the concepts of statements and texts. Six main codes of culture has been characterized: somatic, spatial, temporal, object, biomorphic and spiritual.

Although the First World War has become history by now, the memory of the war continues to be repeatedly fictionalised: retrospectively inspired narratives are often regarded as more genuine and far-reaching than historical or documentary accounts in their rendition of the past. Yet, memory is creatively selective, reflecting a highly-conflicted process of sifting and discerning what should be remembered, neglected or amplified from the stream of war experience. In his book about Pat Barker, Mark Rawlinson argues that “historical fiction has been transformed in the post-war period by the way w

What people said on their deathbeds preoccupied 19th-century Protestants. Fear of the void after death or of punishment in the afterlife made death terrifying. The process of dying, however, was ritualized to negate these terrors. Having a “good death” constituted reassurance for the dying, comfort for the family, and a lesson for the community. Such comfort was available even from fictional deathbed scenes, where sentiment and imagery softened the harsh reality. This interdisciplinary study explores the similarities between real and fictional deathbed narratives, using a sample of 19th-centur

Its main aim is to identify the most relevant female offenders from each historical era and analyze how authors portray their characters in each literary work. Furthermore, it offers different insights into the social, cultural, political, and jurisprudential contexts of the murder cases of each female perpetrator under discussion. The lighthouse has long been a familiar setting for stories of love, conflict, and epiphany. That isolated tower on the clifftop brims with symbolic possibility and sometimes cliché, positioning it as a site of gendered love, with popular fiction titles embedding the trope of the contained world revolving, like the lit lamp, around the male authority. But the lighthouse also has an explicit historical situatedness. The nineteenth century British lighthouses, in particular, were seen as outposts of empire. They are immovable inscriptions of the outlines of islands, the edges of continents – the

Serpell’s narrative challenges dominant, Eurocentric historical perspectives and reclaims Zambia’s agency through the themes of decoloniality, ecological resilience, and technological entanglements. By juxtaposing colonial infrastructure projects like the Kariba Dam with speculative innovations such as microdrones and bioengineering, Serpell critiques the exploitation of Afric

This study investigates a female protagonist’s suicide attempts in Ogwonjaehapgiyeon, a work of fiction written in the late Joseon Dynasty. So far, one of the most interesting points in the work involves a female protagonist who tried to kill herself six times but survived. Nevertheless, her suicide attempts in fiction have not been structurally analyzed.
I examined scenes and the corresponding meanings of the protagonist’s suicide attempts in Ogwonjaehapgiyeon. Hyeonyeong, the character who attempted suicide six times, was saved by other people such as a nanny, a character from Tang chu

Until the present millennium, very little creative literary writing in either English or Spanish had been published in the British colonial enclave of Gibraltar. Given the small population size of the autonomous community of some 30,000 people, it was considered unlikely that a “national” literary culture could form. In the course of the past decade, a handful of dedicated writers have published a noticeable amount of fiction, all of which is concerned with establishing a recognized Gibraltarian literary identity. ABSTRACT This article revisits the utopian fiction of German science-fiction writer and poet Paul Scheerbart, considering the place of race and gender in his fantastical glass architectural spaces. This is primarily done through a reading of clothing and decoration in these texts, elements that are often explicitly mentioned in relation to women and people of color. Historical context concerning modernist paradigms, metaphorical interpretations of architectural glass, the connection between clothing and architecture, and the place of women in the Werkbund provides a framework that serves to ex

Fiction as a form of art is a special area of the aesthetic. In a truly fictional work, all its elements are subordinate to the expression of a certain content, expressive, figurative, therefore, the reader’s understanding of a literary work is not only aesthet
