A new two-dimensional transform is derived and implemented that is able to discriminate with respect to angular and radial frequency. This octave-band directional filter bank (OBDFB) is maximally decimated, has a separable polyphase implmentation, provides perfect reconstruction, and can be implemented in a tree structure allowing for a somewhat arbitrary number of angular and radial divisions. The use of a noise-shaping system in oversampled filter banks has been shown to improve the effective resolution of subband coders. Although the filter banks directly determine the noise-shaping coefficients, a comparison between theoretical and simulated results has not been done, while the effect of the selection of the filter banks on the performance of the noise-shaping system has not yet been evaluated. <p>In this dissertation, two filter banks optimization problems are studied. The first problem is the optimization of filter banks used in a subband coder under a bit constraint. In the second problem, a multiple input multiple output communication system is optimized under a power constraint.
