The article introduces Alexander Kuchin and his “Small Russian-Norwegian dictionary”, which was published in 1907 by the publishing house “Pomor” (Finnmarken) in Vardø (Norway) and was very popular at that time. Its author, Alexander Stepanovich Kuchin, a man with a unique destiny, is known to compatriots as the only Russian who participated in the discovery of the South Pole in the Roald Amundsen’s expedition, and also as the first of our countrymen who, after the discovery of Antarctica in 1820 by the expedition of Faddey F. Some impacts of reindeer grazing on Finnmark's landscape are briefly described. Information on the impacts was gathered mostly by surveying 17 sample transects in the field, often 90 m in length; as well as by examining other localities in Finnmark, particularly the area around Ifjordfjellet. The results of the surveys along fences as well as in the open countryside are given. These show that much degradation has taken place along fences and that adjacent to the fence more than half the soil can be exposed to trampling and the weather. Resumen
Spiders have been collected by pitfall traps from two palsa bogs in the vicinity of Vardø in Finnmark, northern Norway. A total of 449 specimens belonging to 27 species from 4 families were caught. Two major ecological guilds were present, active vagrant forms, mainly consisting of lycosids, and the smaller net-building species represented by Linyphiidae and Hahniidae. Linyphiids made up 70% of the species but only 38% of the individuals, the lycosids being most abundant. Faunal differences between sites is probably caused by placement of the traps in different parts of the bogs. Seven species

Resumen
Results from surveys, designed to assess the numbers of harbour seals Phoca vitulina at their breeding and moulting sites in Finnmark county, North Norway, in 1989 - 91, are presented. The maximum total number of moulting harbour seals counted in the county (in 1991) was 332, distributed at eight localities. Breeding was observed at seven sites that mainly coincided with the moulting sites. Maximum total counts of 221 (including 47 pups) and 232 (including 33 pups) seals were made during breeding in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Two of the surveyed haul-out sites were estuarine sandbanks. The o
