n this study, we investigated the problem of overfishing along the African coastlines, using two entities of South Africa and Central Africa Republic for data analysis, concentrating on the causes of overfishing and potential preventative measures. In order to understand the current overfishing problem in Africa, we first looked at the high local and global demand for seafood, the financial incentives for overfishing, and the ineffective government regulations and enforcement of sustainable fishing techniques. The impact of fisheries on elasmobranchs in Africa is not well documented. Available data suggest that there are no large shark fishing nations (> 10000 t year-1), reported landings for 1994 being around 39 000 t. This value is believed to be a underestimate, because of a lack of data on catches and landings from the various different fishing methods and the large number of nations fishing in African waters. Existing data are mostly linked to industrial fisheries, although the artisanal sector could be responsible for substantial catches. Landed by-catch and discard rates of elasmobranchs a

<strong><em>Fisheries management involves, among other things, knowledge of the actors and the catching gear used. These data are generally absent in the fisheries of C&ocirc;te d&#39;Ivoire. However, there is a strong fishing activity. To lead this study, surveys were conducted among fishermen and fishery administrators. The study of fishing activity in the area of Dioulabougou (C&ocirc;te d&rsquo;Ivoire, West Africa) in the district of Bouafl&eacute; done from November 2013 to February 2014 identified 88 fishermen. This population is composed of ivorians (39.77%) and foreigners (60.23%). The

Literature on special interest tourism has been expanding over the past 25 years. Although the growth of research interest and scholarship is relatively recent, the phenomenon of special interest tourism is not new and many of its forms enjoy a long history. Nevertheless, most existing international scholarship concentrates on contemporary issues. Against this background the aim is provide an alternative historical perspective on special interest tourism. Archival sources are used to analyse the evolution of sea angling as a recreational sport and incipient form of special interest tourism in

Abstract Changes in the size spectra of demersal fish communities off Cape Verde (1988, 1994), Guinea (1985–1995), and Mauritania (1987–2001) were studied. Intercepts and slopes showed opposite trends for Guinea and Mauritania, but were relatively stable in spite of a strong increase in landings per unit area. For Cape Verde, there were marked changes in size structure, seemingly inconsistent with the more moderate fishing pressure there. Changes in size structure do not seem to be suitable indicators of the effects of fishing in areas characterized by faster growth rates, small sizes, high sp

This study aimed at assessing the growth and mortality parameters of the Prionace gluaca and Sphyrna lewini shark species from the coast of Ghana. Data was taken for nine (9) months from April 2021 to December 2021. The length data taken from the shark species was analyzed for the estimation of population parameters using the FiSAT II tool. From the results, the estimated asymptotic length (L∞) and the growth rate (K) of P. glauca and S. lewini were 396.4 cm and 0.27 yr–1 and 349.1 cm and 0.24 yr–1 respectively, indicating that these species exhibited slow growing characteristics, evinced by a

Abstract Malaria is a serious global health issue, with around 200 million cases per year. As such, great effort has been put into the mass distribution of bed nets as a means of prophylaxis within Africa. Distributed mosquito nets are intended to be used for malaria protection, yet increasing evidence suggests that fishing is a primary use for these nets, providing fresh concerns for already stressed coastal ecosystems. While research documents the scale of mosquito net fisheries globally, no quantitative analysis of their landings exists. The effects of these fisheries on the wider ecosystem

The increasing intensification of the exploitation of fishery resources in Africa in general and in Côte d'Ivoire in particular, associated with the processes of degradation of the natural environment, pose real risks of regression, disappearance of species and reduction of fish production. So, knowledge of fishing parameters is very important in the strategy implemented by managers of this sector on Ivorian rivers and bodies of water. Thus, the composition of catches, fishing effort and fishing gear production were studied in the Bandama River from July 2023 to June 2024. The data was collect

Resource partitioning, the division of limited resources by species to help avoid competition, has been observed in freshwater turtle assemblages in several natural systems but has rarely been studied in tropical African ecosystems. Here, we investigate habitat preferences of two congeneric species in the family Pelomedusidae, Pelusios castaneus and P. cupulatta, in riverine/wetland habitats in the southern Ivory Coast (West Africa). Pelusios castaneus is a widespread species across West-central African savannahs and open forests, whereas P. cupulatta is endemic to the Upper Guinean forest reg

In 1985, the first Chinese distant-water fishing vessel set sail for West Africa to conduct fishing operations. Over three decades of development, Chinas distant-water fisheries have evolved into a vital sector of the nations fishing industry. Distant-water fisheries not only provide economic benefits to fishermen but are also closely tied to Chinas national interests. To safeguard the interests of Chinas distant-water fisheries, effective fisheries management is essential. Therefore, studying the participants in fisheries management is crucial for assessing the governance and future developme

Resumen
An experiment to investigate the potential of a trap-fishery for deep-water rock lobster Palinurus delagoae was conducted off the east coast of South Africa between 1994 and 1996. The 75–425 m depth interval between 27°S and 32°S was stratified according to depth and latitude, and three regions (North, Central and South) were sampled systematically over the three years. Sampling by commercial vessels operating long-lines and traps included an experimental phase (fixed fishing positions) and a commercial phase (no restriction on fishing location). Generalized linear models were used to investig
