Acupuncture is used to treat a wide variety of eye diseases, although there is little evidence about the effects of acupuncture treatment and the mechanisms responsible for them. Foot acupuncture treatment has effects in both mice and humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acupuncture treatment on ocular blood flow in mice. We evaluated ocular blood flow in C57BL/6J mice after foot acupuncture treatment using laser speckle flowgraphy. The mean blur rate, which is an index of blood flow velocity, was increased in the foot acupuncture group. Our results showed that,

This study compared the theory describing the “four pairs of blood vessels” in the Hippocratic Corpus with the description of vessels (Mai, 脉) in the Cauterization Canon of the Eleven Vessels of the Foot and Forearm. The two theories are comparable because of the time period in which they were written, the similarities between the descriptions of the Mai and blood vessels, and the treatment methods for symptoms corresponding to their dysfunctions. We discovered that the Mai theory and the blood vessel theory in the Hippocratic Corpus were conceived with similar motivations. They had a lot of c

Abstract According to WHO, about 347 million of people worldwide suffer from diabetes. Diabetes has complex etiology, and the consequences of this illness are seen in the morphological changes of many tissues and organs i.e. neuropathy leading to the risk of diabetic foot. Due to the diabetic condition, injuries to blood vessels in diabetic foot can be classified as chronic. This is because such wounds remain unresponsive to treatment for months or even years. There are many therapeutic methods employed in treating such injuries. These involve the use of silver, iodine or multi-antibiotic prep

WHO database mentions that the global anemia-affected population is 24.8%. To name a few conditions in which compromisation of the red blood corpuscles and hemoglobin occurs are iron deficiency anemia, gestational anemia, anemia due to malaria and parasitism, hemolytic anemia, sickle cell anemia. The line of treatment in case of anemia involves administration of iron supplements, plasmapheresis, steroids, blood transfusion at regular intervals, and lifestyle changes. The systematic approach applied for the pharmaceutical molecules should be equally inculcated in the case of nutraceuticals. The traditional system when woven carefully with the novel drug delivery system will give effective nutrient delivery. Functional foods have inherent nutritional value. Nutraceuticals and functional food cannot cure the anemic condition, but help the patient lead life almost like a normal individual.

Deaths from infectious diseases and trauma usually reflect poverty and political instability. Prevention requires political action to reduce the risk of war and improve the supply of food, clean water, sanitation, and shelter. Preventive medicine can help by controlling spread of infection through vaccination, health education, control of insect vectors, and treatment of disease carriers to prevent onward transmission. Many effective preventive interventions such as legislation to make seatbelts compulsory or tax tobacco should be targeted at the whole population, whereas preventive medicine provided by clinicians must target individuals. This often requires screening to detect early signs of disease (e.g. HIV infection, cancer) or markers of risk of disease (e.g. high blood pressure, intrauterine growth delay), but clinicians must be clear that something effective can be done to ameliorate the condition detected before any screening is undertaken.

Abstract Mesentery is a composite tissue composed of blood vessels, lymphatics, lymph nodes, and autonomic innervation of the midgut and hindgut that is covered by variable number of layers of peritoneum and represents the hilum of these portions of intestine. Derived from mesodermal tissues during embryogenesis, mesentery elongates and eviscerates from the coelomic cavity during elongation of gut and attains its adult disposition after return of gut to the developing coelomic cavity. This chapter discusses the various regions of the mesentery, their anatomic importance, and embryologic abnormalities that result in various internal hernias and principles of their treatment in this chapter. Infections, benign and malignant disease processes arise in mesentery from its various tissue components like lymph nodes, blood, and vessels and this chapter deals with the most important of them.

Shaikh, Saijuddin. "Sources and Health Benefits of Functional Food Components." In Functional Food [Working Title]. IntechOpen, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.104091.

Texto completo
Resumen
Functional foods are the foods claimed that have additional health benefits beyond their basic nutritional values, and functional food components are bioactive, potentially beneficial compounds that are found either naturally in foods or added to them as functional ingredients. Some important functional food components are carotenoids, isothiocyanates, soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, phenolic acids, fatty acids, plant stanols and sterols, flavonoids, polyols, soy protein, prebiotics and probiotics, phytoestrogens, vitamins, and minerals. Most of the functional food components occur mainly in plant foods (whole grains, fruits, and vegetables), however, few functional foods components, such as omega-3, -6, and -9 polyunsaturated fatty acids are also found in animal products (e.g. milk, fermented milk products, and cold-water fish). Evidence suggested that there is a relationship between functional food components and health benefits. Functional food components can be used for the treatment and prevention of different diseases. Biologically active functional food components can reduce the risk of certain non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, inflammation, and lowering of blood cholesterol. Thus, people should consume a wide variety of foods to assure the ingestion of functional food components in their body, such as fatty acids, fiber, carotenoids, flavonoids, prebiotics and probiotics, vitamins, and mineral.

Local knowledge and folk customs, in particular, play a significant role in shaping communal dietary practices and approaches to treating ailments and disease, sometimes in defiance of “official” medical knowledge and direction. In chapter 4, “Latino/a Local Knowledge About Diabetes: Emotional Triggers, Plant Treatments, and Food Symbolism,” Michael Owen Jones explores several areas of Latino/a local knowledge and belief about diabetes collected around Los Angeles, California. Here again, informant narratives powerfully reflect the critical intersection of folk culture and institutional authority. Charting explanatory models regarding causes and the course of illness or disease, the folk use of plants and botanicals to lower blood glucose levels, awareness of non-nutritional meanings and uses of food—rituals, symbols, and sources of identity—regularly ignored by dieticians, self-reported “barriers” to maintaining a recommended dietary regimen, and perceptions of the social and psychological dimensions of illness that all too rarely are considered by medical personnel, Jones sheds light into how clinical and public health officials must develop culturally sensitive treatment plans that more accurately recognize and respond to local exigencies and the preponderance of emotional and environmental stress in treating diabetes within Latino/a communities.

One-third of patients who have stent placements develop restenosis over a six-month period, with the cause thought to be hemodynamic-related. The use of stent grafts to treat aneurysms often leads to exclusion of smaller vessels adjacent to the aneurysm from the circulation, and success of this procedure may therefore depend on the size of small vessels being occluded. Gestational diabetes mellitus (MGD) is associated with poor cardiac malformation in the fetus. It is related to changes in the clinical course of the disease and pre-gestational periods. The prevalence and incidence of MGD have been increasing worldwide. Early screening, diagnosis, and lifestyle change, such as physical exercise and healthy eating, provide better outcomes for children's health. This study aims to analyze the data concerning gestational diabetes and fetal malformations and to group the various protocols for diagnosis, highlighting the risk factors associated with MGD and their

Stenting procedures give the opportunity to treat cardiovascular diseases with a time saving, cost effective and minimally invasive procedure if compared to coronary artery by-pass, ensuring at the same time better clinical results than balloon angioplasty. Despite their success, stenting procedures are still associated to some clinical problems like sub-acute thrombosis (ST) and in-stent restenosis (ISR) whose main outcome is the re-narrowing of the coronary vessels and the necessity of a new treatment to restore blood flow and perfusion to downstream tissues. Their mechanisms and causes are

Resumen
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality, and their prevalence is estimated at nearly 37% in the United States. Elevated blood glucose, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, and low levels of high-density lipoprotein, result in increased levels of inflammation and pathogenesis of various CVDs such as atherosclerosis and hypertension. Dietary γ-glutamyl valine (γ-EV), naturally found in dry beans, has exhibited beneficial biological activities to reduce chronic inflammation. The intervention of γ-EV was found to reduce the inflammatory responses in vascular endot
