In common with most other mass democratic parties the Conservative party has a large group of active members who sustain the party over time. A model is developed to explain variations in activism within the party, which takes account of the ‘paradox of participation’. The results, based on the first national random sample survey of Conservative party members, show that activism is motivated by three classes of factors. Activism is motivated, firstly, by a variety of selective incentives, such as ambitions for elective office. It is motivated, secondly, by a desire for the party to achieve pol

Resumen
This chapter compares the life that evolution produced during the past cold and warm climates of long duration. The dominant climatic state of the last several million years has been ice ages. James Lovelock has argued that these are a more favorable state for life on Earth than the present interglacials. This does not, however, sit well with various observations. During ice ages: (i) there was less land free of ice; (ii) much of the most productive parts of the ocean, the shelf seas, were turned into dry land by lower sea level; and (iii) the total mass of carbon locked up in vegetation and soils was only about half as much as today. Not only were ice ages unfortunate episodes for life on Earth, but also, conversely, the Earth during the Cretaceous was possibly even more congenial than it is today, although the evidence is not conclusive on this point.

Resumen
This chapter examines the speakership elections of 1849 and 1855–1856, the most chaotic instances of officer selection in the history of the House of Representatives. It considers how the Second Party System weakened and eventually collapsed as the slavery issue overwhelmed the interregional partisanship that had been in place for two decades. It also discusses the emergence of new political parties, such as the Free-Soil Party, the American Party, and the Republican Party, that created new avenues for coalitional organization. In particular, it looks at the rise of the Republican Party as the primary opposition party to the Democrats. Finally, it describes how the rising popularity of the new parties in congressional elections affected politicians in both the Whig Party and the Democratic Party.

New Bedford was the U.S.’s wealthiest city in the U.S., notorious nationally for its visible Black power. Its powerful Quakers patronized black leaders like Nathan Johnson, mentor to a young Frederick Douglass on his 1838 arrival. By then, black Bedforders had established a robust independent politics, forcing all parties to compete for their votes. In the 1840s, younger men like the brothers Ezra and Richard P. Johnson helped lead the local Liberty Party (and later the Free Soil and Free Democratic parties), fighting the dominant Whigs for African American votes. From 1848 through 1854, the black electorate joined a radical biracial coalition led by renegade Democrat Rodney French, Mayor in 1853-54. After 1855, Republicans incorporated black men into party and municipal offices.

Black politics matured early in Maine, led by activists like Reuben Ruby, a fixture in Portland’s politics from the 1830s to the 1860s. He worked closely with General Samuel Fessenden, who had been a leading Federalist. The latter became Maine’s leading abolitionist in the 1830s, working with Ruby in the National Republican and then Whig parties (they were both delegates at the latter’s 1834 founding convention). Although they tried to bring black voters into the Liberty Party in the 1840s, Portland’s black electorate remained strong. Whigs, led by Abram W. Niles, who held low-level city jobs and party positions. Repeatedly, these voters garnered national attention, as when the younger William Fessenden defeated Portland’s Democratic congressmen with their votes in 1840; in 1848, efforts to bring them over to the Free Soil Party were also widely publicized. By the later 1850s, the black electorate was incorporated into the Republican Party, with Ruby holding a federal patronage position.

Resumen
Water is a prerequisite for vine growth. It is essential for photosynthesis and to maintain the hydrated conditions and cell turgor necessary for a host of other biochemical processes in the plant. As we saw in chapter 4, diffusion of nutrient ions to the root, and their movement by mass flow into the vine’s “transpiration stream,” both depend on water. The volumetric water content θ, defined as the volume of water per unit volume of soil (section 3.3.2), indicates how much water the soil can hold. However, to understand what drives water movement in the soil, we must understand the forces acting on the water because they affect its potential energy. The energy status of soil water also influences its availability to plants. There is no absolute scale of potential energy. But we can measure changes in potential energy when useful work is done on a measured quantity of water or when the water itself does useful work. These changes are observed as changes in the free energy of water, which gives rise to the concept of soil water potential. The derivation of the soil water potential ψ (psi) is given in appendix 7. Historically, the energy status of soil water has been described by a number of terms related to soil water potential, such as pressure, suction, or hydraulic head. These terms ψ and their units are explained in box 6.1. The terms and head will be used in this book. Several forces act on soil water to decrease its free energy and give rise to component potentials. These are adsorption forces, capillary forces, osmotic forces, and gravity. Adsorption Forces. In very dry soils (relative humidity, RH, of the soil air <20%), water is adsorbed onto the clay and silt particles as a monolayer in which the molecules are hydrogen bonded to each other and the surface. With an increase in RH, more water molecules are adsorbed by hydrogen bonding to those on the surface. The charged surfaces of clay minerals also attract cations, and the electric field of the cation orients the polar water molecules around the ion to form a hydration shell, containing 6–12 water molecules.

Resumen
From the early 1960s through to the mid-1970s, a widespread desire on the Italian left to resist the ‘schematization of everyday life’, triggered by the pressures of politics and mass media, led to a politicization across different musical genres. The discourse of intellectuals and artists was significantly influenced by the writings of the founder of the Italian Communist Party Antonio Gramsci, and in turn led the PCI of the early 1970s to an unambiguous commitment to resist ‘any impulse to identify with any specific “poetics” or “tendency”,...to ignore the great variety of creative experiences’ (Giorgio Napolitano), whilst affirming a faith in innovation and renewal as the vehicle for oppositional sentiment. This chapter examines this complex cultural network as it manifested itself in the distinct musical terrains of folk music, rock, jazz, and free improvisation, and avant-garde music theatre.

Resumen
Under conditions of East Siberia, the positive effect of sainfoin on the fertility of gray forest soil and the introduction of this crop into fodder five-course rotations have been studied. In Siberia the Hungarian sainfoin (Onobrychis arenaria) is well-spread. As a control variant the crop rotation without perennial legume crops (sainfoin-free) was taken. Our research on the introduction of a new legume crop — sainfoin has shown that the content of mobile phosphorus, on the average in crop rotations, varies from 15.3 to 17.1 mg per 100 g of soil, the value of the nitrate nitrogen indicator —
