Resumen
A call for design proposals for three features for the National Garden was held in October, 1992 by the National Fund for the U.S. Botanic Garden. The competition called for refinement of an existing master plan developed by EDAW, a landscape architectural firm, or the design of a new concept for the National Garden. This creative project chose to develop a new master and to document the research, process, and assumptions that lead to the final design. The research will focus on the examination of the site and it's history (Washington, D.C.) and examination into the history, evolution, and relevance of botanic gardens. The underlying thesis is that the changing roles that botanic gardens have played in society have had an effect on their built form. The current role of botanic garden as a pleasure garden aswell as an educational experiences is the result of hundreds of years of evolution. By the examination of the history and changing roles of botanic gardens, this creative project will design a space that not only meets the needs of the competition, but will meet the needs of the generation at hand.

Adlard, Michelle Catherine. "The garden as a metaphor for paradise". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002187.

Texto completo
Resumen
In this half thesis the use of the garden as a metaphor for paradise has been explored. The English word “ paradise“ was derived from the Greek word “ paradeisos” which in turn was derived from the Old Avestana “ pairi-daeza,” meaning an enclosure. In Ancient Persia the concept applied to an enclosed garden in the modern sense of the word. For this reason the thesis begins with an examination of the development of the garden in this desert region. A more-or-less continuous chain of development in both the physical and allegorical nature of the garden is traced through history from these Ancient Persian beginnings to the height of Mughal architecture (epitomised by the Taj Mahal), by way of the Muslim expansion through Central Asia and Europe. While the core elements of garden design were set in Ancient Persian times, and recur throughout the period studied, the impact of Islam on the local Persian culture brought about a new development of allegorical meaning associated with the garden. This allegorical development reached its apex, too, in the Taj Mahal in which, it is argued, the metaphorical representation of paradise in the garden tomb was made astonishingly explicit. The research for this mini thesis was gathered from secondary sources, including many published books and academic papers, photographic and diagrammatic evidence of extant ancient gardens, and reproductions of carpet designs.

Wierzbicki, Kaye Jocelyn. "Garden Work: The Horticultural Formation of American Literature, 1850-1930". Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:13070044.

Texto completo
Resumen
Garden Work argues that American literature's sense of form developed as part of an ongoing theoretical conversation with the field of garden design. Of particular significance to American writers was a horticultural dispute that took on a renewed sense of urgency in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: that between the garden naturalists, who crafted gardens to look like un-designed natural spaces, and the garden formalists, who crafted gardens that visually distinguish between human and wilderness sites. This dissertation identifies a literary cohort within this horticentric period--Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sarah Orne Jewett, Edith Wharton, and Willa Cather--who enter into the naturalism/formalism debates via their garden journals, environmental reforms, manifestoes, and the design of their own yards and gardens. Though initially attracted to garden design for different reasons, these authors all become increasingly skeptical of the ideological assumptions behind garden naturalism and increasingly fascinated by old-fashioned traditions of formal gardening, such as Italian, French, and Colonial Revival gardens. Garden Work reveals both the impact that garden design has on America's literary history and the theoretical contributions that literature can make to garden design. On the one hand, the authors I study integrate their garden work into the narrative fabric of their most canonical texts, often at those moments when they are most self-reflective about what it means to produce formally innovative fiction that is nevertheless rooted in natural American landscapes. For these writers, garden formalism becomes central to their ability to imagine American literature in the wake of the American Renaissance. On the other hand, these authors are enabled by their expertise in the medium of prose fiction to identify new theoretical problems within and features of garden design. Specifically, their ability to articulate garden theory not in terms of a conflict between art and nature but rather as a dynamic relationship between form and content, a relationship they encounter repeatedly in their literary work, permits these authors to analyze in innovative ways the social, environmental, and aesthetic consequences of garden design. Ultimately, Garden Work uncovers the interwoven nature of America's garden history and its literary history.

Resumen
Plants are the unique materials of landscape architecture, and, as any landscape architect will attest, the first question likely to be posed by a new acquaintance will be about a plant. Todayâ s world offers landscape architects more and more opportunities and demands requiring a broad and thorough understanding of the unique characteristics of plants â to be plantsmen. Yet, the curricula of landscape architecture education programs nationwide are deficient in plant knowledge requirements, and by and large the state registration examinations for professional licensing do not include tests of plant knowledge. This thesis explores the idea that in addition to allowing the landscape architect to respond to those demands, plantsmanship also contributes positively beginning in the earliest stages of the design process when the landscape architect can represent plants in ways that allow him or her to cue into accumulated plant knowledge.

Butterfield, Angela. "Resilient places? : the healthcare gardens and the Maggie's Centres". Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2014. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/7494/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis takes as its focus the Maggie’s Cancer Centres exploring for the first time the impact of their designed gardens. This research is situated within the immediate context of Maggie’s ambitions as an organisation and looks closely at their design process. It is also set within the wider debates about the effects of green space on health and the historical context of the restorative garden. By exploring both historical and contemporary examples, it argues that a healthcare garden may be a space for transformation. Using four different Maggie’s gardens as case studies, the research seeks to investigate the role of these outdoor spaces and their impact on users. Through ethnographic and sensory methods, each garden is considered and mapped. It looks at the design brief and the intentions of the designers’, but the core work is an exploration of the experiences of staff and visitors. The focus is on the everyday use of these gardens as well as the design historiography. The experiences of gardens within healthcare are examined in order to expose the ways in which gardens, people, health and care are entwined. Through the qualitative research process this thesis develops a new hypothesis as to how healthcare gardens may operate – offering a new definition for them as “resilient places”. Careful analysis of the data reveals the specific networks and affordances presented by these gardens. The thesis argues, based on the evidence of users, that healthcare gardens can uniquely embrace certain “essences” where essence is defined as conveying a quality or attribute. These garden essences are identified as thresholds, sensory richness, the density of time and homeliness. The thesis also argues that a healthcare garden can provide specific and unique opportunities for care and this, in turn, can enhance the healing ethos of an organisation such as Maggie’s.

This degree thesis studies the design methodology, artistic expression and source of inspiration of two renowned Swedish designers: Gunnar Cyrén, glass artist and silversmith, and Gunilla Pontén, fashion designer.  It also investigates if they express themselves artistically in their private gardens.  Can their artistic expressions be seen in their gardens?  Has the garden inspired them in their design work?

Resumen
Botanic gardens worldwide are asked to be centers of conservation. However, little is written about conservation-specific planning and design forms botanic gardens should use to fulfill this assignment. After looking at the history of botanic gardens, with a focus on the purpose/design relationship, examining design guidelines suggested in and inferred from the literature, and presenting habitat conservation principles and sustainable construction guidelines from other areas of practice, the author developed conservation design guidelines for botanic gardens focused on conservation. The guidelines address the following five categories: (1) Mission Statement and Site Character, (2) Presentation of Native Habitats, (3) Presentation of Native Plants in Man-made Landscapes, (4) Sustainable Practices in Daily Operations, and (5) Educational Components. To illustrate the guidelines, they were applied in a hypothetical, conceptual redesign of the Belize Botanic Gardens, located near San Ignacio, Belize.

Resumen
Investigation and research into the Persian Gardens, leading this project into a step that these World Heritage Sites might have been known as sustainable construction, but the fact that water scarcity of their region is a serious threaten for all these amazing Gardens. Thus, enhancing and improving these gardens by merging, adding and adapting todays technologies can make them considered as constructions with water and energy conservation design. Based on nowadays world environment concerns, recognizing renewable and non-renewable sources of energies in a region or site can cause a miracle. Since, almost all Persian Gardens located in regions with arid and semi-arid climate, water poverty as a biggest issue and nonrenewable energy should be included as a problematic concern. There are many available active and passive strategies that can be applied in these heritage sites which decrease water consumption either directly or indirectly. Such as water harvesting, greywater reuse, photovoltaic panels and material changes. Water known as a vital element of each garden for irrigation purposes, but in Persian Garden water is more than a functional element. Thus, finding a way to provide and recycle water beside the underground sources is necessary. Subterranean, springs and wells are resources of water for Persian gardens which renew so slowly or non-renew these days. Being so close to a city with considerable population lunches and idea of using greywater for irrigation in these gardens. In this research, the doable options for energy conservation design for these sites will be discussed, then comparing some case studies in all over world where greywater reusing water system for irrigation is happening will be next step. In conclusion, greywater reusing system in urban scale in order to irrigate a filed or garden will be investigate on a Shazdeh Garden as a main case study of this research.

Many cities around the United States struggle with racially segregated neighborhoods (USA on Race 2013). The existence of isolated neighborhoods continues to reinforce racial distrust and promotes stereotypes. Some of the primary negative consequences associated with residential segregation include unequal job opportunities, greater health risk, high concentrations of poverty, educational constraints, and high building and lot vacancy rates. Residential segregation is an issue in Kansas City, Missouri along Troost Avenue. Troost Avenue is a stark racial dividing line within the city core. West of Troost Avenue, whites account for 88 percent of the population while blacks make up 93 percent of the population to the east (Troost Village Community Association 2013). The intent for this project is to create a resource to help establish and promote social interaction within the Troost Avenue neighborhoods by creating a purpose-driven community garden at the St. James Place apartment complex. The site’s unique location, positioned adjacent to other apartment complexes and subdivisions in the Citadel Neighborhood, had the potential to attract many types of users to the garden site. Through a process of literature review, surveys, interviews, and precedent study analysis, design goals were established. The design proposals for the St. James Place Community Garden focus on increasing site activity, establishing accessibility, and promoting originality.

Resumen
Landscape architects design healing gardens at healthcare facilities to support patients, visitors, caregivers, and staff. Many acknowledge that medical staff regularly visit healing gardens to escape work-related stress (Marcus and Sachs, 2014). Rarely, however, are healing gardens on medical campuses designed specifically to support physicians' well-being. There is a void in healing garden design theory. Reports on the prevalence of physician burnout, warn of a widespread crisis and dismal reality within the medical community (T. D. Shanafelt et al., 2015). Researchers pronounce an urgent need for evidence-based interventions, which address individual contributing factors to burnout (Christina Maslach, Jackson, and Leiter, 1986). By investigating the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, an evidence-based therapy, clinically proven to cultivate emotional healing, for physicians suffering burnout, this research reveals how a therapeutic garden could meld mindfulness-based practices with environmental theory; healing garden design precedents; and healthcare design typologies. Finally, mindfulness-based landscape design guidelines describe how a private, restorative, healing garden could help maintain physicians' well-being and rehabilitate physicians experiencing burnout due to emotional exhaustion within the workplace.

Resumen
As the population of the world increases and cities grow in size, we are faced with remarkable societal problems regarding sustainable food security for the generations to come. In this paper, I present and discuss HAVE (Hydroponic Agricultural Vertical Environment), a research-through-design project that explores the design of an interactive open-source vertical kitchen garden. HAVE is designed as a shareable platform, that aims to lower the barriers of entry of getting started with home gardening, to provide an option for people to play an active role in working towards a more sustainable, resilient society. By simplifying the design of a computer-assisted garden, I present an engaging interactive system that is cheap and easy to build and maintain. With HAVE as a case study, this project also aims to expand upon how plant-based interfaces can be implemented in future design work, and builds upon the topics of calm technology and material computing. As such, this paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of designing plant-based interfaces, also in relation to how people care for and interact with plants. It is my hope, that HAVE may act as a conversation piece that addresses societal challenges regarding future agriculture practices, while contributing to the academic discussion and debate on the topics of plant-based interfaces, design for social innovation, and tangible computing, and the field of interaction design in general.

This qualitative case study of an early years setting sought young children’s perspectives on what is compelling in natural outdoor play spaces and on the affordances of the elements in the space. Five themes emerged from the interpretive analysis: creative affordances; active affordances; multisensory affordances; affordances for connoisseurship; and affordances for connections. The implications invite designers and educators to listen to children’s voices and to consider the affordances of the spaces from a child’s perspective.

This creative project develops a conceptual plan for a "green", Ball State University Field Study Environmental Education Center, LandLab and Dormitory. The proposed design is ecologically responsible in construction and operation, relying upon natural qualities and resources of the site, as sources of renewable energy. In addition to enabling formal environmental education, the proposed facility is intended to foster within its students and guests, a love of life and nature, and an environmental ethic. Strategic and environmentally responsible use and placement of facility systems, variously composed of infrastructure, building, winter garden, and landscape components, results not only in interdisciplinary, experiential learning opportunities, and in replications of natural biomes; but, inherently provides healthy living conditions, in an interior environment ideally suited for human occupancy, with lush vegetation, gushing, gurgling, and splashing water, naturalistic scenery, fresh air, abundant sunlight, and warm temperatures.

The evolution of times led to the advancement of medicine and living conditions, and the improvement of hygiene and food, resulting in social and demographic changes, especially the increase of life expectancy, and the consequent increase number of elderly. At a time when there exist a greater awareness of social problems, and the difficulties of some citizens, particularly in terms of accessibility and the lack of response to their needs, it becames increasingly relevant solve these problems, mainly because besides Portugal tend to increase elderly population, the social conscience also appeals that people with disability or disabilities are entitled to enjoy the day-to-day basis, without feelings of exclusion. Thus, this work explores how the Therapeutic Gardens and their components contribute to the recovery of people and provide a sense of well-being, in environments related to health, making reference to the principles of Inclusive Design, which establish guidelines for that products, equipment and services are accessible to anyone, regardless of their age group or limitations. As a result of this study presents a preliminary study for a landscape intervention on Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, in Lisbon.

Motealleh, Parinaz. "Creating a Dementia-Friendly Environment Through the Use of an Outdoor Natural Landscape Design in a Residential Aged Care Facility". Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/401450.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: People with dementia living in institutionalised residential aged care facilities (RACFs) may manifest behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), such as agitation and apathy, resulting from their unmet needs. These unmet needs are often due to inappropriate environmental conditions, including excessive or insufficient levels of stimulation in the environment and limited opportunities for engagement. In response to these shortcomings, there has been a recent trend to improve the quality of RACF environments through the de-institutionalisation of facilities by the creation of dementia-friendly environments (DFEs) incorporating outdoor natural landscapes, such as gardens, into RACFs. Garden elements, for example, green spaces and blue spaces, have been shown to have positive impacts on the health and well-being of individuals, and this includes for older people with dementia. In the past few years, several new initiatives have been attempted to enable people with dementia to take advantage of the potential benefits of gardens by encouraging residents to spend more time in the gardens and to actively engage with garden-related activities. It has been found that to maximise the potential benefits of gardens for people with dementia, eight DFE characteristics can be incorporated into their design. However, to date, there is very little evidence about the positive outcomes of a garden that has been created with DFE characteristics on agitation, apathy and engagement for older people with dementia living in RACFs. This is due to both the paucity of studies and the limitations of previous studies, for example, the use of weak methodological approaches as well as the lack of environmental assessment of the gardens and the exclusion of an architectural design phase. Therefore, this current study aims to fill the gaps in the existing studies. Objectives: This research aims to determine the effect of a garden which had been improved according to the DFE characteristics on the level of agitation, apathy, and engagement of people with dementia living in a RACF in Queensland. Methods: This study utilised a single case study design involving two units of analysis: (1) a garden and (2) 10 people with dementia living in one RACF. This study is organised into three phases. Phase One consisted of an environmental assessment of the selected RACF garden via the Dementia Therapeutic Garden Audit Tool and an interview with the gardener of the facility, as well as the recruitment of 10 participants and the compiling of their social biographies in order to understand the participants’ needs and interests. In Phase Two, the chosen garden, Ruby Garden, improvements were identified which addressed the DFE deficiencies found during the environmental assessment in Phase One. Following this, a 3D model of the garden was created to incorporate and visualise the DFE characteristics. After the garden beds were prepared, the items consisting of softscapes and hardscapes were incorporated into the Ruby Garden based on the model created. In Phase Three, the participants were taken into the garden to experience the improved garden for 20 sessions, 5 days a week for 4 weeks, each session lasting 60 minutes. During this period, the participants’ levels of agitation, apathy and engagement was assessed. Assessment of agitation was conducted pre- (Week 0) and post-intervention (Week 5). On-site observations of engagement and apathy were conducted pre-intervention (Week 0) over one session and once a week during the 4-week intervention period except for Week 1, when two assessments took place (i.e., beginning (Week 1-1) and end (Week 1-2) of the week). At Week 8, a follow-up assessment was undertaken to determine whether the intervention effects on agitation, engagement and apathy were sustained over time. Participants’ activities in the garden were also observed every day at 10-minute intervals over the 4-week intervention period from the time they entered the garden until they left. Post-intervention qualitative interviews with the 10 participants with dementia and 10 staff were also conducted to seek their views on the improved garden. Results: The results of the environmental assessment via the Dementia Therapeutic Garden Audit Tool carried out in Phase One showed the original garden to be a poor environment for people with dementia with more than half of the assessing questions (39 out of 74 questions) scoring 0-1 (i.e., poor). The Ruby Garden was found to be successful (score of 3) in only 21 out of 74 questions. The lack of the eight DFE characteristics, particularly those concerning sensory stimulation and meaningful engagement, was noted in the Ruby Garden original design. Participants also highlighted the need for these two characteristics while their social biographies were being collected. In Phase Two the results of the post-design assessment of the garden showed that the garden was improved from the perspectives of all eight DFE characteristics. In total, the evaluation showed an increase in the total number of questions scoring very good (score of 3), from 21 for the environmental assessment phase (i.e., Phase One), to 36 for the post design assessment of the garden (i.e., Phase Two). Likewise, sensory stimulation and meaningful engagement, which were identified as the characteristics with the greater number of poor scores in Phase One, were improved in the number of questions scoring 2 or 3 (i.e., moderately good or very good) from 3 to 12 (out of 12) and from 0 to 4 (out of 7), respectively. In Phase Three the quantitative findings of the assessment of agitation of participants at Week 0 (baseline), Week 5 (post-intervention) and Week 8 (follow-up), assessed through the Cohen Mansfield agitation inventory-short form (CMAI-SF), demonstrated no significant improvement in the level of agitation following visits to the improved garden (χ 2 (2) = 5.167, p = .076). However, the results showed an increase in the level of participants’ engagement and a reduction in their level of apathy following the intervention. The statistical analysis showed a significant difference in participants’ level of engagement between Week 0 (before intervention) and during the intervention (Week 1-1, p < .01; Week 1-2, p < .01; Week 2, p < .01; Week 3, p < .05; Week 4 p < .05), where the level of engagement was higher than that before the intervention. Furthermore, the assessment of participants’ level of engagement at follow-up (Week 8) demonstrated a significantly lower level of engagement when compared to the 4 weeks of intervention (Week 1-1, p < .01; Week 1-2, p < .05; Week 2, p < .05; Week 3, p < .05; Week 4 p <.05). Similarly, the statistical analysis found a higher level of apathy in participants at Week 0 (before intervention) when compared to during the intervention (Week 1-1, p < .05; Week 1-2, p < .01; Week 2, p < .05; Week 3, p < .01; Week 4 p < .01). A significant difference was also found in participants’ level of apathy when comparing Week 8 (follow-up) and during Week 1-2 (p < .05), Week 2 (p < .05), Week 3 (p < .01) and Week 4 of the intervention (p < .05), where the level of apathy was higher at follow-up than during the intervention. A combination of deductive (concept-driven) and inductive (data-driven) thematic analysis was employed to analyse the qualitative data. Three themes were developed via the deductive approach: the presence of sensory provoking elements in the garden, meaningful engagement in the garden, and accessibility of the garden, which indicated that the improved garden was successful in providing such DFE characteristics. Moreover, two themes emerged from the inductive approach: garden impacts and garden experiences. The findings of the inductive approach showed that the improved garden had several benefits for people with dementia, staff members and families. The garden was perceived by the interviewees to improve the mood and restless behaviours of people with dementia as well as the mood of the staff members and families. The inductive qualitative results also indicated that the majority of people with dementia and other residents had a good perception and positive feedback on the garden. Nevertheless, they recommended some solutions for improving the garden, which need to be considered in the future development of the garden. Conclusions: The results of this case study demonstrated that the garden, which was improved in line with DFE characteristics, had positive outcomes for people with dementia. This finding validates and supports several previous studies reviewed in the area of creating such gardens, which showed the positive outcomes of the gardens for people with dementia. This study is the first known case study that comprehensively assessed the environment before the design, collected the participants’ social biographies and also created a 3D model for improvement of the garden. Also, it is the first intervention study that evaluated the impacts of an enhanced garden on the level of apathy as an outcome measure and it also showed promising results. Thus, this study can lay a foundation for future studies in this area.

Resumen
The purpose behind this thesis is to create a design proposal for how a present day garden created at the early 1900 can be recreated to its original design. In order to do so, the style of the garden specified to this era must be defined along with an inventory of the plants. The garden used for this specific assignment is located in Söderhamn and the property is called ‘Killingen’. The main house as well as the garden was created in the beginning of 1900. Killingen´s garden is classed as a ‘own-home garden’. These kinds of gardens were influenced by the ‘own-home movement’ which started in the 1900-century. The main purpose of this movement was to help low income families finding a better and own home with a garden. It was also there in aid of preventing the mass emigration around that period. Around this time, a very influential gardener, Rudolf Abelin, played a key role for the own-home garden’s development through his writing and widespread knowledge. For him the garden was part of the society development which also was affected and influenced by his ideas and involvement. The methods used in this thesis are mainly literature studies but also includes observations of current gardens and conversations with relevant people. Thanks to the current owner’s very ambitious and existing list of plants of the garden, it’s actually been possible to rely on literature in order to propose new plants as well as suggesting which plants were not part of the own-home movement and could therefore be removed as they are not part of the same style.

The person of Georg Potente who worked at Sanssouci Garden from 1902 until 1938, reflects the developement from a royal gardener to a public garden director - a creative garden heritage preservator. His work in historical gardens is characterized by an area of conflict typical for its time. It implies both imperatorical requirements, redesigning and modernizing of separate park areas and the often complicated re-establishment of such. It was Potentes appoach to explore the history of origin of gardens, to overlap the available historical maps and trough this to define different states of the gardens at different times. He helped to establish the scientifically based work of te developing garden heritage preservation in the 1920s.

Resumen
William Shenstone was a polymath. He wrote letters, essays, composed poetry, painted water-colours, played musical instruments and indulged in architectural design, but above all he created a landscape garden at The Leasowes in the West Midlands that became a celebrated place to visit in the eighteenth century. Shenstone worked during the early days of the English landscape garden movement, and while others created grounds with political and/or historical themes he fashioned a garden in a 'naturesque' style. He created a version, called a ferme ornée that was a distinctive form of English garden at the time. This thesis is the first detailed study of The Leasowes and presents a re-evaluation of his garden. Though many people have written about the landscape in the past, few have had the opportunity to look at it from a multidisciplinary perspective which marries an exploration of archival and literary material with landscape studies and archaeological evidence. The study evaluates why and how Shenstone created his garden. It explores his cultural networks and influences and what he did to make it distinctive. It looks at the planting regime and the verse and poetry that illuminated the garden. Finally, it discovers other gardeners who were influenced by his work before and after his death.

Resumen
Many medical institutions have installed gardens with therapeutic intent directed towards Alzheimer's patients. A large portion of these gardens however, have failed to achieve this intent. Gardens must be designed correctly in order to maximize the functionality and provide intended benefits of the garden. This study uses current literature and professional consultation to design a therapeutically functional Alzheimer's garden in a court yard space. A qualitative case study is proposed, in conjunction to the design, regarding Alzheimer nursing home resident's use of a traditionally landscaped garden. This study will generate base line data for future comparison with a case study of an Alzheimer's garden on the same re-designed site. Both the present and future case studies will use the same mixed methods procedures of quantitative behavior mapping combined with log-sheet journals, as well as qualitative interviews. It is hypothesized that current use of the traditional garden will generate valuable information regarding use of space and also support the need for future gardens designed specifically for residents with Alzheimer's disease.

Resumen
One of the most critical issues that the world faces as it enters the new millennium is the provision of a continued supply of fresh water – the source of all life. The depletion problem of this resource through uneducated use is world-wide as well as being specific to Australia. This study centres on this issue in the Australian context with particular reference to gardening practices in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. The study examines methods by which fresh water can be saved through innovative garden design options. The cultural philosophies which underpin Brisbane’s suburban residential front gardens were investigated through an examination of literature, painting, and letters of the early settlement days in Australia and, in particular in Queensland. The findings were used to establish the theoretical framework for a qualitative study of seventy two Brisbane gardeners and their gardens. These gardens were selected from sites in a corridor of seven suburbs occupying a south-east segment of the city. The corridor included these components – an outward historical growth pattern, a range of socio-economic and cultural issues, varying soil types, topographical forms and a variety of residential forms and styles with a range of compass frontages. Each selected gardener was encouraged to ‘talk’ about the garden and its design and ‘making’ and the comments were analysed in the light of the author’s theoretical investigations. The results of this investigation provided an understanding of current gardening practices which also involve the use of 50-60 per cent of Brisbane’s domestic water on the garden. The findings suggest that Brisbane’s, and indeed, Australian gardens are based on philosophical notions that have Eurocentric foundations. Alternative and innovative water saving practices were explored and these techniques were modified to suit the design and construction of Brisbane gardens, whilst still satisfying the cultural values behind existing garden practices. The conclusions suggest that if gardeners are to be convinced about adopting water saving techniques, future garden designs must meet existing norms in terms of form and function as well as being able to conserve water.

Resumen
This thesis establishes the concept of affective form as a means of examining urban design – being the intersection of architecture, planning and landscape – in relation to techniques of governance. Affective form broadly describes a built environment where people are encouraged to amend, or govern, their actions according to particular socio–political ideas. Exploration of the concept’s application as a theoretical tool is undertaken here in order to generate a means of discussing the ethical function of urban design. The emergence of notions of affective form will be located in the eighteenth century, alongside the growing confidence in the ability for humankind to effect social and cultural progress. In a series of examples, stretching throughout the twentieth century, the implicit relation of planning, architectural and landscape form to social effect is discussed. The language, and design models, used to delineate affective form are described, alongside discussion of the level of intentionality apparent in the conceptions of urban form’s social effect. Critique through affective form allows an analysis that brings together the underlying utopian elements of projects – the traces of ideology and sociological theories – with an evaluation of the formal concepts projected. As the second area of investigation, the city of Perth in Western Australia provides a contextual focus for the examination of concepts of affective form. Through a series of appropriations of urban design models a suburban archetype emerged in Perth of a planned, homogenous field of low–rise, single–family, detached dwellings within a gardenesque landscape. The process of appropriation is described as a continuing negotiation between local expectations and the implicit conceptions of affective form within the imported models. Connecting the two primary concerns of the thesis, the ability of form to influence social change and the evolution of Perth’s garden suburb ideal, is the association of that developing garden suburb model with notions of affective form. The associations are outlined through three case studies. The first is an account of the planning of the City of Perth Endowment Lands Project during the 1920s. The second describes the planning and architecture of the athlete’s village built for the VIIIth British Empire and Commonwealth Games held in Perth in 1962. The third study details the development in the 1990s of Joondalup, a satellite city in the Perth metropolitan region. The account of Perth’s garden suburb ideal is intertwined with the consideration of the varying ways in which the conceptualization of affective form has been expressed. Each case study is contextualized by a preceding chapter that discusses the particular conceptions of affective form used in its examination. Thus the main body of the thesis comprises three parts – each associated with a case study, each containing two linked chapters

This thesis documents an exploratory design process that examines the efficacy of a framework for designing dementia gardens based on: theory, Stephen and Rachel Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory (A.R.T.), (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989) and Roger Ulrich’s Theory of Supportive Gardens (Ulrich, 1999); John Zeisel’s (2007) process for designing dementia gardens; and design details, Claire Cooper Marcus’ Garden Audit Tool (2007) and Moore’s analysis of exemplary dementia gardens (2007). It documents the integration of theory that is not specific to dementia gardens (Kaplans’ A.R.T. and Ulrich’s Theory of Supportive Gardens) with process (Zeisel) and programming elements that are specific to dementia gardens (Cooper Marcus’ Garden Audit Tool Kit and Moore’s exemplary dementia gardens). The framework was developed during an illustrative courtyard design project for a retirement center whose clientele included patients with varying need levels. Throughout the illustrative design project, knowledge of the four A.R.T. characteristics (Being Away, Fascination; Compatibility and Extent) guided design decision-making in an effort to create an engaging environment, where improved health outcomes and restorative person-environment interactions could occur.

Resumen
The focus of this master’s report was to examine the sensory garden experience - a comforting space that emphasizes the broad stimulation of all 5 of the user’s senses. Tucson’s beautiful Arizona School for the Deaf & Blind (ASDB) provides an education and sense of place for its students and community; moreover it serves as a cultural resource and center for Deaf culture and developing young minds. However the problem is that the campus truly lacks an outdoor space that unifies the campus as a whole and provides an enhanced sensory experience for its student body and populace. The intent of this master’s report was to develop a set of comprehensive guidelines and principles that designers will be able to use in the future to enhance the sensory experience for deaf and blind users. These guidelines have been applied towards the design of a master plan for the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind located in Tucson, Arizona. The sensory garden serves as a means of providing students, faculty and guests with an opportunity to interact with the environment, engage in passive recreation, spaces for opportunistic meetings, the promotion of cultural awareness, and last it provides all of its users with a heightened sensory experience. This report has investigated: the various components of a sensory garden, the concept behind sensory designs, and how our senses interact in relation to spaces. The report also examined potential design standards used in DeafSpace and blind spaces, and last it examined sensory mapping and how its methods are involved in the design process.

Resumen
Abstract The research in the interdisciplinary field of natural-human-health-design has in recent decades gainedmomentum and led to new or new-old ways of thinking and acting in terms of planning and design of outdoorenvironments with the aim of health promotion. Concrete concept models and design guides have begun toemerge as a result of this research. The purpose of this work is to use these guides to develop a design proposal for a supposed health garden, with Wij Trädgårdar in Ockelbo as a base. This has been done in the form of a process description. The targetgroup for the design proposal is long-term unemployed and people who have come to Sweden as refugees.Since the specific design recommendations could not be found for the selected target group, the main materialwas general guidelines for health gardens in combination with guidelines for health gardens directed to targetgroups with stress-related problems, which is a broad target group for which there are relatively much currentresearch. The result is a process description of the progression towards a sketch on a health garden, designed for aspecific spot on Wij Trädgårdar, but available for use in other locations, provided adjustments is made to thespecific location. The sketch is supplemented with plant suggestions to different parts of the garden. A sketchof an alternative proposal is included as a smaller, faster and cheaper version of the main design proposal.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the possible design of a horticultural therapy program in Swedish correctional treatment facilities. In the USA the use of horticultural therapy in offender rehabilitation is much more frequent compared with Sweden. The aim of these programs typically contains education for inmates. Research has been made indicating that these programs can have positive effects on psychosocial behavior and on vulnerability to substance abuse among incarcerated offenders. In this study the examples of these programs was categorized and analyzed from three perspectives; Vocational, social and therapeutic horticultural programs. This information, combined with knowledge on the Swedish correctional treatment system, their clients, and information on therapeutic horticulture used in the rehabilitation garden at Alnarp in Sweden, was the information used when discussing a possible design of a horticultural therapy program in Swedish prisons and jails. The gathered information resulted in a hypothetical theory concluding that instead of having separate activities for work, education and substance abuse treatment, horticultural therapy can combine these three components and meet many of the needs that inmates have.

This is a bachlors thesis focusing on spatial design. The study examines which aspects are important in designing a garden for a residential care facility. The project has been carried out together with Stureby carehome in Svedmyra, Stockholm. The design of their garden is currently, according to staff at the accommodation, not adapted for people with dementia and the environment does not support the activities that take place in the garden. The purpose of the project has been to design an accessible outdoor garden with clear features that support the residents with dementia. In addition, the environment must be adapted to the activities that take place in the garden. The goal is that the environment should encourage increased use by residents regardless of cognitive capacity. To seek answers to the research question, qualitative data has been collected in the form of site analysis, group interview, observation and a comparison study with similar gardens at care homes. An analysis of previous research together with the collected data resulted in four main focus areas: Passivity, Activity, Availability and Year-round inside/outside. Based on these areas, a design proposal has been made with changes to the existing garden. The result is mainly aimed at residents and staff at Stureby care home, but the hope is that the study, with any adjustments, can also be transferred to hospital environments and other similar institutions where vulnerable persons reside.
