This article discusses the role of computational sciences in the fabrication of silicon nanotechnologies and devices, with particular emphasis on new scientific findings that offer great insight into such devices. It first considers how the present Si technology trend is stimulated by scientific knowledge, focusing on the potential of complimentary metaloxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology and the importance of understanding the atomisticprocess of Si thermal oxidation. It then discusses key knowledge for Si nanodevices obtainedby computational science, paying attention to the microscopic process of Si oxidation and the curious properties of high-k gate dielectrics. It also describes the possibility of Si nanowire channels as an example of computational-science-guided channel engineering and concludes with an assessment of the future trend of Si nanotechnologies driven by computational science, including Si nanowires, GaAs nanoWires, and carbon nanotubes.

‘Ventilator System Composition’ describes in depth, each of the six essential parts: the electrical supply, compressed gas supply, ventilator, breathing circuit, artificial airway, and the patient’s lungs. The chapter discusses the internal design of the ventilator, particularly the inspiratory channel and expiratory channel, and the use of a proportional valve. It describes the structure of the various breathing circuits or patient circuits that are used, and their relationship to the humidifier in use. Next, the author addresses the artificial airway or non-invasive patient interface, and finally the additional components that are added to the airway, components that add dead space and resistance to the circuit.

Resumen
This chapter discusses the evolution of the global gag rule and the existing evidence on its effects. When it was announced in Mexico City, the policy created global uproar with its abrupt change in position on population control and abortion. Pressure from domestic antiabortion groups weighed heavily in the administration’s new policy stance on family-planning assistance. Subsequent rescissions and reinstatements of the global gag rule have caused large fluctuations in US funding for family planning, as demonstrated in the chapter’s analysis of aggregate data. Evidence from qualitative studies indicates that the restrictions on US family-planning assistance under George Bush beginning in 2001 caused major disruptions in service delivery, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This evidence is crucial for understanding the channels through which women’s reproductive health outcomes are related to restrictions on US foreign aid.

Colombia is in a privileged position to take advantage of international climate agreements to finance sustainable development initiatives. The country is a signatory of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreements. As a non-Annex I party to the UNFCCC, Colombia produces low emissions in relation to global numbers (0.46% of total global emissions for 2010) and exhibits biogeographical conditions that are ideal for mitigation of climate change through greenhouse gas sequestration and emission reductions. Simultaneously, recent extreme climatic events have harshly compromised the country’s economy, making Colombia’s vulnerability to climate change evident.While these conditions should justify a strong approach to climate change communication that motivates decision making and leads to mitigation and adaptation, the majority of sectors still fall short of effectively communicating their climate change messages. Official information about climate change is often too technical and rarely includes a call for action. However, a few exceptions exist, including environmental education materials for children and a noteworthy recent strategy to deliver the Third Communication to the UNFCCC in a form that is more palatable to the general public. Despite strong research on climate change, particularly related to agricultural, environmental, and earth sciences, academic products are rarely communicated in a way that is easily understood by decision makers and has a clear impact on public policy. Messages from the mass media frequently confuse rather than inform the public. For instance, television news refers to weather-related disasters, climate variability, and climate change indiscriminately. This shapes an erroneous idea of climate change among the public and weakens the effectiveness of communications on the issue.The authors contrast the practices of these sectors with those of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in Colombia to show how they address the specific climate communication needs facing the country. These NGOs directly face the challenge of working with diverse population groups in this multicultural, multiethnic, and megadiverse country. NGOs customize languages, channels, and messages for different audiences and contexts, with the ultimate goal of building capacity in local communities, influencing policymakers, and sensitizing the private sector. Strategies that result from the work of interdisciplinary groups, involve feedback from the audiences, and incorporate adaptive management have proven to be particularly effective.

The cardiac conduction system represents the ‘wiring’ of the heart and orchestrates the propagation of the electrical activity to synchronize heartbeats. It is built from specialized cardiomyocytes expressing a subset of ion channels and gap junctions indispensable for their electrophysiological properties. Although representing only a very small volume of the heart, the conduction system plays a crucial role in the appearance of cardiac arrhythmias. The cells forming the conduction system are derived from the same cardiac progenitors as the working cardiomyocytes, and the choice between these two fates is acquired during embryonic development. The components of the conduction system are progressively established during cardiac morphogenesis and converge to form an integrated electrical system in the definitive heart. This chapter will discuss recent advances using mouse genetic approaches which have improved understanding of the cellular origin and the transcriptional regulatory networks involved in the development of the conduction system.
