Inca imperial rule depended on the production and distribution of cloth and pottery of different qualities. These were produced by specialists, such as the acllacona and cumbicamayos, and were used in performances of state hospitality that reciprocated the labor service (mit’a) of Inca subjects, and given as rewards. Production of these prestige goods indicates hybrid practices across the empire, as well as the role of gender and class in the labor patterns sustaining the empire. In addition to specialist by Inca artisans, the evidence from archaeology and the colonial chronicles indicates widespread participation in craft production in the Inca political economy.

Resumen
The handbook is a reference work of thirty-two essays jointly written by specialists in the history of military and war and experts in gender and women’s history. The collection, covering four centuries from the Thirty Years’ War to the present Wars of Globalization, investigates how gender contributed to the shaping of warfare and the military and was at the same time transformed by them. The essays explore this question by focusing on themes such as the cultural representations of military and war; war mobilization of and war support by society; war experiences on the home fronts and battlefronts; gendered war violence; military service and citizenship; war demobilization, postwar societies, and memories; and attempts to regulate and tame warfare and prevent new wars. The volume covers chronologically the major periods in the development of warfare since the seventeenth century. Its content reflects the state of research on the history of gender and war. Therefore, the main geographical focus of the handbook in several chapters is on the best explored regions of eastern and western Europe, the Americas and Australia. But it also systematically covers the long-term processes of colonization and empire-building originating in early modern Europe and their aftermath in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia, which are more recent fields of research. Thus, the handbook allows for both temporal comparisons that explore continuities and changes in a long-term perspective and regional comparisons, as well as an assessment of transnational influences on the entangled relationships between and among gender, warfare, and military culture. All essays are thematic, comparative or transnational.

Resumen
This article examines the relationship between genders and world history studies. Gender is commonly held to be a neglected topic in world historical scholarship. We could point to the ever-growing body of scholarship that has outlined how gender is implicated in the full range of human activities. The relations that bind men and women, men and men, and women and women together in social, political, economic, and cultural activities are so fundamental a part of human experience that they cannot be glossed over, passed by or passed on as the province of specialist historians. The discussion argues that there is no shortage of writing on gender in world history. What is still lacking, however, is widespread awareness of the extent to which gender shapes world historical research, writing, and teaching, particularly works in which women are not mentioned.

Resumen
Equity and Access attempts to unravel the complex narrative of why inequities in the health sector are growing and access to basic health care is worsening, and the underlying forces that contribute to this situation. It draws attention to the way globalization has influenced India’s development trajectory as health care issues have assumed significant socio-economic and political significance in contemporary India. The volume explains how state and market forces have progressively heightened the iniquitous health care system and the process through which substantial burden of meeting health care needs has fallen on the individual households. Twenty-eight scholars comprising social scientists, medical experts, public health experts, policy makers, health activists, legal experts, and gender specialists have delved into the politics of access for different classes, castes, gender, and other categories to contribute to a new field of ‘health care studies’ in this volume. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach within a broader political-economy framework, the volume is useful for understanding power relations within social groups and complex organizational systems.

Resumen
The transformation of women’s lives in the past century is among the most significant and far-reaching social and economic phenomena, affecting not only women, but also their partners and children. This Handbook provides the first comprehensive collection of essays that addresses these issues, using the powerful framework of economics. The essays are divided into three broad sections—marriage and fertility; the labor market; and special topics and policy issues. Separate and special attention is given to developed and developing economies, because the constraints women face and the key policy issues vary by level of development. While the primary focus is economics, where appropriate, the essays incorporate the newest interdisciplinary research about gender from biology and other disciplines. These essays will be of value to a wide range of readers, from specialists to students, and also to scholars in other disciplines seeking an overview of the most current research approaches and findings in economics.

Resumen
The Oxford Handbook of Johannine Studies offers a comprehensive introduction to and discussion of contemporary study of the Gospel and Letters of John. The 24 chapters, all written by leading specialists in the field, cover the text and literary sources of the Johannine literature; its historical origins and context; and its conceptual background in Greek and Jewish thought, as well as its relationship to and reception among the Gnostics. Separate chapters discuss recent approaches to the Gospel and Letters from narrative, gender-related, ideological, and sociological perspectives, as well as their use of symbolism. The major Johannine theological themes are all discussed, including the role of ‘the Jews’, the attitude to Scripture and law, dualism, eschatology, the person and purpose of Jesus, the experience of eternal life and the Spirit, and ethics. The place of the Johannine literature in the church’s canon and the emergence of a commentary tradition close the volume. Each chapter gives a balanced overview of scholarly debate, while also offering a clearly presented response from the perspective of the author.

Resumen
This fourth edition of the DSIB presents the main results of the research carried out under four broad-based projects jointly developed by researchers and actors involved in topics of great social relevance such as responsible gambling, Cooperative-Intelligent transport Systems, gender dimension of alcohol addiction and support and care for victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation. This issue comprises the following four briefings: 1. What would sports betting advertising be like if it were handled more responsibly? will analyse the structure of sports betting advertising, in an attempt to understand whether such advertising could become a public health issue. This briefing examines different works that have led to scientific publications and presents their main conclusions as well as the major recommendations for gambling companies and regulators. 2. How can artificial intelligence reduce road traffic accidents and prevent congestion? This briefing seeks to present the benefits of the TIMON system for optimising traffic management and urban transport network operations in cities, directly supporting transport managers in their decision-making processes for transport operations. 3. Gender inequalities in matters of drug addiction: how does alcoholism really affect women? aims to study the phenomenon of drug dependence from a gender perspective. This involves identifying what kind of socio-cultural and psychological representations are involved in women, according to their gender role, so that they develop a series of risk factors for them, both for the beginning of consumption and in its continuity. In addition, the research team proposes guidelines for a specialized care for women in this area, in order to increase the effectiveness of required interventions. 4. Key points for supporting and accompanying victims and survivors of human trafficking for sexual exploitation is intended as a working document for specialists involved in the prevention and detection of cases and in support and care for victims. It seeks to fill the current gaps and meet the needs of women victims of trafficking providing a better response to their situations.

Resumen
In recent years, Japan’s cuisine, or washoku, has been eclipsing that of France as the world’s most desirable food. UNESCO recognized washoku as an intangible cultural treasure in 2013, and Tokyo boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than Paris and New York combined. Together with anime, pop music, fashion, and cute goods, cuisine is part of the “Cool Japan” brand that promotes the country as a new kind of cultural superpower. This book offers insights into many different aspects of Japanese culinary history and practice, from the evolution and characteristics of particular foodstuffs, to their representation in literature and film, to the role of foods in individual, regional, and national identity. It features contributions by both noted Japan specialists and experts in food history. The book poses the question, “What is washoku?” What culinary values are imposed or implied by this term? Which elements of Japanese cuisine are most visible in the global gourmet landscape and why? Chapters from a variety of disciplinary perspectives interrogate how foodways have come to represent aspects of a “unique” Japanese identity and are infused with official and unofficial ideologies. They reveal how Japanese culinary values and choices, past and present, reflect beliefs about gender, class, and race; how they are represented in mass media; and how they are interpreted by state and nonstate actors, at home and abroad. Chapters examine the thoughts, actions, and motives of those who produce, consume, promote, and represent Japanese foods.

Resumen
Much of the debates on commercial surrogacy are marked by the interventions and involvement of the assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this chapter the medico-technological process of commercial surrogacy is seen through the involvement of IVF specialists, embryologists in their identification and understanding of genes and kinship. The chapter also explores the ways in which fertility clinics negotiate with the practice of commercial surrogacy by invoking Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) draft law on surrogacy and reproductive technologies. The chapter looks at how medicine does not always operate within a tradition of rationality but often invokes local-folk wisdom of kin and kinship to understand the consequences of assisted conception. In that sense IVF specialists, clinicians, and embryologists often become ‘matchmakers’ invoking an idea of genes and biology that is not embedded in scientific rationality.

The members of the team, which includes researchers coming from the Center for European Studies of the N. N. Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Department of Europe of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera) of the RAS, aswell as a number of invited scholars, focused their attention on a broad range of problems related to the Europeans’ food culture and eating habits. The socio-anthropological research is drawing upon the field data collected by the authors, archival and historiographical material, and other kinds of sources. While studying the sociocultural role of food in Europe, special emphasis is given to alimentary practices and sources of the tradition, food and identity, system of nutrition and sociality, cuisine and gender, food as a symbol and a political instrument, taste in cultures, ethnic cuisine and authentic receipts, and meal, etiquette and ritual. The book consists of five parts divided into 16 chapters, each dedicated to its own subject-matter illustrated with examples from a given region, ethnic group, or food-related phenomenon. Resumen
Nephronophthisis (NPHP) is a clinically heterogeneous autosomal recessive cystic kidney disease and the leading genetic cause of end-stage renal failure in children and young adults. Whilst enlarged dysplastic cystic kidneys are associated with infantile NPHP, more typically renal ultrasound reveals normal kidney size and corticomedullary cysts in a child with polyuria and secondary enuresis. Extrarenal manifestations occur in 10–15% including retinal degeneration, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia and liver fibrosis, requiring referral to other specialists. Mutations in 18 genes have been identified to cause NPHP, but a genetic diagnosis still cannot be found in many patients. NPHP is classified as a ciliopathy because of the localization of the protein products of the associated genes. Currently there is no specific therapy for NPHP.

Resumen
The aetiology of disorders of sex development (DSD) is multifactorial and includes chromosomal defects, developmental abnormalities of the gonads, and defects of hormonal synthesis and expression. Infants born with ambiguous genitalia require urgent investigation because of the risk of hyponatraemia associated with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and to permit an informed decision on gender assignment. CAH is the commonest form of DSD, accounting for around 80% of all infants born with ambiguous genitalia. Despite controversy regarding timing and consent, feminizing genitoplasty in early childhood remains the accepted management for girls with significant clitoromegaly. Surgical reconstruction for 46XY DSD is guided by several factors, notably the size of the phallus and gonadal phenotype. The majority of individuals with disorders of sex development will require ongoing specialist care and long-term multidisciplinary follow-up and support.

This article discusses how learning and teaching in music are shaped by processes outside the individual, not least because of the influences of group membership (allied to age and gender), performance expectations and practices, and professional and institutional cultures. The process of individual induction into the characteristics of a particular musical culture by teachers and institutions influences the formation of identities in music, for better or for worse, at least in terms of dominant models within the culture. Indeed, the development of music teachers themselves can be seen within an activity system, i.e. the teacher's understanding of their role is developed both by informal personal reflection of the experience of performance and their own learning, and, more systematically, through their own induction process by attendance at a specialist, pedagogically focused institution.

Resumen
Eighteenth-century writers on music recognized a spectrum of learned styles. These included not only the imitative counterpoint characteristic of the fugue and the species counterpoint associated witha cappellapolyphony, but also a broad range of other styles, such as strict style, church style, orstile antico, transmitted from specialist to specialist over many decades and even centuries. The topic of the learned style, however, was a special formation or intensification of texture that occurred within the norms of late eighteenth-century phrasing, harmony, and texture. The tension between learned styles (each grounded in certain genre traditions) and learned style (the versatile and itinerant topic) informs not only the various manifestations of the learned style, which can be used for various formal purposes, but also its signification, which springs from the concerns of order and tradition that accompanied the transmission of learned styles from generation to generation.

Resumen
This book, by Australia's ladybird beetle specialist, Dr Adam Slipinski, illustrates Australia's diverse and fascinating ladybird beetle fauna — the commoner spotted species and the many others that are striped, glossy, and even very hairy. Most are predatory, but some are leaf feeders. This book reviews all 57 currently recognised genera of Australian Coccinellidae, recognising 260 valid described species, and including some genera and species newly described here. All genera are diagnosed, described and illustrated and a key to their identification is provided. Larvae of 30 species are described, illustrated and keyed. Sets of colour and black and white plates display these often beautifully colourful beetles, and their key features. The book is a must for all people interested in Australia's beetle fauna, in biocontrol and in natural resource management. This book was originally published in hardback by Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) in 2007 and is now available in a digital format.

Resumen
Binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa, particularly milder cases, often go unrecognized and untreated in primary care practice settings. Eating disorders are frequently associated with shame, and masked by other prominent physical and psychiatric conditions that demand attention. Among adults, binge eating disorder, the most prevalent of the eating disorders, occurs with increasing frequency, in tandem with higher rates and degrees of obesity, across all age ranges, and in both genders. Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa are more common in females, and although they are most often seen in pediatric and adolescent medicine practices cases, they are also seen in adult practice populations. This chapter describes pathways by which primary care practices can implement integrated and collaborative care treatment programs, likely to benefit large numbers of patients, and effectively coordinate with specialist levels of care, as necessary.

Resumen
A multi-celled organism consists of specialized cells organized into a variety of communities. ‘Specialization and diversity’ shows that community-based organization extends both downward and upward from the level of organisms, giving rise to the hierarchies that characterize complex adaptive systems. Diverse specialist agents attend to, and process, selected signals. The diversity is sustained by a combination of boundaries, signals, and signal-processing. A characteristic of this signal-processing is that relatively small parts of signals—tags—route the signals through the boundaries. This tag-based control allows cells to exist in a diverse range of conditions by activating only genes that are relevant to the current situation.

“Masters Literature” constitutes China’s most influential and productive repository of philosophical thought, featuring debates about fundamental questions of social order, the good life, governance, heavenly justice, human character, and the cosmos. The chapter first discusses how people have defined the Masters corpus from antiquity to the present and how divergent definitions affect our understanding of this textual genre. It then surveys the most important intellectual camps and approaches within Masters Literature, namely Confucians, Mohists, Persuaders, Lao-Zhuang and Huang-Lao Daoism, statecraft specialists, encyclopedic compendia, and Han masters and scholar-officials, asking in each case what central intellectual concerns were at stake and what major rhetorical formats and strategies were used to make convincing arguments. Lastly, it touches on how Masters Literature is significant today and what kind of debates it has catalyzed for the present.

Resumen
How was the multiplied, printed image encountered in Shakespeare’s London? This chapter examines a range of genres and themes for single sheet, illustrated broadsides in an emerging, specialist print market. It discusses how such images were used to persuade and to entertain a potentially broad cross-section of society along moral, political and religious lines, and according to both topical and commercial interests. The mimetic nature of the English print in both engraved and woodcut form is highlighted, with its frequent adaptation of continental models to suit more local concerns. Consideration is also given to the survival of certain images in later seventeenth-century impressions, indicative of popularity and the common commercial practice of reprinting stock from aging plates and blocks, and the sporadic nature of censorship upon the illustrated broadside.

Resumen
This volume, which brings together thirteen essays written by international specialists in the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece, pursues a new approach to ancient Greek narrative beyond the taxonomies of structuralist narratologies. Focusing on the phenomenal and experiential dimension of our response to narrative, it triangulates ancient narrative with ancient criticism and cognitive approaches. Concepts such as immersion and embodiment help to establish a more comprehensive understanding of ancient narrative and ancient reading habits, as manifested in Greek criticism and rhetorical theory. At the same time, the rich ancient material opens up a historical perspective for cognitive studies. The individual chapters tackle a wide range of narrative genres, broadly understood, besides epic, historiography, and the novel, also tragedy and early Christian texts, while also considering such media as dance and sculpture. They do so with the help of a rich set of theoretical and methodological tools, taken from cognitive studies, phenomenology, and linguistics.

Resumen
This collection of original essays highlights the intertwined fates of the modern short story and periodical culture in the period 1880–1950, the heyday of magazine short fiction in Britain. Through case studies that focus on particular magazines, short stories and authors, chapters investigate the presence, status and functioning of short stories within a variety of periodical publications – highbrow and popular, mainstream and specialised, middlebrow and avant-garde. Examining the impact of social and publishing networks on the production, dissemination and reception of short stories, this essay collection foregrounds the ways in which magazines and periodicals shaped conversations about the short story form and prompted or provoked writers into developing the genre.

Resumen
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem, genetic disorder that results from mutations in TSC1 or TSC2 genes. Neurological and neuropsychiatric disabilities include epilepsy, intellectual disability, autism, attention deficit disorder, and generalized anxiety. Cortical dysplasias (also known as tubers) are developmental abnormalities of the cerebral cortex that are believed to be responsible for seizures, cognitive disability, and autism. Subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs) are intraventricular tumours that can cause hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure, and death. TSC results from hyperactivation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in neurons in the brain. This chapter reviews the clinical presentations of TSC as well as diagnostic approaches for epilepsy and SEGAs. It discusses the genetics and cellular pathogenesis of TSC as well as reviewing the link to mTOR signalling. This chapter also presents evidence for different treatment modalities for seizures and SEGAs. It is written for qualified specialist physicians and caregivers.

Resumen
Elachistine moths are the World’s most species-rich group of Lepidoptera that specialise on monocotyledon plants, especially grasses and sedges. This volume is the first reference to describe the so-far unknown diversity of these leaf-mining moths in Australia. It provides a new generic classification for the group on a worldwide basis, and describes in detail the genera and species that occur in Australia. Keys to genera and species, as well as generic, subgeneric and species group descriptions are given, richly supplied with illustrations of larvae, pupae and adult moths. In addition, the external appearance and the male and female genitalia of all species are described. The volume contains redescriptions of all 11 previously named valid species, and descriptions of no less than 137 species new to science, of which 128 are formally named, increasing the known species richness of Australian Elachistinae by more than an order of magnitude. The diverse Australian Elachisine fauna is nearly entirely endemic, and concentrates on the more humid coastal and montane regions. Given the wealth of biological information, the book provides a basis for conservation consideration of Elachistinae, many of which are dependent on diminishing fragments of suitable habitat.

Resumen
In the rapidly growing study of amateur film, this groundbreaking book addresses the development of British women's amateur visual practice. Drawing upon social and visual anthropology, imperial and postcolonial studies and British, Commonwealth and gender history, the authors explore how women in Britain and overseas, used the evolving technologies of moving imagery to create visual stories about their lives and times. Locating the making, watching and sharing of women's recreational film-making against wider societal, technological and ideological changes, British Women Amateur Filmmakers discloses how women from varied backgrounds negotiated changing lifestyles, attitudes and opportunities as they created first personal visual narratives about themselves and the world around them. Using non-fictional films and animations, the authors invite readers to view films through different interpretative lens and provide detailed contexts for their case-studies and survey of over forty women amateur filmmakers. Whether in remote communities, suburban homes, castles, missionary or diplomatic enclaves, or simply travelling as intrepid sightseers, women filmed their companions, other people and their surroundings, not only as observers but often displaying agency, autonomy and aesthetic judgment during decades when careers, particularly after marriage, were often denied in film and other professions. Research across Britain on films in private hands and specialist archives, interviews and extensive study of the Institute of Amateur Cinematographers (IAC's) collections enable the authors to reposition an activity once thought of as overwhelmingly male and middle class.

Resumen
Greek Music in America: A Reader provides a foundation for understanding the scope, practice, and development of Greek music in America through essays by the principal scholars in the field. This is the first book to offer a comprehensive view of the subject; despite the richness, diversity, and longevity of Greek music in America, there has been relatively little available on the topic. The volume includes several previously published essays, as well as recent work by contemporary specialists on the Greek diaspora. The book opens with a sociohistorical overview of Greek music in America, followed by four major sections. The essays brought together in Musical Genre, Style, and Content cover topics ranging from changes in sacred music in the United States to Café Aman, rebetika, amanedes, Turkish influences, and verbal interjections in musical performances. In the Places section, authors interrogate the musical culture of specific Greek American communities. Delivering the Music: Recording Companies and Performance Venues examines the many ways that music was made available. Profiles provides biographical sketches of noteworthy individuals or entities that shaped the course of Greek music in America or contributed to its allure and perpetuation through their exceptional skills. An additional essay on publicly available Greek music collections completes the book.

Resumen
This book explores the rhetorical, literary, and performance strategies through which violence appears and persists in early modern French tragedy, a genre long understood as passionless and refusing all violence. The mythological figure of Medea, foreigner who massacres her brother, murders kings, burns down Corinth, and kills her own children, can serve as a paradigm for this violence. An alternative to western philosophy’s ethical paradigm of Antigone, the Medean presence offers a model of radically persistent and disruptive outsiderness—for classical theater and its wake in literary theory. In the Wake of Medea explores a range of artistic strategies integrating violence into drama: rhetorical devices like ekphrasis, dramaturgical special effects, and shifts in temporal structures. The full range of this Medean presence appears in literal treatments of Medea (Médée, La Conquête de la Toison d’Or) and in tragedies figuratively invoking a Medean presence (Hercule mourant, Phèdre, Athalie). Of interest to specialists, political theorists, and students of theater, it explores works by well-known dramaturges (Racine, Corneille) alongside a breadth of neoclassical political theater (spectacular machine plays, Neo-Stoic parables, didactic Christian theater). In the Wake recognizes the Medean force within these tragedies, while also exploring why violence remains so integral to literature and arts today.

Resumen
Langtext engl.: Otto von Gierke (1841–1921) has had a lasting influence on key terms and concepts related to the modern understanding of the state. This volume is divided into three systematic parts, in which Gierke's political and legal thinking is analysed from the different specialist perspectives of sociology, history, political science and jurisprudence. The focus of these different perspectives is his organic understanding of law and the state, which he consciously developed in different genres. At the same time, it also becomes clear what, if anything, can be taken from Otto von Gierke’s ideas for our own contemporary understanding of the state. The principle of subsidiarity and Gierke's strong emphasis on the role of communities and corporations below the state level, for example, make this particularly tangible. Gierke's work develops the relationship between cooperative law and constitutional law, thus succeeding in developing an innovative, organic understanding of law and the state on the basis of a comprehensive historical analysis. Prof. Dr. Peter Schröder is Professor of the History of Political Thought in the Department of History at University College London. With contributions by Niall Bond, Martin Espenhorst, Ben Holland, Céline Jouin, Jasper Kunstreich, Peter Nitschke, Tilman Repgen, Joachim Rückert, Jan Schröder, Peter Schröder and Helga Spindler.

Resumen
This collaborative Oxford Handbook of Borderlands in the Iberian World integrates interdisciplinary approaches to illustrate the historical processes that produced borderlands in the Americas and connected them to global circuits of exchange and migration in the early modern world, extending from the fifteenth to the nineteenth-centuries. It brings together specialists in the Spanish and Portuguese imperial spheres, their geographic and cultural borderlands in both South and North America, and their maritime networks across the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its objectives emphasize (1) scholarship published in Latin America as well as new research published in diverse academic communities; (2) transdisciplinary research in fields such as ecology, archaeology, art history, geography, musicology, and anthropology that inform the current field of borderlands scholarship; (3) accessible language and imagery to make this work appeal widely to students, teachers, and scholars. “Borderlands” as a concept and a field of academic inquiry has opened new dimensions of interdisciplinary and critical thought in the last quarter-century at the same time that ethnohistorical approaches to imperialism and colonialism have produced critical analyses of European imperial spheres in the Americas and other world regions. This Handbook offers new research on environmental change, powerful indigenous federations in both North and South America, gendered histories in the mixed and volatile social fabrics of borderlands, indigenous enslavement and the complex degrees of difference between freedom and bondage, Afro-descendant populations in the Spanish and Portuguese borderlands, interethnic relations, and cultural productions in the arts and sciences.

Resumen
This book is a ground-breaking study of the phenomenon of migration in and to England over the medieval millennium, between c. AD 500 and c. AD 1500. It reaches across traditional scholarly divides, both disciplinary and chronological, to investigate, for the first time, the different types of data and scholarly methods that reveal evidence of migration and mobility within the medieval kingdom of England. England offers the opportunity for studying migration and migrants over the longue durée, because it has been a recognisable political unit for over a millennium and because a wealth of source material has survived from these centuries. The data vary unevenly in quality and quantity across this period, but become considerably more powerful through multi-disciplinary approaches to data collection and interpretation. Fifteen subject specialists synthesise and extend recent research in a wide range of disciplines, including archaeology, art history, genetics, historical linguistics, history, literature and onomastics. They evaluate the capacity of different genres of evidence for addressing questions around migration and its effects on the identities of groups and individuals within medieval England, as well as methodological parameters and future research potential. The book therefore marks an important contribution to medieval studies, and to modern debates on migration and the free movement of people, arguing that migration in the modern world, and its reverberations, cannot be completely understood without taking a broad historical perspective on the topic.

Kirchman, David L. Community structure of microbes in natural environments. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789406.003.0004.

Texto completo
Resumen
Community structure refers to the taxonomic types of microbes and their relative abundance in an environment. This chapter focuses on bacteria with a few words about fungi; protists and viruses are discussed in Chapters 9 and 10. Traditional methods for identifying microbes rely on biochemical testing of phenotype observable in the laboratory. Even for cultivated microbes and larger organisms, the traditional, phenotype approach has been replaced by comparing sequences of specific genes, those for 16S rRNA (archaea and bacteria) or 18S rRNA (microbial eukaryotes). Cultivation-independent approaches based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing have revealed that natural microbial communities have a few abundant types and many rare ones. These organisms differ substantially from those that can be grown in the laboratory using cultivation-dependent approaches. The abundant types of microbes found in soils, freshwater lakes, and oceans all differ. Once thought to be confined to extreme habitats, Archaea are now known to occur everywhere, but are particularly abundant in the deep ocean, where they make up as much as 50% of the total microbial abundance. Dispersal of bacteria and other small microbes is thought to be easy, leading to the Bass Becking hypothesis that “everything is everywhere, but the environment selects.” Among several factors known to affect community structure, salinity and temperature are very important, as is pH especially in soils. In addition to bottom-up factors, both top-down factors, grazing and viral lysis, also shape community structure. According to the Kill the Winner hypothesis, viruses select for fast-growing types, allowing slower growing defensive specialists to survive. Cultivation-independent approaches indicate that fungi are more diverse than previously appreciated, but they are less diverse than bacteria, especially in aquatic habitats. The community structure of fungi is affected by many of the same factors shaping bacterial community structure, but the dispersal of fungi is more limited than that of bacteria. The chapter ends with a discussion about the relationship between community structure and biogeochemical processes. The value of community structure information varies with the process and the degree of metabolic redundancy among the community members for the process.

Texto completo
Resumen
Hypermobility-related syndromes constitute a family of heritable disorders of connective tissue (HDCT) that derive from abnormalities affecting genes that encode for the connective tissue matrix proteins such as collagen, fibrillin, and tenascin. They range from such commonplace though poorly recognized conditions such as the joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) to the better-known, if more rare, eponymous syndromes such as Marfan's syndrome (MFS) and the different types of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). The more common presentations are with skin pathology (bruising, scaring), joint or spinal and/or muscle pain and instability with vulnerability to injury and chronic widespread pain, cardiac valve pathologies, and in MFS and vascular EDS, arterial dilatation with the risk of dissection and rupture. JHS (widely considered synonymous with the EDS hypermobility type) is further complicated by cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction such as orthostatic intolerance, palpitations, and syncope, and the recently described and commonly encountered pangastrointestinal dysmotility. The latter can manifest as gastro-oesophageal reflux, gastroparesis, slow-transit constipation, or rectal evacuatory dysfunction with rectal intussusception. In addition, HDCT are associated with bladder and uterine problems as a consequence of pelvic floor weakness. Such multisystemic conditions need to be managed by a multidisciplinary team able to draw on medical, surgical, physical, and psychological interventions by appropriately experienced specialists and therapists. This chapter introduces the reader to the epidemiology, genetics, classification, and clinical presentation of JHS, EDS, and MFS. It also describes the key investigations required to support a diagnosis and assess complications of an HDCT, as well as the multidisciplinary approach to management.
