Abstract The identity and concentration of the carbon-containing molecules entering the developing cells of the immature cereal endosperm are not known with any certainty. The main source of carbon for starch synthesis is generally believed to be sucrose (Jenner 1982; Duffus 1992), the evidence for this being based partly on observations by Porter (1962) which showed that sucrose is the major transport material in higher plants.
