We propose a method for treating Dirichlet boundary conditions for the Laplacian in the framework of the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM). A particular interest is taken in boundary data with low regularity (possibly a distribution). Our method is based on using approximate Dirichlet boundary conditions and polynomial approximations of the boundary. The sequence of GFEM-spaces consists of nonzero boundary value functions, and hence it does not conform to one of the basic Finite Element Method (FEM) conditions. We obtain quasi-optimal rates of convergence for the sequence of GFEM approx

The generalized finite element method (GFEM) is applied to a nonconventional hybrid-mixed stress formulation (HMSF) for plane analysis. In the HMSF, three approximation fields are involved: stresses and displacements in the domain and displacement fields on the static boundary. The GFEM–HMSF shape functions are then generated by the product of a partition of unity associated to each field and the polynomials enrichment functions. In principle, the enrichment can be conducted independently over each of the HMSF approximation fields. However, stability and convergence features of the resulting n

This paper is an overview of the main ideas of the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM). We present the basic results, experiences with, and potentials of this method. GFEM is a generalization of the classical Finite Element Method — in its h, p, and h-p versions — as well as of the various forms of meshless methods used in engineering.

Prediction and simulation of load-related reflective cracking in airfield pavements require 3D models in order to accurately capture the effects of gear loads on crack initiation and propagation. Furthermore, the size relations between aircraft landing gear, pavement area and reflective cracks make this a multi-scale problem. This paper presents a generalized finite element method (GFEM) based on the solution of interdependent global and local problems. The macro-scale component of the solution is approximated by a finite element global model, while the fine-scale is addressed by a local model

Abstract One of the most widespread methods to the nonlinear analysis of structures is the Finite Element Method (FEM). However, there are phenomena whose behavior is not satisfactorily simulated by the standard FEM and this fact has quickened the development of new strategies such as the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM), understood as a variation of the FEM. In parallel, nonlinear analysis of concrete structures requires the use of constitutive models that represents the nucleation and propagation of cracks. In this paper it is used an anisotropic constitutive model, based on the micr

Abstract This chapter introduces the Global Forest Products Model (GFPM). The general model structure and the mathematical formulation of the GFPM are provided and key differences and similarities to the modeling approaches developed in the previous chapters are highlighted. The usefulness of the GFPM as a forest sector tool for policy analysis is illustrated by summarizing its applications in a wide array of past and ongoing studies. These studies are summarized under four representative groups: (i) forest sector outlook studies; (ii) studies evaluating the consequences of tariff and non-tariff barriers on the international trade of forest products; (iii) studies projecting the impacts of climate change and forest-based climate change mitigation strategies on forests and forest industries; and (iv) other studies dealing with other important questions, such as the effects of the rise in global planted forest area, illegal harvests, and invasive species. Some of the limitations of GFPM, ways to mitigate these limitations, and its overall usefulness as a forest sector policy analysis tool are also examined.

Resumen
Abstract In this paper, a generalized finite element method (GFEM) with local gradient smoothed approximation (LGS-GFEM) using triangular meshes is proposed. The displacement field function of LGS-GFEM consists of the finite element shape function and the node displacement function. In order to obtain the nodal displacement function, the second order Taylor expansion is considered. The derivative term in Taylor expansion is obtained by using gradient smoothed technique in a smoothed domain. The displacement in smoothed operation is interpolated by polynomial basis function and radial basis fun

The least-squares finite element method (LSFEM), which is based on minimizing the l2-norm of the residual, has many attractive advantages over Galerkin finite element method (GFEM). It is now well established as a proper approach to deal with the convection dominated fluid dynamic equations. The least-squares finite element method has a number of attractive characteristics such as the lack of an inf-sup condition and the resulting symmetric positive system of algebraic equations unlike GFEM. However, the higher continuity requirements for second-order terms in the governing equations force the
