Resumen
An alternative variant of the family tree of the Kartvelian languages, different from the G. Deeters’ one, has recently again appeared in the Kartvelian comparative-historical linguistics. According to the alternative genealogical tree, Svan-Zan language unity and Georgian (as an independent language) were formed at the first stage of the divergence of Common-Kartvelian. At the following stage Svan-Zan language unity differentiated into Svan and Zan languages. The Deeters’s scheme, the kartvelologists have actually become aware of due to T. Gamkrelidze and G. This study aims to determine the language kinship in Wooi, Poom, Ansus, and Ambai languages. Data were collected from an interview with the indigenous speakers of Wooi, Poom, Ansus, and Ambai languages. This research employed a historical-comparative linguistics approach, which is the lexicostatistics and glottochronology method. Data were in the form of 200 basic vocabularies and were calculated with lexicostatistics and glottochronology formula. These research findings indicate the 64% language kinship between Wooi and Ansus. That result is the highest percentage of language kinship between

Resumen
A new method of “dating” language changes was proposed in the 1950s by Morris Swadesh (1952, 1955), who examined changes in the basic vocabulary of a language and postulated that the 1000-year retention rate represents 86% of the vocabulary; in other words, 14 words from a 100-word list must be replaced. An attempt to calculate the split between Goidelic and Brittonic based on this approach was made in Greene (1964) and later in a fundamental study by Elsie (1979) containing, unfortunately, some inaccuracies. In Blažek and Novotná (2006) this split between Goidelic and Brittonic is dated to ca

Interest in explaining scientifically the enormous territorial expansion of the Tupi has been an issue since 1838, now with a consensus: a common centre of origin existed, from which the Tupi fanned out, differentiating through distinct historic and cultural processes whilst keeping several common cultural features. But there is no consensus as to where the centre was located and where passed the routes of expansion.Scholars have often asserted this hypothesis, but contributed very little scientific proof. In a series of seminal articles, Swadesh (1951, 1955) and Lees (1953) developed the theories of lexicostatistics and glottochronology, and detailed the methods for their application. There followed a spate of enthusiastic studies to test and refine those methods, discussed by Hymes (1960) in his lengthy evaluation of the progress of lexicostatistical theory. At that time, Hymes deemed the glottochronological method a potentially useful tool for the dating of language splits, and called for its further refinement. Yet, since Bergsland and Vogt's (1962) scathing and cogent critique of the method

Abstract This book analyses linguistic features typical of early Greek hexameter poetry and assesses how chronology, dialect, and/or style influences their distribution across the different authors and texts (Homer, Hesiod, and the Homeric Hymns). An introduction establishes the methodologies employed throughout the book. In Part 1, the book focusses primarily on thematic genitives, digamma (alongside resonant lengthening), thematic datives, and tmesis. Subsequently, each chapter discusses factors specific to each linguistic feature which could be determining how they are used across the texts

Abstract This chapter provides a general overview of the Omotic language cluster, which has around 30 languages within it. Most of the Omotic languages are spoken and recorded in southwest Ethiopia, and are divided into Central Omotic and Peripheral Omotic. Moreover, Central Omotic is recognized as a genetic group. The chapter discusses the hypotheses for the affiliation of Cushitic, Cushomotic, non(Cushitic, non-Erythraean, and non-Afroasiatic languages. It covers the debates on the methods of classifying Omotic languages, including Greenberg’s mass comparison and Morris Swadesh’s lexicostati

Abstract The concluding chapter ties together all the threads of all the preceding chapters. It argues that there are a great many factors in understanding the distribution of the artificial language of the corpus. Chronology is almost certainly an operant factor, but there are so many complications (both ‘external’, i.e. dialect and stylistic and ‘internal’, i.e. formulae and meter) that it is extremely difficult to draw meaningful chronological conclusions about the texts, and therefore that glottochronology is extremely difficult for early Greek hexameter poetry. It is also argued that styl
