This dissertation aims at examing Jane Campion's “The Piano” as one of the few films directed by a woman to achieve critical and financial success. It will demonstrate that the film is inspired by Gothic Romantic writing in the tradition of the Bröntes and explore the relationship between fetishism and love. Chapter 1 introduces Jane Campion and her oeuvre, providing an overview of “The Piano”. Chapter 2 looks at the Gothic tradition and discusses the Gothic romance on screen. Chapter 3 returns to Jane Campion's “The Piano” exploring Gothic and Romantic elements of the film.

In my thesis I will discuss Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” in relation to the expectations that scholars have of the gothic genre. I will break this project into four chapters, along with an introduction: (Ch.1) a critical review of scholarship on Poe’s “Usher” that will demonstrate the difficulty in coming to a critical consensus on the tale, (Ch.2) a discussion of Brown’s outline of Gothic conventions, (Ch.3) a look at Poe’s “The Philosophy of Composition” juxtaposed with Aristotle’s Poetics to illumine aspects of Poe’s approach to writing and how it has been informed, and (Ch.4) a close reading of Poe’s “Usher.”

Within Gothic literature, the mother is frequently missing. In Charles Brockden Brown’s Edgar Huntly, Edgar Allan Poe’s “Morella,” “Ligeia,” and “Eleonora,” and Edith Wharton’s “Bewitched,” men are left without parents, and they attempt to recuperate a mother-figure. To do so, the men in these texts psychologically project the role of their mother onto other women. Wives, sisters, and daughters all have the potential to become mothers to these men. This is a catastrophe for the women involved, for male perception fails to distinguish females as autonomous, unique beings. By conflating roles in the family structure, men destroy women and thus are left without the nurturing mother-figure – or indeed any female – they desperately need.

The Woman in White (1859 60), de Wilkie Collins, foi a obra inaugural do subgênero vitoriano conhecido como romance de sensação, isto é, narrativas permeadas por crimes como bigamia e identidades falsas, ambientadas em lares ingleses que, à primeira vista, parecem estar acima de suspeitas, e que introduziam novos segredos e reviravoltas a cada página para prender a atenção do leitor. Feito um panorama das condições materiais que possibilitaram o surgimento desse subgênero, postula-se que o protagonista do romance de Collins, Walter Hartright, edita os relatos dos outros narradores, estruturando a narrativa com mecanismos emprestados do romanesco e do Gótico, apresentando as evidências como se o fizesse a um tribunal e organizando os testemunhos da forma que melhor lhe convém, para assim legitimar sua ascensão social.<br>The Woman in White (1859-60), by Wilkie Collins, was the inaugural piece of the Victorian subgenre known as the sensation novel, that is, narratives pervaded by crimes as bigamy and fake identities, set in English homes that, at first sight, seem to be above suspicion, and that introduced new secrets and plot twists at every page to hold the readers attention. Following an overview of the material conditions that enabled this subgenre to emerge, I argue that the protagonist in Collinss novel, Walter Hartright, edits other narrators accounts by structuring the narrative with procedures borrowed from romance and from the Gothic, by producing evidence as if in a Court of Justice, and by assembling the testimonials in the way that best suits his interests in order to legitimize his social ascension.

Neste trabalho, desenvolvemos uma reflexão sobre uma das principais obras do romance gótico e da prosa de ficção romântica em língua inglesa Melmoth the Wanderer (1820), do clérigo dublinense Charles Robert Maturin (1782-1824). Buscamos analisar Melmoth como um sermão gótico irlandês, isto é, um híbrido de romance gótico e sermão sacro, cuja forma é estruturada pelo contexto sócio-histórico da Irlanda do início do século XIX, época caracterizada pelo acirramento das tensões entre católicos e protestantes. Nessa análise, consideramos também a produção sermonística e ensaística do autor. A religião, que se mostra o princípio organizador do romance, foi entendida em sua natureza dialética entre o eterno, as doutrinas teológicas e suas proposições transcendentais, e o temporal, a práxis dos fiéis no mundo. Demonstramos como o escritor-reverendo utiliza uma série de procedimentos retórico-argumentativos da oratória sagrada na tessitura do romance a fim de amplificar o seu grau persuasivo, transformando-o em arma de propaganda política contra a campanha pela Emancipação Católica. Discutimos ainda a fortuna crítica e a recepção do romance em vários países europeus, em especial na França, onde influenciou sobremaneira escritores como Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo e Charles Baudelaire.<br>This study looks at one of the masterpieces of the Gothic novel and the Romantic prose fiction in the English language: Melmoth the Wanderer (1820), written by the Dubliner cleric Charles Robert Maturin (1782-1824). One tries to analyze Melmoth as an Irish Gothic sermon, ie, a hybrid of gothic novel and sermon whose shape is structured by the sociohistorical context of 19th century Ireland, a period characterized by the deepening of tensions between Catholics and Protestants. This analysis also takes into account Maturin´s sermons and essays. Religion, which is the organizing principle of the novel, is understood in this study by its dialectic between the eternal (theological doctrines and their transcendental propositions), and the temporal (the practice of the faithful in the world).The study argues that the writer-cleric uses a series of rhetorical-argumentative procedures of sacred oratory in the making of the novel in order to increase its persuasive appeal, turning it into a weapon of political propaganda against the campaign for Catholic emancipation. It also assesses the novel´s reviews and reactions in several European countries, particularly in France, where it greatly influenced writers such as Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, and Charles Baudelaire.

El propósito de esta disertación doctoral es lo de investigar y comprender de mejor manera las influencias múltiples que, juntas al desarrollo y a la divulgación de la traducción literaria (puestas de relieve por Stuart Gillespie y David Hopkins), tuvieron un papel importante en el ascenso de las primeras novelas góticas al final del siglo dieciocho. Considerando que este trabajo está profundamente influenciado e inspirado por la crítica literaria reconocida a nivel internacional sobre la literatura gótica, esta investigación evita asumir perspectivas criticas típicas del siglo veinte y del periodo actual. Procediendo atrás en el tiempo, examina los autores, su ambiente cultural, sus conocimientos y sus puntos de vista que pertenecen al siglo dieciocho. El enfoque se concentra sobre las primeras manifestaciones del género gótico en las décadas inmediatamente sucesivas a la novedad introducida por Horace Walpole con su novela fantástica El Castillo de Otranto en 1764. El periodo fin de siècle limitado (1786-1796) de los primeros trabajos góticos que se explora en esta tesis es inversamente proporcional al ancho nivel de creatividad e invención de sus autores. Esta disertación tiene como objetivo lo de demonstrar que la omnipresencia y la reiteración de temas y argumentos clásicos, medievales y renacentistas fueron elegidos y adaptados a sus historias conscientemente por William Beckford (Vathek, 1786), Ann Radcliffe (El Romance de la Selva, 1791), y Matthew G. Lewis (El Monje, 1796), cuyas novelas representan un sincretismo único y original de ideas e influencias literarias, culturales e iconográficas que los tres autores absorbieron de sus contemporáneos así como de los escritores y poetas del pasado. Las tres novelas analizadas en esta tesis fueron escritas antes, durante y después de la revolución francesa que ha sido frecuentemente considerada como un punto de referencia y el origen de la literatura gótica. Una de las ideas detrás de esta disertación es la intención de demonstrar que las conexiones con la revolución en Francia son una convención crítica a quo, que generalmente no toma en consideración peculiaridades del gótico literario que existían antes de los acontecimientos revolucionarios. Otros aspectos importantes incluidos en esta investigación son la función de las arquitecturas, los paisajes y las iconografías de las novelas. La disertación está dividida en cinco partes. La primera introduce los argumentos and la razón de ser a la base de esta investigación junto a la motivación de organizar un estudio sobre el gótico que recibe mucha atención crítica. El cuerpo central es formado por tres capítulos. Cada uno contiene un análisis de una novela diferente y pone en evidencia su relación con autores como Lucrecio, Virgilio, Ovidio, Dante, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, y otros. El quinto capítulo incluye la conclusión y las hipótesis de investigaciones futuras que pueden desarrollarse de este estudio. Una particularidad de la bibliografía es que presenta una variedad de textos y traducciones que eran conocidos por los autores examinados en esta disertación. El idioma de los novelistas góticos reflejaba inevitablemente los estilos de los autores del pasado. Un anexo iconográfico al final de la disertación presenta una galería de pinturas e imágenes que muestran una analogía relevante con la belleza, el misterio y el terror del gótico.<br>The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate and better understand the multiple influences that, together with the development and spreading of literary translations (highlighted by Stuart Gillespie and David Hopkins), played an important role in the rise of the early Gothic novel at the end of the eighteenth century. While deeply inspired by and imbued with internationally recognised critical literature of the Gothic, this study avoids assuming the critical stances of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It proceeds backward in time, scrutinizing the authors, their cultural background, their knowledge, and their eighteenth-century perspectives. The focus is concentrated on the first manifestations of the Gothic genre in the decades that followed the novelty introduced by Horace Walpole with The Castle of Otranto in 1764. The restricted fin de siècle timespan (1786-1796) of the early Gothic works that is explored in this thesis is inversely proportional to the high level of creativity and inventiveness of their authors. This dissertation aims at demonstrating that the pervasiveness and reiteration of Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance themes were consciously chosen and adapted to their plots by William Beckford (Vathek, 1786), Ann Radcliffe (The Romance of the Forest, 1791), and Matthew G. Lewis (The Monk, 1796), whose novels were an interesting and unusual syncretism of literary, cultural, and iconographic ideas and resources that they absorbed both from their contemporaries and, most importantly, from authors of the past. The three novels analysed in this thesis were written before, during, and after the French Revolution, which has been taken by many as a point of reference for and as a cause of the Gothic. The aim of this study is also to demonstrate that the association with the French Revolution is a critical convention a quo, which does not take into consideration Gothic peculiarities that already existed before the dramatic events in France. Other important aspects included in this investigation are the function of architectures, landscapes and iconographies in the novels. The dissertation is divided into five parts. The first part introduces the major themes and the rationale behind this investigation together with the motivation for embarking on a study on the Gothic. The central body is represented by three chapters. Every chapter analyses one novel and underscores its connection with authors such as Lucretius, Virgil, Ovid, Dante, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and many others. The fifth chapter contains the conclusion and the future hypotheses of investigation brought about by this research. The bibliography features a variety of source texts and translations that were known to the novelists examined in this dissertation. The three Gothic writers’ language inevitably reflected and echoed themes and styles inherited from authors of different epochs. An iconography annex introduces a series of paintings and images that showed relevant associations with Gothic beauty, mystery, and horror.

Duas coletâneas das novelas Noites em uma granja perto de Dikanka, de Nikolai Gógol (1809-1852), publicadas entre 1831 e 1832 e chamadas pelos pesquisadores de ucranianas, formaram o primeiro livro que trouxe o então jovem escritor à fama na sociedade literária russa. A obra, além de apresentar ao público o ainda pouco conhecido material etnográfico, ganhou destaque por formar uma complexa síntese das várias camadas literárias e culturais, colocando Noites dentro do sistema de várias oposições (romantismo/realismo; cristianismo/paganismo; catolicismo/ortodoxia, russo/europeu), sujeito à discussão até nossos dias. Nesta dissertação, discute-se a possível conexão das obras de Nikolai Gógol, em especial as suas novelas ucranianas, com a poética do romance gótico inglês, gênero popular e difundido na Rússia no início do século XIX. Tal circunstância proporcionou o vasto uso e adaptação dos procedimentos típicos góticos pelos autores russos na época gogoliana. Para mostrar isso, são procurados e analisados os traços recorrentes do gênero em questão, que mostram a evolução e a transformação do gótico em um novo território e na poética de Gógol em particular. Compõe, ainda, o volume desta dissertação a tradução de duas novelas gogolianas A noite da véspera do dia de Ivan Kupala (Vêtcher nakanune Ivana Kupala) e Uma noite de maio, ou uma moça afogada (Máiskaia notch, ili utóplennitsa). O critério de seleção dos textos em questão foi a presença marcante dos traços da tradição gótica.<br>Two collections of tales Evenings on a farm near Dikanka, by Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852), published between 1831 and 1832 and named by the researchers Ukrainian, formed the first book that brought a then young writer to fame in the Russian literary society. The work, aside from introducing to the public the yet little known ethnographic material, was highlighted for forming a complex synthesis of different cultural and literary layers, putting the Evenings into a system of various oppositions (romanticism/realism, Christianity/paganism, catholicism/orthodoxy, Russian/European), subject to a discussion until nowadays. This dissertation discusses a possible connection of Gogols works, especially his Ukrainian tales, with the poetics of English gothic romance, a popular and diffused genre in Russia in the beginning of the XIXth century. That circumstance conditioned the widespread use and adaptation of typical Gothic devices by the Russian authors during the gogolian era. To prove that, our work researches and analyses the recurrent traces of the genre in question, that show the evolution and transformation of Gothic in the new territory in general and in Gogols poetics in particular. This dissertation also presents the translation into Portuguese of two Gogols tales St. Johns Eve (Vecher nakanune Ivana Kupala) and May Night, or The Drowned Maiden (Mayskaya noch, ili Utoplennitsa). The selection criteria was the most outstanding presence of the Gothic traces in these texts.

Vathek, primeiro romance do escritor inglês William Beckford publicado em 1786, é considerado por muitos uma obra singular. Combinando certos elementos dos chamados romances góticos com uma ambientação oriental, a narrativa coloca diversos problemas a respeito de sua complexa natureza estilística. Muitos estudiosos já tentaram associar a obra a alguma dessas tradições de forma definitiva. Neste trabalho, realizaremos uma nova leitura do romance para, então, confrontarmos nossos achados com a fortuna crítica. O intuito desse procedimento é o de verificar se, diante das questões suscitadas pela própria obra, termos como gótico ou orientalista podem descrever Vathek de maneira precisa.<br>Vathek, English writer William Beckfords first novel published in 1786, is considered by many a singular work. By combining certain elements of the so-called gothic novels with an Oriental setting, it poses many problems deriving from its complex stylistic nature. Several critics have already tried to conclusively link the work to some of the aforementioned traditions. The aim of our work is to propose a new reading of the novel and compare our findings with previous critical assessments. The reason behind this procedure is to verify if terms like gothic or orientalist can still precisely describe Vathek when confronted with problems evoked by the work itself.

Buscamos analisar alguns aspectos peculiares dessa obra, enfatizando-se dentre eles seu modo de narração, que combina aspectos assustadores do romance gótico com elementos da estética realista do século XIX. Também são objetos de estudo desta pesquisa o que chamamos de “espacialidade gótica”, que se evidencia nas descrições do cenário principal - Wuthering Heights, a antiga e sinistra casa que também dá o título ao romance -, e os temas e motivos do gênero gótico que foram revistos por Emily Brontë, tais como o duplo, o qual é amplamente explorado em textos com inspiração gótica, a exemplo de Manfred, poema dramático de Byron. Por fim, realizamos a análise das características do casal de protagonistas do romance, Catherine e Heathcliff, visando apontar um diálogo intertextual do livro de Brontë com obras do gênero gótico ou inseridas na tradição literária inglesa, tais como Paraíso perdido, de John Milton.<br>The corpus of this research is Wuthering Heights, the only novel written by the English writer Emily Brontë that since its first publication in 1847 has generated contradictory reactions that oscillate between fascination and repulsion among readers. We analyse some peculiar aspects of this work, emphasizing among them, its mode of narration that combines frightening aspects of Gothic novel with elements of realistic aesthetics of the nineteenth century. They are also objects of this study, which we call "Gothic spatiality" that stands out in the description of its main scenario - Wuthering Heights, the old and sinister house that provides the title of the novel -, and the themes and motifs of the Gothic genre that were reviewed by Emily Brontë, such as the double, which is widely exploited in texts with Gothic inspiration, such as Manfred, dramatic poem of Byron. Finally we analyse the couple of protagonists in the novel, Catherine and Heathcliff, seeking to appoint an intertextual dialogue between Brontë’s book with works of Gothic genre or inserted in the English literary tradition, such as Paradise Lost, by John Milton.<br>FAPESP: 2012/08393-9

“Judging the Rational and the Dead: Ann Radcliffe and Feminist Theology” argues Radcliffe’s first three novels, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), A Sicilian Romance (1790), and The Romance of the Forest (1791), show a progression of feminist theology informed by the late eighteenth-century British religious movement of Rational Dissent. The thesis attempts to complicate and extend Radcliffe scholarship by moving away from fractured critical discourses and into more cohesive readings of Radcliffe that include feminist and theological interpretations of her work. Of particular interest to the project are Radcliffe’s views on the circumscribed nature of women’s existence within British notions of church and state. The thesis does more than attempt to note Radcliffe’s objections to the circumscribed nature of women in British society; it also seeks to explore the potential solutions offered by a feminist theology that rejects establishment religious hierarchies in favor of a more Unitarian system.

Folklore, surnaturel et réalité, la formulation peut surprendre, mais la confrontation est féconde. Si le lien entre le folklore et le surnaturel semble, pour une part, évident dans le roman populaire de la postérité gothique au début du XIXe siècle, le franchissement des frontières du réel et de l’irréel couramment admises à propos de l'écriture du fantastique ou du merveilleux, invite à reconsidérer ces registres dans leur rapport au vraisemblable. Comment le folklore surnaturel peut-il avoir quelque chose à dire du réel et donc, de l’Histoire humaine ?La perspective comparatiste qui domine l’étude de quelques romans populaires français et tchèques, caractéristiques du romantisme noir, éclaire le fonctionnement des motifs folkloriques à l’intérieur des trames romanesques. Au-delà des fonctions ornementales et divertissantes qui lui sont ordinairement attribuées, la trace du folklore cristallise les tensions inhérentes aux intrications de la construction imaginaire et du réel. Support de l’inspiration auctoriale et de son originalité, la présence continue du folklore dans ces ouvrages qui relèvent du surnaturel, conduit à une réévaluation du cadre générique lié à la sur-nature et à la reconsidération de la relation de ces romans à l’historicité. Ces œuvres dites populaires, à destination d'un public dont on prétend qu'il ne l'est pas moins ont aussi à dire un présent à leurs contemporains. The link between folklore and the supernatural seems, in part, evident in the popular novel of Gothic romance posterity at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Therefore, crossing the borders of the real and the unreal, commonly accepted in fictitious writing included supernatural, invites us to reconsider the category of the fantastic, and its vocation to entertain, in their relation to the vraisemblance. How may the supernatural folklore have something to say about the real and therefore, about human history?The comparative perspective that dominates the study of some popular French and Czech romances, which are inherited of the Gothic romances, emphasizes the functioning of folkloric motifs within the fictional frameworks. Beyond the ornamental and entertaining functions that are usually attributed to them, they crystallize the tensions that exist between the fictional construction and reality. Supporting the authors’ inspirations and their originality, the continuous presence of folklore in these narratives, leads to a reassessment of the generic framework related to the supernatural and reconsideration of the relationship of these fictions to the historicity. These so-called popular works, destined for a public which is claimed to be no less so, also illustrates contemporaneous time. Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul<br>In the late eighteenth century, Ann Radcliffe established herself as one of the most famous novelists of her time, and she reached the peak of her career with her fourth novel entitled The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). Although it is one of the most important gothic novels, this narrative has issues not much explored by critics yet. The Mysteries of Udolpho presents us with one of the strongest characteristics of Radcliffe s fiction, namely, the detailed construction of setting. In this sense, this work analyses and discusses the roles of setting, which is organized in the novel as natural or constructed setting. The analysis focuses on the relation between this thematic-formal aspect and the actions and personal relationships of the protagonist Emily with other characters. The discussion shows that the different types of setting are essential in the narrative once they have strong participation in the ideological construction of characters regarding the connection between sentimentalism and rationality. Therefore, the relation between setting and characters, in this particular novel, expresses important aspects of the complex development of the bourgeois sensibility in eighteenth-century England.<br>Em fins do século XVIII, Ann Radcliffe se estabeleceu como uma das romancistas mais famosas de sua época, atingindo o ápice de sua carreira com seu quarto romance intitulado The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). Apesar de ser um dos romances góticos ingleses mais importantes, ele ainda apresenta questões pouco exploradas pelos críticos. The Mysteries of Udolpho possui uma das características mais fortes das obras de Radcliffe: a minuciosa elaboração do espaço. Em vista disso, este estudo analisa e discute as funções do espaço, o qual está organizado em natural e construído. A análise centra na maneira como esse aspecto temático-estrutural se relaciona com as ações e relações pessoais da protagonista Emily com as demais personagens. Discutimos como os diferentes tipos de espaço tornam-se essenciais por participarem de forma enfática na construção ideológica das personagens, no que diz respeito à associação entre sentimentalismo e racionalidade. Assim, a relação entre espaço e personagens nesse romance expressa aspectos importantes da complexa construção da sensibilidade burguesa na Inglaterra do século XVIII.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>A tese se insere nos estudos sobre o gótico literário. Seu objetivo principal é mostrar o lar como lugar crucial para o desenvolvimento das temáticas caras ao gênero, destacando o corpo feminino como pivô. Na primeira parte, foram analisados estudos teóricos sobre o romance inglês, apontando para uma possível mudança na maneira como o gótico vem sendo tratado. Na segunda parte, obras ficcionais importantes para a discussão do lar e do corpo feminino dentro da tradição gótica foram analisadas, promovendo a articulação de tais obras com as diretrizes teóricas pertinentes. Finalmente, a terceira e última parte terá os romances Ciranda de Pedra, Daughters of the House e Lady Oracle como foco, a fim de apontar o modo como a narrativa gótica contemporânea assimilou as questões tratadas anteriormente<br>The present work is a study about the literary Gothic. Its main objective is to show the house as a crucial place for the development of themes related to the Gothic, highlighting the female body as a central figure. In the first part, theoretical studies related to the English novel are analyzed and a possible shift in the way the Gothic is dealt with is described. In the second part, relevant fictional works for the discussion of the house and of the female body in the Gothic tradition are analyzed in dialogue with pertinent theoretical ideas. Finally, the third and last part brings forth the novels Ciranda de Pedra, Daughters of the House and Lady Oracle in order to show how contemporary Gothic fiction deals with the issues previously discussed

In this paper, I study the bodies in Mare Kandre’s two novels Bestiarium (1999) and Xavier (2002), with the help of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the grotesque. I examine the worldview that is portrayed in the novels – focusing on the attitude towards death – and seek answers to the following questions: how do the human bodies look and how do they relate to their surroundings? What does the way they are portrayed say about the world the novels portray? And what role does laughter play in the novels? I also examine the similarity between a grotesque body, and a gothic monster. As a result, I find that one body may exist both in life and death at the same time, that the bodies can merge together, and that the boundaries between body and world may be exceeded. I also find the grotesque abilities of the body not to be threatening, but filled with possibilities. Here, even monsters are not harmful.<br>I den här uppsatsen undersöker jag kropparna i Mare Kandres två romaner Bestiarium (1999) och Xavier (2002), med utgångspunkt i Michail Bachtins teorier om det groteska. Jag söker svar på hur hans begrepp kan öka förståelsen för den värld som målas upp i romanerna, med ett fokus på inställningen till döden. Jag ställer mig frågor om hur de mänskliga kropparna ser ut och hur de förhåller sig till resten av världen, vad sättet de gestaltas på säger om romanvärlden och vilken roll skrattet spelar i romanerna. Jag undersöker också likheten mellan groteska kroppar och gotiska monster. I min analys visar jag att kropparna i Mare Kandres romaner kan befinna sig både i livet och döden samtidigt, att de ständigt är i rörelse och kan uppgå i varandra. Dessutom kan gränsen mellan kropp och värld upplösas. Jag visar också på att den glädje som kännetecknade medeltidens grotesk bara kan förnimmas, men att de groteska kropparna trots det besitter positiva möjligheter. Inte ens monster måste här besegras, då de inte utgör något hot.

Die Magisterarbeit „Romanischer und gotischer Sakralbau in Frankreich am Beispiel der Abteikirche von Saint-Denis“ beschäftigt sich mit den Gründen für den im 12. Jahrhundert stattfindenden Baustilwandel, wie und warum er sich ausgerechnet zuerst an der kleinen Abteikirche im Pariser Umland vollzog und welche Rolle dem dortigen Abt Suger zukam. Zunächst werden grundlegende Fakten und Beispiele zum mittelalterlichen Sakralbau in Frankreich vermittelt, anschließend die beiden aufeinanderfolgenden Epochen Romanik und Gotik temporal, territorial und vor allem architektonisch eingeordnet und beschrieben. Den Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet die kritische Analyse der Abteikirche von Saint-Denis, wobei sowohl architektur-stilistische als auch (kirchen-)politische Aspekte einer eingehenden Betrachtung unterzogen werden. Zum besseren Verständnis ist der Arbeit ein Glossar architektonischer Fachbegriffe beigefügt.<br>This paper deals with the wherefores of the architectural style transition from the Romanesque age to the Gothic era in the 12th century in Europe, especially in France. The author points out why one can say that the Gothic style starts in the small abbey church Saint Denis, situated in the environs of Paris, and which role is assigned to its abbot Suger. First, sample churches illustrate basic facts about medievial sacred architecture in France. Following this, the paper classifies the Romanesque and Gothic period in a temporal as well as territorial and architectural way. The paper’s focus is on a critical analysis of the abbey church Saint Denis which reviews thoroughly both architectural-stylistic and ecclesio-political aspects at that time. For a better understanding, a glossary of architectural technical terms is attached.

La bit lit, un genre littéraire très contemporain qui associe le récit amoureux et le récit vampirique et s'adresse principalement à un public adolescent féminin, a acquis une visibilité mondiale avec la parution de Twilight de Stephenie Meyer en 2005. Ce mouvement littéraire reprend l'un des thèmes les plus récurrents et centraux des histoires d'amour comme des histoires de vampires occidentales : la construction du féminin, la position attribuée à ce dernier, et ses interactions avec un univers majoritairement hostile et dangereux. Or, malgré des représentations très conservatrices, voire rétrogrades, le genre connaît un succès très important en particulier auprès des jeunes femmes. Il est donc indispensable de s'interroger sur cette apparente contradiction, qui amène des auteures exclusivement de sexe féminin et un lectorat très majoritairement féminin à écrire et lire des récits sentimentaux peu féministes. Pour ce faire, la présente étude se penche sur trois oeuvres de bit lit : Twilight de Stephenie Meyer, The Vampire Diaries de L. J. Smith et House of Night de P. C. et Kristin Cast. Elle s'appuie sur trois approches, les études culturelles et l'étude de la réception, la narratologie, puis les études de genre. Les influences littéraires qui nourrissent les romans, le mode de lecture qu'ils encouragent et les choix narratifs qu'ils déploient sont analysés afin de comprendre ce qu'ils mettent en scène : la rencontre entre le sujet féminin et une conception patriarcale du monde<br>Supernatural romance (or 'bit lit' in French) is a contemporary literary genre which associates sen-timental and vampiric stories and is primarily aimed at a female teenage audience. It acquired global visibility in 2005 with the publication of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. This literary movement takes up one of the most recurring and central themes of Western love stories and vampire stories alike: the construction of the feminine, of its positioning and its interactions with an essentially hos-tile and dangerous environment. Despite very conservative and even reactionary representations, the genre has met a huge success among young women. It is thus necessary to question this ap-parent contradiction: why do exclusively female writers and mostly female readers write and read sentimental stories that can be qualified at best as 'hardly feminist'? To do so, the current study focuses on three supernatural romance series: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith and House of Night by P. C. and Kristin Cast. It relies on three approaches: cultural and reception studies, narratology and gender studies. The literary influences that inform the nov-els, the reading mode they incite and the narrative choices they unfold are analyzed in order to understand how they stage the encounter between the feminine subject and a patriarchal worldview

Em primeiro lugar, desejamos delimitar quais elementos e temas são explorados pelos textos que nos permitem compará-los com os romances pertencentes à literatura noir dos séculos XVIII e XIX. Por fim, prevemos a aproximação de ambos os romances, de maneira que possamos compreender as razões da vingança de cada um dos agentes, os instrumentos utilizados, o modo de execução do plano e, por fim, as consequências do ataque levado a cabo. A aproximação proposta, além de confirmar que os textos podem ser lidos como obras góticas, indica-nos conclusões de ordem filosófica a respeito do tema em estudo (vingança)<br>Abstract: The literary works Crônica da casa assassinada and Wuthering Heights - respectively written by Lúcio Cardoso (1912-1968) and Emily Brontë (1818-1848) - can be read as texts that explore elements from the literary gothic aesthetics as well as a plot that animates itself through the revenge plan executed by their protagonists Nina and Heathcliff. In the first place, we want to delineate the elements and themes that are explored in the texts and that allow us to compare them to the novels that belong to the 18th and 19th centuries literature noir. In conclusion, we foresee an approximative reading of both novels in order to understand the reasons of the revenge of each protagonist, the instruments used, how the plan was executed and, finally, the consequences of the attack. In this essay, I make a queer feminist analysis of four novels written by the Swedish author Sigge Stark. The novels are: Uggleboet, Manhatareklubben, Cirkus Demonio och Baskerflickan. Using Judith Butler's theories I examine the relations between sex/gender and sexuality in the four books and show how the construction of gender is performed and the heterosexual normativity is jeopardized. I also examine whether, and if so how, Sigge Stark uses the romantic and the gothic genres to include transcending gender identities and sexualities in her work. The essay also includes a contextualisation of her prerequisities as an author and the necessity in performing a critical analysis of mass produced romantic literature.

In effetti, il fenomeno di conversione è ben più complesso e si svolge tra il III e il V secolo, intrecciandosi continuamente con le relazioni politiche e diplomatiche tra Romani e Goti. Ferrara cathedral in the Middle Age: building phases and iconographical problems. The present investigation analyzes the different building phases of Ferrara cathedral during the Middle Age, trying to understand the evolution of a very large and extremely complex yard. Nowadays only the perimetrical walls belong to the medieval period, because of the remaking suffered during the centuries. The work starts from a careful, critical revision of the existing literature and the preserved sources, by a widespread research in the archives of Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna, Florence, Rome and Vatican City. Then, the possibility to get to scaffolding organized to remake the roofs of the aisles, in 2007 and 2008, and to study the 3D surveys of Ferrara University and the photogrammetries of Ravenna Superintendence has allowed to raise new problems and try to find new solutions. On the base of careful inspections and on-the-spot investigations, it has been possible to formulate new hypothesis, suggesting a different articulation of the building phases and participation of workforces. From the starting of the construction under bishop Landolfo in 1135 (when Nicholaus’ workshop also participated) to a new definition of the campionese phase, the whole sculptural material has been reexamined to elaborate some original proposal. The figure of the Months master has been reconsidered too, focusing better his possible training in the French yards and his plausible presence in Vercelli. With regard to the Months reliefs, a new proposal for their collocation has been advanced, especially for the Zodiacal signs slabs. The individuation of the French workshop, that deals with another building phase and with the realization of the upper part of the façade porch, permits to connect Ferrara and the Ile-de-France cathedrals. Thanks to the pictures taken during the conservative intervention directed by Ottorino Nonfarmale, it has been possible to understand that the Last Judgment of the porch was originally composed in a different way. A further building phase has been picked out in the upper gallery of the southern flank, until ending with the façade completion, that probably continued until the first half of the XIV century, with influences coming from the English gothic. With regards to the inner space of the building, divided in five aisles with a false transept, even completely lost nowadays because of a XVIII century restoration, I tried to recompose it ideally, comparing the old drawings and engravings, realized before the transformations, with all the useful passages found in the sources. For this reason, in the appendix some unpublished documents have been collected, to shed more light on the ancient facies of the cathedral. In the light of what has emerged, a global image of great interest has appeared: this cathedral, similar for its size to the big early Christian churches, absorbed and elaborated not only the northern Italy architectural traditions, but it was also the product of an intricate crossing of European exchanges, suggestions and influences that made it unique in the contemporary building survey of our peninsula<br>La cattedrale di Ferrara in epoca medievale: fasi costruttive e problemi iconografici Questo studio analizza le diverse fasi costruttive della cattedrale di Ferrara in epoca medievale, per cercare di comprendere l’evoluzione di un cantiere estremamente complesso e di vaste dimensioni. Dell’età di mezzo oggi si conservano nell’edificio solo le murature esterne, in seguito ai rifacimenti subiti nel corso dei secoli. Il lavoro ha preso le mosse da un’attenta revisione critica della letteratura esistente e delle fonti conservate, attraverso una capillare ricerca negli archivi di Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna, Firenze, Roma, Città del Vaticano. In seguito, la possibilità di accedere ai ponteggi per il rifacimento dei coperti delle navate laterali, tra il 2007 e il 2008, e di studiare i rilievi a scanner 3D dell’Università di Ferrara e le fotogrammetrie della Soprintendenza di Ravenna ha consentito di sollevare nuove problematiche alle quali si è cercato, in queste pagine, di dare delle risposte esaustive. Sulla base di attente ispezioni e di nuovi sopralluoghi, è stato possibile avanzare nuove ipotesi, proponendo una diversa scansione nel susseguirsi delle fasi costruttive e delle maestranze al lavoro. Dall’avvio della fabbrica sotto il vescovo Landolfo nel 1135 (al quale partecipò anche l’officina di Nicholaus) a una nuova ridefinizione della fase campionese, è stato riesaminato tutto il materiale scultoreo e sono state quindi elaborate delle proposte inedite. È stata riconsiderata anche la figura del Maestro dei Mesi, focalizzando meglio la sua possibile formazione nei cantieri francesi e la sua plausibile presenza a Vercelli. Per il ciclo dei Mesi si è avanzata un’inedita proposta di collocazione, in particolare per quanto riguarda le formelle dei segni zodiacali. L’individuazione della maestranza francese, che si è occupata di una fase edificatoria e della realizzazione della parte superiore del protiro della facciata, ha permesso di creare un ponte tra i cantieri dell’Ile-de-France e Ferrara. Grazie alle fotografie del restauro diretto da Ottorino Nonfarmale è stato possibile anche comprendere che il Giudizio universale del protiro in origine era stato pensato in maniera diversa rispetto a come oggi appare. Una fase costruttiva ulteriore è stata poi individuata nella galleria superiore del fianco meridionale, per chiudere infine con il completamento della facciata, che si prolungò probabilmente fino alla prima metà del XIV secolo, con suggestioni provenienti dal gotico inglese. Per quanto riguarda l’articolazione dello spazio interno dell’edificio, in cinque navate con transetto aereo, per quanto oggi completamente perduto a causa di un intervento settecentesco, si é cercato di ricomporlo idealmente, comparando i rilievi e le vedute dell’edificio realizzati prima delle trasformazioni, con tutti i passi utili delle fonti reperiti. In appendice sono infatti raccolti alcuni documenti inediti che gettano nuova luce sull’antica facies dell’edificio. Alla luce di quanto emerso è risultata un’immagine globale di grande interesse: non solo questa cattedrale, che per dimensioni è comparabile alle grandi basiliche paleocristiane, accoglie e rielabora la tradizione architettonica padana, ma si pone al centro di un intricato crocevia di scambi, suggestioni e influssi europei, che la rendono unica nel coevo panorama costruttivo della nostra penisola

Ziel der Arbeit war, das Baugeschehen am Wurzner Dom in der Zeit zwischen seiner Gründung 1114 bis zur äußerlichen Vollendung um 1515 genauer als bisher geschehen kunsthistorisch einzuordnen. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung dafür stellt einerseits die bisherige kunsthistorische Forschung zur Baugeschichte dar, vor allem aber auch die zwischen den Jahren 2010-2014 durchgeführten Bauforschungen am Dom. Diese Bauuntersuchung wurde vom Teilprojekt D des ehemaligen SFBs 804 der TU Dresden, vertreten durch die Verfasserin, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen durchgeführt. Mit Hilfe dieser Grundlagenforschung wurde es möglich, die Baugestalt des Domes von Romanik bis zur Spätgotik weitgehend zu rekonstruieren. Folgende Hypothesen waren in der Dissertation zu erörtern: Welchen Grund- und Aufriss besaß die romanische, die gotische und die spätgotische Kollegiatstiftskirche St. Marien in Wurzen? Welche Reste lassen sich konkret aus den verschiedenen Bauphasen nachweisen? In welchen kunsthistorischen Kontext ordnen sich die Bauphasen ein? Lassen sich über den Betrachtungszeitraum hinweg charakteristische Tendenzen feststellen? Was kann über die mittelalterliche Ausstattung gesagt werden? Was lässt sich zur Lage der Kollegiatstiftsgebäude herausfinden? Der Wurzner Bau bietet sich exemplarisch für eine solche Forschung an, weil er als Kollegiatstiftskirche zwischen den großen Dombauten und den Kloster- und Pfarrkirchen in der Peripherie eine interessante Mittelstellung in der Sakralarchitektur Mitteldeutschlands einnimmt. Die heterogene Baugestalt St. Mariens ist ein Zeugnis des mittelalterlichen Baubetriebs und erlaubt einen Blick auf dessen Strukturen. Der romanische Bau der Kollegiatstiftskirche lässt sich durch seinen rekonstruierten Grundriss in die Reihe frühstädtischer Kirchen einordnen. Man orientierte sich beim Bau in Wurzen weder an den frühen Dombauten noch an dem von Klosterkirchen, die alle eher einen langgestreckten Grundriss aufweisen. Seine schlichte Bauart zeugt von der damals im Meißner Bistum in ihrem Formenrepertoire kaum durchgebildeten Architektursprache. Eine Hauptaufgabe der Meißner Bischöfe bestand in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts darin, dass neukolonialisierte Gebiet, hier an der Westgrenze zum Bistum Merseburg, zu sichern und auszubauen. Um 1200 bietet sich ein völlig anderes Bild; Bauten wie die Klosterkirche in Wechselburg oder der Freiberger Dom werden allgemeingültige architektonische Vorbilder für alle Typen von Sakralbauten. Auch die Mauertechnik wird in dieser Zeit exakter als an den erhaltenen Resten der Wurzner Kirche. Entsprechend zum Grundriss des heutigen Langhauses handelte es sich bei der romanischen Kirche um einen fast quadratischen Bau von 16m x 17m. Die Breite des Langhauses liegt bei 8m, die Arkadenspannweite bei 5m. Die steinerne romanische Kirche war eine Pfeilerbasilika ohne Querhaus und Westturm. Über die Lage und Form der ehemaligen Apsis lassen sich ohne weitere Grabungen nur Vermutungen anstellen. Die kunsthistorische Einordnung der Kirche wird von der Frage nach der Baueinheitlichkeit der beiden Chorflankentürme begleitet. Nach der Bauuntersuchung 2010-2014 und der Auswertung der archäologischen Dokumentationen ist anzunehmen, dass beide Türme im aufgehenden Mauerwerk hochgotischen Ursprungs sind. Es gibt bisher keine Befunde, die das Vorhandensein romanischer Türme belegen. Mit dieser Aussage ist eine Hauptfrage der Bauforschung mit einiger Klarheit beantwortet worden. War der romanische Bau in seinen Maßen und architektonischer Gestalt eher bescheiden, muss er dennoch als ein wichtiges Zeugnis früher romanischer Architektur in Obersachsen in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts angesehen werden. Die bisherige Datierung der romanischen Bauteile der Wurzner Kirche im Zusammenhang mit dem Weihedatum 1114 konnte genauer gefasst werden; sie ist zwischen 1114-1160 anzunehmen. Um einiges detailreicher als der romanische Bau zeigt sich der gotische Neubau des Langchors. Der erhaltene hochgotische Langchor der Wurzner Kollegiatstiftskirche wurde von der Kunstgeschichte bisher völlig übersehen. Sein rekonstruierter Grundriss als langgestreckter, flachgeschlossener Kastenraum mit queroblongen Jochen sowie die Kapitelle, Konsolen und abgekragten Dienste zeigen deutliche Bezüge zu Mendikantenarchitektur und zu derjenigen der Zisterzienser und Zisterzienserinnen. Die Genese des modernen flachgeschlossenen Chores ist für die Einordnung des Wurzner Chores von Bedeutung. Weiterhin konnte ein böhmischer Einfluss auf die Gestaltung der romanisierenden Gliederungsarchitektur nachgewiesen werden. Als charakteristische Teile sind beispielhaft das hohe Gebälk, die auskragenden Deckplatten oder die schildartigen Deckplattenaufbauten zu nennen. Zur Einordnung der Architekturglieder wurde eine vergleichende Übersicht zur hochgotischen Architektur Obersachsens und Böhmens erarbeitet. Die unterschiedliche Herkunft der „Leitbauten“ in beiden Ländern, der bischöflichen Dome in Mitteldeutschland und der von der zentralen Herrschaft des böhmischen Königs beeinflussten Architektur von Klöstern und Burgen in Böhmen, ist für die Erforschung der Verbreitung gotischer Formen wichtig. Für den Wurzner Chor spielt das vor allem hinsichtlich seiner Einordnung in eine größere Gruppe böhmisch beeinflusster Kirchen in Obersachsen und seine Datierung eine Rolle. Bisher wurde der Chor um 1260 datiert. Zum Anhand der böhmischen Vergleichsbeispiele, wie der Burgkapelle von Klingenberg (Zvikov), der böhmisch beeinflussten Vergleichsbauten in Grimma, Zittau und Görlitz sowie durch die Einordnung des Grundrisses innerhalb der Zisterzienserarchitektur und der Bettelorden kann für den Wurzner Langchor eine Bauzeit um 1250 angenommen werden. Dafür spricht auch der enge architektonische Bezug Wurzens zur Klosterkirche Schulpforta, der sich in der Gestaltung der „federnden“ Dreipässe, im Dekor der Kapitelle sowie bei der Form der Ostfenster feststellen lässt. Die Einordnung des Kapitelldekors zeigte, dass man sich in Wurzen bemühte, modernen Strömungen zu folgen, die aber eher allgemein „gotisch“ waren und keinen eindeutigen Leitbau erkennen lassen. Der gotische Bau der Kollegiatstiftskirche war sehr anspruchsvoll geplant. Man muss neben dem erhaltenen Langchor auch weitere nicht zur Ausführung gekommene Planungen für das Schiff bedenken. Die erhaltenen Wölbungsanfänger und die Befunde im Dach weisen auf eine einheitlich geplante, reiche gotische Wölbung der Kirche hin. Für den Bau der gotischen Kirche waren sowohl Kloster- als auch Stadtkirchen vorbildhaft. Mit dem Langchor in Wurzen ist ein wichtiges Bindeglied der frühen gotischen Architektur Obersachsens überliefert. Er steht zeitlich zwischen dem Bau der Klosterkirche in Schulpforta und dem des Meißner Doms. Deutlich wird, dass es neben der „klassischen“ Gotik, die an den großen Bischofs- und der Klosterkirchen der Zisterzienser zu Tage tritt, lokale Spielarten gotischen Bauens gegeben hat. Von Bedeutung ist auch die Erkenntnis, dass in der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts die Architekturströmungen nicht ausschließlich von West nach Ost verliefen, sondern, wie im Falle von Wurzen, Grimma, Zittau und Görlitz dargestellt, auch von Ost nach West. Mit Hilfe der Bauforschung konnte der Querschnitt des Langhauses der gotischen Kirche in zwei verschiedenen Phasen, einmal als Basilika und später als einhüftige Halle, rekonstruiert werden. Das eventuell zur Wurzner Kollegiatstiftskirche gehörende farbige Glasfenster in der Burgkapelle von Falkenstein sowie die Rekonstruktion des Lettners vervollständigen das Bild der gotischen Kirche. Dazu gehört auch der wiederentdeckte hochgotische Eingang der Kapitulare in den Langchor im heutigen sogenannten Kaminraum. Die Baueinheitlichkeit der doppelgeschossigen Sakristei mit dem Langchor konnte bewiesen werden. In der Spätgotik wurde die Kollegiatstiftkirche durch Bischof Johann VI. von Salhausen, der in Wurzen residierte, umgestaltet. Aus dieser Zeit stammt das bis heute erhaltene Ensemble von Schloss und der zweichörigen, nunmehr als „Dom“ bezeichneten Kirche. Von der Neugestaltung der Stiftsgebäude an der Südseite der Kirche ist kaum etwas erhalten. Dennoch lässt sich anhand von Befunden und Aktenvermerken die Anlage des spätmittelalterlichen Kreuzganges ungefähr rekonstruieren. Der spätgotische Wurzner Kirchenbau besitzt Merkmale der damals modernen Architektur. Bischof Johann VI. von Salhausen ließ sich ehrenvoll als „zweiter Fundator“ im Westen der Kirche eine Grablege einrichten und mit Figuren der Bistumspatrone und des Bistumsgründers von Meißen ausstatten. Außerdem inszenierte er die „altehrwürdigen“ Bauteile von Schiff und Langchor mit den beiden Chören im Osten und im Westen kontrastierend. Die Grablege des Bischofs im Westen der Kirche steht im Kontext mit der anderer bischöflicher Grablegen, beispielsweise in Magdeburg oder Merseburg. Vorbildlich wirkte die Fürstenkapelle des Meißner Doms. Eine kunsthistorische Analyse der Zellengewölbe in den Chören erbrachte deren Anbindung an das nahegelegene Wurzner Schloss und damit auch mit dem Bau der Meißner Albrechtsburg. Die weitgespannten, segelartigen Grate der Wurzner Chöre lassen sich stilistisch besonders gut mit den Gewölben in den Torgauer Kirchen von Hans Meltwitz vergleichen. Der Umbau der Kirche muss im Zusammenhang mit dem Neubau des Schlosses in Wurzen betrachtet werden. Das Ensemble zeigt, dass die Anlage den Vergleich mit anderen bischöflichen Residenzen nicht scheuen muss und damals modernsten Vorbildern folgt. Eine Besonderheit des Wurzner Doms stellt die malerische Ausgestaltung der Bischofskapelle im Obergeschoss des Nordturms dar. Stil und Ausprägung der figürlichen Ausmalung ist in die Zeit um 1500 in Mitteldeutschland zu verorten und von besonderer Qualität. Vor allem die italianisierende Gestaltung des Raumes mit Arkaden ist ungewöhnlich. Für die Skulpturen steht eine Anbindung zur Schule Tilman Riemenschneiders außer Frage. Die exklusive Qualität der Ausgestaltung von Schloss und Dom in Wurzen wurde in der Forschung bisher nie hervorgehoben. Anlass für den Bau des Ensembles war der Rückzug des Bischofs von Meißen bzw. Stolpen nach Wurzen. Die Formensprache des Schlosses und der auf die romanischen Dome rekurrierenden doppelchörigen Kirche sind in jedem Falle symbolisch zu deuten. Sie stellen den Anspruch des Bischofs, Reichsfürst gleichwertig neben den Wettinern zu sein, dar. Durch die Bauuntersuchungen konnte neben der bereits erwähnten vermutlichen Anlage eines Kreuzganges auch der Eingang in das ehemalige Kapitelhaus nachgewiesen werden. Auch die Erschließung der Kirche vom Schloss her wurde rekonstruiert. Um 1515 verband aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach ein Gang das Schloss mit der Bischofskapelle. Spätestens ab 1559 konnte man vom Kornhaus aus über die durch eine Inschrift datierte Brücke den Westchor der Kirche erreichen. Die Bauphasen der Kollegiatstiftskirche zeugen von Einflüssen sowohl aus der Peripherie wie aus den Zentren der Architektur. Der gotische und vor allem der spätgotische Bau sind für die Architekturgeschichte besonders bedeutsam, weil hier eine eigene Architektursprache gefunden wurde, die Impulse in die Umgegend vermittelte. Im Resultat erweist sich der Wurzner Doms als ein Schlüsselbau für die Erforschung mittelalterliche Bau- und Kunstgeschichte in Mitteldeutschland.

Questa ricerca nasce dall’esigenza di colmare le lacune storiografiche riguardo il fenomeno monastico verginiano e la sua produzione artistica in Campania e Basilicata, la cui conoscenza è ancora frammentaria e caratterizzata da scarsa organicità, prendendo in esame globalmente testimonianze monumentali spesso non sufficientemente frequentate dagli studi scientifici, accanto ad altre già sondate, ma quasi sempre per alcuni aspetti di particolare rilevanza, quali gli arredi liturgici o le sculture architettoniche. L’obiettivo è stato quello di una rilettura complessiva, sia storica che artistica, volta a una migliore comprensione delle ragioni che hanno determinato la nascita e lo sviluppo di questo patrimonio di architettura e arte monastica. L’indagine è proceduta per nuclei territoriali, prediligendo un criterio prima topografico e poi cronologico, così da poter evidenziare sito per sito la continuità di un fenomeno caratterizzato sul piano materiale dall’evoluzione delle forme insediative col passaggio dall’eremitismo al cenobitismo, e da una storia monumentale che contempla, per gli insediamenti di rientrati nell’orbita della congregazione sullo scorcio del XII secolo, restauri e ampliamenti nel costante mantenimento dei luoghi delle origini. La scelta dell’area territoriale è stata dettata dalla particolare concentrazione di esperienze monastiche in una regione che in età antica era attraversata dal tracciato della Via Appia, nella quale, in epoca medievale, rientreranno le diocesi di Avellino, Nusco, Conza della Campania e Rapolla, importanti avamposti della nobiltà normanna, che sempre vi eserciterà il suo controllo politico tramite una salda organizzazione vescovile, l’affidamento di alte cariche a uomini di fiducia, la gestione strutturata delle attività agricole ed economiche in genere, e, infine, attraverso gli enti monastici, spesso strettamente connessi al potere signorile. La ricerca ha affrontato, concentrandosi sulle fondazioni abbaziali, i secoli che vanno dalla seconda metà del XII alla seconda metà del XIV, evidenziando i cambiamenti che gli eventi storici, politici e religiosi determinarono nel rapporto tra monasteri e territorio e nelle strutture architettoniche. Il termine cronologico ultimo della trattazione coincide, per l’abbazia di Montevergine, con la fine del dominio angioino, che rappresenta l’avvio di una stasi nella produzione artistica, che riprenderà vigore solo in epoca rinascimentale. Per le fondazioni di Santa Maria di Fontigliano, San Salvatore al Goleto, Sant’Ippolito a Monticchio e Santa Maria di Pierno, monasteri fortemente condizionati dalle vicende della nobiltà normanno-sveva, la ricerca si ferma di fatto alla metà del XIII secolo, dal momento che nessun indizio, né documentario né architettonico- artistico, permette di ipotizzare una rinnovata vitalità dopo l’avvento degli Angiò, quando le loro sorti cominceranno inevitabilmente a decadere. Tuttavia, l’innesto dell’esperienza monastica francescana in Basilicata nel primo XIV secolo rappresenterà, con l’esempio del superstite chiostro del monastero di Sant’Antonio a Muro Lucano, un’ultima traccia di continuità col linguaggio espressivo maturato nell’orbita dell’esperienza verginiana. Le componenti culturali che caratterizzano i monasteri della valle dell’Ofanto e del Partenio danno vita, dalla metà del XII secolo all’età angioina, a un originale percorso creativo in cui a un latente substrato autoctono si sommano progressivamente elementi allogeni, spesso incoraggiati da scelte collegabili a peculiari situazioni politico- istituzionali o agli orientamenti della committenza. La rete di monasteri e dipendenze gravitanti attorno alle fondazioni di Santa Maria di Montevergine e San Salvatore al Goleto, in sinergia con i vicini insediamenti benedettini, si era fatta più o meno consapevolmente centro catalizzatore di maestranze di provenienza eterogenea, sparse su tutto il territorio lucano e campano, con propaggini nella Puglia garganica, oltre che vivace recettore del gusto più in voga in determinati contesti storico-geografici.

Ziel der Arbeit war, das Baugeschehen am Wurzner Dom in der Zeit zwischen seiner Gründung 1114 bis zur äußerlichen Vollendung um 1515 genauer als bisher geschehen kunsthistorisch einzuordnen. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung dafür stellt einerseits die bisherige kunsthistorische Forschung zur Baugeschichte dar, vor allem aber auch die zwischen den Jahren 2010-2014 durchgeführten Bauforschungen am Dom. Diese Bauuntersuchung wurde vom Teilprojekt D des ehemaligen SFBs 804 der TU Dresden, vertreten durch die Verfasserin, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen durchgeführt. Mit Hilfe dieser Grundlagenforschung wurde es möglich, die Baugestalt des Domes von Romanik bis zur Spätgotik weitgehend zu rekonstruieren. Folgende Hypothesen waren in der Dissertation zu erörtern: Welchen Grund- und Aufriss besaß die romanische, die gotische und die spätgotische Kollegiatstiftskirche St. Marien in Wurzen? Welche Reste lassen sich konkret aus den verschiedenen Bauphasen nachweisen? In welchen kunsthistorischen Kontext ordnen sich die Bauphasen ein? Lassen sich über den Betrachtungszeitraum hinweg charakteristische Tendenzen feststellen? Was kann über die mittelalterliche Ausstattung gesagt werden? Was lässt sich zur Lage der Kollegiatstiftsgebäude herausfinden? Der Wurzner Bau bietet sich exemplarisch für eine solche Forschung an, weil er als Kollegiatstiftskirche zwischen den großen Dombauten und den Kloster- und Pfarrkirchen in der Peripherie eine interessante Mittelstellung in der Sakralarchitektur Mitteldeutschlands einnimmt. Die heterogene Baugestalt St. Mariens ist ein Zeugnis des mittelalterlichen Baubetriebs und erlaubt einen Blick auf dessen Strukturen. Der romanische Bau der Kollegiatstiftskirche lässt sich durch seinen rekonstruierten Grundriss in die Reihe frühstädtischer Kirchen einordnen. Man orientierte sich beim Bau in Wurzen weder an den frühen Dombauten noch an dem von Klosterkirchen, die alle eher einen langgestreckten Grundriss aufweisen. Seine schlichte Bauart zeugt von der damals im Meißner Bistum in ihrem Formenrepertoire kaum durchgebildeten Architektursprache. Eine Hauptaufgabe der Meißner Bischöfe bestand in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts darin, dass neukolonialisierte Gebiet, hier an der Westgrenze zum Bistum Merseburg, zu sichern und auszubauen. Um 1200 bietet sich ein völlig anderes Bild; Bauten wie die Klosterkirche in Wechselburg oder der Freiberger Dom werden allgemeingültige architektonische Vorbilder für alle Typen von Sakralbauten. Auch die Mauertechnik wird in dieser Zeit exakter als an den erhaltenen Resten der Wurzner Kirche. Entsprechend zum Grundriss des heutigen Langhauses handelte es sich bei der romanischen Kirche um einen fast quadratischen Bau von 16m x 17m. Die Breite des Langhauses liegt bei 8m, die Arkadenspannweite bei 5m. Die steinerne romanische Kirche war eine Pfeilerbasilika ohne Querhaus und Westturm. Über die Lage und Form der ehemaligen Apsis lassen sich ohne weitere Grabungen nur Vermutungen anstellen. Die kunsthistorische Einordnung der Kirche wird von der Frage nach der Baueinheitlichkeit der beiden Chorflankentürme begleitet. Nach der Bauuntersuchung 2010-2014 und der Auswertung der archäologischen Dokumentationen ist anzunehmen, dass beide Türme im aufgehenden Mauerwerk hochgotischen Ursprungs sind. Es gibt bisher keine Befunde, die das Vorhandensein romanischer Türme belegen. Mit dieser Aussage ist eine Hauptfrage der Bauforschung mit einiger Klarheit beantwortet worden. War der romanische Bau in seinen Maßen und architektonischer Gestalt eher bescheiden, muss er dennoch als ein wichtiges Zeugnis früher romanischer Architektur in Obersachsen in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts angesehen werden. Die bisherige Datierung der romanischen Bauteile der Wurzner Kirche im Zusammenhang mit dem Weihedatum 1114 konnte genauer gefasst werden; sie ist zwischen 1114-1160 anzunehmen. Um einiges detailreicher als der romanische Bau zeigt sich der gotische Neubau des Langchors. Der erhaltene hochgotische Langchor der Wurzner Kollegiatstiftskirche wurde von der Kunstgeschichte bisher völlig übersehen. Sein rekonstruierter Grundriss als langgestreckter, flachgeschlossener Kastenraum mit queroblongen Jochen sowie die Kapitelle, Konsolen und abgekragten Dienste zeigen deutliche Bezüge zu Mendikantenarchitektur und zu derjenigen der Zisterzienser und Zisterzienserinnen. Die Genese des modernen flachgeschlossenen Chores ist für die Einordnung des Wurzner Chores von Bedeutung. Weiterhin konnte ein böhmischer Einfluss auf die Gestaltung der romanisierenden Gliederungsarchitektur nachgewiesen werden. Als charakteristische Teile sind beispielhaft das hohe Gebälk, die auskragenden Deckplatten oder die schildartigen Deckplattenaufbauten zu nennen. Zur Einordnung der Architekturglieder wurde eine vergleichende Übersicht zur hochgotischen Architektur Obersachsens und Böhmens erarbeitet. Die unterschiedliche Herkunft der „Leitbauten“ in beiden Ländern, der bischöflichen Dome in Mitteldeutschland und der von der zentralen Herrschaft des böhmischen Königs beeinflussten Architektur von Klöstern und Burgen in Böhmen, ist für die Erforschung der Verbreitung gotischer Formen wichtig. Für den Wurzner Chor spielt das vor allem hinsichtlich seiner Einordnung in eine größere Gruppe böhmisch beeinflusster Kirchen in Obersachsen und seine Datierung eine Rolle. Bisher wurde der Chor um 1260 datiert. Zum Anhand der böhmischen Vergleichsbeispiele, wie der Burgkapelle von Klingenberg (Zvikov), der böhmisch beeinflussten Vergleichsbauten in Grimma, Zittau und Görlitz sowie durch die Einordnung des Grundrisses innerhalb der Zisterzienserarchitektur und der Bettelorden kann für den Wurzner Langchor eine Bauzeit um 1250 angenommen werden. Dafür spricht auch der enge architektonische Bezug Wurzens zur Klosterkirche Schulpforta, der sich in der Gestaltung der „federnden“ Dreipässe, im Dekor der Kapitelle sowie bei der Form der Ostfenster feststellen lässt. Die Einordnung des Kapitelldekors zeigte, dass man sich in Wurzen bemühte, modernen Strömungen zu folgen, die aber eher allgemein „gotisch“ waren und keinen eindeutigen Leitbau erkennen lassen. Der gotische Bau der Kollegiatstiftskirche war sehr anspruchsvoll geplant. Man muss neben dem erhaltenen Langchor auch weitere nicht zur Ausführung gekommene Planungen für das Schiff bedenken. Die erhaltenen Wölbungsanfänger und die Befunde im Dach weisen auf eine einheitlich geplante, reiche gotische Wölbung der Kirche hin. Für den Bau der gotischen Kirche waren sowohl Kloster- als auch Stadtkirchen vorbildhaft. Mit dem Langchor in Wurzen ist ein wichtiges Bindeglied der frühen gotischen Architektur Obersachsens überliefert. Er steht zeitlich zwischen dem Bau der Klosterkirche in Schulpforta und dem des Meißner Doms. Deutlich wird, dass es neben der „klassischen“ Gotik, die an den großen Bischofs- und der Klosterkirchen der Zisterzienser zu Tage tritt, lokale Spielarten gotischen Bauens gegeben hat. Von Bedeutung ist auch die Erkenntnis, dass in der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts die Architekturströmungen nicht ausschließlich von West nach Ost verliefen, sondern, wie im Falle von Wurzen, Grimma, Zittau und Görlitz dargestellt, auch von Ost nach West. Mit Hilfe der Bauforschung konnte der Querschnitt des Langhauses der gotischen Kirche in zwei verschiedenen Phasen, einmal als Basilika und später als einhüftige Halle, rekonstruiert werden. Das eventuell zur Wurzner Kollegiatstiftskirche gehörende farbige Glasfenster in der Burgkapelle von Falkenstein sowie die Rekonstruktion des Lettners vervollständigen das Bild der gotischen Kirche. Dazu gehört auch der wiederentdeckte hochgotische Eingang der Kapitulare in den Langchor im heutigen sogenannten Kaminraum. Die Baueinheitlichkeit der doppelgeschossigen Sakristei mit dem Langchor konnte bewiesen werden. In der Spätgotik wurde die Kollegiatstiftkirche durch Bischof Johann VI. von Salhausen, der in Wurzen residierte, umgestaltet.
