In highly mobile philopatric species, defining the scale of natal homing is fundamental to characterizing population dynamics and effectively managing distinct populations. Genetic tools have provided evidence of regional natal philopatry in marine turtles, but extensive sharing of maternally inherited mitochondrial control region (CR) haplotypes within regions (<500 km) often impedes identification of population boundaries. Previous CR-based analyses of Florida (USA) green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting sites detected at least 2 populations, but the ubiquity of haplotype CM-A3.1 among south

The nasal cavity is an attractive route for both local and systemic drug delivery and holds great potential for access to the brain via the olfactory region, an area where the blood–brain barrier (BBB) is effectively absent. However, the olfactory region is located at the roof of the nasal cavity and only represents ~5–7% of the epithelial surface area, presenting significant challenges for the deposition of drug molecules for nose to brain drug delivery (NTBDD). Aerosolized particles have the potential to be directed to the olfactory region, but their specific deposition within this area is c

Resumen
AbstractRinging databases of the EURING Data Bank and the Hungarian Bird Ringing Centre were analysed in order to investigate the philopatry of the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) in three European regions. The aim of the study was to find out if there are continent-scale geographic trends in philopatry with respect to the age of the birds. Three clusters were assigned according to their geographic positions: (i) southern part of Europe (Region 1: between 36°–43° latitudes), (ii) middle part of Europe (Region 2: between 43°–49° latitudes) and (iii) northern part of Europe, (Regi

Abstract Introduction It is very important to monitor the infection of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae as a potential threat to the sheep industry. Southern Xinjiang is a major sheep breeding base in China, however, there is no relevant information concerning the infection of the region’s ovine stock with this bacteria at present. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap. Material and Methods A total of 824 nasal swabs and the lungs of six sheep that died of pneumonia were collected in four regions between 2018 and 2020. Background: Bovine herpes virus type 1 (BoHV-1) the causative agent of Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is of great concern to dairy farmers and veterinarians due to great economic impact caused by the virus in terms of loss of production and abortion. Therefore, the study was planned to detect the virus circulating in the bovine population of the region under study. This virus is an important pathogen of bovine respiratory diseases. The aim of the present study was to isolate the BoHV-1 virus from the upper respiratory tract of bovines. Methods: A total of 13 nasal swab samples were su

The trauma of the face appears with great incidence in physical aggressions and accidents, by the position of vulnerability in the body. It is subject to modifications of the etiologic agent and lesion pattern according to the socio-cultural and economic profile of the region. This study has a transverse, observational nature, of predominantly descriptive analysis. The same was done at the General Hospital of the State of Alagoas, using data collected from patient records from January to June 2012, with the aim of tracing the epidemiological profile of victims of facial trauma, with the follow

Resumen
Iris center detection accuracy has great impact on eye gaze tracking system performance. This paper proposes an easy and efficient iris center detection method based on modeling the geometric relationship between the detected rough iris center and the two corners of the eye. The method fully considers four states of iris within the eye region, i.e. center, left, right, and upper. The proposed active edge detection algorithm is utilized to extract iris edge points for ellipse fitting. In addition, this paper also presents a predicted edge point algorithm to solve the decrease in ellipse fitting

This study was carried out to investigate an outbreak of strangles in horses at the Qassim Region, Central Saudi Arabia. From 29 horses included in this study, the disease was observed in 13, five of them were died: representing a morbidity rate of 44.8% and a mortality rate of 17.24%. The morbidity and mortality rates significantly (P≤0.05) differed among different age groups. In contrast, the case fatality rate was not significantly different among different ages. Gender has no significant effect on disease occurrence. Clinically, signs observed in infected horses were high fever, anorexia,

AbstractKabuki syndrome (KS) is a well-recognized disorder characterized by postnatal growth deficiency, dysmorphic facial features, skeletal anomalies, and intellectual disability. The syndrome is caused by KMT2D gene mutations or less frequently KDM6A gene mutations or deletions. We report a systematic evaluation of KS patients from Campania region of Italy; data were also compared with literature ones. We collected data of 15 subjects (8 males and 7 females with age range 10–26 years; mean age 16.9 years) with confirmed diagnosis of KS, representing the entire cohort of patients from Campan

Background: The equine paranasal sinus have a complex anatomy and large compartiments. For this reason, deseases that affect these structures may develop for long periods before the animal show any clinical signs, making it difficult to stablish a definitive diagnosis and institute an adequate treatment. Usually, maxillary hematomas reports come from progression of ethmoidal hematomas, and the descriptions of primary maxillary hematomas are rare. This study aims to report the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of a case of a maxillary hematoma not associated with ethmoidal turbinates.C

AbstractLocal extinction and recolonization events can shape genetic structure of subdivided animal populations. The gray wolf (Canis lupus) was extirpated from most of Europe, but recently recolonized big part of its historical range. An exceptionally dynamic expansion of wolf population is observed in the western part of the Great European Plain. Nonetheless, genetic consequences of this process have not yet been fully understood. We aimed to assess genetic diversity of this recently established wolf population in Western Poland (WPL), determine its origin and provide novel data regarding th

Despite metastasis being uncommon, the extragenital involvement can occur via the lymphatic or hematogenous route to regional lymph nodes, skin, subcutaneous tissue, nasal and oral mucosa, as well as the central nervous system. When the location of the tumor is genital the clinical diagnosis can be conclusive, however if it presents extragenital forms, cytological or histopathological studies are necessary for the confirmatio
