Despite the widespread recognition of the paybacks of “going green” and “going clean”, limited research has focused on the impact of lean-green strategy on firm growth. In this study, we contribute to strategy and environmental sustainability literatures by investigating the possibility that the influence on lean-green strategy and firm growth is driven by different levels of industry competition, managerial power and family ties. Using panel data from 732 firms in four major industrialised economies (the US, Germany, France and the UK), we found that lean-green strategy positively relates to firm growth and this relationship is amplified at higher levels of competition, managerial power and family ties. Theoretical and practical implications of the study are also discussed.

Texto completo
Resumen
In this work, a comparative electrochemical study has been performed to evaluate corrosion inhibition property of several film-forming corrosion inhibitors provide by Akzo Nobel on carbon steel in a chloride solution. For carbon steel exposed to 1 M NaCl solution with and without added inhibitor, electrochemical measurements including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (LPR) at different exposure time intervals, and potentiodynamic polarization at the termination of the exposure, have been performed to investigate the film forming process and to evaluate corrosion inhibition efficiency of the inhibitors, as well as its evolution with time. The corrosion resistance data obtained from the EIS and LPR measurements are in good agreement. The results indicate different inhibition properties of the inhibitors tested. The inhibition effect of SSF CI-1 is negligible in the first hour of exposure, but it increases steadily with time for 1 day, and then remains the same level during the exposure up to one week. SSF CI-2 exhibits a good inhibition effect in the first hour, but the effect decreases with time to a low level after 8 hours, and then increases again with prolonged exposure. SSF CI-4 shows a low inhibition effect during the first day, and then increases to a maximum level after three days’ exposure. For SSF CI-5 and SSF CI-6, the inhibition effect within 8 hours is relative low but higher than that of SSF CI-4, and the effect increases with time during prolonged exposure. The SSF CI-5 seems to be better than SSF CI-6 because of a more stable inhibition effect. The EIS results indicate that most of the inhibitors form a resistive surface film on carbon steel, which becomes more resistive and protective after several days’ of exposure. However, in the initial stage of exposure, the SSF CI-6 does not show an effect of formation of a resistive film on the surface. The potentiodynamic polarization measurements suggest that, SSF CI-1 and SSF CI-2 are anodic type inhibitor, SSF CI-4 is cathodic type inhibitor, and SSF CI-5 and SSF CI-6 are mix type inhibitor. Moreover, the inhibitors tested show a similar corrosion inhibition effect as mussel adhesive protein (MAP) at the low dosage level.

Resumen
As a result of crisis and scandals, a lot of criticism has been emphasized against an auditor’sindependence and profession. In order to re-establish confidence in financial statements, theEuropean Commission introduced a Green Paper that above all included a proposal of mandatoryaudit firm rotation aiming to enhance an auditor's independence. The aim of this thesis istherefore to describe whether an auditor’s independence may be affected by the new lawregarding Mandatory Audit Firm Rotation, by contributing with more information regarding auditfirm rotation based on Swedish companies from the Swedish market. The study is based on a quantitative approach using a multivariate logistic regression in order tocompile and analyze the results. Six hypotheses have been tested in order to determine whetherchosen variables may affect an auditor's independence and their statements. Based on our results,we accepted four hypotheses, showing that four variables have an influence on qualified opinion, with rotation as a reference variable. The four variables are leverage, size, specialist and losswhich showed a statistically significance using a 5% significance level. The results imply thataudit firm rotation may enhance an auditor's independence.

Resumen
Introduction: It is undeniable that green effort returns more than just a better image for firms. GSCM initiative has resulted in many successful companies transition to a more sustainable organization and supply network. However, the evidence for smaller entities are not abundantly available and one can assume that GSCM is not currently adopted among this size of enterprises. With this premise, the study focuses on why these firms are reluctant to adopt GSCM initiative. The study focuses on a single case study of one successful business not adopting GSCM.   Purpose: To help SMEs prepare for what they might expect when taking green initiative, this study seeksto find barriersfor why GSCM is not adopted among smaller firms. Method: A single holistic explorative study have been conducted. With qualitative approach, the interviews are analyzed and deliver enriched data to unveil reason for thefirms in this study supply network.  Findings: Every respondent admitted to having financial constraint. Therefore, they are not investing in the GSCM initiative because of unknown ROI.This indicate that the firm do not know enough about the initiative and left out one important activity following the initiative, the value chain. These firms also recognize external barriers, this again turnsback to knowledge of value chain and lacking in communication.  Conclusion: The barriers appear in internal and external form, meaning that some barriers are over the firm’s owncontrol. However, smaller firms somehow unconsciously create own barriers by not having a good communication and neglecting shared environmental value within their own supply network.

Resumen
Today there are numerous methods to slow down a corrosion process of metallic materials. However, due to environmental effects and health risk issues, several traditional corrosion inhibitors have to be phased out. Hence, it is of great importance to develop new corrosion inhibitors that are “green”, safe, smart and multifunctional. In this essay, the focus is on mussel adhesive protein (MAP) and its possibility to reduce the rate of the corrosion process. The protein exhibit great adhesive strength and protective properties, allowing it to adhere to a multitude of different surfaces and is therefore of great interest of corrosion science. The protein Mefp-1, derived from the blue mussel´s foot, had been pre-adsorbed on the carbon steel surface and provided good corrosion inhibition in a basic chloride solution for a short exposure time. The protection was further improved with the assist of iron and ceria ions by formation of protein/ions complexes within the surface films and thus enhanced the corrosion protection for longer exposure time. Ceria nanoparticles were used in order to create a multi-layer composite film with an even higher corrosion protection. The results suggest a denser film compared to previous samples and a more uniform surface.

Resumen
The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about preschool-children´s behavior as consumers and producers of image through digital tools. The study is about the older preschool-children based on three different observations that are investigated with the help of video-observation. The various parts of the observations are children as consumers, children as producers and at the end a feedback is made together with the children. In the first observation the preschooler’s knowledge and understanding of manipulated images are examined. The second observation is about the children´s actions as producers by creating their own manipulated films with the help of Green Screen. The third observation is a reflection that is done with the children. The result shows that the children lacks knowledge and understanding of manipulated image. The children often choose to commute between fantasy and reality. It also turns out that children do not review images and films in the same way that adults do. The study shows that the children choose to act as producers instead of consumers in cooperation with the digital tools. The study also makes visible that the digital tool is seen as familiar to the children and they show digital competence during the time they produce using the tablet. The study is based on the sociocultural perspective where language is seen as an important component of all the study´s observations.

Suansawat, Rachata. "The influence of supply chain integration and green supply chain management practices on sustainable firm performance in Thai manufacturing industry". Thesis, University of Hull, 2013. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:10514.

Resumen
Sustainability become a new challenge for various dimensions, not only in academic area, but also has managerial perspectives. Consequently, to achieve competitive advantage, leading to sustainable performance, organisations need to explore what are the causes of the sustainable performance of the firm and how to manage them. Currently, natural environmental impact is more likely to be a critical problem for any organisation. Based on natural resource-based view of the firm (Hart, 1995), natural environmental issues can make a firm obtain new potential specific resources that are difficult to imitate by other organisations. Such resources can be created by supply chain integration (SCI) and also green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. However, there is inconclusive about the impact of SCI and GSCM practices on sustainable performance, in terms of evidence environmental and economic perspective. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between SCI, GSCM practices and sustainable performance, both direct and indirect effect of the relations. Base on survey method, this research used manufacturers in Thailand as a sample of the developing countries to collect data which come from multiple manufacturing industries. The research methodology used the Churchill (1979) framework for specifying and generating measured items. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to extract the main factors before using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. Measurement model was firstly used to evaluate all measures and structural model was employed to test theoretical hypotheses. The empirical results of this research conclude that SCI has no direct positive impact on sustainable performance. Nevertheless, environmental and economic outcomes can be achieved by mediating effect of GSCM practices. Therefore, this research contributes to theoretical and practical view. In academic perspective, researchers can extend this finding to study on this issue further, while in managerial view, practitioners or managers can apply this result to their business strategies to improve their organisational performance.

De, Klerk Edwin Cavin. "Why does the strategic positioning of Econo-Heat's wall-panel heater justify a green marketing strategy". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/21376.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
This case study explores why the strategic positioning of the wall-panel heater, manufactured by Econo-Heat, justifies a green marketing strategy. The primary research objective is to provide Econo-Heat with a coherent marketing strategy framework, based on the outcome of the strategic analysis of the competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater. The following factors form the context of the study: the impact companies have on the environment, the energy crisis and the rising “green economy” in South Africa, and the increased consumer awareness about lifestyle consequences for the environment. The wall-panel heater uses convection-heating technology to warm rooms and has unique selling properties, such as being energy efficient, economical, effective and safe. Other space-heating products found in South Africa do not encapsulate all these qualities in one product. A strategic analysis done of the company revealed that the current competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater is a best-cost strategy. However, based on a literature review, the strategic analysis of the company and an exploration of the small household appliance consumer profile, the study found that the current competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater could be augmented. The combination of factors revealed by this study could be interpreted as push-factors towards the implementation of an applicable green marketing strategy that could support the re-positioning of the wall-panel heater to a broad-differentiated competitive positioning. These factors are the unique selling properties of the wall-panel heater, the lean manufacturing principles of the company, the rising green economy in the country, the energy crisis and the slow recovery from the global financial crisis in South Africa, as well as the unique characteristics of the environmentally-focused consumer. The view is held that green marketing can mitigate mass consumption. The case study suggests a future marketing strategy framework that consists of three combined elements. First, the argument is made that the unique selling properties of the wall-panel heater in combination with the unique operations of the company, against the backdrop of external factors that influence companies and consumers (i.e. the rising green economy and the energy crisis), could be utilised to discover new market space. The concept of “lateral marketing” is suggested as a framework should the company position itself to differentiate along the green dimension. Secondly, the “green marketing strategy matrix” is suggested as a framework to establish the size and greenness of its consumer segment, as well as the ability to differentiate along the green dimension. Lastly, the suggestion is made that the marketing objective of the company (its greenness) can be measured through the application of a “green marketing grid” that leads to innovation and the challenging of consumer behaviour. The combination of these elements is thought to form a coherent green marketing framework that could in future place the product at a strategic and competitive advantage within the space-heating industry.

Smit, Wiehahn. "Assessing the contribution of quality and efficiency initiatives to reduce productions costs at Distell's Green Park". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/5042.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Manufacturers can gain a competitive advantage through lower production cost, better quality, better efficiencies and being more flexible and dependable than its competitors. Lower production cost can be a result of first-time-right quality products and efficient production processes in terms of throughput. Low production cost is not a destination but a journey where the goalpost will always move as competitors will continuously come up with ideas to lower prices and margins have to be cut in order to stay competitive. This is where manufacturers must come up with initiatives to continuously drive its operational metrics to remain competitive. This research report will explain how Distell's biggest bottling plant, Green Park, successfully introduced Process Control to increase its quality operational metric and a Six Sigma project to reduce downtime to increase its efficiency operational metric to drive its operational costs down. Process Control was introduced as a TOM initiative with a subsequent reduction in rework due to poor quality (thousands) from R1 585 to R484. This contributed to 'first-time-right' production, better efficiencies and not tying up valuable production time with reworks. The Six Sigma principles were used on a production line to introduce initiatives to reduce changeovers and unplanned downtime to improve its GEE. This initiative has a projected benefit of R687 (thousands). The report also indicated that a 1% increase in Green Park's overall GEE will result in 1% saving of production hours resulting in a 1% saving of variable cost. This will result in an OEE of 63% that will save 226 hours and R410(thousands).

Corrosion of metallic materials is a natural process, and our study shows that even in an alkaline environment severe corrosion may occur on a carbon steel surface. While corrosion cannot be stopped it can be retarded. Many of the traditional anti-corrosion approaches such as the chromate process are effective but hazardous to the environment and human health. Mefp-1, a protein derived from blue mussel byssus, is well known for its extraordinary adhesion and film forming properties. Moreover, it has been reported that Mefp-1 confers a certain corrosion protection for stainless steel. All these facts indicate that this protein may be developed into corrosion inhibitors with ‘green’, ‘effective’ and ‘smart’ properties. In this study, a range of surface-sensitive techniques have been used to investigate adsorption kinetics, film forming and film compaction mechanisms of Mefp-1. In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables the protein adsorption on substrates to be visualized, whereas the ex situ AFM facilitates the characterization of micro- and nano-structures of the protein films. In situ Peak Force AFM can be used to determine nano-mechanical properties of the surface layers. The quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) was used to reveal the build-up of the Mefp-1 film on substrates and measure the viscoelastic properties of the adsorbed film. Analytical techniques and theoretical calculations were applied to gain insights into the formation and compaction processes such as oxidation and complexation of pre-formed Mefp-1 films. The electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to obtain the chemical composition of the surface layer. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were performed to evaluate the corrosion inhibition efficiency of different forms of Mefp-1 on carbon steel substrates. The results demonstrate that Mefp-1 adsorbs on carbon steel surfaces across a broad pH interval, and it forms a continuous film covering the substrate providing a certain extent of corrosion protection. At a higher pH, the adsorption is faster and the formed film is more compact. At neutral pH, results on the iron substrate suggest an initially fast adsorption, with the molecules oriented preferentially parallel to the surface, followed by a structural change within the film leading to molecules extending towards solution. Both oxidation and complexation of the Mefp-1 can lead to the compaction of the protein films. Addition of Fe3+ induces a transition from an extended and soft protein layer to a denser and stiffer one by enhancing the formation of tri-Fe3+/catechol complexes in the surface film, leading to water removal and film compaction. Exposure to a NaIO4 solution results in the cross-linking of Mefp-1, which also results in a significant compaction of the pre-formed protein film. Mefp-1 is an effective corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel when added to an acidic solution, and the inhibition efficiency increases with time. As a film-forming corrosion inhibitor, the pre-formed Mefp-1 film provides a certain level of corrosion protection for short term applications, and the protection efficiency can be significantly enhanced by the film compaction processes. For the long term applications, a thin film composed of Mefp-1 and ceria nanoparticles was developed. The deposited Mefp-1/ceria composite film contains micro-sized aggregates of Mefp-1/Fe3+ complexes and CeO2 particles. The Mefp-1/ceria film may promote the further oxidation of ferrous oxides, and the corrosion resistance increases with time. Moreover, phosphate ions react with Fe ions released from the surface and form deposits preferentially at the surface defect sites. The deposits incorporate into the Mefp-1/ceria composite film and heal the surface defects, which result in a significantly improved corrosion inhibition effect for the Mefp-1/ceria composite film in both initial and prolonged exposure situations

Karlsson, Oscar y Fredrik Rydqvist. "Why are Swedish cleantech firms failing to internationalize? : A qualitative study investigating the barriers, drivers and internationalization decisions of private Swedish cleantech firms". Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för marknadsföring (MF), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-64859.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what barriers and drivers influences the internationalization of private Swedish cleantech firms. The model of a multiple case study was chosen together with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. This was done by acquiring primary information from seven private cleantech companies, all located in Sweden and active in international markets. Furthermore, the theoretical framework presented the Uppsala model, network perspective, international new ventures, born globals, transaction cost theory and the OLI-model. With this theoretical framework, a conceptual model was created which shows how the parts are connected. In the empirical chapter, the primary data is presented to visualize what each individual company said regarding the different constructs of internationalization, drivers, barriers and internationalization decisions. Moreover, the analysis chapter visualizes the similarities and the dissimilarities between the theory and the empirical findings. The thesis concludes that there are both general, as well as specific barriers and drivers that are influential in the internationalization process of private Swedish cleantech firms. These are shown to influence the internationalization decision of managers to take an incremental approach to internationalization. The authors of the thesis also present the view that Swedish cleantech companies are generally too small, lack the financial resources and managerial drive needed to internationalize. The authors also present the theoretical and practical implications and provide recommendations for future research.

Lee, Toby Kim. "Public Culture and Cultural Citizenship at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival". Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11165.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation explores the relationship between state, citizen and public culture through an ethnographic and historical examination of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in northern Greece. In the two-year period leading up to and following its fiftieth anniversary in 2009, the festival was caught up in the larger economic, political and social crises that have overtaken Greece in the last five years - a painful period of rapid transformation and neoliberalization for one of Europe's staunchest social-welfare states. As the Greek state faces bankruptcy - both economic and political - it is being forced to revisit the terms of its social contract with its citizens. In a country where "culture" was once touted as a national "heavy industry," the relationship between the state and cultural production is also being restructured. Public culture is one of the areas of social life in which people are now struggling with these changes and attempting to redefine what it means to be a citizen of the Greek state - utilizing and revising local, national and transnational identities in the process.

Texto completo
Resumen
As developing countries have grown aware of the effects of pollution and resource depletion, industrialized countries that produce environmental goods and services have secured new markets where to export them. In this manner, increased concerns over environmental degradation have led to the growth of the green technology sector which is currently in full expansion. The purpose of the thesis is, therefore, to uncover the dynamics of such exchanges by exploring the interactions of Quebec environmental firms in the People's Republic of China (PRC).
Results indicate that the PRC presents accommodative structures that are compatible with those found in Quebec, but an inappropriate level of protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs). This scenario gives the PRC a certain advantage since most local firms are able to reproduce foreign technologies without being constrained by issues of intellectual property. Combining theoretical and practical approaches, the thesis uncovers that accommodative conditions do not supersede the question of IPRs when attempting to ensure transfers. Even though the current state of these factors affects the nature of the agreements, the environmental aspect of these technologies seems to facilitate the transactions.

Kurniadi, Muhammad Ardi y Hamid Mohamed. "Green and Global: Internationalization of eco-innovated Born Global firms : Case Study of biocomposite plastic industry". Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Industriell teknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-446822.

Texto completo
Resumen
Sustainability and eco-innovation trends in business are increasingly diffused globally. The quest for sustainable materials to overcome the alarming global tendency of plastic ubiquity is one of the main reasons for such trends. It draws the attention of international actors in the business ranging from a big incumbent multinational company to a small but international firm. The phenomenon of a small firm that quickly becomes global is pervasive and contributes crucially to the global economy. Due to the born global (BG) novelty, internationalization in BG firms has been elaborated primarily in a general context, excluding the firms and industry-particular characteristics. The study aims to understand the internationalization process of a BG firm equipped with an eco-innovation context at the early stage in the biocomposite industry, using an effectual approach as conceptual lenses. The conceptual lens creates interplay among the combined international business area,  international entrepreneurship, and emerging eco-innovation field through the embedded effectuation principles. The study embraces an inductive case study approach which involves 12 participants from international actors and members of BG firms in semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, the industrial context of the study revolves around the biocomposite industry and its network to view eco-innovation nuance. The research found that Eco-innovation technology competence becomes the available means to internationalize for BG firm. Moreover, it is concluded that the effectuation theory is reliable both to be used by researchers in analyzing the phenomenon and dominantly used by the entrepreneur in internationalizing their business in uncertain time such as the early stage of internationalization. BG firm utilizes the contingencies through a learning process iteratively but at a quick pace due to their alliance with the network, but the business form is more effectually transformed instead of incrementally changing and well-planned.  The use of a formal causation approach was present yet limited during the process. The findings of this study add to the existing literature of internationalization by incorporating eco-innovation, as well as bridging the gap between eco-innovation, international business, and entrepreneurship literature.

Milne, Jeremy. "Post-fire colonization of Cistus creticus L. seedlings by ectomycorrhizal fungi in Aleppo pine forests in Central Greece". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11173.

Texto completo
Resumen
Cistus creticus L is an ectomycorrhizal woody perennial that establishes after fires in Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) forests from small, hard-coated seeds that are stored in the soil. Field observations, and field and greenhouse bioassays were used to assess spatial and temporal variation in post fire colonization of Cistus creticus by ectomycorrhizal fungi and to investigate the potential of resprouting shrubs to act as refugia to ectomycorrhizal fungal inoculum. Four months after fire, ectomycorrhizal fungal inoculum was stratified both vertically and horizontally. Cistus creticus seedlings were predominantly colonized by E-strain and other ascomycete fungi that occurred mostly in top 3 cm of root systems throughout the forest. Basidiomycete fungi were rare and confined to lower parts of root systems in seedlings establishing close to both ectomycorrhizal and non-ectomycorrhizal resprouting shrubs. Few of the fungi colonizing naturally establishing seedlings appeared in the greenhouse bioassay of soils taken from the same site suggesting that most of these fungi colonize from mycelial inoculum attached to living or recently dead root systems of mature trees or shrubs. In the absence of competition from other EM fungi, the pot-grown seedlings were heavily dominated by one of the unidentified fungi observed in the top 3 cm of naturally establishing seedlings. This fungus formed a discontinuous Hartig net with or without a weak mantle in both short and long roots. Sequential observations of naturally establishing seedlings revealed that this pattern of colonization was common in naturally establishing seedlings during the first four months after germination. After six months, this fungus had been largely replaced on the short roots by other fungi but maintained its colonization of the long roots. Though the identity of this fungus remains unknown, its affinity to species of desert truffle (Tirmania and Terfezia spp.) is discussed. This unknown fungus and that forming the E-strain morphotype appear to provide an important initial source of inoculum in the immediate post-germination phase while other fungi are recovering from the fire. Interactions between plants and fungi are discussed in the context of nutrient acquisition and fungal regeneration strategies.

Texto completo
Resumen
Photorealism is what visual effects are all about most of the time. This report entails digital compositing and studio lighting, in relation to Chroma key film material, aimed to give a photorealistic impression.    One of the identified problems in this report is that compositors may get Chroma key footage where the lighting is done poorly, which means a lot of extra work for the compositors and it might even make it impossible to create the desired end result.    Another problem recognized is that the knowledge that these professions possess is often tacit, not available in texts or even functionally defined.    Considering these problems, the purpose of this report is to articulate and try the tacit knowledge found in respect to these research questions: Which factors can alter the photorealistic impression of filmed Chroma key material? To what extent can different factors be altered in the compositing process, for a photorealistic result? How can a photorealistic result from composited Chroma key material be enabled and facilitated, with focus on studio lighting?       Methods used to answer these questions are interviews with compositors, a case study of a small video production, and the production of video clips, including studio lighting and compositing.    While professionals often write about the importance of consistency in image characteristics between different element that are composited together, this report defines which specific features that ought to be consistent, for a photorealistic result.    Further findings are focused on the limitations of the compositor; i.e. the features that are possible to manipulate and the features that have to be set correctly when filming in the studio, to enable a photorealistic outcome. Nonetheless, the main focus will be on the features of lighting set in the Chroma key film studio.    In fact, there are many features that are crucial for enabling and facilitating the compositing of a photorealistic end product. While some of the findings are new, others confirm what has already been presented.

Resumen
Polymeric materials are widely used in diverse applications. However, a major weakness in the majority of the thermoplastic polymers is their lack of ability to resist fire. Most of the chemicals and additives currently used to improve fire retardancy have deleterious effects on the environment. This research focuses on developing an environmentally safe and effective fire-retardant system for high density polyethylene (HDPE), using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and zinc oxide (ZnO). The effect of CNCs coated with nano ZnO has been investigated for improving the fire resistance properties of the HDPE. Improved dispersion of CNCs into HDPE matrix was achieved by employing maleic anhydride as a coupling agent. It was found that addition of CNCs-ZnO can introduce a reasonable level of flame retardancy in HDPE matrix in addition to improving the maximum tensile strength and elongation at break.

Olson, Michael G. "Remote Sensing of Forest Health Trends in the Northern Green Mountains of Vermont". ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2012. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/172.

Texto completo
Resumen
Northeastern forests are being impacted by unprecedented environmental stressors, including acid deposition, invasive pests, and climate change. Forest health monitoring at a landscape scale is necessary to evaluate the changing condition of forest resources and to inform management of forest stressors. Traditional forest health monitoring is often limited to specific sites experiencing catastrophic decline or widespread mortality. Satellite remote sensing can complement these efforts by providing comprehensive forest health assessments over broad regions. Subtle changes in canopy health can be monitored over time by applying spectral vegetation indices to multitemporal satellite imagery. This project used historical archives of Landsat-5 TM imagery and geographic information systems to examine forest health trends in the northern Green Mountains of Vermont from 1984 to 2009. Results indicate that canopy health has remained relatively stable across most of the landscape, although decline was present in localized areas. Significant but weak relationships were discovered between declining forest health and spruce-fir-paper birch forests at high elevations. Possible causes of decline include the interacting effects of acid deposition, windthrow, and stressful growing environments typical of montane forests.

Kovalenko, Iryna. "Analysis of CSR for the world class ICT companies from Green IT perspectives". Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-162510.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is based on the concept of corporate social responsibility in world class ICT companies. This relatively new way of managing business became very popular among big corporations which are trying to reduce their environmental footprint while following the path of sustainable development. The aim of this study is to prove the importance of Green IT in the current dynamically developing world of ICT, and to explore the area of sustainability from the Green IT perspective. That is why three main areas are defined: sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and Green IT. The first part of the thesis covers interconnectivity between those terms. The next part represents the process of launching green initiatives into a corporate business model. It describes all the necessary steps of implementation, especially showing the important legislative aspects which help to prevent many potential issues. These practices are based on the MMDIS methodology and its conceptual Model of Integration. Another target of this thesis is to define the leading ICT vendors from all the perspectives -- as the most socially responsible company and the most preferable employer. The obtained results distinguish five companies from the others: Hewlett-Packard, Dell, IBM, Intel and Microsoft. The key achievement and added value of the thesis is the identification of the most problematic areas in the analyzed companies and presentation of their Green IT solution to prevent following issues.

Aken, Andrew. "How an Organization's Environmental Orientation Impacts Environmental Performance and its Resultant Financial Performance through Green Computing Hiring Practices: An Empirical Investigation of the Natural Resource-Based View of the Firm". OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/194.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation uses the logic embodied in Strategic Fit Theory, the Natural Resource-Based View of the Firm (NRBV), strategic human resource management, and other relevant literature streams to empirically demonstrate how the environmental orientation of a firm's strategy impacts their environmental performance and resultant financial performance through the firm's Information Technology hiring practices. Specifically, it was hypothesized that firms with a strong relationship between the environmental orientation of their strategy and their green computing hiring practices will achieve higher environmental performance, and, as a result, higher levels of financial performance than firms lacking such fit. The organization's environmental orientation was measured via content analysis of the annual report texts (ARTs). Environmental performance was measured using KLD's award-winning environmental performance metrics. I triangulated across efficiency, effectiveness, and market-based metrics to capture a more holistic measure of the firm's financial performance using data from Compustat/Research Insight. The firm's green computing hiring practices were measured utilizing a web content data mining application that pulled job ads for computing graduates and then extracted the environmentally-oriented skills identified in such ads using content analytic techniques. Various control variables were employed to eliminate possible alternative explanations of my research findings. A number of statistical and analytical techniques were used to assess the nature and strength of the relationships in my theoretical model as are articulated in the proposed hypotheses. The sample size of firms is fairly large, thus increasing the statistical power of the empirical tests. Previous empirical testing of the relationship between environmental strategy and financial performance is still in the developmental stages and has produced mixed results, partly because important intervening mechanisms, such as green computing hiring practices, has not received adequate attention in the empirical literature. The combination of using a large sample of real world firms, a powerful combination of qualitative and quantitative methodological techniques to tap into key trace evidence not available through other methodological techniques, and leveraging an award-winning environmental data set has enhanced the robustness of the empirical findings in addressing this important gap in the literature. The results of the analyses show that there is a strong relationship between an organization's environmental posturing and its environmental performance. Additionally, this effect is mediated by the organization's environmental hiring practices, indicating that implementing the organization's environmental strategy through its hiring practices is important in achieving improved environmental performance. The current research also shows that there is a strong and positive relationship between an organization's environmental performance and financial performance. Surprisingly, these relationships are not significantly impacted by the organization's industry affiliation, which broadens the generalizability of the results of this study.

Dias, Bernardo Miguel Vieira Rodrigues. "The relationship between Corporate Green Bond Yields and Firm Leverage". Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/34137.

Texto completo
Resumen
Green bonds, whose proceeds are used towards environmental-friendly projects, are still perceived as a relatively new financial instrument with the first Green bond being issued in 2007. However, the market is growing rapidly worldwide since its debut with almost 700 Green bonds and approximately $200bn issued in 2020. Several authors have already conducted studies regarding Green bond premiums and pricing. They have focused their studies either on municipalities and corporations, like Flammer (2018), Baker et al. (2018), Tang and Zhang (2018), (Zerbib 2019) among others. In this work we manually collect information on a large set of Green bond issuers and examine specifically Corporate Green Bonds and, more importantly, the relationship between the Yield to Maturity (YTM) of a Green Bond and the Leverage ratio of its issuer. For this, we have used a database composed by 2,054 Green Bonds and 37,771 Conventional Bonds for 956 unique issuers. First, the results suggest that Green bonds have a negative premium i.e., the YTM of a Green bond is lower than the YTM of a Conventional bond: on average, the mean YTM is -0.971 basis points for Green Bonds. When we look exclusively at Green Bonds and by studying the relationship between the YTM and the Leverage ratio from the issuer, our results shows that the YTM will be lower with a higher Leverage ratio from the issuer (-0.0850 basis points), meaning if the issuer has several issued bonds with a higher leverage, the YTM of a Green bond will be lower.

With the global warming, people are considering more about environment. After Freeman’s book published in 1984, the stakeholder concept was prosperous. In this study, we investigate the antecedent role of stakeholders on green innovation. Then we explored whether a firm implements green innovation can influence its environmental and firm performance. In this study, we wanted to examine the differences between service and manufacturing industry. We conducted an empirical research within hotels, logistics, contractors, photoelectric, computer peripherals and automobile manufacturing industries. Due to the small sample size and the response between service and manufacturing industry was no significant different, we combined service and manufacturing data. Overall, this study analyzes the data we received 202 respondents from six industries. We adopted SPSS and Partial Least Square (PLS) to analyze our data. The research findings indicated that external stakeholders’ pressure and employees’ pressure can promote firms to adopt green innovation. Moreover, firms who implement green innovation will generate better environmental and firm performance.
