Wendt, Robert J. "Group homes for the mentally retarded: a study of community and freedom". Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74530.

Texto completo
Resumen
Through a case study, this study examines the organizational structure of group homes for the mentally retarded. The case study is found to represent a new form of communal organization according to Hillery's theory of communal organization (1968; 1978). As a communal organization, the structural measures utilized to maximize freedom in this group home are examined. A discussion of the implications of this study towards community theory and the management of group homes follows.

Showfety, Michael S. "A case study of group home development for persons with mental retardation: entry approaches and neighborhood opposition". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74215.

Texto completo
Resumen
Normalization of persons with mental retardation has been a national goal for the past twenty-five years, and deinstitutionalization is the driving force to the attainment of this goal. Small group homes, or community based facilities, are viewed as a viable alternative to institutionalization. The sponsors of group homes have encountered neighborhood opposition to such an extent that specialized approaches for neighborhood entry have been developed. However, the efficacy of these entry approaches has received little empirical attention. The purpose of this study was to investigate entry approaches employed by sponsors of group homes in their attempts to locate in local communities. Structured personal interviews were conducted with sponsoring agency officials, managers of the group homes, area housing authorities, and persons residing in neighborhoods where group homes for persons with mental retardation were located during the months of May, June, and July, 1985. Individual case studies regarding seven group homes established in a large county in the state of North Carolina have been presented. Grouped data have also been reported in the attempt to investigate the efficacy of entry approaches the literature is currently advocating.

Burford, Gale E. "Assessing teamwork : a comparative study of group home teams in Newfoundland and Labrador". Thesis, University of Stirling, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21827.

Resumen
A combined, multiple-methods action research strategy is constructed and used to assess teams of personnel working in and around group homes for mentally retarded adults and young offenders in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador between August, 1983 and January, 1987. Grounded in the practise experiences and previous research of the author, the question "what works?" is developed both as a contextual framework for the examination of teamwork as a component of professional practise and as a contextual feature of group care. The question is used to guide categorization and organization of differences amongst 51 sample teams in order to isolate valid and reliable measures of team work functioning. Drawing from four distinct theoretical traditions comprising core knowledge of human behaviour in the social environment, multiple methodologies for differentiating within and amongst teams are combined to triangulate data around the central research question. A methodology for the collection and analysis of data which are thought to represent the "lived experiences" of sample subjects is developed and used to illuminate the phenomenological alignments of team members. Qualitative themes in the reports of on- and off-the-job satisfactions and frustrations for sample subjects are examined for teams and for occupational groupings. Separate measures of Level of Organizational Change and Prevalence of Stressful working Conditions are developed and used to examine the interplay between these variables and other preselected variables. The assessment procedures and the typology of team functioning developed by Fulcher (1983) are replicated. Specific flaws and limitations in Fulcher's methodology and design are overcome through the use of a different theoretical orientation, extensions and refinements of the methodology, changes in instrumentation and by replicating his findings with a more homogeneous sample. Four of the team styles of adaptation are empirically validated and their descriptions refined. Both linear and non-linear statistical analytic methods are used to test for correlation and association between and among preselected variables. The Heimler/Fulcher Work Orientation Schedule, which serves as the basis for Fulcher's interpretative categorization of teams, is subjected to tests of reliability and validity and found to meet predetermined expectations. Through the use of an international, comparative data base, norms for team satisfaction and ratio of frustration to satisfaction for this instrument are empirically validated. Further research using Fulcher's typology along with the Work Orientation Schedule is indicated. Field observation recordings, sample subjects' personal narratives, the social policy and corporate contexts in which the study takes place, and a mythical, yet ultimately necessary, experiment which takes place in the future are all used to illuminate and ground the findings in the action research process.

Collins, Shawnee Dee. "The Effects of Video Modeling on Staff Implementation of the Picture Exchange Communication System in a Group Home for People with Intellectual Disabilities". DigitalCommons@USU, 2012. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1152.

Texto completo
Resumen
Treatment integrity has recently received increased attention in behavior analytic research. As more individuals with intellectual disabilities live in integrated, community group home settings, it is increasingly important that direct support staff are well trained to implement behavioral interventions, including skill acquisition programs. However, given the typically low supervisor-staff ratios and lack of prior training for most residential staff, providing the adequate intensity of training to teach sophisticated behavior skills is challenging. These studies investigated the effects of watching a video model and completing a brief quiz on staff’s ability to implement Phases I (study 1) and II (study 2) of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) in group homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. Moreover, the effects of this staff training on clients’ correct use of PECS was also evaluated. Each study used a nonconcurrent multiplebaseline design across participants to evaluate the effects of the intervention procedures. In study 1, all four primary staff participants increased the percentage of correctly implemented Phase I steps after viewing the video model and completing the quiz. In addition, one of the primary staff participants generalized the skills to a second client participant. Likewise, secondary staff participants also demonstrated improvement after the intervention and clients demonstrated an increase in correct picture exchanges. In study 2, all three staff participants increased the percentage of correctly implemented Phase II steps after viewing the video model and taking the quiz and these effects maintained over time.

Resumen
People with disabilities are both functionally and socially disadvantaged and the lack of access to mobile communication technology adds to their disadvantage. Changes and benefits we have seen in our society with the advent of mobile phones and associated electronic communication for people without disabilities have not migrated to people with disabilities. The comprehensive communication capability of a mobile phone can enable users anywhere to independently access a very wide range of communication, information and control systems and services. This research has addressed the key accessibility issues faced by people with disabilities who need or want to use the mobile phone for voice and data communication. The research revealed that: there exist accessible features on mobile phones that can better assist people with disabilities in using the phone; through education and training, people with disabilities can develop or be provided with effective and efficient ways to access and use the phone; current, off-the-shelf telecommunications equipment such as car kits, speakerphone, voice recognition technology, wireless connectivity capability on mobile phones can enable people with disabilities, even severe physical disabilities, to access the telecommunications network and services; and with a suitable interfacing system in place, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device users can operate the phone for voice and data communication, which previously had not been possible. Trials established that people with a range of physical disabilities can use and should have equal access to telecommunications equipment and services. This research has shown that, with the right policies, processes and support through equipment matching, education, training and delivery, current off-the-shelf solutions can help people with disabilities to effectively communicate with other members of our society and to access the same range of information systems and services enjoyed by able-bodied members of the community. An interfacing system has been developed to provide users of AAC technology with the ability to use a mobile phone for voice calls and text messaging (SMS). It is confidently predicted that other features and services on the phone such as speakerphone, digital camera and FM radio, email and internet-based applications, and local or remote appliances and devices, can be controlled via the AAC device. Outcomes and findings have confirmed the main hypothesis of the thesis that, despite very limited mobility, speed, accuracy and vocal communication ability, users will be able to successfully operate the mobile phone itself, and use it for various modes of bidirectional communication with systems to which they choose to connect. The overall outcomes of the research have established that the benefits and usefulness of the mobile phone are so significant that they should become a necessity for people with a disability. It has been successfully demonstrated that, with the proper mechanisms and educational programs in place, the provision of accessible mobile phones for people with disabilities can significantly improve their quality of life through increased range of accessible activities, and will improve their independence, engagement with their peers, safety, security and self-esteem.

Resumen
This thesis reports the results of a comparison of the experiences of community participation between two groups of people - people with intellectual disability and non-disabled people. An interview schedule was developed, based on the social integration literature, government policy and a small empirical study. The common factors from these three bases were represented in the interview schedule which covered the areas of degree of social contact with family, friends and neighbours; involvement in the local community; and degree of satisfaction with the local community. Thirty people with intellectual disability and sixty non-disabled people were interviewed using the schedule. The non-disabled people lived in the same street (if possible) or within very close vicinity of the people with intellectual disability. The findings of community participation for people with intellectual disability reflected other research, indicating that this group had limited social contact, and reported few friendships in the community, but participated to a large extent in community activities and made use of community facilities. This group were also inclined to report satisfaction with living in, and feeling like part of the community. For non disabled people, the findings reflect a group that does not particularly feel like part of the community and makes limited use of community facilities. However, this group reported regular contact with family, friends and neighbours. The above findings are discussed with relevance to policy, theory, research and practice.

Croom, Sarah. "The development & evaluation of a mindfulness group intervention for people with intellectual disabilities". Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/617864.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can be effective in the treatment and management of a variety of psychological and physical health conditions. Whilst under researched, there is growing evidence to support the use of MBIs with individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) who may require adaptation to existing MBIs as a result of cognitive or other impairments. Method: This research dossier describes the development of an 8-week mindfulness group for adults with IDs. Two mindfulness groups were delivered by community practitioners. Participants completed self-report measures of anxiety and depression pre-intervention, postintervention and at follow-up. Participants were interviewed for their experience of the group and assessed for their ability to understand and engage with the basic concepts of mindfulness. Results: Participants reported a decrease in anxiety post-intervention which continued to decrease at follow-up five weeks after the final session of the mindfulness group. Selfreported depression also decreased post-intervention, however there was a slight increase at follow-up although this remained lower than baseline. The decrease in self-reported depression from pre-intervention to post-intervention was statistically significant. Participants were able to engage with, understand, enjoy and benefit from the mindfulness group and appreciated having the opportunity to meet with similar people with similar experiences. Conclusion: Results indicate that the mindfulness group had some positive effect on selfreported anxiety and depression states. Participant feedback coupled with the researcher’s own reflections offer direction for further adaptations that could be made to the mindfulness group and support the need for further research in this area.

Quinn, Hayley Danielle. "A Place to Call My Own: Understanding the Experience of Home for Young People with Disabilities Living in Long-Term Residential Care". Thesis, Griffith University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367867.

Texto completo
Resumen
This exploratory study was based on a new model of residential care that was designed specifically to provide a home-like environment to young people with severe disabilities and complex chronic healthcare needs (i.e., Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)) to allow them a more appropriate and dignified lifestyle. In 2006, there was an estimated 6,500 people with disabilities under 65 years of age living in residential aged care in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics; ABS, 2008). These living environments have been found to be inappropriate and inadequate for young people with disabilities (Cameron et al., 2001; Winkler et al., 2006), particularly given that they may not require 24-hour nursing care. It is important to consider the nature of home in more detail when thinking about living environments for marginalised groups of people (e.g. people with disabilities), especially as it has been found that the nature of home can impact on the quality of life (Annison, 2000). In order to understand the meaning of “home” for a group of people who live within a particular environment, it is essential that we seek to understand the perceptions of those individuals. In order to provide optimal services, the subjective experience needs to be heard and understood. The current research was conducted in accordance with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This method allowed the research to retain the voice of the service users at the forefront and ensured that their views remained paramount. Multiple domains of home, as they were experienced over time, were examined through a series of semi-structured personal interviews conducted with seven residents with either MS or ABI at their residential care setting. The study aimed to understand the residents’ ‘lived experience’ within the residential apartments, and specifically to answer the following questions: 1) How do residents experience home within a residential care setting? and; 2) What influences their sense of home? Two core themes emerged from the data, namely Perceived Qualities of Place and Identity. These themes seemed to be inextricably interlinked with each other, and to the extent that they overlapped, a sense of Home was created. These two core themes were influenced by a core process that took place for this group of residents, namely, Deconstruction and Reconstruction of their sense of home. The core process was influenced by the theme of Connections. Connections was constructed from three sub-themes: Interactions with the physical environment, Relationships with family and friends, and Relationships with staff. These themes influenced the way in which deconstruction and reconstruction occurred as well as the nature of identity and the perception of place. The current study produced four major findings. First, connections appeared to be paramount to the development of a sense of home having an influence in multiple ways. Although previous research has linked the importance of social relationships to general well-being and quality of life, the current study has found that these perceptions of relationships also impacted on the participants’ sense of home. Positive relationships, particularly with staff, created a sense of belonging and comfort that assisted in the reconstruction of their sense of home. Interactions between participants and family were especially critical to the participants’ sense of home. Second, the sense of home emerged as an important concept that is comparative, temporal, tenuous and vulnerable to deconstruction, and needs to be considered by service providers. Deconstruction appeared to take place more rapidly than reconstruction, highlighting the importance of prevention. Home was a vulnerable construct that could be easily destroyed through negative interactions with the physical environment and/or interactions with others. Third, the construct of home was intimately linked to the sense of identity. It is important for service providers to appreciate these linkages and respond accordingly. This type of information is rarely used in relation to the design and provision of services in environments that provide long-term care for young people with chronic and complex health needs. Finally, this study has built a theory that shows the link between the existing models of home proposed by Despres (1991). Although these models have been proposed as four distinct conceptual approaches to home, this study has highlighted that they do not operate in isolation. Instead, home is a multi-dimensional construct that is influenced by many factors. It can be influenced by connections, perceived qualities of place and identity. However, identity needs to be congruent with a sense of belonging. Identity needs to be a construct that becomes more focal in service delivery.

Resumen
Preliminary results from research show some promising results for the Sex Offender Treatment Services Collaborative – Intellectual Disability (SOTSEC-ID) treatment on offence recidivism. However, further research that explores the processes of behaviour change is required. This study answered the research question: What are the key mechanisms to therapeutic change in individuals with ID who have completed a sex offender treatment programme (SOTP)? A qualitative grounded theory methodology was used to understand the processes of change. A semi-structured interview was used with 12 participants. The results showed that relationship experience, acceptance of responsibility, being able to remember the details of the group, group processes, understanding their own risk and practical strategies were the key areas that are influential in the change process. Barriers to change were also highlighted. The study concluded that there are other factors such as group processes important in the process of change that influence behaviour change, other than the content of the treatment. Group treatment is supported for this population.

Resumen
Food choices, food purchases and convenience food preparation by a group of mildly intellectually handicapped students are investigated. These students attend John Grant High School, in Lachine, Quebec, for continued academic intervention and vocational training. Results indicate most of these young adults make food choices based on a desire for good nutrition. There is a significant correlation (p $<$ 0.05) between nutrition knowledge and choosing nutritious foods in this sample. Yet the knowledge needed to make sound food choices is insufficient, as is the knowledge of food marketing. Families are the major influence on food selection and preparation, but as a source of information are found to be lacking. At school, home economics contributed most to students' knowledge of foods. Students found food preparation instructions particularly difficult to follow; students who had repeatedly prepared foods had greater success in producing an acceptable outcome. For this population practice is needed in making optimal food choices, menu planning and food preparation.

Marquis, Ruth. "The meaning of quality in living service environments: An analysis of the experiences of people with disabilities, elderly people and service workers". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1998. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/976.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of the study was to examine the experiences of both people with disabilities and elderly people and to identify their perceptions of quality as it relates to living in a service or being supported by a service to live in the community. The study was naturalistic in design and used a phenomenological approach and inductive analysis. It involved immersion in living services for a two year period, in-depth interviews with people living and working in services and participant observation. Fifty service users between the ages of twenty-one and ninety-six, and twenty-six service workers between the ages of twenty-six and fifty-four were informants in the study. The study comprised of three phases, the first phase involved repeated in-depth interviews with service users in two disability and two aged care living services to examine the experiences of people living in services and their perceptions of quality. As a result of the consistency with which relationships with key staff members emerged in the context of quality experiences, selected service workers who were named by service users were also interviewed. The findings in this phase indicated that relationships experienced by service users in their encounters with service workers were more significant in service users' evaluation of quality than tangible acts of physical and environmental care. Relational experiences of people living in services were variable. Some informants experienced consistent validation and socio-emotional support, whilst others experienced role distancing and negative communication experiences. Service workers who were interviewed as a result of being identified by service users in the context of quality, attached importance to the relational domain in the acts and behaviours of providing a service. They also attached personal meaning to their roles as service workers and shared the view that their role as service worker was underpinned by an ethos of communality. The second phase of the study involved accessing another five disability and five aged care services to collect further data to support or refute the findings from phase one. As a result a large data bank was established to confirm the consistency with which relational experiences in living services were linked to perceptions of quality by both service users and service providers. Acts and behaviours which were consistently present in the context of quality were also identified and the need for emotional support in the living context was further confirmed. The third phase of the study involved an in-depth analysis and identification of commonly experienced categories of relationships between service users and workers. Relationships were categorised into ethical and technical living service experiences and exemplars used to illustrate findings. Data analysis indicated that service experiences lie on a continuum, with mutually supportive relationships between service users and workers at one end, and physical and psychological abuse at the other. Experiences were variable in singular service contexts. This highlighted the individual nature of service relationships between service users and workers and the need to articulate human service as relationship. It also highlighted the inadequacies of using standard measures to evaluate quality in living services.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine the therapeutic effectiveness of group counseling with visually-impaired elderly adults, and (b) to provide information concerning the effectiveness of group counseling to practitioners in the field. The study reviewed the literature regarding aging and vision, psychosocial reactions to vision loss, and group counseling with the visually-impaired and the elderly. Twenty subjects, who were above age 65 and had recently experienced a severe loss of vision, were selected to participate in the study. Ten subjects were assigned to an experimental counseling group and 10 subjects were assigned to a no-treatment control group. The experimental group participated in 1-1/2 hour group sessions once a week for 10 weeks. Both the experimental group and the control subjects were administered pre- and post-tests. The tests measured depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.

Resumen
This study investigated the reported benefits of adolescent students with an intellectual disability as tutors or teacher assistants in physical education. The personal experience and meaning of five young leaders with an intellectual disability was reported by means of an interview, video activity, picture activity, and field observations. An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used. The analysis revealed different combinations of benefits for each participant. All participants expressed positive affects from helping. Four participants identified pride and accomplishment and connectedness. Three participants demonstrated career ambitions and self-identity. Two participants addressed responsibility towards others, being a role model, and modification of behavior. One student addressed altruism as a benefit. The young leaders' experiences were discussed in terms of their roles (Allen & Feldman, 1976), role theory (Thomas & Biddle, 1966), previous tutoring literature, and Hellison's responsibility model (2003).

Resumen
When strangers meet, there is a high level of uncertainty due to the infinite number of possible alternatives in behavior between the two people. Previous research indicates that communicators will attempt to reduce the level of uncertainty by using available verbal and nonverbal information of the other, by seeking similarities with the other, and by observing the situation itself. This information is used to predict attitudes and beliefs, as well as to attribute characteristics of the other. Other studies indicate that a person will increase her level of self-monitoring activity when the level of uncertainty is increased.

Resumen
This study investigated a process for identifying the reasons why a person with an intellectual disability has problem behaviors. This process is called a trial-based functional analysis (TBFA). The researchers wanted to know if a person who was not an expert behavior analyst could be trained to perform the TBFA and if the results obtained from the TBFA could be used to create a program to reduce the problem behavior of a person with an intellectual disability living in a community-based group home for persons with disabilities. The results of this study show that a person who is not an expert behavior analyst can be trained to perform a TBFA and that the results obtained from the TBFA were useful in creating a program to reduce the problem behavior of an adult male person living in a rural area in Utah.

Parry, Melissa Louise. "An exploratory study of the incorporation of their 'future-self' as part of transition preparation in to and out of further education for young people with learning disabilities". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/24045.

Resumen
This research explored the perception of the incorporation of ‘future-self’ for young people (YP) moving from specialist provision for children where the Local Authority have identified the provision as Moderate Learning Difficulties and additional needs, their parent/carers views, and the perspectives of professionals supporting their transition to mainstream further education. The ‘future-self’ approach had its basis in social cognitive theory, as the creation of imagined ‘future-selves’ is thought to influence an individual’s behaviour to aid them to work towards their aspired self (Baker, 2015; Markus & Nurius, 1986; Oysterman & James, 2011). Phase one used a case study methodology using semi-structured interviews to explore the YP and their parent/carer’s experience of transition planning having included the young person’s vision of their ‘future-self’, at aged 16. Materials were designed to aid their understanding using visual support. Phase two gained the views of YP using focus groups as they approach transition out of FE at aged 19 or older into continued training, employment, and on towards adulthood, in relation to inclusion of their vision of their ‘future-self’ in this preparation. This phase also explored the perceptions of the professionals for incorporating the young person’s view of their ‘future-self’ using semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six stage thematic analysis to identify themes in the data. Focus groups were thematically analysed using Ritchie and Spencer’s (1994) five stage analysis. A number of themes were found for the YP at both stages, the parents/carers and the professionals. Findings indicated that the YP are more involved in the transition planning and a range of methods are applied to prepare the YP however there are a number of barriers still limiting the options for the YP such as: lack of choice available, protectiveness of others, low aspirations, failure to explore holistic longer term outcomes, insufficient multi-agency involvement, overreliance on parents, and the need for more effective strategic planning and awareness of the systems around the YP. The findings from this research indicate that applying a ‘future-selves’ approach for YP as a method to generate future aspirations to motivate YP’s behaviour has been effective as a tool to add to existing transition preparations. This could act as a way to overcome the currently existing poorer long term outcomes for YP with this population. Based upon this small scale project, further investigation would be required to assess the benefit for a wider population.

Resumen
In Sweden there is a limited research about adults with intellectual disabilities and their sexuality through a social work perspective. This study aims to study how workers in group homes and their managers describes the residents sexuality and describes how they approaches their sexuality at work. And if there’s any facilities or hindrance that affects the sexual space. 5 semi-structured interviews with managers and coordinators, and 3 focus groups with carers where made. For analysis script theory and the charmed circle have been used. The result shows that people who works at group homes has no guidance or collective ways to approach sexuality in their work. They talk about an open approach but often describes the residents as asexual and connects sexuality with the level of disabilities. The respondents acknowledge that they need more knowledge. The conclusion is that there’s a need for more knowledge and guidance for people who work at group homes to extend the space for sexuality for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Background: People with disability report a lower level of social participation than others. Getting support through the Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS) lead to a dependency towards the support-staff. The Involvement Model is meant to increase the level of involvement among people with disabilities, with the guidance from trained facilitators. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how the experience from being a facilitator in The Involvement Model have come into use in the support- staff’s ordinary occupation in-group homes. Methods: A qualitative interview with an inductive approach was used. There were six participants in the study, one male and five female. All of them where support-staff in-group homes. Apart from the variation in gender, there was also a difference in age, level of education and professional experience among the participants. Results: The participants reported that their role as a facilitator had led to awareness about how values and attitudes effect the involvement among people with disabilities. The participants describe their experience as professional development. They also report that they see their occupation from a new perspective and have realized their role in facilitating involvement for people with disabilities. Conclusions: This study has showed that the experience the support-staff gained, through the facilitator-education, led to an awareness about their role in empowering involvement. They also reported an increased meaning and understanding in their professional role. This study can also contribute to show the complexity of the support-staffs role.

White, CATHERINE. "RECOVERY AS A GUIDE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT IN GROUP HOMES FOR PEOPLE WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS: A SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL APPROACH". Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/7839.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: As the paradigm underlying mental health care slowly shifts from an approach primarily institutional and medical in its orientation toward one more community-based and recovery-oriented, housing needs have come to the forefront. Many people with persistent mental illness accept group home living situations that do not necessarily meet their needs, and do not align with the recovery vision. Research focused on recovery for residents of group homes is all but absent in the literature. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges and opportunities for enabling group homes to increase their capacity to serve as an environment that integrates the recovery vision. Method: Using ethnographic methods, this case study examined the cultural milieu of a group home, how recovery is understood within the setting, and the impact of policies and practices on enacting the recovery vision. By converging multiple strategies for data collection (participant observation, key informant interviews, and document analysis), a multi-level perspective was achieved. The use of the social-ecological model, with its attention to multiple levels of influence, emerged as a highly relevant perspective, without which the recovery vision cannot be realized. Findings: The culture within the home revealed a comfortable atmosphere, basic needs being met, access to planned and unplanned activity, and caring relationships with staff, which contribute to a place attachment that could be difficult to loosen. There is a lack of awareness of recovery-enabling practice at multiple levels, which emerged as a key challenge to its implementation. Although some policies at the government level support self-sufficiency as an important objective, others make progress towards this ideal difficult, if not impossible, such as those related to funding. The focus on enhancing well-being in the day-to-day setting subsumes the growth goals associated with recovery. Conclusion: Integrating the recovery vision within group home could benefit from confronting well-established approaches, embracing advocacy roles, and addressing mechanisms for change at multiple levels. Only then will people with mental illness living in group homes reap the benefits of social justice, social inclusion and full citizenship that come with recovery.

This study is trying to understand how six the mild intelligent disabilities can be affected on their self concept as well as evaluate how much their self concept can be advanced by learning group of role model. Life stories of eight successful cases of people with intelligent disabilities were introduced and ten lessons of learning group of role model were conducted. TSCS:2, group learning evaluation checklist, and relevant worksheets have been applied. Through the study, we found: 1. Lessons of learning group of role model do help advance the self concept of the mild intelligent disabilities, especially at the three dimensions of PER, IDN,and SAT. 2. Members of the group show affirmative and satisfaction toward the lessons while at the same time suggest some corrections to three other subject-interest study, self-concept, and drama experience. Finally, according to the study result, researchers would suggest enrich the content of lessons, increase meetings of group lessons, and adjust cycles of lessons.

School leavers with intellectual disabilities (ID) often face difficulties in making a smooth transition from school to college, employment or more broadly to adult life. The transition phase is traumatic for the young person with ID and their families as it often results in the loss of friendships, relationships and social networks. The aim of this study was to explore the family carers' views and experiences on transition from school to college or to adult life with special reference to ethnicity. Forty-three families (consisting of 16 White British, 24 Pakistani, 2 Bangladeshi and one Black African) were interviewed twice using a semi-structured interview schedule. The carers were interviewed twice, Time 1 (T1) and Time 2 (T2), T2 being a year later to observe any changes during transition. The findings indicate that although transition planning occurred it was relatively later in the young person's school life. Parents were often confused about the process and had limited information about future options for their son or daughter. All family carers regardless of ethnicity, reported lack of information about services and expressed a sense of being excluded. South Asian families experienced more problems related to language, information about services, culture and religion. The majority of families lacked knowledge and awareness of formal services and the transition process. Socio-economic status, high levels of unemployment and caring for a child with a disability accounted for similar family experiences, regardless of ethnic background. The three key areas relevant for ethnicity are interdependence, religion and assumptions by service providers.

Chan, Helen G. "Conceptualising social capital : case studies of social capital inputs into housing". Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/15187.

Texto completo
Resumen
Social capital refers to material and symbolic resources that are accessed through social relationships and used for purposive actions. Conceptualising social capital as having four archetypal forms provides planners with an analytic and heuristic tool for considering the different resources that community and government actors bring to various projects and social endeavours. These forms of social capital are called bonding social capital (based on intra-community relationships), bridging social capital (based on extra-community relationships), institutional social capital (based on relationships established by the formal and informal institutions of society) and synergistic social capital (based on relationships between state and civil society actors). This quadripartite model of social capital was found to be useful in analysing the different socially embedded resources which were applied to housing initiatives for two distinct communities of people in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One case looked at a seniors care home established for elderly Chinese people by a community-based organisation (CBO) known as the United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society (S.U.C.C.E.S.S.). The second case examined community housing for adults with developmental disabilities that was supported directly by family members and a CBO called Mainstream Association for Proactive Community Living (MAPCL) and indirectly by an informal group known as the Parents Support Group for Families of Mentally Handicapped Adults. In both cases, the housing initiative relied on resources that were accessed through the intra-community ties of people united by a common ethnicity or interest in supporting adults with developmental disabilities. Necessary inputs for developing and sustaining the housing initiatives were also found in extra-community ties with the wider community and internationally-based professional associations; relationships with government actors at the municipal, provincial and federal levels; and predictable societal relationships established by legislation and norms of behaviour. A four-part model of social capital additionally serves as a planning tool to identify a broader range of resources and possibilities for policy intervention and to remind planners they work with multiple publics, must adopt a critical approach to community involvement and coproduction and should encourage governments to be active in shaping the institutional environment and engaging with individuals and community groups.

Resumen
This research study employs explorative and descriptive qualitative research conducted in a naturalistic environment to identify factors that drive children from their homes to the streets of Bulawayo city suburban in Zimbabwe. The research study answers the question: How do children`s experiences drive them from their homes and why do they decide to live on the streets of Bulawayo city centre? Literature search was conducted after data collection to confirm findings. Data collection was conducted at Thuthuka Street Children`s project where an increase in the number of registered street children has been observed. Purposive sample selection of street children was conducted. Selection criteria was based on the participant being registered with Thuthuka Street Children`s Project, for one year being on and off the streets and volunteer to participate. Ethical consideration such as fairness justice and honest were observed. Soundness to establish trustworthiness rather than validity, the following alternative constructs were applied, credibility, transferability, dependability, conformability and authenticity. Focus group discussions using a guide with open-ended questions were conducted to collect data from 12 street children, which was then analysed by coding into themes, notably forms of abuse such as emotional, physical, and sexual and neglect, poverty, deviant behaviour and future plans. Children went onto the streets because they suffered abuse, and/or wanted freedom without parental dominance and to acquire fast riches in the streets. Based on the conclusions, the research makes recommendations from the participants and the researcher to policymakers, non-governmental organisations, parents and social workers, to address this deep-seated problem.
