This study was to compare the levels of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) between Canadian and Guatemalan adolescents, and to examine associations of sociodemographic variables with PA and screen time among adolescents in Canada and Guatemala. Self-reported, cross-sectional data from students in grades 9–12 who participated in the 2015 COMPASS study (Canada; n = 39,817; mean age = 15.6 years) and COMPASS-Guatemala ( n = 1,221; mean age = 15.1 years) were used. Sociodemographic variables included age, gender, ethnicity (exclusively among Canadians), and weekly money allowance.

This study explores barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening among indigenous Maya women in Guatemala. Eight weeks of observation, active participation, informal interviews, and semistructured interviews with community organizers were analyzed using Leininger's 4-phase process to elucidate five themes: fear/shame, “machismo,” education/experience, cost, and self-love. Results suggest sustainable cervical cancer screening may be possible through cultural humility, collaboration, balance of power, and emancipatory praxis.

High-impact practices (HIPs) in higher education, such as global community engagement programs, enhance student learning and lead to increased levels of civic involvement among graduates. However, it is unknown if participation in a global community engagement/service-learning program affects the development of cultural competence. The purpose of this study was to determine if student and faculty participation in a two-week community engagement/service-learning program in Guatemala would result in intercultural development measured using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) tool. El Salvador remains one of the most violent countries in the world undergoing a murder epidemic. The blatant rise in social violence is driven mainly by gangs of the Northern Triangle countries (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador), which frequently clash with governmental security forces. The situation legally blurred the lines between the law enforcement and armed conflict regimes. An insufficient amount of time has been dedicated to identifying the applicable international legal framework to El Salvador’s extreme gang violence and its repression. Consequently, the country’s categorization o

Abstract Carrying out jadeitite diagenesis in its basic state as well as in combination with the multiple fluid activities of water, we focused on jadeite grains in production areas such as Myanmar, Guatemala and Russia to determinethe essence of nominal anhydrous jadeite grains and the distribution of structural hydroxyl in individual jadeite grains via infrared microscope. This is a scientific problem that urgently needs to be solved. The results show that a microscale of structural water in the form of structural hydroxyl is widely found in the jadeite grains of primary jadeitite in Myanmar

Abstract Objectives Length at 2y of age is a strong indicator of adult height and potential for other adverse effects in adulthood; leg length (LL) is suggested to be the more nutritionally responsive component of height. These analyses examine body proportions- measured as linear crown rump length (CRL), LL, and CRL: LL- among 24 mo old children from four low- and middle-income settings with high stunting rates (average across 4 sites = 65%) participating in the Women First Preconception Maternal Nutrition Trial (WF). The deterioration or absence of plaster walls in houses and poor hygienic conditions are the most important risk factors for indoor Triatoma dimidiata infestation in Guatemala. A cross-disciplinary study was conducted addressing T. dimidiata infestation, household hygiene, and housing construction. The study focused on local materials and cultural aspects (including gender roles) that could lead to long-term improvements in wall construction. A new plaster mix for walls was developed on the basis of laboratory studies on construction materials recommended by local villagers. Four villages with

Children's participation and supplement intake patterns in an eight-year, community-based intervention trial in Guatemala are presented. Participation rates were between 65% and 85%, with few differences by village (N = 4) or child age (0–7 years). The percentage of days of attendance at the supplementation centre and the volume of supplement consumed, however, were significantly higher in villages that were given atole for children under flour years old.
