Resumen
We numerically investigate the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs) by taking into account its band structure. By use of the recursive Green's function method, we found the formation of the π junction in the case of the fully spin-polarized FI (FPFI), e.g., La 2 BaCuO 5. Moreover, the 0-π transition is induced by increasing the thickness of FPFI. On the other hand, Josephson current through the Eu chalcogenides shows the π junction behavior in the case of the strong d-f hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electrons of Eu . We have studied the vortex dynamics in intrinsic Josephson junctions in mesa-shaped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O y single crystals. By applying magnetic fields parallel to the copper oxide layers of the junctions, Josephson vortex-flow branches were observed in addition to multiple resistive branches on the I–V characteristics. From the field dependence of the maximum flow voltage, the flow velocity of the vortices was estimated to be ~3×106 m/s at 4.2 K, which is close to that of the highest-velocity mode of the electromagnetic wave in them. On the other hand, at 77 K, the velocity decreased from the h

We theoretically study classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ( YBCO ) Josephson junction coupled with an LC circuit. The TA and MQT escape rate are calculated by taking into account the two-dimensional nature of the classical and quantum phase dynamics. We find that the MQT escape rate is largely suppressed by the coupling to the LC circuit. On the other hand, this coupling leads to the slight reduction of the TA escape rate. These results are relevant for the interpretation of a recent experiment on the MQT and TA phenomena in YBCO bi-

Researches on the fabrication of ~ 0.1 × 0.1 μ m 2 superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions are reviewed. Today, a typical dimension is 1–10 μm for Josephson junctions in superconducting integrated circuits. These Josephson junctions are defined by well-established photolithographic technology with reactive ion etching (RIE), and for the superconductor, Nb is almost always used. The merits of Nb include the facts that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of Nb (9.2 K ) is higher than the boiling point of He (4.2 K ), and that Nb has excellent stability against

Abstract Gauge-invariant phase difference and critical currents of cross-type Josephson junctions with thin and narrow superconducting strips exposed to three-dimensional magnetic fields are theoretically investigated. When a sandwich-type Josephson junction in the xy plane is exposed to parallel magnetic fields H x and H y , the phase difference linearly depends on the spatial coordinates, x and y, and the critical currents exhibit the standard Fraunhofer-type magnetic interference. The perpendicular field H z , on the other hand, nonlinearly modulates the distribution of the phase difference

The possibility of current-carrying ground states due to the Aharonov-Casher and the Aharonov-Bohm effect in mesoscopic and macroscopic systems is discussed in detail. In mesoscopic metal rings, the interplay between the two effects is not separable, and the spontaneous spin currents via the Aharonov-Casher effect are dominated by the charge currents due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. In an annulus-shaped Josephson junction array, on the other hand, only the Aharonov-Casher effect comes in; the corresponding vortex current generates a spontaneous voltage across the annulus, which appears to be o

This article examines how Scientific American portrayed laureates in order to identify and explain core features of Nobel fame. It examines the portrayals of seven laureates – Francis Crick, Linus Pauling, Hans Bethe, Murray Gell-Mann, Brian Josephson, Philip Anderson and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar – in magazine profiles written between 1992 and 1995 by science writer John Horgan. Quantum tunneling, wherein a quanject has a non-zero probability of tunneling into and then exiting a barrier of finite width and height, is the subject of Chapter 13. The description for the one-dimensional case is extended to the barrier being inverted, which forms an attractive potential well. The first application of this analysis is to the emission of alpha particles from the decay of radioactive nuclei, where the alpha-nucleus attraction is modeled by a potential well and the barrier is the repulsive Coulomb potential. Excellent results are obtained. Ditto for the similar analysis of pro

Abstract The strength of the coupling between an atom and a single electromagnetic field mode is defined as the ratio of the vacuum Rabi frequency to the Larmor frequency, and is determined by a small dimensionless physical constant, the fine structure constant $$\alpha =Z_{vac} / 2R_{K}$$. On the other hand, the quantum circuit including Josephson junctions behaving as artificial atoms and it can be coupled to the electromagnetic field with arbitrary strength (Devoret et al. 2007). One of the most spectacular manifestations of quantum mechanics is tunneling between closely spaced conductors. The DC I-V characteristics in different types of tunnel junctions, such as metal-vacuum-metal junctions (MVM), metal-insulator-metal junctions (MIM), Josephson junctions, and quantum point contacts in a two dimensional electron gas, are well understood. High frequency transport in these systems is much less understood, and has been the subject of intense research in recent years[1,2].

The 10th North American Josephson voltage standard (JVS) interlaboratory comparison (ILC) at 10 V was completed in 2014. This year’s ILC was unique as it consisted of 2 parts. An on-site comparison was conducted between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) compact JVS and the pivot laboratory’s conventional JVS (CJVS) system. A set of four traveling Zener voltage standards then served to transfer traceability from the pivot laboratory to the 12 other participants. The International System of Units (SI), which provides the basis for all physical measurements, is due to be revised in 2018. The current system, defined by seven base units, will be replaced by a "New SI" where all units are defined in terms of a set of seven reference constants, to be known as the "defining constants of the SI". The aim is to provide a simpler and more fundamental definition of the entire SI, which will also dispense with the last of the definitions based on a material artifact • the international prototype kilogram. In the new SI the kilogram will be defined in terms of a f
