Active seismicity and volcanism north of Washington state’s Mount St. Helens provide key ingredients for hydrothermal circulation at depth. This broad zone of seismicity defines the St. Helens Seismic Zone, which extends well north of the volcanic edifice below where several faults and associated fractures in outcrop record repeated slip, dilation, and alteration indicative of localized fluid flow. Candidate reservoir rocks for a geothermal system include marine metasediments overlain by extrusive volcanics. The colocation of elements comprising a geothermal system at this location is tested here by analysis of the structures potentially hosting a reservoir, their relationship to the modern stress state, and temperature logs to a depth of 250 m. Outcrop mapping and borehole image log analysis down to 244 m document highly fractured volcaniclastic deposits and basalt flows. Intervening ash layers truncate the vertical extent of most structures. However, large strike slip faults with well-developed fault cores and associated high fracture density cross ash layers; vein filling and alternation of the adjacent host rock in these faults suggest they act as vertically extensive flow paths. These faults and associated fractures record repeated slip, dilation, and healing by various dolomite, quartz, and hematite, as well as clay alteration, indicative of long-lived, localized fluid flow. In addition, where these rocks are altered by igneous intrusion, they host high fracture density that facilitated heat transfer evidenced by associated hydrothermal alteration. Breakouts in image logs indicate the azimuth of SHmax in the shear zone is broadly consistent with both the GPS plate convergence velocity field as well as seismically active strike slip faults and strike-slip faults mapped in outcrop and borehole image logs. However, the local orientation of SHmax varies by position relative to the edifice and in some cases with depth along the borehole making a simple regional average SHmax azimuth misleading. Boreholes within the seismic zone display a wider variety of fracture attitudes than those outside the shear zone, potentially promoting permeability. Temperature profiles in these wells all indicate isothermal conditions at average groundwater temperatures, consistent with rapidly flowing water localized within fractures. Together, these results indicate that the area north of Mount Saint Helens generates and maintains porosity and permeability suggesting that conditions necessary for a geothermal system are present, although as yet no modern heat source or hydrothermal circulation was detected at shallow depth.

Texto completoDifferent models have been proposed for the "drumbeat" earthquakes that accompanied recent eruptive behavior at Mount St. Helens. Debate continues as to whether seismicity is related to brittle failure during the extrusion of solid dacite spines or is the result of hydrothermal fluids interacting with a crack buried in the volcanic edifice. My model predictions of steady-state conduit flow confirm the strong control that degassing exerts on eruptive behavior. I discuss the necessary role of degassing for extruded material to attain the high density (low vesicularity) of the observed spine material and discuss the implications for generating seismicity. A brittle-failure source of seismicity requires that the gouge elastic properties accommodate some strain, since the magma compressibility in the upper conduit is too low to do so on its own. I also report on a novel method for generating high-resolution digital elevation models of fault surface textures.

This research, linked to on line literature and history, aims to highlight the presence of Christian moral values present in the work Helena by Machado de Assis. Through the Theory of Residuality, we intend to demonstrate the cultural, ideological and hysterical received by our people, especially when it concerns me to Roman Catholic beliefs. However, we intend to prove these manifestations are remnants of the medieval mindset of the thirteenth century. Submitted by waste, that mentality led to a hybrid imagery that colonized the moral thinking of our country. It is also our intention to prove that the novel Helena highlights the virtues of the characters of the plot, as a way of perpetuating these moral values. Finally, emphasizing the behavior of the protagonist Helen, as an example of dignity unblemished.

Texto completoThe present Dissertation aims to understand the many representations of the mythic character Helen, as they have been elaborated by the tragedian Euripides. Selected as sources for this research, three tragedies shall be analysed in our work: The Trojan Women (415 AD), Orestes (408 AD) , and Helen (412 AD). Whenever it may come necessary, we will use the other tragedies as supporting documents to the subject we are attending to endorse, for which we may appeal also to the works of Homer, Hesiod and the sophist Gorgias of Leontini, as well as the plays of other great tragedians from the Classical Athens, Aeschylus and Sophocles. By the utilization of the concept representation , which have been largely discussed by most historians in the last decades of 20th century, we will be intending to make an association between representation and other common concepts used by the New Social History, such as memory and mythology. This is due to the multiple understanding we can achieve over the character Helen as a mytheme as it is presented both in narrative and interpretations in the Greek mythological system as it was known in the Classical Athens. The image of Helen was reinterpreted by Euripides tragedy, mainly because Helen s Pan-Hellenic characteristics, which were determinant for the tragedian s work as a ideal condition guaranteed by its eminent poetic/narrative style. By reinventing his Helens, Euripides has increased through the tragic mimesis a particular representation which was intertwined with the mythic traditions and the poetical and philosophical view of his contemporaries.

Abstract : The present research proposes a reading of the character Helena Morley, the literary work of Minha Vida de Menina, and its salient features a female character of the nineteenth century. The girl's diary, written during the years 1893 to 1895, open discussions on women's writing in a time when women did not have access to education, but many wrote and introduced very critical sense. Because it is a girl ahead of its time, that unlike most women, speaks her mind, criticizes what she does not consider correct, the work attracted the interest of filmmaker Helena Solberg, who in 2004 produced the adaptation Vida de Menina. Speaking at adapting many discussions are raised. Virginia Woolf criticizes the adaptation because it considers inferior to literary work, as Robert Stam argues that even if below the literature, because it is a chronological issue, adapting always bring benefits to the book, among them, will complement it by making to make it better known to viewers / readers. The reason for the work to be written by a woman and the movie produced by filmmakers (also women), the issue of feminism is discussed, in which there was no intention to question whether feminist in both works, or if the question of authorship was reason for such classification. However, throughout the work, realizes the weakness of man before some women, the woman who has opinions and wants, the absence of a villain and a protagonist who struggles to finish everything well, differentiating Vida de Menina of the traditional cinema.

Helena Kolody, carbon & diamond - an illustrated biography tells the life of Helena Kolody, from her very insertion in literature, as it questions her identity, the world surrounding her, and the meaning of her existence. That is equivalent to saying that in her poetry there is the intermingling of reflections and feelings that derive from personal and localized material. From the railroad station to the tube-shaped bus stops; from Ukraine to downtown Curitiba; from Paisagem interior to Reika; from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century, Helena Kolody's literature guarantees her presence in the consolidation of the art/life binomial. The portrait of the author ends up by also being made up of an abundant iconographic apparatus, of the over five hundred critical texts listed, and of her complete work. The person, although deliberately accepting her own fragmentation, reveals herself in her entireness.

This study it will deal with the analysis of the poetical workmanship, in the here present case, the sonets, of the poet Luiz Delfino dos Santos who, although been born in Desterro, current Florianópolis, most of its life in Rio de Janeiro lived, where if it formed doctor, was senator of the Republic and wrote its poems. After the reading of its poetical one, in we consider them to analyze the following subjects gifts in its workmanship: the erotism and the sensuality in a poem series where Delfino even celebrates the body of the woman in its closer parts; the moments where the I-poetical one is felt magic for certain parts of the body, as the feet, the hands and the hair of the loved one, as well as, poems where the woman reveals greater it; we also think the sacred and the profane , over all in poems where in Adão and Eva they appear as poetical figures; the crucification and death of Jesus Christ and the belief in the existence of God; we also analyze references to mythology, through the allusion gods and goddesses of the mythology Greek/Roman, that are compared the Helena/Eugênia. Subjects that in had taken them to perceive that Luiz Delfino was intertextual poet who to get involved for all these ways.

Texto completoThe transposable elements (TEs) are DNA sequences capable of catalyze its own movement and to enter into new regions of the genome. In the present study we studied Helena, a LINE element that is at different stages of its evolutionary cycle and therefore, it is a good model for studies of TEs evolutionary dynamics. Through bioinformatics analysis of 12 Drosophila species which have their genomes sequenced, we found Helena in different stages of its evolutionary cycle, that varies of at least one full active copy (D. mojavensis) an putatively complete copy, but inactive (D. simulans) to highly degenerate (D. yakuba, D. erecta, D. ananassae and D. virilis) or absent (D. pseudoobscura, D. persimilis, D. willistoni and D. grimshawi) sequences. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Helena was present in the common ancestor of the Drosophila genus and has been vertically transmitted in derived lineages, but lost on some of them. Since a complete highly active copy was observed only in D. mojavensis, we studied in more detail its 5' end region. We used a reporter gene and verified the presence of internal promoter for Pol II that is associated with epigenetic histone modifications for permissive (H3K4me2) and repressive heterochromatin (H3K27me3). These “bivalent marks” indicate that Helena can be expressed in response to specific stimulus. A study of BS element, a TE closely related to Helena, showed that the evolutionary dynamics of both TEs are very similar. Bioinformatics analysis of the 12 Drosophila genomes revealed that BS is also widely variable in the species analyzed regarding to distribution, abundance, degree of degradation and also about their evolutionary cycle

Texto completoHelena is the romance of perishable and discontinuous title character denominator of a dialectic that does not consume and build the narrative by sequential fragmentation combined with episodic frame. The novel is a lightning stroke to the romantic literary project. Therefore, this study aims to find "objective" elements of the novel that would constitute a conception of literary nation proposed by Machado de Assis, as in classical writing, where women are engaged as a metaphor for the nation by a non-cultural heroism, as the example of the Greek myth of Helena, where the feminine represents a mythical image of the nation. The paper's theoretical conception of the history of Walter Benjamin, that is, that is constructed as an allegorical appeal, the conclusions about the disciplinary society of nineteenth century of Michel Foucault, the construction of the nation as a subtle game to remember and forget of Wander Miranda and the rhetoric of death and loss reflected in the speeches of the cultural heritage of Jos? Reginaldo Santos Gon?alves, which allow you to analyze the work permeated by subjectivity and existential conflicts by Machado, who has it arranged in dialectic with the avant-garde literary romanticism and realism. In this relationship with the Greek myth of Helen, explained that characters with the nickname of Helena in Machado's work are not uncommon. As in classical Helena, Machado s Helena uses three rhetorical are the cause of the seizure of the nation. In this game of remembering and forgetting, in the daily plebiscite, Machado draw ideal images that forged our mythical past and commitment to the future. The suffering love of Helena is suffering from failure of the nation which would have led the author to the use of allegorical language, seeking a balance in the chaos generated by the opposition between cruelty and pity widespread view in an area where only left the character's confession guilt for the death. It is a simulacrum of unfinished nation, the space for the game of remembering and forgetting, while the rhetoric of negotiation of our Brazilianness

Texto completoHelena Valentí, writer and translator studies Helena Valentí’s writing and translating work. The main aim of this thesis is to rekindle the memory of Helena Valentí. Therefore, the first part comprises her biography, which examines her family origins, her childhood, her adolescence, her youth at university, her summers in Coll de Poses, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Cadaqués, her voluntary exile in England, her return to Catalonia in the winter of 1974 and the final stage of her life in Barcelona, until her death in 1990. More specifically, we have sought to place her work in the genealogy of the Catalan women writing and translating in the 20th century; we have studied and analysed her writing and translating work; we have also examined Katherine Mansfield’s influence on Valenti's unpublished play K.M.: La felicitat i altres històries; finally, we have compiled, ordered and classified her document archive, which was made available by her family. The second part of our thesis focuses on the analysis of her narrative work, which includes her fictional influences and bonds with other writers, her subjects, her symbols and her perspective on writing itself. The third part deals with her numerous translations into Spanish and Catalan in order to define the boundaries between professional and vocational translation. An important aspect of this last part is Katherine Mansfield’s influence on her work and the study of her unpublished play K.M.: La felicitat i altres històries. Finally we have attached an inventory of her document archive in the annexes, some sample photos of her bibliographic archive, most of the emails that we have sent to Valentí’s friends and acquaintances and the play mentioned above. Due to the lack of academic work about Helena Valentí, this thesis seeks to fill an evident bibliographic vacuum.
