Texto completoThe Histoire des Albigeois (The Albigesian History), better known as the prosification of the Chanson de la croisade contres les Albigeois, is a text ignored by the literary criticism. The text, in its Version 1 (known before as Version L), which is the subject of this dissertation, was transmitted by three manuscripts between the 16th and 17th centuries. These are: P (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, fr. 4975), C (Carpentras, Bibliothèque Municipale Inguimbertine, 1829) with the same gap of the precedent codex, and T (Toulouse, Bibliothèque Municipale de Toulouse, ms. 608), the only complete manuscript. In addition, there is also the Rédaction 2, transmitted by the manuscript marked Me and preserved in the Merville’s château. This latter version was edited by Dirk Hoekstra in 1998. The Version 1, in turn, collects two sub-versions: the first one is Version 1 Long (P, C), from which the second one derives, i.e. Version 1 Short (T), that considerably shortens the text, by removing the repetitions (subjects, adjectives etc.) but preserving every element necessary for the storytelling. The Histoire‘s language is the XV century occitan, far from the Troubabours’ language of the 12th and 13th centuries and displaying some Latin and French influences. The origin of the text is to be located in the East Languedoc, especially the East Toulousain, Quercy, Rouergue, Albigeois and Hérault. In addition, the text offers others linguistics elementes, related to Eastern Alps and Spain. The Latin influence, the quote from the Codex Iuris Civilis, the intellectual context depicted by the jurists of the Toulouse’s parliament, the information purpose: these are the elements that lead us to consider the Histoire a book of history written by an anonymous author for his contemporaries. In this book, all main characters (crusaders, southern allies and clerics) are judged the same positive way, with the only exception of Folquet de Marseille, bishop of Toulouse, represented in a negative way

Texto completoThe albigensian movement was a Christian heresy which arose in southern France in the High Middle Ages and disappeared in the fourteenth century. However, during the sixteenth century, this heresy was generally considered as the forerunner of French Protestantism. At that time, the Catholics and the Protestants were antagonistic in regards to almost every topic, but strangely they held identical views towards the “genealogy” between the albigensians and the Protestants. This phenomenon is closely related to the political and religious situation and the polemical strategies of the two sides in France since the Reformation. The Catholics are inspired by the albigensian crusade to eliminate the heretics. As for the Protestants, on one hand, the albigensians’ persecution facilitates reflection on their own experience; on the other hand, it provides an opportunity for them to turn adversity and defeat into victory in the conflict with the Catholics. Since then, the albigensian history is integrated into the history of the French protestant church. But, this genealogy, although it is widely spread, could not continue to be taken in History, because it is after all an imagination

Texto completoThe albigeois region provides a privileged field of observation for certain mediaeval structural phenomena. After the economic growth, having developed gradually and inconspicuously, which began during the viith century, the feudal system took hold in the region, between 980 and 1070, through a rapid and profound mutation. The gregorian reform seems to be one of the effects of this change. The town appears as an organic element of the feudal system, a complement to the countryside, and very dependent upon it for its economic vitality. A sign of this is the fact that the building of cathedrals in southern france was financed by rural lithes. The evolution of the feudal system brought with it social imbalance, accompanied by the rise of catharism, which however was limited to knights and to the urban elites. Neither popular nor national, it disappeared, largely due to the spiritual conquest carried out by the mendicant orders. The toulousan gothic style, of which albi cathedral is the finest example, constituted one of the ways of reacting against the heresy. The economic subordination of town to country, and the unstable and shrinking nature of the urban population from 1320 onwards, contributed to albi's association with the monarchie regime, the cultural models of which inspired the interior decoration of the cathedral
Cantalupi, Cecilia. "Une nouvelle édition critique du troubadour Guilhem Figueira". Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PSLEP015.
Texto completoThe thesis proposes a new critical edition of the lyric production by Guilhem Figueira (BdT 217), who was born in Toulouse and active during the first half of the XIIIth century, mainly in Northern Italy. Figueira’s corpus is representative of the historical and cultural climate in Toulouse during the Albigensian crusade; he was himself a protagonist of the diaspora of poets and intellectuals and a member of an ideal circle of Friderician troubadours. He left a love song, two sirventes against the papacy and the false clergy, two sirventes for Frederic II and two crusade songs. He also exchanged two coblas and one tenson with Aimeric de Peguilhan (BdT 10). In comparison with the critical edition by Emil Levy (1880), we have included an anonymous cobla esparsa against Sordel (BdT 437), preserved by the chansonnier P; on the other hand, we have decided not to accept two other poems assigned to him by a2. The thesis opens with a study of the tradition, which today includes five new witnesses, with an update of the bibliography; we have provided a study of themes, metric and language of Figueira, an Italian translation and a punctual commentary of the poems; a complete glossary and two appendices (the edition of sirventes BdT 217.4a, which we considered inauthentic but helpful to the correct interpretation of another poem; and the first results of a research on Emil Levy editor of troubadours, with the edition of nine letters he sent to Ernesto Monaci between 1879 and 1887 that we have found in Rome)
