Resumen
Mildred Lewis Rutherford, as one of the most prominent members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, has been scantly researched in the past, however her speeches and writing had a profound impact on southern historical consciousness during the New South Period. Her influence, interestingly, was not entirely based in reality. A poststructural analysis of her speeches reveals that she strategically fabricated and excluded information in order to create a specific memory of the past in the minds of southerners. Rutherford had difficulty discerning whether or not the economic benefits of industrialization outweighed the accompanying social consequences. Yet, she used the power of text in an attempt to recreate the Old South social structure based on a racial hierarchy that was bound to be defeated by the rising tide of indu-strialization.

Derrick, Stephanie Lee. "The reception of C.S. Lewis in Britain and America". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/19765.

Resumen
Since the publication of the book The Screwtape Letters in 1942, ‘C. S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. By paying close attention to the historical conditions of authorship, publication and reception, while highlighting similarities and contrasts between Britain and America, this dissertation provides a robust account of how and why Lewis became one of the most successful Christian authors of the twentieth century.

Resumen
The essay at hand is a New Historicist reading of C. S. Lewis’ dystopian fantasy novel That Hideous Strength. According to New Historicist theory it is informed by many disciplines, namely, philosophy, history, literary theory, theology, social science, and psychology, and it attempts to lessen injustices of race and class. The essay examines how satire operates in the novel, focusing on its societal targets: totalitarianism, laboratory animals, and education. Lewis’ philosophical idea expressed in his “The Abolition of Man” – that a society that averts from what he calls universal, timeless, objective values will eventually lead to a loss of that which is truly humane – is a main theme of the novel as well as for this essay. Another, complementary, main theme is that a cultivation of the heart is necessary for individuals of society since childhood if society is going to stay humane.

Resumen
This study examines differences and similarities in how two animal ethicists living in different times have argued for a liberation of the animals, the basis for the study is Lewis Gompertz Moral Inquiries: On the Situation of Man and of Brutes (1824) and Peter Singers Animal Liberation (1975). The analysis has been conducted with a historical perspective where close reading and contextualization have been used to further understand both the sources and the authors. The investigation is limited to four themes: animal's ability to experience, to kill animals, using animals and products of animals, and finally the idea of equality. The study concludes that there are significant similarities between the arguments Gompertz and Singer use, and that their ideas are rooted in a view of equality where the ability to suffer and have needs should be fundamental for our moral caring towards other creatures. A significant difference between the authors is their relationship to reason, where Gompertz highlights the animals' ability to reason as a cause to treat them well while Singer dismisses the idea that such abilities are of any interest for our moral considerations. The study also points out that the differences in the authors' conclusions and arguments can be understood on the basis of the scientific and intellectual context they operate in, where Gompertz can be described as an enlightenment philosopher with a strong belief in the developable reason within creatures, while the modern-day philosopher Singer rather sees reason as excluding, not only of animals but also of human beings. For animals to be liberated from man's oppression, both writers argue that it is necessary for man to eat a vegetarian diet.

Resumen
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Two literary conversion narratives with much historical detail, are compared in this thesis: the Confessiones written by the renowned fourth century church-father, St. Augustine, and Surprised by Joy written by the twentieth century writer and scholar, C.S. Lewis. In order to understand St. Augustine's conversion to the Christian faith, Christian religion as a social phenomenon in the Ancient World is discussed. As background for the discussion and comparison of the two conversion narratives, a brief biography is given of St. Augustine and of Lewis, as well as a description of each one's course of conversion. The research is structured In terms of beacons that St. Augustine identified during the course of his conversion: people who played a significant role, events that influenced his life, and inner conflict that spurred him on his way. By means of an analysis regarding theme and content, it is shown that there are clear similarities between the beacons identified by Augustine and Lewis in their conversion narratives.

C. S. Lewis is best known as the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, but Lewis’s poetry tends to be treated separately from his other works, or as an antecedent to his more famous prose works. This thesis shows that Lewis’s paradoxical views of literary history, cultural death, reason and imagination are reflected in his narrative poems. George Watson says that Lewis was “a paradoxical thing, a conservative iconoclast, and he came to the task well-armed” (1). He is both a traditionalist and a rebel against his times. I explain Lewis’s paradoxes in terms of the concepts of history, memory, reason and imagination, and show that Lewis’s position was a negotiation of his own historical and cultural context. Lewis’s poems and scholarly work indicate that his approach to historical terms is first to underline divergence, and then to emphasize a use of seemingly polarized terms in order to unify them.

Resumen
In mid twentieth century Britain, after the experience of total war, evil was not an abstract concept but a palpable reality. How was evil understood, and how did this understanding influence notions of English national identity? This thesis examines the lives and works of C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and J.R.R. Tolkien, members of the British literary club Inklings. It probes representations of evil, Englishness, gender and the erotic in their fiction and shows specifically how their science fiction, horror, and fantasy was a response to the moral and human devastation of two world wars. The thesis suggests that the Inkling’s middle brow literature opens a window on a wider sense of uncertainty and longing about Englishness in the eve of decolonization and decline.

Resumen
This dissertation examines the moralization and beautification campaigns of Mexico City's mayor Ernesto P. Uruchurtu. As head of the Department of the Federal District from 1952-1966, his policies encouraged more popular housing, improved infrastructure, better transportation, cleaner markets, and safer streets. Uruchurtu also aimed to crack down on vice and beautify the city. He believed that through beautification and moralization the city would become safer, healthier, and more livable for all residents. Significantly, he promoted the expansion and improvement of parks, gardens, recreational facilities, the repairing and building of fountains, and the planting of trees and flowers, especially gladiolas. Living with more green and athletic spaces, urban dwellers would have the opportunity to improve physically and spiritually, and would feel inspired to lead more moral lives. Residents could then collectively come together to take pride in their city and generate a stronger sense of civic culture. Consequently, a new generation of youth would grow up in a healthier urban environment and promote national prosperity. This dissertation explores these policies and analyzes the debates surrounding Oscar Lewis's anthropological work, The Children of Sanchez, to highlight anxieties about the effects of urbanization, modernization, and industrialization on the capital's inhabitants. Following the book's publication in 1964, hundreds of articles appeared in newspapers and magazines responding to its subject matter; the intimate details about life for one "typical" poor family living in a slum tenement in the city's center. The debates underscored the uneven benefits of Uruchurtu's policies and offered insights into contradictory depictions of Mexico City: the prospering center of industrialization and growth, and the hub of poverty and despair. Responses to the book expressed how many of the poor experienced economic and political changes during the 1950s and 1960s. The debates also offered details about the cultural and social implications of Uruchurtu's administrative policies and provided a unique opportunity for an open public exchange about life in the capital.

Resumen
This dissertation is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of the composition Ghosts Before Breakfast for chamber ensemble and fixed electronics. In this work I was interested in the creation of unity in the horizontal, vertical, and structural dimensions of a composition between the ensemble and the electronics and using electronic music techniques to gradually unify the ensemble and tape parts. Part 2 consists of an investigation into the development of the Electronic Music Studios of the University of Iowa when James Cessna from the Department of Physics and Astronomy came up with a Master’s Thesis project to design an Arbitrary Waveform Generator. An initial discussion with James Van Allen, James Cessna, Himie Voxman, and Philip Bezanson in 1964 led to the initiation of the program with the loan of equipment from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Collins Radio Company, and homemade devices. The outcome of this interdisciplinary project between the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Music led to a transformation of the Composition Program, and the studios evolved into a nationally recognized center for the study of electronic music. Its legacy lives on through its students who have reaped the benefits of the program and made successful careers throughout the country from the development of studios at other colleges and universities to work for film industries in Hollywood and New York. A history of the Electronic Music Studios shall be discussed, through the professors who have directed this program, its facilities, its assistants who maintained the facilities, its students, its guests, and its performances.

Cannon, Kelly June. "Fort Clatsop National Memorial: A Study in Historic Preservation". PDXScholar, 1994. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4719.

Texto completo
Resumen
Fort Clatsop National Memorial is a unit of the National Park Service in Clatsop County, Oregon. The memorial was established by an Act of Congress in 1958 to commemorate the culmination and 1805-1806 winter encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The memorial centers around a replicated fort structure. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the process of preserving historic sites under the National Park Service (NPS) by examining the history of Fort Clatsop National Memorial. Through this examination it is possible to understand the realities of the national preservation system and the ideals fostered by those involved in the system. The Fort Clatsop site became the subject of folk history in Clatsop County, which culminated in a community movement for national recognition. During the community sponsored l 50th anniversary celebration of the Expedition, local civic groups built the existing fort replica. The management needs of the replica caused the site owner, the Oregon Historical Society (OHS), to actively pursue national recognition. To achieve the creation of a national memorial, OHS and community members enlisted the help of Senator Richard L. Neuberger. Senator Neuberger drafted and successfully sponsored legislation for the creation of the memorial. Since the memorial's creation in '1958, the site has been under the management of the National Park Service (NPS). As a historical, commemorative unit, the NPS is responsible under the 193 5 Historic Sites Act for presenting the history of the Expedition to the public. Such historic interpretation includes the use of costumed demonstrations, exhibits, and other interpretive media. Fort Clatsop also represents the ideals of education and inspiration in NPS interpretive policies. In conclusion, the examination of Fort Clatsop illustrates factors involved in the creation of historic sites within the NPS and how private individuals and Congress affect the selection of historic sites for preservation. While illustrating how the private sector and Congress can decide what historic sites are preserved under the park system, this examination also illustrates how the park system handles those sites placed under its management and how NPS management helps shape public memory.

Glennon, Jenny L. "American ways and their meaning : Edith Wharton's post-war fiction and American history, ideology, and national identity". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:59954615-29ff-4da4-8632-b9887c24c218.

Resumen
This thesis argues that Edith Wharton’s assessment of American ways and their meaning in her post-war fiction has been widely misread. Its title derives from French Ways and Their Meaning (1919), which she wrote to educate her countrymen about French culture and society. Making sense of America was as great a challenge to Wharton. Much of her later fiction was for a long time dismissed by critics on the grounds that she had failed to ‘make sense’ of America. Wharton was troubled by American materialism and optimism, yet she believed in a culturally significant future for her nation. She advocated – and wrote – an American fiction that looked critically at society and acknowledged the nation’s ties to Europe. Sometimes her assessment of American ways is reductive, and presented in a tone that her critics, then and since, found off- putting and snobbish. But her skepticism about American modernity was penetrating and prophetic, and has not been given its due. In criticism over the last two decades, a case for the place of Wharton’s post-war fiction in canons of feminism and modernism has been persuasively made. The thesis responds to these positions, but makes its own argument that the post-war writing reflects broader shift in American identity and ideology. The thesis is broadly historicist in its strategy, opening with a discussionofthereputationofthesetextsandthatoftheauthormoregenerally. Afterthat entry-point, it is organized thematically, with four chapters covering topics that are seen as key components of American ideology in Wharton’s post-war writing. These include modernity, gender equality, the American Dream of social mobility, and American exceptionalism. The thesis concludes with an assessment of Wharton’s prognostications in the context of twenty-first century America.

Dowse, Richard J. "The Laie Hawaii Temple: A History from Its Conception to Completion". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3352.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Laie Hawaii Temple majestically overlooks the beaches of Oahu and has stood as an emblem of the Latter-day Saint faith to the world since 1919. Although the structure is iconic and highly significant to Latter-day Saints, a comprehensive history of the Laie Hawaii Temple has never been published. This thesis provides such a history from the conception of the temple until its dedication. The history of this particular temple is important for several reasons. At its dedication, the temple in Laie became the fifth operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the first dedicated temple outside of the state of Utah (following the exodus) and outside of North America. It was also the first temple built in one of the missions of the Church. It was a pioneering temple as one of the first that catered to a large number of patrons from different cultures speaking different languages. Its multi-cultural, multi-lingual integration is something that would not be seen in other temples for several decades. Over the years, the temple and the attractions built around it have drawn millions of other visitors as well. Its location has made it an internationally recognized edifice and a valuable tool for the Church to introduce its message to the world. This history is also compelling because of what the temple in Laie, Hawaii represents in terms of the Latter-day Saint conception of the doctrine of the "gathering." As the first temple built outside of the traditional centers of Mormon colonization, this temple became an early prototype of a method of gathering that does not appear to begin taking hold Church-wide until the mid-twentieth century. Ahead of its time in other ways, the temple was built in a place where, according to the thinking of the time, Church membership was not yet sizable enough to warrant a temple. This thesis explains why the temple was built in Hawaii. These aspects of the temple's history produced ramifications that continue to impact the Church today, nearly 100 years later. As with many temples, a folk history of oral tradition has developed around the story of the Laie Hawaii Temple. This thesis will also provide a review of the historical record and offer clarity in sorting through that tradition.

Social photography was born in the United States at the end of the 19th century at a time when children were beginning to occupy a new place in the family. There is a stark contrast between the rich children, who tend to be sanctified and whose innocence is praised through art, and the poor children, who are often exploited and depicted in a picturesque way. While putting poor children at the heart of their concerns, the reformers used photography as a means to promote social progress, in such a way that text and image prove to be indissociable. Such is the case with Jacob A. Riis, a journalist and photographer who worked in New York at the end of the 19th century, and Lewis W. Hine, through his commitment to the struggle against child labor with the National Child Labor Committee (at a time marked by high immigration, rapid industrialization, and chaotic urbanization), as well as the photographers who worked for the Farm Security Administration at the end of the 1930s within the New Deal. Children are at the heart of a rhetorical system that exploits the vivid and truthful dimensions of photography and its power to move us. They contribute to the emergence of a new genre of photography, social documentary photography, which evolved according to the various ways in which it was disseminated (the press, conferences, exhibitions, and museums). While the cause of children is most often defended and while they maintain their status as subjects in these photographs, the ways in which they are depicted through different means of communication and dissemination sometimes turn them into mere objects

Resumen
This thesis examines the experiences of fairgoers at the Lewis and Clark Centennial, American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair held in Portland, Oregon from June to October of 1905. Historians have framed world's fairs and international expositions as sites of legitimating narratives and restagings of empire and nationhood. This thesis focuses on women, Asian Americans, and Native Americans who interrupted and disrupted the performance and exhibition of U.S. imperialism in the specific case of Portland, Oregon. It considers who benefitted from or endured loss in the demonstrations of imperial culture at the Fair. Following the premises that metropolitan and colonial histories should be considered in the same analytical field and that the systemic power of domestic imperialism in the United States extended beyond Native Americans into the experiences of most nonwhite American communities, this thesis adds a metropolitan approach to Native-American history and, in turn, applies a more colonial approach to the study of African-American, Asian-American, and working-class women's histories. In three chapters, this study explores a range of disruptions at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial - patched over by the Exposition's civic elites and overlooked by previous historians of the Fair - that shed light on the politics of race, class, and gender within the processes of empire and nation building in the turn-of-the-century West.

The subject of the present dissertation is the analysis or Sinclair Lewis' five major novels of the twenties: Mainstreet (1920), Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), and Dodsworth (1929). The opening pages are devoted to a succinct presentation of the U. S. A. In this decade, in order to provide a general idea of the period and to place Lewis within a special literary tradition. Then we move to the core of the study which aims at analyzing and commenting on the characters and aspects of American life that Lewis chooses as his favorite largest. We also remark UN his levels of satire, by classifying the culprits according to their levels of villainy. A further part is allotted to treating Lewis' satiric devices and to attempting to determine his "originality" in this type of fiction. Alongside this, we try to appraise his artistry in comparison to renowned satirists

Sys, Jacques.

The aim of this work is to study the various aspects of c. S. Lewis's theology of history. In all his works, from his fiction down to his religious writings, lewis tries to find back the meaning of time and history, a meaning which can be revealed only if one puts christ at the very centre of reality. When all philosophies of history have failed, and when moral relativism seems to be reigning supreme, it is of paramount importance to open the eyes of the unbeliever onto the work of the holy spirit in this world and to show him how this work stems from the complex form of relationship between nature and supernature. In this respect, the originality of c. S. Lewis's work is that it addresses both reason and imagination : conversion to supernaturalism and to christ is not only the product of an intellectual assent, but also of an awakening of imagination to supernatural reality. The works of c. S. Lewis have thus a twofold aspect, both critical and eschatological; a critical aspect in that it represents an analysis of secular culture, and eschatological in that on this critical foundation lewis builds up a dialectical conception of desire through which are perceived both the end of history and the beginning of the new creation

Resumen
The Nashville Civil Rights Movement was one of the most dynamic local movements of the early 1960s, producing the most capable student leaders of the period 1960 to 1965. Despite such a feat, the historical record has largely overlooked this phenomenon. What circumstances allowed Nashville to produce such a dynamic movement whose youth leadership of John Lewis, Diane Nash, Bernard LaFayette, and James Bevel had no parallel? How was this small cadre able to influence movement developments on local and a national level? In order to address these critical research questions, standard historical methods of inquiry will be employed. These include the use of secondary sources, primarily Civil Rights Movement histories and memoirs, scholarly articles, and dissertations and theses. The primary sources used include public lectures, articles from various periodicals, extant interviews, numerous manuscript collections, and a variety of audio and video recordings. No original interviews were conducted because of the availability of extensive high quality interviews. This dissertation will demonstrate that the Nashville Movement evolved out of the formation of independent Black churches and college that over time became the primary sites of resistance to racial discrimination, starting in the Nineteenth Century. By the late 1950s, Nashville’s Black college attracted the students who became the driving force of a local movement that quickly established itself at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Nashville’s forefront status was due to an intentional leadership training program based upon nonviolence. As a result of the training, leaders had a profound impact upon nearly every major movement development up to 1965, including the sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the birth of SNCC, the emergence of Black Power, the direction of the SCLC after 1962, the thinking of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Birmingham campaign, and the Selma voting rights campaign. In addition, the Nashville activists helped eliminate fear as an obstacle to Black freedom. These activists also revealed new relationship dynamics between students and adults and merged nonviolent direct action with voter registration, a combination considered incompatible.

Resumen
This Thesis is a proposal for a prototypical hillside housing community in Los Angeles, California. As a prototype it is responsible for setting an architectural precedent. In this effort, the Thesis continues with focus on issues of construction methodology, urban planning, and land use relationships concerning the present city. Being clear and uncomplicated is the driving force of this architectural process. On the horizon is the 21st Century. Architecture has become increasingly convoluted rather than enlightened. Here, I have focused my attentions on developing a technologically based, material-driven, compassionate solution to answer the issue of housing on the hillsides of Los Angeles. I have realized a clear system of building using uncomplicated technology and material. However, as demonstrated, this system of building provides only an envelope for space definition. It becomes the architectural precedent, a canvas, through which the inhabitant can define his existence. Enlightened limitations.

Abstract: The proposol of this thesis of doctorate is to promote an investigation on the foundation process of the platonic city in the Dialogue of Laws, seeking to verify how this text and this process are linked to the set of dialogues, allowing us to comprehend that the philosopher author establishes a theoretical, methodological and conceptual path directly related to the context of the historical transformations of the Greek cities and their political regimes. Therefore, in this historical route of the dialogical texts, we verify an elaboration, even though incipient, of a theory of history in Plato

Introduction. The spondyloarthritis encomprises a group of diseases strongly associated with HLA-B*27 gene. It has been proposed that genes not belonging to the major histocompatibility complex human influence the genesis of these diseases especially in patients HLA-B*27 negative. Objectives. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the antigens of the ABO, Secretor and Lewis histo-blood systems are associated with spondyloarthritis, especially ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Material and methods. Three hundred and ninety-four patients with clinical suspicion of spondyloarthritis sent for identification of HLA-B*27 gene were analyzed. One hundred and nineteen (30.2%) had confirmed the diagnosis of spondyloarthritis according to the ASAS criteria. The remaining 275 (69.8%) were used as controls. The identification of HLA-B*27 gene was performed using the PCR-SSOP method. The identification of the antigens of the ABO, Secretor and Lewis histo-blood systems was performed using hemagglutination and PCR-RFLP methods. The exact Fisher's test, the chi-square, and the values of Odds Ratio (OR) and Confidence Interval set at 95% were calculated using the GraphPad INSTAT software, accepting the error of 5%. Results. No statistically significant differences were observed in the frequency of antigenic profiles of ABO (χ2: 1.152; p = 0.764; GL: 3), Secreto (χ2: 0.779; p = 0.377; GL: 1) and Lewis (χ2: 1.853; p = 0.396; GL: 2) histo-blood groups between patients and controls. The Lea antigen was more frequent in patients with AS compared to controls (OR: 1.833; 95% CI: 1025- 3284, p = 0.053). This antigen was strongly associated with AS in HLA-B*27 negative patients compared to controls (OR: 4.469; 95% CI: 1931-10342; p = 0.0007). This association remained only in males in the absence of HLA-B*27 gene (OR: 6.880; 95% CI: 1852-25564; p = 0.004). Conclusions. AS is associated to the Lea antigen in HLAB* 27 negative male patients.

Introduction: Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to humans commonly in the feces of a hemipterous popularly known as barber. The natural infection occurs mainly in childhood. After a period of approximately two decades infected individuals develop clinical manifestations such as Chagas heart disease and Chagas gastrointestinal disease (Megaesophagus and/or Megacolon). The expression of the antigens belonging to histo-blood systems ABO, Secretor and Lewis, controlled by the genes ABO (9q34.1), FUT2 (19q13.3) and FUT3 (19p13.3) differs between the organs affected by Chagas disease. It is possible that the differential tissue expression of ABO, Secretor and Lewis histo-blood groups influences the clinical manifestations of Chagas disease. Aim: The aim if this study was to verify if the antigens of the histo-blood systems ABO, Secretor and Lewis are associated with different clinical forms of Chagas disease. Materials and methods: After obtaining the informed consent peripheral blood and serum samples from 827 individuals were collected. Patients were divided into three subgroups according to their clinical state (megacólon [n=66], megaesophagus [n=119] and cardiomyopathy [n=154]). The control group consisted of 488 blood donors properly fit for the donation. The Lewis and ABO phenotyping were performed by hemagglutination test tube and gel columns agglutination, respectively. The IgG anti-T. cruzi antibodies were identified by ELISA. FUT2 and FUT3 genotyping were carried out by PCR-RFLP. Results: The mean age of patients with Chagas disease was 64.8±11.2 and blood donors 34.3±11.0 (p<0.0001). The differences between the percentages of the sex of the patients and donors were statistically significant (p <0.0001). The frequencies of ABO, Secretor and Lewis distributed in the three forms of the disease compared with each other and with donors, did not give differences statistically significant. The comparison between the ABO and Secretor combined, according to the three forms of Chagas disease, showed statistically significant differences for megaesophagus form (p=0.015). The frequencies of ABO, Secretor and Lewis antigen profiles between patients and donors showed differences statistically significant in favor of BLeb antigen (p=0.032). Conclusion: The results suggest that the high expression of antigen B, which characterizes the B and AB blood groups under the control of functional FUT2 (Secretor) gene acts as a risk factor for megaesophagus form of the Chagas disease.

This study analyzed the history of teachers in the process of formation of the subject of History in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. To that end, we investigated the activities of teachers which culminated in the constitution of the knowings and doings of the teaching of History in secondary school a century before the creation of courses that would prepare teachers for that level of teaching. In that sense, we delimitated two moments: the first one, in the second half of the nineteenth century, refers to the officialization of the post of History teacher by means of offerings of public teaching jobs aimed at the teaching of a specific subject. In doing so, we went back to the second half of the eighteenth century, at the time of the institution of the so-called instruções pombalinas , i.e., set of norms, promulgated by the Portuguese statesman Marquis of Pombal, for the teaching of Latin grammar, a subject that conveyed historical contents. The second one, ranging from the end of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century, features the discussions and establishments related to the normatization of the teaching of History set forth by the public power of the Gymnasio Espírito-Santense, a renowned boys school of the time. Our analysis was grounded on a corpus constituted by official documents, newspapers of the time and History textbooks that comprised the foundations for the understanding of the actions of teachers in the process of formation of History as a subject. We based our work on Roger Chartier (1990, 2009) and André Chervel (1990; 2001) in order to build the categories Humanist Fraternities (Fraternidades Humanistas), Productive Liberties (Liberdades Produtivas) and Distinctive Equalities (Igualdades Distintivas), articulating them to those of Fights, Laws and Books. As a result, we concluded that the formation of the subject of History in the state of Espírito Santo was made from the actions of teachers located in different fraternities. Some of these, in a way, professed History under strong teleological conceptions which transposed a Sacred History to a Profane History; on the other hand, other fraternities, fighting against this transposition, professed a teaching of History that potentialized the action of individuals and conflicts that crossed the period examined. We postulated that this shock was the indelible mark of the fights, laws and books upon which History teachers built the subject of History in secondary education in Espírito Santo

This thesis examines the effect regionalism had upon North Carolina and Virginia during the 1847-1862 legislative battles over the Danville, Virginia, to Greensboro, North Carolina, railroad connection. The first chapter examines the rivalry between eastern and western North Carolina for internal improvement legislation, namely westerners’ wish to connect with Virginia and easterners’ desire to remain economically relevant. The second chapter investigates the Tidewater region of Virginia and its battle against the Southside to create a rail connection with North Carolina. The third chapter examines the legislation for the Danville Connection during the American Civil War in the Virginia, North Carolina, and Confederate legislatures. Through an examination of voting patterns and public opinion, this thesis finds that, despite Confederate President Jefferson Davis’s designation of the Danville connection as a military necessity, regionalism overcame Confederate nationalism during this instance.

Resumen
Although a casual reading of the Supreme Court of Canada's decisions in R. v. Nikal and R. v. Lewis might suggest otherwise, this thesis will argue that Court's decisions in two recent British Columbia aboriginal fishing cases do not apply in Ontario. In doing so, it will be shown that the Supreme Court of Canada relied on evidence of historic Crown policies towards aboriginal fishing rights in Upper Canada in the absence of appropriate context as to how those policies evolved. As a result, the Court wrongly concluded that fisheries could not be the subject of exclusive aboriginal rights. As a result of its reliance on historically discriminatory policies of the Crown, it will be shown that the Court favoured the fishing privileges of non-aboriginal Canadians over the pre-existing rights and title of aboriginal peoples. In exploring these issues, this thesis will include a review of case-law, legislation and historical materials from the 17$\sp{\rm th}$, 18$\sp{\rm th}$ and 19$\sp{\rm th}$ centuries as well as contemporary case-law and legislation.

The Grão-Pará, during the first half of the 19th century, had a period of intensive social disturbances and political crisis. During twenty years the province was emerged in two revolutionary processes which implied on significant changes, principally on political and representative structures, namely, the Independence and Cabanagem movement. Both processes can be represented as a variety of political ideas and specific social projects, creating a plural profile of multiple meanings and the idea of a heterogeneous movement. These particularities in the Grão-Pará's political scenario of the Independence and Cabanagem movement allow us to understand these processes through its multiplicity of projects and political acts on the médio Amazonas. From these projects we can see the importance of fight for the political-administrative separation of the Alto-Amazonas from the province of Grão-Pará to create the province of Rio Negro. This project was based on the local elite ideas and on the population interests. To the local elite the question of to separate or not from the Grão-Pará was as important as to separate or not from Portugal was to the elite of Belém. However, if the elites would fight to increase its domain, the population, specially the tapuias, often would also fight for more space, power and rights. Given this context, we propose on this study to understand how these ideas were developed during the revolutionary process of the first half of the 19th century, analyzing the presented projects in the political scenarion of the Grão-Pará considering on the background the Independence and Cabanagem movement.

In the present thesis I deal with the development of a modern constitutional order in Brazil. An order that was cradled by the crises and desegregation of the American Portuguese Empire and also responsible for the movement of Independence and the formation of a new political entity. I focus on the struggle for the enforcement of an arrangement, both institutional and political, that enabled the development of a tie between the totality and its parts, with an emphasis on the definition of a provincial sphere of power; a totality that, until 1822, recognized itself as Portuguese. During the First Reign (1822- 1831) and the beginning of the Regency period (1831-1834), in an environment scared by violent conflicts between those who fought for different political projects, a pact mirrored on the idea of a Constitution had a primary role. To such a degree, that our first legislators considered fundamental to put in motion judicial reforms that enabled the governmental apparatuses to work. I analyze the constitutional experience, in those first years after the Brazilian independence, together with its influence on the administration of the country. It is mandatory to do so because the making of laws was closely connected to their observance. And both, as parts of what is called Public Law, were the pillars of the new Empire. By taking that into account, I uphold that the Constitution of 1824, differently of what is usually imagined, was extremely effective on grounding the new State\'s structure, as it can be seen by the debates concerning its reform. The legislative scenario revealed itself central to the understanding of the problem. That scenario evolved under a new ideal of political representation, grounded on the revolutionary concept that \"laws\" were the bearer of the \"Law\"; and to such an extent that it had the legitimacy needed for legislators to speak for the \"nation\"

This dissertation analyzes the narratives of subjects who printed a different meaning to the juridical contract that established the legal conditions for possession and housing. The meanings and experiences of social life were analyzed from the cultural studies perspective, historiographic current heterogeneous in their approaches, but it focused on the subject the senses of their actions rather than it structures. It has its initial goal in 1967 when was created the São Pedro settlement and the first occupations, and outcome in 2002, when, by the first time, the association of people organized a seminar to discuss the end of Renting. Within the framework of urban illegality, these individuals built their homes, provided the area of social significance and gave the steps to urbanize the district. This study also discusses the power and limits of the law against the political action of private agents and public power which is the official laws formulator and arbiter of the land conflicts. Through oral history, it articulates impressions, interpretations and meanings of Renting on the experience of housing and the constitution of the São Pedro district. It also examines the importance of oral history as an instrument of change, since the oral parts were essential to the decrees publication that banned the collection of the forum

Adaptation has been a part of cinema since its very beginning. Since then, the number of film versions of literary works which appear on screen has never ceases to increase and adaptation is still at the heart of cinematic production around the world. Adaptation actually exists in a rather paradoxical situation. What motivates its conception is also the source of the majority of criticism against it. On one hand, the economic advantage is clear. The fame of a popular novel guarantees a large audience. On the other hand, its creative context can prove to be difficult since ontologically adaptation serves to preserve the traditional comparison based on an oppositional paradigm of the arts where the film has to justify itself in front of the source text. Standing at a crossroads between the arts, adaptation is the focus of a debate on a notional hierarchy within the arts where narration through images could still be perceived as inferior compared to other forms. We wanted to study this phenomenon within the context of the resurgence of fantasy witnessed in the 2000’s in this thesis. In the English-speaking world this cultural event reached an unexpected level with the success of the adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling’s novels while the film versions of C. S. Lewis’ works were less well received. With these points in mind, we consider the process and the product of adaptation in order to situate our corpus in the debate through a top down approach of comparison. We thus hope to bring some elements of reflections on the craze for these stories and the domain of adaptation studies

Henry, Stephen Michael. "Further insight into the Lewis histo-blood-group system as revealed from study of Polynesian and Caucasian plasma and erythrocyte glycosphingolipids". Thesis, University of Auckland, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/1975.

Resumen
This project involved the study of Lewis and related blood group glycosphingolipid isolated from individuals with normal and aberrant Lewis/secretor phenotypes. The objective was to find a biochemical basis for the unusual expression of Lewis and secretor phenotypes in Polynesians and to use this information to shed light on the "normal" expression of Lewis antigens. By using purified glycolipids, presenting them in the cell free environment of thin layer chromatography to Lewis antibodies and by determining structures by mass spectrometry it has been shown that: l. The Lec epitope is a terminal Galβ1-3Gal sequence, and not an internal branch as proposed by Hanfland (Hanfland et a1.,1986). 2. Lec or H-5-1 are present in Lewis negative phenotypes and their consequent consumption by the Le and ,Se transferases resulting in the known Lea and Leb antigens can be seen in the Lewis positives. 3. Phenotypically Le(a-b-) individuals have small amounts of Lewis antigens. This clearly demonstrates that although the Lewis negative phenotype exists at the crude serological level, this phenotype is not an "all-or-nothing" phenomenon at the chemical level. This also allows it to be postulated that the le gene is probably partially active. 4. Le(a+b+) individuals have both Lea and Leb glycolipids in the erythrocyte membrane and in plasma. Observed phenotyping anomalies appear to be related to there being quantitatively less Leb-6 in the Polynesian Le(a+b+) erythrocyte membrane than in the Le(a-b+) membrane. 5. The Le(a+b-) phenotype of Polynesians is actually the Le(a+b+) phenotype but with serologically undetectable Leb. This allows it to be postulated that the nonsecretor gene (se) is absent in Polynesians. 6. Extended structures are present in most of the Polynesian samples which is in support of a postulated weak secretor gene (Sew). It now appears that the difference between the extended Lewis glycolipids of Caucasians and Polynesians is quantitative. The postulated, Sew transferase appears to be inefficient and allows for increased formation of elongated glycoconjugates (polyglycosylceramides) to result. 7. Reduced fucosyltransferase activity allows increased elongation of the precursor chain to occur, which allows it to be postulated that fucosylation of the precursor prevents, or at least markedly reduces, chain elongation. It is speculated that, as almost everyone is either Lewis and/or secretor positive, perhaps the prevention of chain elongation is a biological reason as to why the Lewis and Secretor polymorphisms exist. 8. Differences in ceramide patterns of Lewis active glycolipids suggests that the small intestinal tract is not the only origin of plasma glycolipids, or there is differential absorption. 9. There is no plasma glycolipid-based reason for there being increased H type 2 antigen reactivity in the Polynesian erythrocyte membrane, nor a reason for the H antigen association with the Le(a+b+) phenotype.

This study, entitled “Silence and Dissidence in the Lewis & Clark Expedition Journals,” focuses on the voyage of discovery under the command of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and draws upon a body of recently published texts. Reassessing the official voice of the Jeffersonian discourse, embodied by the captains in charge of a mission with geopolitical, economic and scientific purposes, our research aims at shedding new light on the writings of the Corps of Discovery, in an attempt to rehabilitate the somewhat neglected voices of the sergeants and soldiers of the group, often deemed secondary but actually indicative of alternate vantage points, allowing for new historiographical perspectives. This new reading of a critical episode in the history of the North American continent, as well as its people, will endeavour to show that, beyond the leaders’ reports, it is only through the symphony of intertwining “official” and “dissenting” voices that true relevance and accuracy may be achieved in the final synthetic narrative. More than two centuries after the transcontinental journey of the party led by Lewis and Clark, this study will aim at systematically interconnecting the whole set of manuscripts devoted to the narration of the voyage, for a better and renovated approach of these precious primary sources. This analysis is linked to the broader framework of the Jeffersonian policy, the main aspects of which shall first be presented, in order to fully grasp the exceptional nature of a profoundly “American” epic, through the prism of the various testimonies

Hunt, Sally Ann. "The discoursal construction of female physical identity in selected works in children's literature". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005965.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis reports on an analysis of the discursive construction of female and male physical identity in children’s literature and explicitly combines corpus linguistic methods with a critical discourse approach. Based on three novels from each of the Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter series, it shows clear gendering of body parts, not only in terms of the purely quantitative preferences for certain body parts to be associated with one or other gender, but in terms of discourse prosody, or the uses to which the body parts are put. Human body parts in these series are mostly used in the following four ways, all of which show differences in realisation in terms of gender: · to describe individuals, physically, in order to distinguish one from the other; · to convey emotion, unintentionally as well as consciously; · for physical interaction between people and · for interaction with the world more broadly: responses to danger and agency, i.e. the ability to act on the world and the nature of what is achieved. The use of body parts by characters to express emotion and act agentively on the world is revealed to be strongly gendered in the two series. I characterise the most prominent patterns in terms of the bodily products blood, sweat and tears, of which the last is strongly connected to female characters, who are generally associated with emotion. The other two, referring to active participation in fighting and injury, as well as agency, are almost exclusively reserved for males, with female characters rendered unable to act on the physical world as a result of overwhelming feelings. The females’ response to danger suggests stereotyped discourses of inequality which see women and girls as requiring protection and being physically incapable. Thus gender is still a particularly salient aspect in these widely-read examples of children’s literature, despite plots which appear to be fairly positive towards women. The strength of the inclusion of a corpus approach in this study lies in its capacity to reveal objective, and often fairly covert, trends in language use. These in turn enrich the critical analysis of discourses in these influential texts, which facilitates social change through linguistic analysis.
